Nabeel Nabi you feel sorry for your Karachi first. Lahore has more than 90% punjabi speakers, Dhaka has more than 95% Bengali speakers,Peshawar has more than 95% Pashto speakers.
It is only you Sindhis who have lost their capital city Karachi to these Urdu speakers. Not only Karachi even Hyderabad. So Sad !!
Moreover India has a Punjab to preserve Punjabi, India has a Bengal to preserve Bengali, Afghanistan has a Pashtunistan to preserve Pashto. There is only one Sindh in Pakistan where you guys promoting Urdu.

Punjabi is not a dying language. It is a language that has been neglected by the Pakistani Punjabis who form the majority of the Punjabi population worldwide. It’s a shame to abandon your mother tongue for another language that is imported from U.P India with is Urdu.

Am chief officer in Vships India. Being sailor i hv sailed with so many different crew and officers, not only frm India but from different countries all over world, in last 15 years of my service. As a turbaned Sikh and being Punjabi i hv recieved so much of respect from people frm all over India and World that i proudly broaden my Chest and feel high in saying that i am from Punjab and my language is Punjabi. I hv never seen anyone in my life who could disregard Punjabi language, esp nowdays when Punjabi singers hv taken Punjabi music to World platform. Actually what i think in Pakistan problem is not in punjabi language, problem exist in people who speak Punjabi. In India Punjabi language reflects Punjabi people in Indian Punjab, who are respected in most of the Indian and foriegn cultures being brave, hardworking, trustworthy. So i can say in India, Punjabi language is respected because of Punjabi people. Pakistani Punjabi speakers kindly think over it, why Punjabi is disregarded like this in Pakistan. People in Charda Punjab will lay their lives but never let it happen... as Punjabi lies in our blood in form of Gurbani.

  • @oky834

    Indian Punjabis are similar somehow.
In the cities, Hindi is slowly taking over. However, the village people in Indian Punjab are more influential and are in different parts of the world; that’s why it looks like Punjabi is more spoken and respected. But if we move to cities like Jalandhar, Patiala, Mohali, Ludhiana(and other eastern Punjab cities), people speak Hindi. We were not allowed to speak in schools and had fines for speaking Punjabi in the English/Hindi medium schools, which are 75% of the schools in Punjab.
But now the trends have changed. Punjabi is going more and more global. Thanks to Canada, the UK Punjabis, and the other NRIs, they are an integral part of reviving Punjabi again at a mass level in a short period. Also, the songs have made Punjabi a global language. The Punjabi music industry is enormous. If, in this case, the movie culture built in both Punjabs increases, then the film industry will also be one of the best.

"Punjabi itni famous zabaan nahi hai", how much more ignorant are we going to become? Punjabi is spoken by 120 million people in the world and is the 10th most commonly spoken language in the world. It is a really old language, and if I remember it is older than Hindi, and for sure Urdu which is fairly recent.

Unfortunately, Punjabi language had the same fate in Indian Punjab. After independence, States were organized on the basis of languages. However, Marathi and Punjabi were not recognized as one of the popular languages as others. Marathi was considered as sub language of Gujarati and Punjabi as sub language of Hindi. Marathi speakers called for agitation until it was accepted and Maharashtra State was created. Punjabi had another bad luck. Around partition of the country, many Punjabi speaking Hindus and Muslims betrayed their mother tongue Punjabi in favor of Hindi and Urdu on religious grounds. After partition only we Sikhs were left to fight for recognition and safeguard Punjabi. After 1965 war between India and Pakistan, Central Government reluctantly accepted Punjabi. Another blow was done to Punjab by reorganizing it in carving out Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Many of the Punjabi speaking districts were given to those States further creating wedges between residents of these new States. Maybe this was the reward of sacrifices Punjabis made for fighting for Independence or fear of further partition of the country. So sad.

Pakistan should keep Punjabi alive even writing it with Urdu or English alphabets. Turks had changed their letters from Arabic to English.

He is talking about the dominant language in arts. How many Punjabi films are known globally as of now? I can't think of a single one. Also, how much vocabulary has been added to the Punjabi language, or how many books written in Punjabi do people read? The fact is that Urdu and Punjabi are both in decline when it comes to their representation in arts/cultural events, the latter being in a steeper decline. Moreover, that man never said there are more Urdu speakers than Punjabis globally. Please don't look at things out of context.

