Lifted Subaru Impreza gets 30" Tires × Rot Wagon

- Fitting 30" knobby mud terrain tires on the lifted Subaru & testing them on an offroad trip up north. Work great! They are inexpensive "Forceum M/T" 235/75R15 which measured 30" / 760mm tall (even though the advertised size is 29" / 730mm). At only $70 a piece I'll have to keep an eye on the wear and rotate them often, but well worth a try.
The price fluctuates often, so you can score a deal if you're patient, here's a link to search for them: www.ebay.com/sch/66471/i.html...

Finally some proper tires for this thing! ...and I'm not mad the whole set cost as much as a single wheel on the Land Rover 😎
Nice!
Didn't wanna pull off from Rover things... but those old AT tires were getting sketchy!
What's bonkers is my every day driver is a 2012 Forester
@@PavelowGunner1122 So what you're saying is... if we do a meetup/trailrun down by you I should bring the Subaru too on a trailer behind the Rover? 😎
@@Tinker1837 i mean, she's been a good girl. We may end up trailering the rovers and pulling them with the Roos😅
I'm already thinking about a Cummburu... working on the name though
Great to see the Subaru again. Fun project, great ride.
It's probably the most fun I've had with a daily driver yet.
dude this is beautiful, glad to break that 100 like on this video! Can't wait to start doing this on my subie next year!
Thanks & it's been such a randomly fun project, never expected it to become something quite like it's become.
I like the paint pen trick to easily see if the lug nuts move. I’ll definitely be getting some of those jack stand all in one setups soon. Those are awesome! Great video 👍
That's something I picked up from working with world of rally & offroad racing. They're heavy but handy! I think I have 5 of them now, thanks!
All right I admit I clicked on it to laugh but that gotta be the coolest suburu I have seen!
It's been a fun project to try all sorts of random stuff on!
I'm in love with this. I just got a 09 Impreza wagon. I can't wait to do some of this too it.
It's so fun!
Great to see upgrades to the roo, waiting for more and more!
More incoming! And I really should do videos on some of the mods I've already done too (snorkel, lift, roof rack, etc).
Tinker It is the right time I should ask you about car, how does the car handles? And what changes have you done to entire suspension? I look for a daily car, maybe more adventurous and I am totally fascinated with this Impreza project (maybe since my brother bought slightly lifted 06' outback with h6 engine and hell, how much fun it is to drive this thing). I love pre-2000s cars, my plan is to buy an Impreza with ej22 engine, which as I read is bulletproof, lift it, put new wheels, get this thing a roof rack and some led bars. Then have infinite fun!
@@jakubb4918 It can be a handful to drive. The anti-sway bars are removed & the center of gravity is much higher now. I don't mind a daily that's a challenge, & this has been maybe the most fun daily I've had yet. I've been thinking mine needs an H6 swap! Or turbo... or both! Mine has the 2.2 single-port, not much power but ever reliable :)
To be able to get out and do that with confidence is priceless
A fun project for sure!
I like the trails in the video very scenic
This car is awesome! I have a 97 outback that I want to turn into a battlewagon like this soon when I get the money... looks so fun
It was the most fun for the money I've ever had in a project car!
I love that you have so many subarus there. This is something amazing you got there, I wish I had it in my country. Although I have a Jimny, this is something else. I love Impreza since I was born I guess lol. I would love to have a wagon turbo like this. or a 22b. Or actually any one that has a turbo :D
Lovely build, looks budget but feels priceless.
This thing is fkn sick. God I love the value of this buid. Living in Seattle, even these retro wagons sell for north of 10k. Hipsters love them. I've had my eye out on a bargain, WRX wagon for years.
That much? Yikes! Just need to find a rotten one like this to make it ratty style :)
Come visit California and scoop one for about $3k.
Come to Colorado and hit some REAL trails with that beast
Colorado is badass! I've missed the place ever since my first visit.
This is badass AF!!! I love it
It's a handful, but damn good fun!
I love your combo jacks. Never seen that before
Those things are so handy! They're called either "PowerJack All In One" or "Unijack" and they usually go on sale for as cheap as $30 from places like Tractor Supply. They are relatively heavy, but having everything all in on rocks (not to mention the big flat bottom for when you're in the dirt).
Noice!!! And couldn't help but notice MCM chopping action.
Glad you like & yeah I couldn't resist sticker bombing that thing 😁
That thing is so sweet. I’m surprised I don’t see more OBS’s set up like this
My thoughts exactly! Might as well have fun with them before the rust ends it.
