Comedian & Conductor ('the funniest conductor alive') brings his own twist to Charles Williams's 'Devil's Galop' (note 'Galop' not 'Gallop').
Charles Williams was born in London as Isaac Cozerbreit in 1893. He began his career as a freelance violinist in theatres, cinemas and symphony orchestras and later studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1933, he went to Gaumont British Films as composer and stayed there until 1939. He composed for many British films and radio shows and died in Findon Valley, Worthing, West Sussex, aged 85.
This 'Galop' is famous amongst radio listeners of a certain generation as it was used by the BBC as the theme tune to 'Dick Barton Special Agent' - a radio series broadcast 1946-51.

When I was a little girl, this music meant bedtime! For those not understanding the significance of Dick Barton, he was a fearless detective who always got his man! The 15 minute episodes were aired about 6.45 every day. The stories were quite harmless, I was only about 8 at the time and the music told the story. I expect modern parents would not let their children go to bed after listening to this!! Radio plays (and stories) are all in the imagination, so for me this is the type of stuff that has given me a lifetime love of radio. And now there are hours of audio productions to choose from. Thank you UA-cam 👏👏👏👏
I appreciate the fact that some of the singers during the singing bit were purposely trying to sound outrageous. It reminds us that the orchestra is not a choir and they are singing to be funny.
'bout sums it up. They were imitating their instruments. Glad you liked it though.
I thought the batteries in their instruments had run out!😂
This music sounds like me, in a mask, hurrying around the food market! Attempting to shop and not get Covid!😊 good job Rainer!!
Thanks! 😁
Repeating phrase "Hope I don't get Covid." Over & over again.
That’s one *hell* of a piece !
It's great, isn't it.
This is a great concept!! Orchestra + choir in one. Cuts down the production cost by 50% BRILLIANT!!!
Sure is. Unfortunately, it kinda doesn't work the other way round: choirs playing instruments.
This guy is a cool conductor! Very human and down to earth in a dramatic way!
Sehr geehrter Herr Hersch,
Tom and Jerry chase. Charlie Chaplin in his numerous funny escapes. This would suit them both
Yeah, that's it.
Actually, I was expecting Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition to come bursting in at the end.
Ah, you guys keep me smiling - excellent upload!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Sounds like your small orchestra got a real workout with that piece. The devil's horse must be winded after that ride! Wonderful.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank goodness someone took up the mantle of PDQ Bach. I love it! I hope he does a US tour.
What a wonderful interpretation and playing. That makes me smile specially at the finish
Great. Net happiness increase. That's what we're after.
That was a fun arrangement!! 😆
Glad you liked it.
02:38 sounds like a parrot on heat!! 😂😂😂
Brilliant, thank you.
Thank you to Conductor Hersch for this amazing rendition of the "Devil's Gallop". I understand that considering the current economic conditions and the necessary expenditure restrictions, Conductor Hersch had to use voices for part of the opus in order to remain within budget. It is wonderful that the Rainer Hersch Fan Channel is sharing these "little gems" especially during the stresses of this pandemic. Peace be with you all, Ciao, L (from USA)
And now the music got me here!
Still, its worth it
Fab. Thanks for listening.
How you can make a hell of an interpretation and keep someone smiling from start to finish (and thanks for let me know this incredible music):
Hey, thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
In all honesty, this reminds me more of That Mitchell and Webb Look. Sir Digby Chicken Caesar and Ginger shall stay in my heart forever.
You and me both!
That's a great arrangement, thanks. I used this piece in a stage show where there was a chase sequence with a lot of characters running on and off stage. The audience loved it.
It's such great chase music, isn't it? We love it.
""dah dahdahdahdahdahdah nahnahnahnahnah" so hilarious after that timestamp...
Loved the Dick Barton programme (and the music ) as a kid. 6:45 every evening and every episode would have them hanging from a cliff by their fingernails or something similar and the next episode they'd get out of that peril, and in 15 minutes into another one.
When you're in a hurry, play this. 😆
Yes, it's got that kind of a feel to it. Thanks for watching.
Depends how late you are... in extreme cases it may feel like a heart attack, LOL!
OMG what a surprise, great imagination!
