    You know a show is completely fucked up when, in a list of shocking moments, a child being burnt at the stake barely makes the top 5.

      To be honest, that's my number 1. And even that scene in Season 2 when Robert's bastard baby child is killed off (fortunately off screen) was quite fucked up. Yet it worked

      Joe McGurk I think the most shocking moments in game of thrones are truly when things go as one would expect. By that I mean readers and views have come to expect a certain level and degree of twists and depravity. thus when a moment occurs, though rare, where we are left thinking this is going to happen and it does its rather a shock. Though one that can go unseen.

      Something does not have to be real to be messed up or disturbing. In the same truth a person can read a fictional storyline and make comparisons to actual history. Many fictional stories and writers draw inspiration from historical figures and events. Fiction can be just as disturbing and twisted as reality.

    Not the most shocking, but the most satisfying scene for me was Arya feeding Walder Frey his own sons before slitting his throat, all while she smiles over his dying body. I enjoyed that more than Joffrey dying.

      Considering what happened to Arya's family, I'm not surprised that she smiled knowing that the man who committed the worst betrayal spent his last moments coughing up blood.

      you're so fucking right man, i had even forgotten. that was a hell of a twist. perhaps close to no.1 in the books, less so in the show because showjaime is not nearly as cool as bookjaime. but if he finally gets rid of cersei next season the show can still catch up

    • @riccardoalcaro8483
      @riccardoalcaro8483 7 років тому +9

      well jaime doesn't rape cersei (two twin siblings fucking by the corpse of their dead son is still 100% fucked up). in the book at least the thing is consensual. in the show it's ambiguous, lots of show-only viewers I spoke with told me they had not perceived it as rape. but certainly if it was meant to be consensual the editing could have been done better

      I wish I would think the same. Unfortunately the show was going downhill for me ever since they departured from the books. It's not even about them doing so, this I could accept, it's just that their original writing dogshit.

    • @martinmortyry7444
      @martinmortyry7444 7 років тому +3

      To be honest, at the point of season 6 I didn't even mind the departure from the books. The problem is, I didn't feel the "original writing" of that season at all. It lacked any sort of depth or sense, and I found some solutions, such as killing of 3/4 of the King's Landing cast in one explosion, as straight up lazy. The more I think about season 6, the less sense it makes. It wasn't as bad as season 5, I'll give it that.

    • @jonsnowisdaddy4058
      @jonsnowisdaddy4058 7 років тому

      Martin Mortyry why was it lazy though? I mean the Red Wedding killed three main characters within the frame of 5 minutes and we consider that episode to be amazing. We have to think about it in the sense that GOT is coming to an end, Margery and the High Sparrow and all of them had to go, along with everyone else that isn't relevant to the shows end goal.

      What pissed me off mostly was his wife who only realizes at the moment Shireen is about to be burnt alive that she’s a mother after spending years ridiculing her for her illness and fixating on her dead or miscarried male infants. Even though this is a show I realized how important it is for parents to accept their handicapped kids and the power of a mother’s unconditional love. Stannis would not have made this choice if he had not come to believe that his wife did not love their daughter through years of care & emotional neglect.

      Yes, it was just a taster of what's to come in the final battle. And to think that I thought that Loboda would actually make it, tried taking on a white walker and he didn't even flinch.

    • @riccardoalcaro8483
      @riccardoalcaro8483 7 років тому +18

      It's the very best one. Hardhome is the perfect episode: the exchanges between Tyrion and Daenerys (which we book readers were dying for) were perfectly executed, costumes, photography, acting and dialogue. The scene in which Tormund and Jon speak before the wildling chieftains is really really good. You feel the bond between the two strengthening. And the massacre, all its phases, is breathtaking and terrifying. The scene when Jon looks up and sees the four white walker riders is stuck in my head. The end scene was masterful, the silence conveys all the horror. So HH no. 1 episode of the whole series

    How wad Sansa's wedding night shocking after the Joffery sexually tortured two women the season before and Theon was tortured dismembered and and castrated just a few episodes before this one? That was actually one of the most predictable things on this list.

    • @kingRukus39
      @kingRukus39 7 років тому +17

      Yeah, i don't see how Sansa makes this list. Rape was par for the course by that point. Jamie getting his hand chopped off was far more shocking and somehow didn't make the list

    • @EmphaticNod
      @EmphaticNod 7 років тому +16

      I think it made the list, not because RAPE was shocking, but because it happened to Sansa. We - the audience - are led to believe that she's relatively safe from that. She's very young, she's escaped from it before, she had just started learning to play "the game" from Baelish, Brienne had finally found her, and she SEEMED to have a plan.
      The fact that they let the rape happen anyway was also a big shock for book-readers, as the show had taken a huge step away from the source material by this point.
      So yeah, I'd say this scene belongs on the list when you take everything within context...

    • @riccardoalcaro8483
      @riccardoalcaro8483 7 років тому +3

      That was not shocking at all, actually. Cersei knew about the wildfire all along, and she even brought it up several if not many times.
      "I'm gonna burn this city to ashes."
      "I'm gonna burn this city to the ground."
      "I'm gonna burn everyone"
      So when she blew up the Sept, I was like, yep, you've done it, you've finally done it. That scene was predictable if you followed through her story and her perspective

    I remember watching the first season thinking, I really can't fathom enjoying a show about magic and dragons. But how the first episode hooks you is something of pure beauty. After that, I am running around telling my friends "you have to watch this show! its going to be the best show on TV!". Then I even showed them clips, I was re-watching every episode five times in anticipation of the following weeks episode. What HBO has done for me with its original programming in the 2000's is truly a gift. I once had a top three...The Wire, Deadwood, and Sopranos. Now with Westworld and others past, I am slowly approaching my Top Ten favorite HBO shows. Bravo HBO, bravo!

      Same! like "i bet this corny shit is for LARPers" watches* Oh shit, so wrong (just gotta get use to those names then you're good). HBO in generally is really great isn't it? The Wire was my 1st Premium show I watched, just great. s/o Starz - Black Sails and Power are pretty great imo over there (I liked Spartacus granted gets a lot of hate for being a porn w/ an actual narrative but fights were satisfying). Dexter on SHO is great too (really it for me on that station though)

    • @riccardoalcaro8483
      @riccardoalcaro8483 7 років тому +11

      Sansa's rape was not predictable, was certain. She married a guy everybody knew was a psychopath with a penchant for ultra-violence. What were we to expect? And having Sansa marry Ramsay made perfectly sense, so much so that Martin uses the same device in the books, although it's Arya who's married off and although it's not actually the real Arya. But the point about a Bolton-Stark marriage making 100% sense remains

      Also, the "bedding ceremony" that is oh so common in Westeros reinforces one thing -- a new wife is expected to have sex with her husband and give him children. "I don't want to," or "I don't like you" are considered too little, too late once the wedding is over. It's a woman's duty there. It may repel us in our more socially enlightened age, but in a world where women are given away to cement political alliances, this should come as no surprise. It was distressingly common in our world as well as this fictional one.
      What happened to Sansa is horrible. But it's something that we should already have realized happens hundreds or thousands or more times a night all across Westeros between husbands and wives. Tyrion was considered a FAILURE for not raping Sansa. Sansa was told by Cersei that she should just accept that this would happen. It's horrible, not shocking.

    I can't believe the kid who played Joffrey is giving up acting. More power to him, doing what he loves, but he's a hell of a loss. Not many his age can pull off someone that evil without being pantomime. All those little, subtle facial expressions and gestures showing how craven and weak he is behind his bluster and psychosis, he had a hell of a future ahead of him.