Sweet rig, I'm from Northern Michigan also, this is the plan for mine 😎😎
By the looks of your profile image you have some cool rides too!
Looks good Tinker!
I just passed on a set of those for some Thunderer M/S Trac grips for my disco.
245/75/16s got em for 115$ /each delivered from ebay. Im up in northwest WI
And they work really well.
Good luck!
Thanks! That sounds like a good deal too, & always worth looking for them because it sure is easy to spend a ton on tires.
there are TWO lifted subarus in Missoula ! One is an outback and the other is a station wagon like yours ! You could be starting a TREND ! LOL
I think people are starting to realize they're cheap fun!
Forgot to say awesome rig by the way
Thanks, it's a wicked fun drive.
Thats awesome, i love those old impreza outbacks. I want to put some forester struts and bigger tires on my 99 outback but i do mostly street driving so i dont want tons of added weight, less handling and less gas mileage.
I'm digg'n it!
It's been a surprisingly fun project! From $300 junker to an outlet for trying all sorts of weird ideas I'd never do on my other builds.
Dude FUUUUUCK YESSSSS! I have a 2017 Impreza base. I'd love to lift it and get A/T tires. Especially since I work on a ranch and love to go hiking.
It's so much fun! And has been surprisingly reliable for as modded as it is 🤔
Dude same ! I have a base 17 and I’m looking to do this exact thing and make it my overland ride
that thing is a beast! I currently have mish mash of different balding tires on my rig lol
Is that a MFNG JOCKO shirt? Been using your videos as a guide for months and just now noticing ! Good to know theres more troopers out there.
Sure is! Don't think I've ever had something as effective as hearing "Good." was at getting me to push harder 💪
GOOD get after it brother DEFCOR!
😎🤘
Sweet rig!
Thanks!
Gosh! That’s a beauty. I have a 2000 Outback Sedan. Would love that kind of look on it. I’m not handy at all. :(
Well I don't have any training in these things, just learned by trying things (with plenty of failure mixed in!) and this kinda cheap/random project is perfect for experimenting with.
That sound. Oooo
I've never heard of those tyres but I'm from Indonesia. Cheers!
They were new to me as well, but honestly I'm impressed so far!
I got them on new ranger and they feel great to me but was wanting to see more film of off-road in mud and such on this clip. I have only done a little bit of rock crawl since I don't have big mud pits to try and another vehicle to pull me out if I do get stuck. 😆
Pretty good for the money!
I've watched quite a few different videos about Subarus like this. I think yours are a bit cooler since you are in Michigan, as am I
Man that things sweet.
It's a handful to drive but damn fun in the same right 😎
What is the backspacing on those rims?
Sounds good for the ride along! I recognize a few of those shots. Have any video/pics of the Subaru Forester recovery?
I have a video, just waiting to send a copy along before I post anything, but here's a pic of it in right in the middle of some hard pulls: i.imgur.com/s4whHVd.jpg
I like the lifting of the Subaru impreza wish I had mine same too..
How did you lift ur Subaru impreza n can u pls..
It's really fun :D
Hey @Tinker What kind of spacers did you use to fit the new wheel size?
Those are some forged aluminum 5x100 to 5x4.5" that I found online, forget where now, but I highly recommend forged over the cheap ebay junk.
Sick!!!!
It's so fun :D
hi, do u know what is the biggest tire that can go on this impreza? My impreza wagon has forester struts with stock steelies
Boa ey....Oo...
Grazy Subaru....NICE
I do not get such a Street License in Germany ...
Greetings from Germany
Thanks & welcome :)
I noticed the bit that showed the GPS reading the speed. How much do the tires affect the speedo? I've got a white gc8 I ordered my forrester struts on but I'm only doin 28s. Just kinda curious what I'll see
These tires? Quite a bit! So much so that I made myself a set of reference markings on the gauge in the case that the GPS or phone faults (photo here>>>) i.imgur.com/7N0U5L4_d.jpg?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium
Well now that I have an 03 Forester, I guess I’ll be watching your Subaru build too. Does yours have rusted strut towers?
Sadly yes... I've taken care of most the rust except those nasty rear strut towers! It's just around the base, so I'm planning to wrap them up with steel plate & then tie together the tops with a tube to reduce flex in that weakened area.
A floor jack and floor stand all in one cool
Yeah! I was skeptical at first, but now I own 5 of them, just about every time I see them on sale for $30-40 I grab another.
@@Tinker1837 Where did you find them?
