I’m in zone 8b. Grew my first raised bed dahlias from seed in full sun. My set up is morning sun, mid day full sun, then evening semi shade. I started the seeds in trays, planted them out in my raised bed. Only problem I had was powdery mildew in late season. The dahlias grew from 5 to 8 foot tall. Big beautiful blooms in all colors. These weren’t fussy plants, they just grew and bloomed beautifully. I’m planting even more this year! Easiest garden plant I’ve ever grow. The seed dahlias outperformed the tuber dahlias
That’s awesome that yours did so well!
❤ When did you start them?
I’ve had issues with dahlias as well. Last year I grow them from seed and it was amazing. I didn’t use any heat. It was so fun seeing them open. Beyond easy and rewarding. I’m going to be doing a bunch more this year. I can’t wait to see how yours turn out.
Good to know! I can’t wait to see how they do!
Great info!!! I’m so obsessed with starting dahlias from seed! I got a beautiful plant last year from some seeds I got in a seed swap 💕🌸
That is awesome! I love surprise seeds!
Never tried from seed but I have had great success with tubers here in New Hampshire. And i would love a last frost date in March. Mine is potentially May 5th
Yes I’m very lucky with such an early last frost date.
I started dahlias from seeds last year, and it was so much fun to see all the colors and shapes! Also, our pollinators went CRAZY over them. I saved seeds, and I'll be starting them soon. (I have plenty of time before my last frost date, unfortunately!)
Yay! I can’t wait!
You’ve inspired me to try dahlias again. Grew from seed years ago when I didn’t really know what I was doing lol but was able to grow a few. Am going to try pots instead of the ground for all the reasons you mentioned (am in Mesquite). Love having another gardener in the metroplex to follow!
Go for it! I’m in Wylie so not far from you!
I’m so sad that you are having a hard time with dahlias they are so beautiful!! I went a little crazy and got 15 tubers for my upcoming season in zone 5b
Awesome! I hope you enjoy your new varieties!
Just a thought - it may be a good “scientific experiment “ to try grow bags and some in plastic pots, to see if there is a difference?
Great idea!
If you think that 75F room temperature is "hot"...then what will you say about the +90F constantly for weeks.
That would definitely purely be hot if you are not used to it.
I have had such good luck with dahlias in those black cloth grow bags. Tried a few in-ground last year and they didn't do nearly as well. Can't wait to see if you have better luck with them!!!
Yay! That makes me so excited, thanks!
This was perfect timing! I just got my Dahlia order from Floret Flower Farm (the new and greatest seeds) so this was very helpful. I sowed the seeds 3 days ago and no sign of seedlings, but I'm told they take a while. I also planted coleus; and they're taking forever. I'm told not to plant seeds too early because the plants actually want to be outside. Oh well, guess I'll see what happens and learn from it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Hope you love your Floret seeds!
I have three dahlia tubers coming to me at the end of the month, but I went ahead and sowed a few dahlia pompon seeds indoors a few days ago. For funsies, because this is my first growing season and I'm a newbie at gardening. I'm in zone 8b and I'm probably going into this too early, but I just wanted to see if I could do it. The seeds just germinated, and I'm like "now what?". I sowed four in one shallow yogurt cup.
I have tons of Seedling Update & Maintenance videos where I focus on the What Now! Here’s the general one that covers a lot of basic info but there is another one that I deal with the dahlia seedlings … ua-cam.com/video/JQccApzsSSs/v-deo.htmlsi=zA3vgqQOt5yHIjI0
im in zone 7b, and have been growing them for over 20 years. I've lost 4 total, I never dig mine up. You may want to do raised bed with more sand. I will be starting some seeds i tried to cross pollenate, to see what comes out.
Thanks!
I saw a video that said Dahlias were sensitive about being transplanted, so it's best to plant them in Peat Pots so you can just move them into the garden or pot without disturbing their roots. Have you found that to be true in your experience?
I have not, but each gardeners experience is different. I have a seedling update comment out this week on Tuesday and it includes my dahlias from seed that have already been through one transplant … they look amazing!
The biggest problem with Dahlias not blooming is that they don't want a lot of nitrogen. I feed my dahlias with bulb food after an initial growth period of feeding them with a balanced fertilizer.
Good to know!
Great video, thanks for all the information about growing dahlias from seed. Good luck I hope this works for you. I know you have devoted a lot of time and money on dahlia tubers. You are going to have lots of success with this project.
Fingers crossed!
Thrilled you shared this. I’m trying seed dahlias for the first time this year as well. We’ll figure out how they work together 🙂
Definitely! Keep us updated!
Love your t-shirts! Will try dahlias from seed this year. Thank you for all your advice.
ps you have lovely handwriting
Thank you so much!
I need to start my dahlia again too.mine almost wipeout
Ugh, hope you get some awesome new varieties!
Just wanted to say how much I like your new intro.
Yay, thank you!
I am zone 8b as well but dahlias do really well here (Portland, OR). We have been getting very hot summers as well. It must be the humidity difference. We are also being hit w arctic blast, it’s been below 20 so I think this may be the year my dahlias don’t return. We’ll see! Good luck w your dahlias!
Hope your makes it through the arctic blast!
Congratulations on choosing dahlias from seed. I hope it goes as good for you as it did for me.
I, too, am a little like you in "only the strong survive, or get my attention!" That means in my zone 7, Maryland, I don't dig them. Each year about the beginning of May, most have come back but....this year has been pretty wet so I'm concerned I'm going to lose some tubers and some of my seeded dahlias.
But in concert with your thinking, I'm just going to sow more than I need and if I have to give some away, who wouldn't love that! Also I did grab some seeds from my seeded dahlias and I'm curious to see what they look like!
