You live in an apartment or a dorm, and you’re constrained to quiet practice. You don’t have a drum set yet, and maybe you feel like you can’t afford it or would at least rather wait a while to make the investment. Even if you could buy it, though, you wouldn’t be able to play it because it’s too loud! But you really want to learn the drums and get really good at the instrument! You want to learn everything you can so that you can play your favorite songs and maybe even play with a band. But you struggle to really get there when all you have is a pair of sticks and a practice pad.
You fear losing that lifelong dream of becoming a drummer as time passes you by and you get older. You know that right now is your opportunity, and you have to get started drumset or no drumset.
Guess what? You can learn a lot of fundamentals and basic coordination - and even get a really solid start on the drumset just with your sticks & pad. Here’s how you do it. This is what I did when I was in middle school before I bought my first kit, and this is what I have beginner students do all the time:
    * Learning rebound early on is the best way to dodge hurdles that a lot of drummers deal with down the road (which I’ll tell you more about in a moment).
    * You can use basic sticking patterns to increase coordination and actually help with playing grooves on a kit.
    * Finally, you can tap your feet on the floor and play “grooves” to work coordination and prepare for getting on the kit. But I’ll specifically show you two exact ways to tap your feet so you can already begin working kick drum technique without even having a pedal nearby!
That’s pretty much it, and it’s simple! But now I want to physically show you how to work these things, so it’s time to get nitty gritty. There’s also one more final strategy I’ll show you that you can employ beyond these that will reap dividends with your long-term drumming growth. You can do this.
Practice all of that, knowing that YOU CAN DO IT. You CAN overcome this challenge and learn drums without a drumset. You don’t have to give up on the dream. Get started the right way, and get started no matter your budget or living situation right now.
Once you put in the work to learn these things, you’ll be able to jump onto a real kit when the time comes, and you’ll already be grooving. Mastering grip and rebound early on saves you so much frustration down the road, and you’re now well on your way to becoming the pro-sounding drummer you’ve always wanted to be.
I believe that ANYONE can learn the drums, and I believe you’re far more capable of becoming a great drummer than you think you are. Don’t sell yourself short! SUBSCRIBE for more Non Glamorous videos that get straight to the point of solving drumming frustration. Stay Non Glamorous, Everyone!

You are never too old to start to learn a musical instrument. I started to play drums at 32, I'm still playing and learning, I'm now 63. Still in a band, we play pubs and clubs regularly. If you want to learn something, go do it.

Great strategy, Stephen. Frustration is the killer of dreams. Practicing fundamental skills is the key to "Life-Long Thumpification". I used a pad for a year before my sticks ever hit a drum. If you can be awesome on a practice pad...your kit will love you.

My first drum set was a bed, two pillows, and a chair. I produced a four drum set which actually helped my build a lot of power and technique.

With no drumming experience and being a pianist, I had a practice pad and some sticks at home. I started learning with that just for fun and now I know all the fundimentals and can do advance level exercises. I usually place a few pads like a drumset around me and practice, very similar. Great tool to learn.

Hey! I really want to know from WHERE you started to learn drums.. like did you start from notes or coordinations or learning about drums and it’s parts because I have no idea where to start

    • @udaysingh8379
      @udaysingh8379 7 місяців тому +3

@@divyababer8157 the best thing to do is to get some drum sticks and s multi surface practice pad. The 2 main things you need to learn is how to hold the stick and play different types of beats like singles doubles etc. Then learn fundimental exercises such as paradiddles double paradiddles six beat roll etc. Once you can do these start playing along with simple drum songs you can easily understand how combination of these beats are made and will quickly be able to adapt. Hope that helps.

This is so awesome, thank you so much for this upload. I picked up a cheap electronic drum kit during covid but had to pass it on as did not have the room to leave a kit set up and was not practical to keep assembling and taking it down to practice. Got a bass just to have something to play rhythms on, which is fine but there was just something about the drums that i enjoyed so much more. With Christmas around the corner, going to get myself a practice pad and start putting this to the test. There is a recording studio and rehersal rooms 5 minutes away, so once i get the hang of the basics can pop down there and play on a kit once a week to put the practice to the test, and just to have some fun.

So great! This obviates how my basic skills with drums have always allowed me to step into a kit and at least do something basic. As a teen playing bass in the late 80's and early 90's I studied Iron Maiden and Rush from the bass side in great detail. Once I got into Rush I started also learning Neil Peart's parts by just tapping with my hands. I only really started stick control in the last 3 years when I finally got my own kit, then it went back to storage after the fiasco of the lock down made me homeless, back to where I grew up. Yet, now my kit has a new home but I only get to go there once a week for band practice. Thus, this thing is just what I needed! I even have my spare kick pedal so I can hook it to a box or something and use my practice pad and sticks. Thanks again! Your videos rock.

Another tip for the heel up practise, you can get a foot tambourine and attack to your foot, I find that makes you practise a wide ankle motion and a smooth foot movement, without being very loud.

Just found out that my E kit is too loud for my apartment. I would build a noise eating riser board, but even those aren’t guaranteed to kill all the vibe and I’d hate to throw down the money and still not be able to play it. And Roland’s noise Easter floor mats are predatoraly priced. Luckily, I can do this in my apartment and the shop I work at has a music room with a full kit. Honestly wish I would’ve had these vids way back when I started! If anything, having just a pad is ideal for working out kinks in hand technique. Listening to the loud crack of a snare when you’re doing tedious crescendos and low tempo rudiments gets old really quickly.

I'm a... Almost 35 year old pilot. Been wanting to play drums since like 2008 and I finally made it happen this year. But there's still a solid chunk of the month I cannot be near my kit. I have the Drumeo pad where I'm based (that thing is awesome BTW), and I always have my 6" pad and chops sticks in my bag. But my hands have been developing faster than my feet. So this is great. Thanks!

True story. When I was in high school, I air jammed in my room to the radio by using 2 pencils and just tapping my foot and tapping my student desk or even just the air with the pencils. When I first sat in a real kit, I was able to play the drum line from “Hourglass” by Squeeze.
Visualization is a powerful tool for ANY endeavor.
If you know what each drum and cymbal sounds like, you can visualize yourself playing the song. It’s a place to start.