@@Derek_00Mustang83 Best source I know of is Tractor Supply, since they often go on sale 👍
@@Tinker1837 thank you sir
Do you have any issues with the spaces and wheel bearings I have 215/70/16 on my forester they are as big as I can get under the struts
No issues with the spacers, and I did have an issue with a front wheel bearing, but it was my fault from installing a replacement poorly.
I want an outback. Do you need to change diff gears or trans to make it off road or get bigger tires? Is it basically a lifted Impreza?
Need? No. Does it help? Yes. My "Outback Impreza" in this video has 4.11 gears which helps, & the Forester's 4.44 gears would be even better.
Nice!!
😎👍
What suspension are u running? I got the same set up almost. I'm looking to upgrade from the "stocks"
Forester struts with SJR lift kit spacers (tons more detailed info if you check out the build thread in the description)
What kind of rims did you use?
what rims did you use? I have a Subaru Buggy project but I dont know what rim can I use,my original rims are smalls
Those are the kinda wheels you'd find on Jeeps & lots of other small SUV's. They are 15x8 with adapters to fit their 5x4.5 to the Subaru's 4x100
Tinker hey do you have a link to the tires and rims you have on these you just got on? And how about the lift kit? Also that jack stand that has a hydraulic lift built in 🙏 thanks
The wheels are just generic 5x4.5" steel wheels, the jacks are " Powerbuilt All-In-One", and the tires are linked in the description.
Greate ideea 🤘🤘💪🏼🏆 👏👏
Little monster car haha!
If it had flairs it would be a literal dream setup
Agreed, the tires stuck out that far tends to be a MESS
I'm going to buy the 99 impreza obs on monday. You ever think about doing a walkthrough/overview of this build? I'd be super interested to see a vid like that!
I should do something like that since it has so many modifications that are not in videos yet 🤔
@@Tinker1837 Sweet!
Where at in Michigan where these trails? I’m in the grayling area and some these looked like some spots outside of traverse
You nailed it! Those were Mesick & Kalkaska & north of the Baldwin area 👍
Do you have a video on how to install an SJR lift kit?
May I ask what trails? I'm from bay city mi but am in the northern part quite a but and just bought a subie myself. Took it out on the trails on m61. Stock 99 legacy sedan. Handled great but I want to be able to clear the same size tires as you
Most of that was fire-roads and forestry roads around Mesick. Some footage was from norht of Bladwin (Lincoln Hills & Lil Manistee trails) and other was north of Manton (North Missaukee trails)
What struts are you using? I can't believe the geometry looks fairly accurate with what appears to be OEM arms! Are they as stock as they look?
We'll those are Forester struts, but they have big 4" tall spacers on top to get all that lift, also spacers for the front/rear subframes. It's roughly a 50-50 split between suspension & body lift at this point. I'd like to ditch the spacers & set it up for proper long travel shocks & ditch the OEM arms for tubing & with spherical joints. But first I have some rust to tackle!
@@Tinker1837 - thanks for the reply! I recently came across a '91 Just with the CVT tranny, viscous diff, and EFI... it has less than 100k miles for $1,500. Thought it would be a cool trail vehicle for my son.
Just bought a 00 Outback, maybe I'll see you around Manistee sometine.
Hope so! If I play my cards right it will be STI powered by next season :D
Whats the offset on those rims? I'm getting steelies but can't find much reference on what people are running for offset.. thanks
15x8 size, 4" back, 5x4.5" lugs (converted to 5x100 w/spacers)
What wheel spacers do you have on there and size in inches. I can’t get my tires to fit.
Tons of details in the link in the description!
Hay I'm from indonesia enjoy your tires
What brand is the Jack stand or where do I get it?
Those are called "PowerJack All In One" or "Unijack" & I've found are least expensive at Tractor Supply.
Omg never seen jack/jack stands before. Brilliant piece of kit man. How much were they?
Those are "Powerbuilt All-In-One" & if you have a Tractor Supply near you they go on sale for $30-40 fairly often. Hard to beat that price! Love those things, work great when you're in the dirt & can't have anything sinking. I think I have 5 of 'em now.
Did you use old license plates to fill in/patch those big rusty spots?
What a brilliant idea..
I did! An old hotrod trick. It was funny to see people notice them and laugh after staring for a few moments when walking by in parking lots etc
You running spacers on those tires? If so what size spacers you got for totally not going against your disclaimer reasons
Yes, they also convert from the Subaru bolt pattern to more common small truck pattern for more wheel options (all info is in description)
On you first lift did you need the front Control arms from the Foerster? Too much positive now the struts/coils are in....
I did not need them & I just kept them around for spares.
