- "Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past". Vanguard is a masterclass in both historical revisionism, and being a professionally bad game. Every year this franchise comes around and I love to hate, it is essentially a guilty pleasure of mine. This year it made me sick-up a bit in my mouth. You know those schools that get covertly infiltrated by activists, who then promptly start to change the school syllabus to service a particular agenda? Well if you do, then Vanguard should feel comfortably familiar.

@Frank I remember looking at all the photos of my grandparents time in WW2 and didn’t notice any women or blacks in the photos but that’s because they were obviously the ones always taking the photos either that or they were to bust actually winning the war while my old Cis white grandfathers had nothing better to do then stand around taking photos

The diversity is ridiculous. In BF2042 the medic is a 50 yr old woman who is supposedly also a special forces operator. I was in the united states army for 8 years, anyone over 50 is not in the fight anymore. They either retire or get so high in rank they are no longer on the front lines. These game companies have zero respect for reality.

They’ve used their little excuse of the conflicts taking place between 2 ‘hired mercenary groups’ rather than 2 countries militaries going head to head, that’s their green light to throw in whoever vs whoever battles. Despite still marking the 2 teams as the US and Russia, it makes no sense whatsoever but as long as DICE can sell their skins and cram characters in battle passes they’re happy.
They just want to satisfy audiences who don't even play their fucking game.

The real issue is that videogame writers are writing school rejects. They didn't get hired for film or TV so they settled for an industry full of nerds that can be bullied into doing what you want.
I remember the OG cod games, not only were they good but in the credits it always said “Dedicated to the veterans of ww2”.
And that was the best thing. It was not just a game it was a memorial. Now it’s just a:” you can be what you want in the ww2 era.”

The Indian operator cracked me as an Indian myself. She was a member of the “Indian national army” to fight against Britain. Why, the heck is she fighting Axis troops then!? Netaji Bose and his INA were Axis vassals fighting against the Allies!! Maybe we can throw historical accuracy out the window then. As someone that took a college elective specifically for WW2, and having done extensive study on the war, this game was painful to play through

And the sad part is that, there are amaizing storys with females in world war 2, that could be used to create games, movies, anime, books and more, the problem is, well you see.
The nigth witches, an all female bombadier team, that operated in real life, and they were fear, and sometimes respected more by the germans than the soviets, because they literaly, turn off the engines of theyre bombers to glide in silence and the enemy dont get away and remember these are not modern bombers that have a nice chance to turn the engines on after turn them off, you have a lot of female snipers in the soviet part too, and sometimes you can have even soviet female tank pilots, not kidding tank crew with all female crew, of course those were very very few.
Look all these examples that could be used for games, and more, but they dont do them because they want representation in the correct places, they dont want equality or anything, they want to replace and re write story, in a total disrespect and mokery of story

We have radio record, videos, photos, it's hard to modify with such strong proof as well as it can be done with very ancient era (Antiquity for exemple is much more re-written because we can always learn more things about it) but for the second world war... Heck, people who have lived throught are still there today to tell us about it...

Honestly the worse thing about the censorship is it can impact learning. Think of how many kids got into WW2 cuz early COD and Medal of Honor? The rewriting history is actually dangerous. There’s too many people who won’t learn about the real WW2 who’s only exposure to it is school they didn’t care for for a week lecture, or movies and video games

Compared to this crackpot of a game Vanguard, World at War made you experience the second world war the way it should be: gruesome, brutal, the story of humanity hell bent on killing each other. From burning Japanese alive with a flamethrower, watching your squadmate's throat get slitted in front of you, to the Nazis murdering survivors in a fountain in Stalingrad and the vengeance of the Red Army against any Nazi they see.
Perhaps that's what made World at War so good: it makes you see and commit questionable actions to make you understand that war is bad and we should do everything to stop it. Not this kind of hodgepodge pushing an agenda no worse than the extremes on the other side.
World at War was the last great WW2 based COD and Black ops 2 was the last great COD in general.

@@johndodo2062 It didn't. It did a large part of the work, but not all of it. Britain fought the Nazis in the desert, the Soviets on the eastern front and the Americans provided lend lease stuff (a lot actually) and did most of the fighting on the western front.

