- I'm trying a new staking method this year, creating a grid to support my dahlias. I have a pretty low fuss method for planting my dahlia tubers. I prefer to not pot them up in advance. This saves me on potting mix, time, and effort to water and care for them. I choose to just plant them directly in ground once the weather warms up here in my zone 6b garden. Hey Steph, I’ve grown my dahlias in large and medium pots and so that they don’t flop over I start them in the very bottom of the pots, adding soil every few days as they grow until they have reached the top. Then I let them go and of course I pinch them so that they will branch off. It’s been working great. Even my Café au Lait don’t topple over or break off.

I planted 6 clumps today that I purchased from a big blue box store awhile back I think in March or early April. Some of them were mushy, some looked wrinkly and some looked great. I threw the mushy ones away but planted everything else. Wish me luck, I’ve never grown dahlias before. Crossing my fingers 🤞🏼 that I get a bloom or two! Thanks for sharing steph. For any beginner gardener who wants to try dahlias in their garden but get intimidated by the staking or storing method, I would suggest them to try dahlia seeds which comes in small sizes too.

I love, love Dahlias however I have a small back garden as well as a medium size front/side garden so planting these beauties is a no due to no room. Hi Jeanine! Your very welcome. They certainly can be treated as an annual if you didn't want to lift and store them. Yes, I have a hard time remembering to fertilize so I came up with that to help me remember. Hope it helps you as well!

I couldn’t plant all alliums last fall and stored with glads in peat moss and some rotted. You would not have to normally store those, but I agree a paper bag would be great.. we use to store canna bulbs in large cardboard tubes and they kept well. I hope I can make a root cellar this year.

i potted mine 2 months ago in the shed to get them ahead and will be the first year i save the tubers. One of mine did make it in the ground am so excited over the possibility of not having to store them if i can.

Is there an update video showing how well it worked? I'm in my second yr. of growing them, I over wintered but only one made it. But it was the one I liked the best so it's ok. I bought more!!! They are in pots waiting for warmer weather to be put out.

I didn't realize you had to water the tubers 1x/week after just planting the tubers...whoops. I've been watering every day 😅. I'm going to back off on the watering and see if I can get some growth coming up from the soil before hitting them with water on a daily basis. Thank you for the tips!

Just finished planting dahlias getting away from individual staking. Tried netting with 6" squares not the best solution could not get it tight enough. I'll try your weaving methods that looks like it will work great. Thanks
Great tips on storage and switching up the fertilizers depending on the stage the plant is in. I am also tight on space so will try placing them closer like you did. Curious why you decided to not divide up the tubers? I haven’t had to do that yet as this is my first season. But hopefully next year!

I live in a subalpine area in Australia with winter temps down to -7c (20 fahrenheit). At my local golf course, there are several dahlias that are pretty much ignored - the tubers can be poking out from the soil. They all survive and are shooting away now (it's spring here) I didn't dig up mine either this year but did cover them with a little heap of compost. Unless you REALLY want to dig them up, you'd probably be fine to leave them. The one year I did dig them up, I lost heaps and many of them were injured and performed really poorly.😅

Hi Mercedes, Thank you so much. Glad to help. The black you see in the background, is actually heavy duty landscape fabric, the stuff they use on greenhouse floors. The reason for it is that the areas around my vegetable garden was very rough land. Lots of briar (so thorny!), pokeweed, etc. We couldn't ever get ahead of it, and it engulfed my space my mid summer. We started slowly working on laying down this fabric over the course of a couple of years to supress weeds. Its working well so far. I would love to cover it up with wood chips or gravel as i'm not keen on the black look of it, but it would be incredibly expensive as its a fairly large area. So I just try to look at it as its keeping the area tidy and helping tremendously with the weeds.
That True Organic bone meal has an NPK of 7-7-0, & looks more pelleted than pulverized. I wonder how higher nitrogen bone meals like that (7-7-0, 6-9-0, 6-8-0, 6-12-0) etc do compared to the ones with low N (1-4) & P in the 12-25 range. Please update us on your dahlias once they're in full flower. Thanks!
Hi Steph, Bone meal probably is a good amendment for YOUR soil because your dahlias are enclosed in a fenced area, but bone meal is very very attractive to animals from raccoons to coyotes and even domestic pets and they'll dig up the soil and plants to get at the bone meal which they can smell from quite a distance.