Thanks. And thanks for watching
Wonderful!!!!! More please!!!!
Watch this space... :-)
Absolutely brilliant, thanks Rainer 😁
No problem 👍
Brilliant! ;)
What a beautiful surprise in the middle, I think this is remarkable you should make it more.
This sounds like silent movie accompaniment to a comedy bar room brawl.
Bravo!👏👏👏
Excellent interpretation!
Congratulations!
Thank you very much!
Haha, ich habe das Video beim Zähneputzen gesehen und musste so lachen, dass ich jetzt den Spiegel putzen muss. 😂
Sehr gut!!! 👍🏻
Prima. Es freut mich. Die Reinigung tut mir leid :-)
Wow¡¡¡ amazing ❤ magic, inspiration.
Yay.
That was fun!
Great. We like it too.
Dad's Army classic.
Nice video, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
I actually thought about doing different some pieces by voice. Now I know it's totally unrecognizable unless you can actually play it first.
I am really glad YOU beat me to it; great orchestra and really unexpected punch!
Fantastic as always. Wish I could see you guys in real life one day
Us too!
If you are wondering where you have heard this before; it was used at the end of the Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition sketch, when they are on the bus to the Old Bailey.
An all in one orchestra
We aim to please. Thanks for watching!
@@RainerHerschUA-cam you are amazing and you're orchestra is very talented because last time I checked violinists are not known for replacing an entire choir
Phantastisch ! 😂 🤣
Danke schön!
Les chants ♥️
No one expects the Spanish inquisition-oh dammnit.
Yes, it’s the surprising adventures of me: SIR DIGBY CHICKEN CAESAR!
Sir Digby Chicken-Caesar approves!
nice
Thanks
NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPA -- oh bugger...
I misread and read 'dick baton" theme 😳 I liked this video tho lol. I miss concerts like this with packed houses due to the virus. But, better to be safe then sorry.
Er, yes. We miss them too :-(
The singing reminds me why I stopped singing & took up the drums. One doesn't have to sing & you get to hit something.
Will you come to Germany someday in the future?
We hope to. Once Corona is a thing of the past.
*insert sir digby chicken Caesar joke here*
Next, can you upload the orchestra playing And I Am Telling You by Jennifer Holliday?
That's a bit of a tall order. But you hum it and we'll join in
You mean…
G, G, A, A, Bb, Bb… D, C, C, F, F.
I've just seen the video about what a conductor is doing, if he isn't counting the money. But this here looks not like that, what Rainer Hersch told us :-)
Two in a bar. Watch again and you will see. Down is 1; up is 2. Needed to do it because we've got a member of brass section in the Orkestra ;-)
@@RainerHerschUA-cam To be honest, I think, I haven't the ear for that in this piece of music. Never thaught, this is a 2/4 beat, - would guess, if I count to eight, it fits in some way :-) Maybe thats why I am singing in choir and not playing in the orchestra.
666th like of the Devil's Gallop! Good thing I'm a soulless ginger...
and they can sing, too :-)
Awe, shucks. Thanks.
@@RainerHerschUA-cam Sie haben ein echt talentiertes Orchester - bin immer wieder auf's Neue beeindruckt :)
And now for something completely different...
I hear a little Beetlejuice in there
komadee aukestra miuseek
btw any twoset fans here?
You wan't to be a comedian but you you father is obsessed with music
Is that a good thing?
@@RainerHerschUA-cam It´s a great thing. No doubt. lol
@@RainerHerschUA-cam obvio lol
love you and your channel and the twist you add to classical music
Uh, I think the harmonica player's vocal was a little over the top. Hmm. Stay safe. -Mike😷
Nanu!? The stethoscope player didn't do to bad though, huh?
Ok, now do it with every sixteenth through twentieth measure BACKWARD.
Hang on. Practising now.
The music was great, but the filming was not as good as usual. The views from the front were from the back of the theatre, too far to see the faces of the individuals. The others were from behind, and I could barely see Mr. Hersch's face. You're as important as the music. Please get a better camera person so we online people continue to enjoy your comedy as well as your fantastic music.
Nah. It was already good before Rainer had a go at it.