@@Tinker1837 thanks for the come back. Really enjoy watching the Soob being changed.
Where was that power line trail looks like something near where I live.
Near Wellston in the national forest area if I recall correctly.
Great video 👍 what's your rear break conversion?
Thanks! Those rear discs are from a WRX, but plumbed in using a custom stainless flex hose ABS-delete setup.
How does the awd system respond to the different size wheels/tires?
The same as before, pretty sluggish. It's an auto so thankfully it was easy to solve that with a center diff switch mod that allows me to lock it in solid.
Hey tinker did adding a lift kit and boggers add noticeable wear on suspension parts and trans
So far it's just been wheel bearings (trans, brakes, shocks, cv, etc all okay) that haven't been happy after this much modification, replaced a front & a rear so far after 2+ years. But that being said, I'm not sure if it's from the lift/tires or from hard/trail driving (both?).
So my setup is a lil bit diff from yours. Im using 99 outback oem lift kit. Consisting of the struts and trailing arm bracket. When lowering the subframes with the spacers im probably going to need to add the steering joint from the outback over to my impreza huh? I recently put my missing outback struts over since the ones i was provided were blown. Now that im fixing some rust on the wagon ive decided to revisit the lift project. I added the struts in back and now i have this severe rake look to it it sits so much higher now in back than when i had a 96 legacy strut outback spring and 99 impreza tophat. (Thats all i could find in a hurry to get my car back rolling again) but now i have new 99 outback struts and impreza tophat. Im looking add the outback front transverse link front subframe spacer. transmission spacer. Rear diff spacer. And rear subframe spacer. Plus trailing arm bracket spacer to fix caster issue.
Any help would be appreciated.
I actually took my steering u-joint right out, made a long scratch on the shaft for reference, and cut apart to weld a tube in for lengthening (be sure to keep it cool during!!). I converted mine to Forester all around, which includes modifying the rear tophat bolt pattern (this may fix the big camber you're getting). If you run into any other mismatches in camber/toe/caster etc, then try to match your suspension components all from the same platform (all Forester, all Outback, etc). Hope that helps & good luck, they're way fun lifted up!
@@Tinker1837 i was trying to keep from drilling holes thats why i swapped over to my gf tophats. I still dunno why it sits so much higher in the rear now after i switched over to outback struts/impreza tophats.doesnit need to settle or something? I have too much caster not too much camber. As for the steering link i think im gonna use the outback link since i cant weld nor have a welder handy to use myself.
Jocko shirt👍👍
Nice. Seems like it would eat through some decent snow and mud. I love the older Subes. The newer cars look over-styled. This thing looks more like a trar. What is the brake and bearing wear like, considering you have 100 pounds of rotating mass hung on a wheel bearing designed for a wheel/tire half the weight?
I upgraded to WRX/STI brakes so honestly it's maybe overbraked now if anything & wear is low so far.
@@Tinker1837 Yeah, I found that video later about the brakes. Wheel bearings are supposed to be fast-wear items on these things according to the forums. Long term it would be interesting to see the bearing wear if any from doing everything the wrong way. BTW what wheels did you get? I can't find any 5 on100mm 15x6" steel wheels , with less than 48mm offset, that are hub-centric for less than a mint. And are your wheel-spacers hub-centric? Honestly I'm finding for the price of the "wrong" wheels plus spacers to correct offset, you can buy brand new custom aluminum wheels with all the "right" specs. But who wants to spend $400-$600 just for a set of winter wheels? Especially on a 95 Legacy LSi!
Your tyre Made in Indonesia , that's my beautiful country sir 😊
I like how it looks Is that the 2.2 motor?I just got one is a 1995 and would like to make it look like yours 😁
Yep! The "single port" 2.2L four cylinder.
How much mileage are you getting on your wheel bearings with that offset?
Honestly real hard to say with the odo being completely out of whack on those tires.
What trails, im usually in saint helen and rose city?
Those were mostly around Mesick & Baldwin. Some named trails: Lincoln Hills & Little Manistee, plus a mix of seasonal, unimproved, & forest service "roads".
How much lift have you done on this? Also how much trimming have you done on the rear arches. Im lifting mine at the moment with 5" chassis drop and 7" strut spacers on forester struts and springs on the same body impreza but have high low ratio gearbox 🙂
I've got ~1.5-2.0" in Forester struts & 4" in a SJR subframe + strut lift kit. I had to trim the rear arches right up to the doors. That's a serious lift you're putting together & those dual range boxes are interesting!