First off they only really showed up in 1944 and their airforce 43.
Secondly DDAY was entirely planned by the British commonwealth, all the logistics/artillery/air support/naval operations was British commonwealth. 3/5 beaches were taken by British commonwealth and Omaha wasnt any harder than any other beach.
DDAY didn’t even require the US to be there - that was a later plan, there were 124 commonwealth divisions ready the two who took Omaha + Utah weren’t “needed” so to speak.
The U.K. discounting colonies and lend lease produced 3x as many tanks - and generally better tanks, 2x as many planes - and the spitfire was year on year the fastest piston engines fighter of the war until the P-47M in 1945 - and 4x the naval vessels.
No, I’m not discounting the American contribution, but it was just that, a contribution. The view the British were a minor underdog who bravely stood against a massive Nazi reich is false - and painted by the British press after the war. The U.K. was the largest empire and combined economy and manufacturing base in the entire world - the U.K. outproduced Germany to such an extent there was zero hope of Germany winning after 1940. The Manhattan project (the research portion) was almost entirely done by the U.K. (American industry was crucial to manufacture the entire bomb - but the U.K. basically wrote the “instructions”.
It was estimated enough atomb bombs would be ready using Belgian Congo uranium by the 1947 to defeat the Nazis.
As I said the British manufacturing base was far larger than the Nazis - and after RAF bombing started (destroying 40% of Nazi factories, and nearly half of all the war materiel produced by the Nazis were spent just against the RAF not even including the USSR or USAAF).
The Royal Naval blockade created all of Germanys resource issues throughout the war. They were starving in winter 1940 and after securing the largest arms for grain deal with the USSR in history they invaded because the Nazis were broke and had no hope of economic survival but through conquest.
17 Million British soldiers fought in the war, this doesn’t include the colossal contribution made by Canada, Australia, India (which assembled the largest volunteer only army in history of 2.5 million troops), New Zealand, South Africa, Rhodesia, and other commonwealth territories.
The idea the UK did any less than the US in WWII is patently false, and the UK is the only one of the “main powers” without who the war would have been unwinnable - regardless of that only being the fact for the USA because they needed an unsinkable launching pad lol.
40% of Russian medium and heavy tanks available in 1941 and 1942 were British made tanks. Moscow, St Petersburg, and Stalingrad would certainly have fallen without them.
And finally, No, I’m not denigrating what the US did, all I’m saying is acting like the U.K. was “saved” when the war was being won by December 1941 or that America did everything or even more is insulting. American civilians didn’t die in the war (well, 8 did). I could very obviously list all the accomplishments the Americans made in the war here and it would be pages long. Their resources they provided were absolutely crucial and they did the vast majority of the work against Japan. However they certainly didn’t do more on the western front - the fact nearly half the Nazi economy was producing AA guns, ammunition, aircraft, and repairing buildings to counter solely RAF bombings proves this. No, I’m not anti American, I am American however havw U.K. citizenship as well and have spent 10 years of my life there and the lack of knowledge and care amongst a minority of Americans for what the UK actually did during WWII is shocking considering without them Europe would now be controlled by Nazis.
In Vanguard 2 they’ll remove guns altogether.

My brother-in-law buys the game every year to see the accuracy and storytelling (US Army Veteran and degree in History). He said that Vanguard is the worst COD game he's ever played, including Ghosts. When I saw Sam Maggs was one of the writers I avoided this game like London prostitutes avoided the dark alleys in 1888.

If you want to find yourself reflected in ww2 by your gender and race, you WILL find it (Russian women on thefront line, Brazilian expeditionary force fighting the axis, Black and Indian troops in the Pacificand Europe etc etc), but forcing a square peg into a round hole instead of diversifying your STORIES over characters is disrespectful to history and those who died and lazy.

To be fair compared to BFV is a masterpiece. I remember playing Vanguard and saying "Man, I can't believe I hated on BFV so bad and now this garbage comes out" like literally at least BFV has the Axis side in the war, something Vanguard didn't do.

Verdun is a game that knows how to display diversity while respecting history by only including non-white units that actually fought on the Western Front in WW1, and by having them in their own separate faction with their own uniforms. This way, you get your diversity without turning half the British Army into Indians, and seemingly the entire German Army into Africans. Seriously, was I the only one who noticed that in Battlefield 1? I am hard pressed to remember a single white German in the multiplayer.

If you have a major in History you'd know about the Free Arabian Legion which had 6,500 Muslims, black people, and other ethnic minorities, or the female Russian sniper with 242 confirmed kills. Remembering this is a video game and not part of an academic historical work I can't work out why you are surprised or expect historical accuracies. I'd call that a very deep and insightful satire about how today's political discussions devolve into people, who by logic should be on the same side, violently fighting each other for no reason - but that would be giving the devs of this trash game too much credit.

