In the music category, you forgot to mention, that Mario's music gets faster, when the timer counts down the last 100 seconds - it may be the same melody, but it hits differently.
Apparently, the ending theme for Super Mario Bros. was going to be longer, but due to hardware limitations, it had to be shortened, the longer theme was later used in Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels, a year later.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure the Famicom had less limitations than the NES, so when Nintendo decided not to sell SMB2:TLL in Western audiences, it was like a green light to use the noncut version. TL:DR, Mario World is good in my opinion, but the level design choices, the amount of times I replay the game, and the amount of people that literally have anything to say that's positive but not negative just make me appreciate Mario 3 more. Don't let that change your opinion though. If you like Mario World, then that's good for you. I'd be blessed to like it, but that simply won't happen to me. I never beat the game without warps though, but I did make it to W7 without them. One day I want to do a no-warp run. I don't like Super Mario World as much though, but one of my favorite Mario games (Mario U) took a lot of inspiration from it, so I have to give credit to Mario World where credit is due: Since Mario 3 was released on the NES, Mario World was Nintendo's first Mario game on the SNES, so they had a lot of experimenting to do. Mario World improved a lot of things that Mario 3 and its predecessors have failed to, like adding in Yoshi. It felt so nice to finally have a dinosaur companion in a Mario game, especially since Mario 3 and World were the two classic Mario games I had first played, and since you don't have a Yoshi companion in Mario 64 or Paper Mario, Mario World stuck out in that department. Mario World also has higher quality music. Even though I like a lot of songs in Mario 3 over Mario World, I'd take the entire Mario World OST over the entire Mario 3 OST any day. Mario World also was the first instance of secret exits since Mario 2, but since this game was on a World Map, it had a reasonable departure from where you took the secret exit. It also made the player have to play an extra level to continue the secret exit path, which was nice. (Also a reason why NSMBU is one of my favorite Mario games.) Mario World had higher graphics, and there were a lot more colors on screen. It was better than looking at a usually orange-dominated Mario 3. Both games were extremely optimal with their color choices. The Koopalings in Mario World had more variety, but some things I didn't like about the Koopaling fights was that the Koopalings usually shared the same boss battle with another. Even though adding Reznor was a big plus, they disposed of Boom Boom. ;-; (Boom Boom would later be readded in Mario U :D) Even though there were a lot of good things to talk about in Mario World, there are a lot of things I don't like about it as well. In Mario 3, it followed the same level building standard from Mario 1. Blocks here, enemies there, ending here. However, as the game progressed, it started putting enemies and blocks together, and adding more enemies in the level. It made it harder to get powerups, and made it harder to play the more you progress in the game. It made a clear to see difficulty curve. It started you out easy, and got difficult slowly but surely as you progressed. In Mario World, it followed the same level building standard from Mario 2. The levels are wacky and absurd. That's not to say that some of the levels aren't fun. The only problem with this is that there is no clear difficulty curve. By World 3, there were a lot of levels in which I kept dying at the same exact point in each level. Butter Bridge I hate the most. This is especially true with the extra levels and Star World levels, where they discard all of the rules. That would be fine if the levels followed similar rules to Mario 1 instead of Mario 2. Mario World also gets boring to restart over and over again from the beginning due to the start being so sluggish and how the game feels like it babies you when you get used to the levels in World 1 and 2. This is also a problem with later Mario games, like Mario 64, Paper Mario games especially, NSMB games, Sunshine and Galaxy games, and Odyssey. Though, this is not a problem with Mario 3. If you are a guy who replays games a lot, you can find where I'm coming from. Mario World is also overrated. Only of my biggest problems with playing the game. Mario World and TTYD suffer from this the most. Mario World can be as criticized as any other Mario game, even though I don't dislike Mario enough to be that guy. I didn't talk about 100%ing Mario World because you can't 100% Mario 3, (unless you count beating all levels as 100%ing it) but I find the system to be fine. Now if you were to make another Mario vs Sonic video, Super Mario 64 vs Sonic Adventure 1 as well as Super Mario Odyssey vs Sonic Frontiers would make for some good suggestions. Outside of that, how about Wheel of Fortune Deluxe Edition for the SNES vs Wheel of Fortune for the SEGA CD? Okay, okay. Like that's gonna happen. This was cool prequel(?), but the real showdown is Sonic the Hedgehog 16bit vs Super Mario World (since that's what kickstarted the whole rivalry in the first place. I've never seen a real video showndown for that).
I actually didn’t start playing Sonic until Sonic 2. And honestly, I think both have a place in the world because both are enjoyable. But I’ll say this - Sonic has the best soundtrack, while Mario has the most creative levels.
Thanks for the video.👍 It was a pretty good and fair comparison. I hope this series of videos will continue. I would like to see the following games go head to head in the next episode: Mario Kart 64 vs CTR Crash Team Racing. The battle of old 3D kart-racing games.
Match point: Which game has the coolest glitches? All the crazy tennis glitch worlds should be enough to make it a tie. Also small fire is the coolest powerup in SMB.
Love this game V game style video! It's pretty amazing that Sonic ran and looked that good on an 8-bit system. Being at the end of the Master System's life cycle (pretty much) helped, of course.
This whole video was designed to compare the two. And Darby specifically asked what people thought themselves. Obviously the comments are literally SUPPOSED to be about which one people think are better. X.x
Objection on Replayability: The whole "arcade loop" idea SMB has isn't good replayability, because there is no incentive or motivation to do other than "play it harder". Sonic on the other hand has it that you can explore the levels a little more so you can find hidden spots you missed and (unlike Mario) the levels aren't just "go forward in a line all the time".
I'm sorry, but Mario music is clearly more memorable and iconic. (The only Sonic that stands out is Green Hill Zone, the rest could be any game; that same "tinny" sound). It's also nice how the graphics are more clear, and an enemy is clearly distinct. (Now that we're playing the Sonic simulator, I often find it hard to see those dang motobugs and crabs and other things).
Well how many times have you played sonic and how many times have you played Mario? I played through both back to back and then made my decisions as fairly as I could. Both games have great music. So you really can’t go wrong.
"Green hill zone is the only song that stands out in sonic" Literally every sonic game/that 8-bit one: Do we have no memorable music? Spring Yard? Star light? Angel island? Casino night?
I'm sorry but as much as Yuzo Koshiro's 8-bit Sonic OST is great, Super Mario Bros. is one of the holy grails of video game music, every jingle and melody is tuned to perfection.
6:16 You should’ve put the seen from the Mario movie where Bowser and Kamek were playing piano together but then Bowser just shuts the piano on kamek's fingers.
Sonic has always had a really nice presentation and soundtrack. You can tell they really care about the quality and put a lot of work into it. The downside to Sonic is in its core design.. it wants you to go fast, and you want to go fast, but the levels are designed in a way that punishes you for going fast lol
I find that mario and sonic as games are drastically too different to compare and compete with each other on whats better. The only similarities they have is that they're both mascot platformers. Ultimately it tailors down to personal taste because of it. However as characters id say it leans more in Sonics favour in the sense he has more of an evident personality and would even say his design is cooler and more exciting. He also gets better additional media, maybe not so much movie but certainly comics. The IDW comics are a great read. Ultimately it comes down to game quality though and sadly Sega doesn't quite know what to do with sonic. Very few modern games are truly amazing. At best theyre decent, nothing more. Its a debate with no clear answer really though. At the end of the day it falls on what game gives you the experience you want.
Fun to see some Hotel Mario cutscenes into the mix and I get a bit more and more spoiled by the movie... but at this point it could be my fault. Either way, interesting type of video and I wouldn't blamed Darby to giving the Story point to Sonic only, it sounds pretty more epic to me at least. Edit: Sounds like at the outro Super Mario Bros. won anyway but inside the heart of yours... and other people that agrees.

