Mousepad is genius, I'm gonna go get one asap. I drum on my leg sometimes... Rebound is ok haha but it starts to hurt pretty quickly. Probably for the best to get a pad! Thanks for the video.
Wow you've got a good eye! I had to go back and watch that clip 5 times before I suddenly saw it haha. I don't even recall noticing when I was filming. 😂
Thanks! Yeah recording brushes on cardboard is actually considered a respectable way to record a brush track (depending on the song). It beats playing on a worn out head that might be too smooth. I've seen somebody play on a manhasset music stand too! Those are rough-textured enough to work ok as well.
I use a small stack of newspaper, like a weekly one, or the Sunday edition. Why? For control. If I am tearing up the newspaper, it means playing "into" it, instead of "off it". If I am not tearing up the newspaper, it means the opposite. It's like playing on pillows (which I also do for the same), but you have a more visual impact on your technique. It works, and you can still recycle the newspaper after.
Phone books were the BEST! I loved to see the whole in the center for a crater . When it reached the center time for new ones. I have also mentioned truck tires nailed to wood and drumsticks forged from construction rebars. ALl around the cheaper and most outrageous ideas gained the most followers. Now a practice pad WITH a stand us $25.00 ! Where is the incentive.?
You can buy neoprene with an adhesive backing on Ebay. Peel and stick it to an old plastic dinner plate and trim it. Your snare stand will hold it perfectly. Cost: Less than $4 bucks.
I just googled practice pad and thought there's gotta be something cheaper than 40-50$ practice pads. To be honest I think these are belonging to the category in the instrument industry of overpriced items, but that has something to do with monopoly of the big brands I guess. Your idea with the mouse pad was perfect, exactly what I was searching for. And where I wonder how I didn't think of such a clever, simple idea ;)
Actually, Remo weather King 10-in practice pad is pretty incredible, it's got screws to tighten them up or loosen up, has incredible snare like feel to it, has a rim (plastic though) and a real weather King head on top, cost around 22 or $26. Got one in New York in 1989 for 15 bucks still have it and practice on it all the time. It's a bit more expensive now but nowhere near like other brands, and it's by Remo! You can get one on amazon.com or wherever :)
Hi.just wondering..I got a dw go anywhere practice kit yesterday and I find the bass drum pad very hard and just doesn't sound or feel good. Do you have any suggestions?
Me and our snare line played on the School floor during my sophomore year in high school and our principle said hey, could you please go to another shade.

Awesome vid. Love the brush on cardboard, I could see actually recording that sound. It has a nice dry feel that would work well with some songs.