Hi, Steph. A question for you. I've seen others recommend no water when planting Dahlias. I just planted my Dahlias too, with no water. Should I go ahead and water them in? I'm in Zone 6B, New England. Thank you. PS--Isn't mother nature amazing? Dahlias are so pretty!
Hello…a year later with a question. When you fertilize with the fish and morbloom how much approx when mixed with water do you give each plant…eg a gallon, 1/2 gallon or more? Great video. I have not found a method that works for me over wintering 😢

Hi Calvin! Yes, please use it, I think it's a great way to try and coral the growing plants. I may try something similar with my tomatoes. The birch is doing great, thankfully. We had so much rain in Houston that my dahlia all does.
I think we all have the best labeling intentions lol!! I got a p touch printer, metal labels and plastic labels and still cant get it right.
Its so hard to get into a good habit with labeling for some reason lol

Question. Did you spritz the tubers throughout the winter while in the bags? I had zero luck with pine shavings this year so will try this bag method next time!!
Hi Rebekah, I did spray them when I had them in shredded newspaper and pine shavings, vermiculite. But I never sprayed or misted them in the paper grocery bags. I just left them rolled up in these bags tucked into this tote, and didn't even have a cover for the tote since it broke. I kept the tote in my unheated garage which stood about 45-55 degrees from late October to mid May while they were stored.

Hi there, I never misted them. When I dug them up, I shook as much soil as I could off. Let them dry over night, then put them in the paper bags in this tote. That was it. They were in my unheated garage that stood about 45-55 degrees during the time they were in there, from late October through May.

Hi There! This bed is 2 feet deep. I would say that a bed this size would work great for ranunculus. If your asking if you can plant ranunculus with dahlias, they bloom at different times, ranunculus earlier, and then dahlias later. I think that would work fine for succession planting.

Individual plants? Or maybe 3 per group.?? I thought Laura did. Not sure but she alwsys said every year i get more tubers. Could that effect yourr growth?? Just mentioning it. I am no expert.
Hi Sonya, The clumps of tubers could be divided into multiple tubers. There are videos that help show how that is done. The smaller the clump the smaller the dahlia plant. I kept mine intact as I don't have a ton of dahlia growing space. You get more tubers each year by either buying more, or splitting the ones you have. They can grow quite large by the end of the season. They sort of look like clump of potatoes.
It is going to be an extremely cold night tonight, how do you protect them in the ground?
Unfortunately, I'm not able to do anything. My soil feels warm. So I'm hoping it's enough to keep the tubers insulated for the couple hours when the temps drop. I'll also 🤞 and hope for the best. The weather had been so unseasonably warm, and just when we think we're in the clear, mother nature comes along to show us who's boss.
I saw something once that said to check your soil temperature before planting spring bulbs. I bought a thermometer that looks like it's for a Thanksgiving turkey, but with a long stem on it. Once the soil is 60 degrees, it's okay to plant. I think there is some judgement too, that if a freak snowstorm is expected in a day, to go ahead and wait. Rule of thumb is it's better to wait a little longer than to be too early and risk the tubers not doing well.
What was your spacing between your two rows
I spaced my dahlias much closer than is suggested. They are about 8" apart. The suggested spacing is closer to 12-18" apart.
We have to deal with slugs and is killing all the (only)Dahlia plants in our garden which were super healthy,tried all methods,salt,pesticides etc,but its keep coming back and killing the whole plant.Any suggestions?

Hi Nima, no its an annual that in some gardening zones might act as a perennial if they are able to leave them in ground over winter. Here in my gardening zone, we can not. They would rot in the cold wet winters. We have to lift and store the tubers for winter and then replant each spring once the danger of frost has passed.