Score: 7-2 Power-Ups Winner: Mario Reason: Sonic doesn't have very good power-ups. Score: 8-2 Level Design Winner: Mario Reason: More iconic. Score: 9-2 Presentation Winner: Sonic Reason: More advanced graphics. Score: 9-3 Overall Winner: Mario
I like both Sonic and Mario, I didn't really play many Sonic and Mario games though, for Sonic I played 1, 3, and Heroes, and for Mario, I played Mario All-Stars, which has the first 3 games and the Lost Levels, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, I might have played Dr. Mario as well, but I don't think I was that good at it.
I also played New Super Mario Bros. U and 2, but I wasn't that good at those either, especially 2, I always had to use the White Tanooki suit in that one, I may have played more Mario games, but it seems that I'm better at the Sonic games, I never even beat New Super Mario Bros. 2 all the way, I did 100% the First NSMB Game though. I even maxed out the score counter on the first one, I got all 9s for my score.

In all honesty, this comparison was balls. Aside from the six-year difference, Sonic for the Master System was a game at the end of the lifespan of the system and used the blueprint of the MegaDrive/Genesis Sonic 1. A more fair comparison would have been SMB1 with the first Alex Kidd game, since that was Sega's earlier steps into the genre, and they already had several of those games out before Sonic was even a thing.
I have to disagree with the level design rating, Super mario has repeating themes where some of the levels are carbon copies with slightly more difficulty. the layout is the same but the moving platforms are smaller and had bullet bills.