My biggest gripe with Vanguard will always be it's side effects on MW2019 and Warzone. The integration broke both games and replaced the relatively balanced Verdansk with an unbalanced and uninteresting map riddled with bugged and incomplete terrain lovingly topped off by the Vanguard-stuff-only game modes that hog the playlist instead of just letting people use the guns and characters from other games like it was intended since Cold War integration.
Here's to hoping this Sh*t doesn't last the full 6 seasons, cuz I'm so done with it.

In the last two years I have found myself being especially nostalgic for MY early days of PC gaming when I was in my twenties and DooM just came out and all the great 90's Shooters of that time. What an exciting period to be a gamer. All devs were "indie" back then and just making great games with unique experiences and seemingly having a great time doing it... back then the money was a by product of passionate, creative people making a great game and now it is quite the opposite. I feel very lucky to have been around back in that time AND be the perfect age to experience and appreciate all those great moments as they happened... of course the main caveat to that is that I am a crusty old bastard now..

I was watching Activision address their stockholders a few years back. They quoted a statistic about how much time the average player is spending in game. I think nonsense like the MVP vote isn't to make people feel better, I think it's to keep people in the game for longer. I also think the lobbies disbanding after each match has a ton to do with this as well.
What’s funny I read a while ago that stockholders were concerned that Activision wasn’t selling enough games maybe 10 years back. What caught the stockholders attention was Activision’s decision to pull the plug on Guitar Hero and they noticed Activision didn’t have as much IPs compared to EA, TAKE-TWO and Ubisoft and said they shouldn’t rely on COD.

Yeah Call of Duty: Ghosts was the beginning on the CoD's decline in my opinion. Ever since then it just hasn't been the same and I haven't really been into the franchise. Black Ops 1 is in my opinion the best CoD game of all-time. Amazing campaign, badass multiplayer with awesome maps and game modes (gun game/sticks and stones), weapon selection as well as zombies. All around fantastic game.
I remember laughing at BO1 for bad graphics but then I was a kid. I entirely trust you on the plot being decent.
Personally I think ghost story wasn't bad but however their version of zombies and the multiplayer was not fun and was not at all bearable.

Call of Duty is mind numbingly tedious and has been for well over a decade. Scripted, hand holding, ideologically politicized, interactive cut scene - single player gameplay. I don't even remember the last one I played, know I had Call of Duty Finest Hour on original Xbox. I think I had one on the 360. I would rather eat my keyboard than endure 5 minutes playing this ****.

I wish we could get a WW1 or 2 game that has you play the enemy to teach history from the other side as well. Make it show the atrocities, their victories, iconic soldiers, etc. I think something like that would be very good at teaching about both wars and help us prevent from going back to that degree or barbarism via teaching the why and how of it.
But that would show that the Germans/National Socialist and the Japs were human also, which goes against the narrative that our overlords are pushing.
Yea I’m not sure if having a kid play as a German soldier raping and murdering his way across the USSR is the way to teach future generations

Perhaps they become desensitized to this type of thing? Perhaps it becomes normalized? Idk about you, but it’s much more moving to hear from survivors the horrors they faced. Is it more powerful to read how a Belorussian mother had to drown her newborn child in a swamp to avoid detection from Einsatzgruppen units, or is it better to play as the Einsatzgruppen soldier hunting down those they deem to be unworthy of life? One seems to emphasize the horrors of war, the other makes a “fun and entertaining” game out of someone’s misery
I’m guessing no response means you have heard the voice of reason, or at least that’s what I hope… but I guess not everyone truly studies the history of WWII considering how upset people are at the fact that women and black soldiers were included in a game (which apparently means that the roles of white men automatically become nullified)

The SS officer @ 45:48 has rank epaulets of an SS-Standartenführer (or SS-Oberführer), equivalent to a colonel in the German army. But in the left collar, he has the rank insignia of an SS-Hauptsturmführer (captain in the German army). The guy was promoted in the shoulders but demoted in the collar :) Destroying history is not enough. They must fuck with the rank system too.
Another thing that I caught @ 46:24: The interrogator is supposed to be Gestapo (Sicherheitsdienst insignia in the left sleeve). So, he shouldn't have a SS insignia in the right collar. Uniformed Gestapo officers with ranks up to Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant-Colonel in the Army) had an empty patch in the left collar, in the place of the SS patch.
