I am a big fans of Ivan Lendl, I grew up and played tennis when Lendl was playing before he was #1 and after that... A great champion, great moment... 👍

Aaaa. Yes. I remember a time where you could be one of the greatest players of all time and struggle to win at certain grand slams. It was almost a given. This was a time of greatly differing surfaces that required different game styles and tactics to succeed. Unlike today's year long clay coiet tour. It's either faster or slower clay court style tennis. (I love sports, love tennis. But I could never watch clay court tennis as a lad. Nothing worse)

Lendl had the greatest shirts. I wish they would make a retro Lendl shirt collection. I'd buy them. I loved it when Lendl fired a ball right at his opponent. He did it regularly. Imagine Djokovic getting beaned at the net...he'd throw a temper tantrum like the big baby that he is. Lendl looked like he wanted to laugh there. He should have.

Totally fair and like my coach said hitting the ball at someone is part of the game. Some years back I remember there was a final at Indian Wells between Federer and Juan Martin Del Porto. During the third set tiebreak Roger hit a ball square at Juan Martin’s hip. That was a final set tiebreak of a big tournament. No apologies necessary.
That's actually an interesting take, because in Formula 1, they set very rigorous rules in terms of what the manufacturers can actually make, e.g., engine size, cylinders and horsepower, body shape, etc. Making it so that players can only play up to a certain size of racket and/or type of strings, composition, that could be very interesting and possibly show more pure actual tennis ability. @@hart7668 I see what you’re saying but its weird and you’re wrong. Federer isn’t better than other players because he uses a Wilson racket and everyone else is using a Dunlop. If you suck at tennis an old wooden racket will give you the same results as a $200 carbon fiber one. F1 is a weird comparison too because you could make the argument that if you’re driving a Mercedes you need less skill than if your in a Honda. There are regulations in Tennis but they aren’t talked about because the technology in tennis has only changed because the game has changed. Technology has very little to do with tennis at the end of the day.

i enjoyed watching fiery players. Watching Lendl was like watching paint dry. Loved it when Connors was in his prime and wipped Lendl especially at the US Open. Only watched his matches when he played Jimmy or John.
There was the McEnroe - Borg rivalry, but there was also the McEnroe - Lendl rivalry. They met in two consecutive US Open finals and a French Open final. But Lendl tried this crap on with everyone, and not just in this instance with McEnroe. He was, in the three points shown here, mastering McEnroe's service.
My brother and I supported him as kids following his matches for hours...suffering when the US or French audiences were against him as from the first ball, jumping with joy when he won against another favorite and the audience. Not the easiest player to cheer for still 😊 Oddly I learned to appreciate Mc Enroe's interviews and current tv sketches and thought Lendl was indeed not that much of a witty guy. Looking back at the 80ies, my opinion hasn't changed though.
Every tennis player in the whole world does this shot in the heat of the battle, especially if you come running from one side of the court to another. John's behavior is acting, saying the best.
He was a somewhat transitional player. His stroke was better adjusted for the new more powerful racquets, less of the loopy backswing that was standard to wood racquet era.
He showed little care about it as the play ended. That's wrong. Mac was wrong on his end many times. This is one thing that Federer and Nadal really do not have, and now Djokovic is in the same suit.

These are not recreational players. They are professionals playing for money and titles. It’s an acceptable play to hit at an opponent. They all do it and there’s nothing controversial about it. Even “nice guys” like Federer and Nadal do it on occasion
It's actually the best shot to hit a lot of the time. They can lunge at any other shot and if you hit them in the chest, they have very little play on the ball.

When I first started playing tennis in the 70s, I was taught to aim for the net player’s right hip in a doubles match because it is the toughest shot to return. I played mostly doubles in high school and in college and that is how everyone played. The goal was not to hit our opponent with the ball but to win the point. People that say that it’s unsportsmanlike behavior have never played seriously
That hit McEnroe took was nothing compared to how hard my friend got hit in the groin coming to the net against me hitting a rifle shot from the baseline.

I think Mac deserved it. He had no problem talking about how much more talent he had than Lendl, never gave him respect back then. It’s a fair play to begin with, but I think a particularly apt use given the players involved. Call it payback. Lendl didn’t take Mac’s eye out, a tennis ball isn’t going to kill or seriously injure outside of shot to the head-Lendl could have beaned him had he intended to do so.

That's actually a valid shot. If you choose to stand at the net and cannot return the ball (and get hit by the ball in the process) the fault lies with the receiver hit by the ball, not the other way around.
100% agree, the whole purpose of coming to the net is standing between your opponent and your side of the court, thus blocking him from getting the ball there. so yeah when a player comes to the net, he's better be prepared for a body shot

Ha, center mass and it is legal. I went to a big tournament and a lady with reputation for nailing people was wearing a t-shirt which said, be quick or be hit.😆 She was on a prominent court and I watched one of her matches. She was as advertised. She almost knocked the block off of her opponent. Obviously, her opponent did not take the shirt seriously. But, she did repeat the mistake of hitting a sitter and standing there like a deer in headlights.😆 I've been hit. Sometimes I hit back harder depending on the situation.
As a kid growing up, my sports heroes were guys like Nolan Ryan, Vida Blue, Earl Campbell, Randy White, Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Harvey Martin, Jack Tatum, Lester Hayes, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. So when I accidentally came across tennis and saw stuff like this, it just naturally made me think that tennis was a sport for girls, and no "real men" played it. I mean, at that time, I had already been hit in the mouth a half dozen times by bad hops in Little League, had already gotten beaned many times, saw a teammate get hit directly in the eye with a line drive. I'd already watched several professional boxing matches, had already seen MLB and college baseball players get beaned with no issues, so, I naturally thought how much could getting hit in the chest with a tennis ball hurt a grown man??
actually I like players that hit it at me because I know I’m a pretty good chance of getting it back.. better than even anyway.. had a uni games player that was constantly trying to hit me at net and ended up giving it away after he kept losing points..
Hitting a guy at net or buzzing him close is equal to a brush back pitch in baseball. You can't just let a guy camp at the net and volley you to death and the only way to make him think about it is to hit a couple balls at him. Totally within Lendl's province.

Lendl hit a very heavy ball...lots of topspin and velocity. Hard to do with the old frames and strings.

As a kid growing up, my sports heroes were guys like Nolan Ryan, Vida Blue, Earl Campbell, Randy White, Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Harvey Martin, Jack Tatum, Lester Hayes, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. So when I accidentally came across tennis and saw stuff like this, it just naturally made me think that tennis was a sport for girls, and no "real men" played it. I mean, at that time, I had already been hit in the mouth a half dozen times by bad hops in Little League, had already gotten beaned many times, saw a teammate get hit directly in the eye with a line drive. I'd already watched several professional boxing matches, had already seen MLB and college baseball players get beaned with no issues, so, I naturally thought how much could getting hit in the chest with a tennis ball hurt a grown man??

Hitting a guy at net or buzzing him close is equal to a brush back pitch in baseball. You can't just let a guy camp at the net and volley you to death and the only way to make him think about it is to hit a couple balls at him. Totally within Lendl's province.