I'm jealous of how much you've been able to start but Feb will be here sooner than I think!!
February is almost here!
Your video came out just in time. I just pulled out some Dahlia seeds last night to sow inside for the first time. I've had them since last year so fingers cross they still good. I'm definitely him to follow along with you. I see your video was a month ago so hopefully it's not too late. According to the Almanac my last spring frost date is March 30th.
But I'm in no rush.
I'm in 8b Va.
Wonderful! And you still have plenty of time!
I live in zone 8ish/9 in South America, I've also struggled with dahlias, they always rot when I planted straight in the soil (I have sandy soil and in a hill area), last Spring I tried planting a bulb in one of those plastic air pruning root pots, I put the pot in my garden bed, surrounding it by gladioli and only one drip on the side of the pot (at garden bed soil level) so the soil wicks what it needs... and I finally got beautiful flowers! I don't know if the plant is going to get as tall as it would be if it were in the ground but who knows, maybe a root will find its way down the draining holes, so far, it's the middle of summer and the Dahlia is bushy and full of flowers!
That is amazing!
For the first time last year I tried dahlias and it was the unwins mix. It was a ferry Morse seed packet (from lowes) and I had good success from it. They were a shorter variety and mostly single blooms (not what most people want or expect from dahlias), however they were beautiful and I was able to store the tubers from those plants. I think it’s cool that I now have my own tubers from a 1.80 seed packet. Excited to see how they do this year!
So many awesome plants for such a small price!
I think the grow bags are a great idea so you can move them around. This year I planted 3 dahlias in pots and brought them into the basement for the winter. For the first time, it looks like the tubers will be OK. In the past when I tried digging tubers, they got moldy and rotted. I also left 2 dahlias in the ground (zone 5) and covered them with extra soil and some hay. We'll see if they survive.
That's a great idea! I hope yours make it!
I’ve only had one dahlia. A friend grew some from seeds. It grew really well until it got really hot and then it died. I don’t know if it was the heat, too much or not enough sun or too much water. I didn’t really know how to take care of it. Not sure I would try them after that experience so I’ll just have to enjoy yours! 😁
Yeah, I feel like they are pretty high maintenance.
New subscriber here, love your personality and fun to watch you! When can I hear about your garden journal? I need one like that! Thx
Thanks for subbing! My journal is a Happy Planner that I have modified to fit my needs, but several have asked so I’ll try to do a video in the next week or so!
I’ve also had bad luck with dahlias I placed them in pots in the winter and grow them inside once my last frost date passes I plant them outside they do good for a while however once it heats up in the summer they stop flowering. I heard they don’t do well in temperatures higher than 80 degrees 😢
Good to know! Maybe I can bring mine in during the winter 🤔
Isn't it funny how grow lights seem to keep "growing" each year! I have a few seed trays started and I'm already thinking I need more lights! 😅
Yep 😂😂😂
I grew dahlias from seed last year for the 1st time but the stems were very weak & flopped over. I asked a dahlia group on FB about it & they said it happens pretty regularly with seed grown dalias.
Ooo, good to know … I’ll need to make sure they have proper support!
Hello garden neighbor (fort worth here), I’ve never had good luck with the dahlias from big box store too, last year I bought some Collarette and Anemone Dahlia Seeds to plant this year, and I was going to wait until the last frost date to start them but thankfully I was u vid and I’m gonna start them now , so I can get some blooms before the hot summer get here :) 💚
Awesome! I hope they do great for you!
Just love this. Last week I seeded a couple of varieties similar to yours after you posted your seeding video. And now tonight I am going to seed my dahlia seeds. You are me helping stay on schedule. 😊 thank you. Looking forward to seeing your coleus propagations, cause I also did a bunch of them a couple of months ago. “Grow with me” sessions are great!
Wonderful! I’m so glad you can follow along and seed with me!
I love Enchanted Dreamer aka SeedCult. I’m going to be growing her Dahlias this year as well!
Yes! Added that to my list … a couple of people have recommended that company!
I tried this one year. They did produce flowers. I will get these going again soon. I enjoy the shelves behind you that I watched you put up some time ago. They are functioning well. Great vlog.
Glad you like them!
what state are you from?

Thanks!
I suspect I am close to you, in Royse City, since you talk about Farmersville. I have had horrible experiences growing dahlias from tubers. I have direct sown from seed with better success. I am going to start some inside after watching your video. Thank you for the information!
I’m in Wylie, so right by you!
My husband flies with a paramotor club that launches from Farmersville. I am going to stop by and check out the nursery you suggest next time he goes to fly.@@shesamadgardener
Perfect time of this video! I started dahlia from seeds last week (first time ever). I can’t wait to watch entire video!
Hope you enjoy it!
Found some dahlia pompom mix seeds today at Walmart and sowed it right when I get home. I hope I’ll get a good germination.90% of my flowers in my small garden are from seeds.😊
That’s amazing on your percentage of blooms from seed in your garden!
@@shesamadgardener I’m amazed too! Seedlings at the nursery is just too expensive for me,I only bought them when they’re on clearance sale 😊
I threw some dahlia seeds in the garden last year and they were pretty. Now after watching this I am going to start from seed!
Awesome!
I found dahlias were easy to grow from seed. Good luck!
Cool, thanks!
Great explanation on stating dahlias. Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!
I just seeded my dahlia seeds. This will be the third year I use seeds rather than, tubers and I loved them! They even produced small tubers.
Wonderful! I hope mine turn out too!
Not only they grow tubers but u should see those tubers on the second year. So many flowers!
