  • In this part 2 video I make my DIY charcaol and put it to the test against purchased activated charcoal. I alsow test it against normal charcoal to see wich one is best for your fish.

I am curious about the possibility of using caustic soda to recycle or refresh activated carbon from the store

@@erichpizer1 never heard of that, need to do some research about that. Not sure if it is worth the fuzz thow. It's not like activated Carbon is hard to come by

All the videos I've seen doing this add the acid _after_ carbonization. In a research paper I read on chemically activated charcoal, the process added the acid to the carbon containing material _before_ pyrolization. The acid seemingly keeps the wood or whatever clean from tar buildup while it's being converted into activated charcoal. You should try again: They mulch up the raw material, mix it with acid and then fire it at between 250-600 C. The more acid is added, the more porous it will be.

    Great little experiment. Thank you!

Great job with the experiment man! I didn't realize that the activated charcoal would affect the parameters and also, the difference in the water color was really noticeable. Nice job 👍

I'm not scientist, but I'm wanting to make activated charcoal for homemade original light bulbs like in the Edison days. I do know from classes from school that it has to goal through pyrolysis which it never did. Meaning their should be no oxygen present when burning. In the old days before you could depressurize burners you would go way the hell up to the top of a mountain some where. Anyways there was never a pyrolization stage you just heated charcoal again with vinegar on it?
Thanks again though for the test it still seems to filter, have you checked it with the strips to compare how clean it is vs bought?

its cheaper and less shit to buy bulk A-carbon that has been properly processed. interesting vid though

Do I need to wash the purchased activated charcoal before using it as my filter? Or is there other steps to follow before using it as a filter? Definitely need some advice.

Yes you are better off rincing it befor adding it to the tank / aquarium. Every time you add something you are better to rince it off to get dust and debree off it.

I saw a good video on how they make it but I can not recall the name off the channel. It was a seller that showed off the proces with charcoal and coconut charcoal aswell. It's been a solid year and a half I think since I saw that vid so don't recall all the names off products they used unfortunately

Great video... I always thought the acid method is not effecient enough to activate it... You even did the extra step of oven steaming it...
I think if after the 24h acid bath, you could freeze it with the acid and let it thaw, even a couple of times. The expanding icy water should increase porosity (theoretically). And also one could try microwaving it with the acid or in some sort of salt/electrolyte solution (I make a ton of calcium acetate from eggshells and vinegar for example). These would be interesting experiments if it improves the activation.

I don't know about the freezing method, never heard of it... but you need somthing acidic for sure to get the basicne ( other side of neutral) to get a more neutral product. Thanks for subscribing to my channel Johannes!