@@Tinker1837 nice. is your airbag system still hooked up? Im just a bit worried mine would go off if i tap anything hard enough
It is, but I think you'll be okay! I haven't fully jumped mine yet _(next season I will, just need to brace some things)_ , but I've run it hard enough on trails to explode a wheel bearing & knock interior bits loose.
Can u tell me the carjacks that u use? Those are what i need!
Those are called "PowerJack All In One" or "Unijack"
hell ya man! those tires look beefy!
also your jack stands are fucking gnarly whered you score those?
Those are "Powerbuilt All-In-One" & if you have a Tractor Supply near you they go on sale for $30-40 fairly often. Hard to beat that price! Love those things, work great when you're in the dirt & can't have anything sinking. I think I have 5 of 'em now.
Did you have to lengthen the steering coupler?
For the 2" strut swap lift? No. For the big 4" SJR lift kit? Yes!
Did you get your wheels aligned in the end...
Yes but only a very basic alignment in the driveway, because most alignment shops would laugh me out of there with a rig like this lol!
How much did the car cost you? I wanna do the same project, that's why I'm asking
It was $300 actually, and even with all the modifications the total cost to date is only a little over $2000
Northern Mi! Hell yeah!
Best place around to test some tires 👍
Not the best place for gas prices though, am I right? Lmao
Was this taken in traverse city area?
Nearly! The off-road clips were recorded to the south a bit in the Mesick / Hoxeyville area.
Would take the outer edge of meat a little thicker over cupping any day... how often were you rotating ?
I was admittedly being lazy on the rotation, only did it twice. Didn't expect to drive it so much! But I'm really glad I did since my daily before it was an enduro... so at least I got a break from slippin n slidin on 2 wheels during those extra icy winter days.
Crazy man... musta saved a lot on front pads !
I have a set of those jackstands. They’re handy.
Sure are! Nice having a jack & stand in one unit, not to mention anytime you're in the dirt that big flat base is a lifesaver.
so are those 30" tires on just the forester suspension? or did you add a lift kit as well? if you did add a lift kit would the 30" tires work without the lift kit? I'm trying to do something similar to my 96 impreza wagon!
Lift kit! A great 4" kit from SJR. No, you would have to do SO much cutting on Forester suspension only. If you're handy you could make a roughly 2" kit fairly easily.
@@Tinker1837 alright, so its a total 4" lift? the forester suspension and sjr kit correct?
The Forester struts bring it up ~2 inches, and the SJR lift kit brings it up 4 inches more.

Hey. How have you rised the car so much?
A "lift kit" from SJR
Where’d you get the wheel adapter?
Ebay, but I'd you goo there too just be sure to avoid the cheap chinesium cast adapters (these are forged aluminum).
Impreza which year?? I'm asking because it's a budget car. A reply will be appreciated. And is the lift diy? If not, where can I find it?
1999 & the "build thread" link in the description has everything you could want to know about it, tons of detail on there.
@@Tinker1837 thanks
At this point is it just lifted with the Forester Struts and Taller tires?
No, it has a big 4" lift kit as well.
Tinker thank you sir, I will acquire an 04 Impreza Wagon 2.5 with a blown head gasket. 30” might be a bit much but some sort of Ralley Stance and tire setup would be perfect.
Yeah these tires are a bit extreme & hard on the components, but it's been a fun experiment so far :)
Is that in white hall area?
The offroading parts were out on the tracks between Mesick & Peacock.
Those tires look pretty friggen badass for 7p bucks a piece who cares how quick they wear
Right! Hard to complain about a deal like that.
What wheel dimensions are you running? Just the lug adapter or any other spacers?
Those are 15" x 9" wheels with 1" thick spacers that change the bolt pattern to 5x4.5"

Hi what a job!
I wanna linft a legacy 2000 with forester strutts but I have some questions... How works the axles and the dirección pieces? I read of u lift a subaru broke a lot of axles... Sorry my english 😅 I wanna read your experience!
Greetings from patagonia!
Thanks.
Axles don't break too often, but using Forester axles can help. I never broke an axle after driving this one for years, but I did have a few axle rubber "boots" rip.
What kind of exhaust does he have on his subi
I custom fabricated the whole thing. I made unequal length headers with 1.75" pipe for it's 2.2L single-port engine (because it needed the Subaru rumble) with a 2-to-1 collector into 2.5" at the high-flow cat right before the first v-band, then a small resonator running tucked up tight until another v-band just before the rear diff, then up and over to a vibrant turbo muffler and ending in a VW Beetle style megaphone chrome tip.