@@blobanimatesb7466 I mean the new super games were still better than most sonic games put out in the last 20 years, and even if you don't think that, since the jump to 3D Mario has put out arguably the best line-up of 3D games out of any series

IMO it really comes down to how the game feels when playing, so my winner would be Super Mario because Sonic never was the same amount of fun than Super Mario gave me. On the other hand I can also understand when someone else prefers Sonic due to both games even when being platformers feel quite different while playing them. It is always a matter of taste and both games deserve their place in videogame history :)
I love both franchises but Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Master System can't even touch the iconic original Super Mario Bros. for the NES. The cast in this game does look way different from the Donkey Kong universe, while they still have the same Mario Bros. from the arcade, they introduced Princess Peach, the girl that isn't Pauline & Bowser The King Of The Koopas, the villain that isn't Donkey Kong. Can you imagine they still stick with the same cast as the original Donkey Kong game in Super Mario Bros.? 👌🏻

Agreed. Also, I never played Sonic 2, just Sonic 1, 3, and Heroes.

Love this game V game style video! It's pretty amazing that Sonic ran and looked that good on an 8-bit system. Being at the end of the Master System's life cycle (pretty much) helped, of course.

Darby can you PLEASE play through all the 8 bit Sonic games.. they're great and unique. C'mon now.
The question we have been waiting for
people ask me this all the time. I think they mean just overall which is better. But it gave me the idea for this video xD
Could you do Super Mario Bros 3 vs Sonic 3 and Knuckles? I would totally watch it! Those two are peak platformers!
"SoNiC bEtTeR tHaN mArIo" or "MaRiO bEtTeR tHaN sOnIc" comments should stop. Both are pretty awesome
No
Yes
This whole video was designed to compare the two. And Darby specifically asked what people thought themselves. Obviously the comments are literally SUPPOSED to be about which one people think are better. X.x
Objection on Replayability:
The whole "arcade loop" idea SMB has isn't good replayability, because there is no incentive or motivation to do other than "play it harder".
Sonic on the other hand has it that you can explore the levels a little more so you can find hidden spots you missed and (unlike Mario) the levels aren't just "go forward in a line all the time".
Spitting facts , right there you are .
Kirby vs the legend of Zelda
Although I love Kirby it's LoZ all day
@@markbelin9869 LOL 😂

@@BlueTelevisionGames yeah XD
They're from the same company 💀
I'm sorry, but Mario music is clearly more memorable and iconic. (The only Sonic that stands out is Green Hill Zone, the rest could be any game; that same "tinny" sound). It's also nice how the graphics are more clear, and an enemy is clearly distinct. (Now that we're playing the Sonic simulator, I often find it hard to see those dang motobugs and crabs and other things).
Well how many times have you played sonic and how many times have you played Mario? I played through both back to back and then made my decisions as fairly as I could. Both games have great music. So you really can’t go wrong.
great and iconic is not the same thing though
"Green hill zone is the only song that stands out in sonic"
Literally every sonic game/that 8-bit one: Do we have no memorable music? Spring Yard? Star light? Angel island? Casino night?
BTG I’m subbed! I like Mario better, but Sonic is also good?
That's a fair assessment!

sonic forces:
Mario is better
I agree. I like Sonic more then Mario. But I still like super mario bros. Also do Crash Bandicoot vs Banjo. P.S. Crash is better than Banjo.

It would be cool to see which game version is better on sega or Nintendo, or other systems.
but i tink mario has more good games over the years.
In all honesty, this comparison was balls.
Aside from the six-year difference, Sonic for the Master System was a game at the end of the lifespan of the system and used the blueprint of the MegaDrive/Genesis Sonic 1.
A more fair comparison would have been SMB1 with the first Alex Kidd game, since that was Sega's earlier steps into the genre, and they already had several of those games out before Sonic was even a thing.

sonic 3 and knuckles vs mario wonder
Fun Fact: in 1990 there was an even OLDER version of Sonic 1 named the "Tokyo Toy Show" this build could be SUPER rare!
forced debate, sonic is one of the most iconic series of all time, but in the last nearly 2 decades one series games are flopping while the other is selling tens of millions a game.
Although the games that are selling that much aren't that good.. and the mainline 3d mario games is in a drought
@@blobanimatesb7466 I mean the new super games were still better than most sonic games put out in the last 20 years, and even if you don't think that, since the jump to 3D Mario has put out arguably the best line-up of 3D games out of any series