    • @oky834

@@tahatariq2424We have a global music industry, and most Indian music is known through Punjabi music.
Bhangra dance is well known and one of the most famous in the Indian Subcontinent.
There is no match for the poetry of Bulleh Shah.
Haven’t you heard of Heer-Ranja? There are many more, but Heer-ranjha is one of the most famous.
Most of the topics of Bollywood are related to Punjab. And Punjabis have dominated Bollywood for quite a long time. If there were more Punjabi speakers in Punjab(India), the movies would have been popular, but now the audience is limited to Punjab, so they go directly to Bollywood.
Only if the partition hadn’t happened, there would have been more history, but due to the migration of Punjabis, they have not only lost their heritage but also their money.
And there are so many more things that Punjabis have achieved worldwide, but you chose to be ignorant.

Language develops when people connect with the land and then culture grows.
I like the comment that Nain Sukh Sb made” people are living in Punjab but thinking that they are Afghans, Greeks, Persians etc” they are living in Punjab but have not connected to the land they live in? This is like I am living in a rented house- why would I try to improve or develop a connection- we are just living in Punjab but our identities are ( correct or incorrect) are Afghan, Persian , Greek etc) even after 8-10 generations.
Today what I see we connect ourselves more to Arabs than the place our families live in.
Pakistans society is in a state of MASS Confusion!
Any ways- please suggest 2-3 current books in Punjabi language- poetry, novel, non fiction- that should be current and be a must Read for Punjabis.

Is Urdu that far evolved than Punjabi? Who speaks Urdu? Pakistanis (mainly muhajirs and Johnny come lately Punjabis) and Indians the latter because it grew due to the happy confluence of Hindi and Persian not Arabic. If any one who got it to Pakistan it was the mujahir, since they wanted a Pakistan not Punjabis. So despite hating India Pakistan took an Indian language for a national language, that's why if anyone who could lay a claim to it are the mujahirs or Indians of UP. If you really want your children to progress get them to learn English (of course in addition to the language of their forefathers as it's their identity); no one bothers about Urdu outside the subcontinent. Not to say that Urdu is bad, in fact it can give a run to french as a language of love if not beat it outright. As for Punjabi it's one of the earthy languages of the subcontinent, while it can be brutally crass but it can also be elevated to a language of love and laughter (fun), it's slang can put cockney slang to shame, it can even make morose thing a happy thing. It has the subtle feel as that of petrichor and an amazing cadence no wonder Bollywood is enamoured and it resounds on dance floors across continents.

It actually needs your love and attachment for that language as i we can see for example Tamilian attachment with Tamil. As i knew from my Tamilian colleagues (this actually, i am not sure) Tamilian whether Muslim, Hindu, Christian anyone read their religious books in Tamil script. They have transformed all religious books in their Tamil script. Their Love and attachment for Tamil language, i deeply respect. Same i expect from Punjabi speakers that kindly dont connect Punjabi language with Sikh religion. This beautiful language was still there long long before the origin of Sikh religion. I wish better sense prevail among Punjabi people.
    🙏 🙏 🙏

Punjab gvt needs to take strick actions agains this Punjabi bashing, I remember as a kid in a school in Pakistan I wasn’t even allowed to speak Punjabi, once tgey told us to stop talking in Punjabi even with our parents at home , asked all the children the spy on their friends and if they catch them speaking in Punjabi at home that child would be punished.
I still know some of my old classmates who only talk in urdu now.
Not that this happened in centeral Punjab, in a very small town where 99% of the population is purely Punjabi

The root cause of murder of punjabi of our ancestors like Bulley Shah & Baba Farid is the venom of communalism of the last hundred years by Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims of Punjab.
My ancestors left 75% of sikh heritage in pakistan, hindus in indian punjab disowned their mother tongue and opted for sanskritized hindi.
Punjabi musilman who was major part, the backbone of punjabiyat, opted for urdu even though they were the ruling class.
I accept that urdu was imposed by the ruling british for their own vested interests, but what stopped the rulers from Ayub to Zia to Niwaz not to start Punjabi.
We in indian punjab had to sacrifice many parts of punjab to Himachal, Haryana etc because of the communal punjabi hindu.
Ofcourse there was pressure by respective central govts to impose urdu and hindi, but the so called brave punjabis succumbed to these pressures..

Urdu was court language of mughal period. After british came they were writing in roman english. So we can say that urdu is arabic script with local dialect having hindi, punjabi , farsi n arabic words mixed. Later on we learnt english which become language of elite class. We spk english pruodly to show our class, literate class. It is facts that all medical n engineering books r in english. Learn as many as language as u can to widen ur horizen/ understanding. In south India u can't manage without english. Every language has its own advantage. Bhule shah nu punjabi de bager samajana possible hai ki? Let us ponder over this. Urdu language didn’t exist when Mughals ruled, Persian was the court language. Urdu is a pidgin language: Hindi mixed with Arabic, Turkish and Persian words. Hindi and Urdu grammar is identical. Urdu is an artificial language, there is no high literature in Urdu. There are no medical, engineering books etc.
