Love in the remake when you piece together clues relating to the side quest and environmental story telling, it is implied the merchant is part of a noble family that sided with the Salazar family to fight the cults and sealed the parasite away. Everything Leon and Ada do with the merchant has been part of a plan to weaken and destroy the cult. It is implied he might be the last survivor of his clan.
@@mohdadeeb1829destroying blue medallions (charms), crushing tombstones of the twins (for joining the cult), defamating Ramon himself with an egg, eliminating strong threats, they're all about the cult.
In my head canon I would like to believe that the Merchant was basically visiting the place frequently before the outbreak and once he saw the outbreak he was about to get out of dodge but he saw Ada & Leon and went "Now there is some great potential to make some quick money"
im BEGGING you to do a facts video on Hunnigan, she's my favorite character in the entire series and in my opinion criminally underrated for the amount of screentime she gets
I liked that the merchant now refers to himself as "us" or says things like "me and the lads" several times. It kind of implies there are more of them or an organization of sorts. Also, the requests kind of imply as well that they do dislike the cult so they are not that neutral as one may think.
The gold armor request directly confirms that it has killed a few of his friends so he was around with some hunters that tried to take it down while probably raiding the castle
2:17 Everyone always says the Merchant is “permanently gone” if you kill him in professional. I’ve played RE4 on every port except Xbox and have killed him on professional 1000s of times and the next merchant is always there. The only time you kill the merchant and he doesn’t show up at the next merchant spot is if you kill him before the cabin he will not be outside the two paths gates
It's just something people made up over the years. Just like how people have said Wesker's silencer on his handgun gives it 5x crit rate. No, the gun is just fully upgraded and the silencer does nothing.
In Number 17-18 [2:13] In the remake, I think "The Blue Flame Torch" prevents him from harming Merchant. The same trick happens when Ashley lights a blue lantern at the Infected Knight Armor to stop them. Because both Leon and Knight Armor got Parasite Infected. Like Susi mentioned at number 10 [5:07] That is a new good detail to add to this game.
I would like to point out that while the RE4 Merchant did make that phrase popular, he was not the first merchant to say it. The first merchant to say the phrase "What are ya buying" was alucard's Butler in Castlevania symphony of the night
I still subscribe to the theory that there isn't just one Merchant, but it's multiple guys all dressed the same. Of course, the other possibility for how the Merchant always gets somewhere before you is that he's from the area and knows his way around. That, and he's strapped with enough firepower to go wherever the hell he wants.
I always just thought that the Merchant just wore colored contact lenses to trick the ganados. If you use the PRL 412, he can't be hit with it, despite it targeting literally everything infected with Las Plagas, and destructible props.
Funny you should mention Dagon. I just saw that movie recently and yeah you do get a resident evil 4 feel to it also " why couldn't she be the other kind of mermaid with the fish part on top and the lady part on the bottom". When I saw that bedroom scene that's the first thing that came to mind lol.
Great video as always. I would just say however Suzi at 5:07 when you mention about the lanterns Merchy has. This is something that's been talked about before up to 7 months ago already. I cant link the examples I gave from Sub-Reddits here as I assume my initial comment was deleted due to the links. However I dont think you can take credit for that one. Just thought I should mention that since you asked us to thank you for something I believe the community were already discussing/aware of.
Back then I was this 🤏🏻 close to dress up as Leon (as I'm also dark blonde), whole my then gf would do her part as Ashley. A guy I used to know went to every single convention in town as the merchant (or in Spanish, "el buhonero", which is NOT an usual word). The idea was for me to try to buy condoms from him and he saying his line " NO LUCK, STRANGER!", so I would do the defeated animation. 😅😅
In the remake near the end he says something about himself and his "associates" being grateful. Did capcom confirm that the merchant is more than one person and if yes, what are they? Clones? Infected? An entire faction?
yeah in the remake the expand a bit on the merchant. Seems there are a lof of them and they take special jobs too since well they tell Leon that they will pay him when he completees them.
I didn't think anything of the merchant's setup while my boyfriend and I were playing the game, but when I later watched Carcinogen do a playthrough, I had the same thought about the blue flame. I can't think of any other reason why they wouldn't make it purple as well instead of blue except that it deters las plagas. Of course, that raises the question: if he is also infected, why doesn't the flame bother him? Maybe that's why he's wearing a hood and mask, as a sort of shield for himself while the blue flame is keeping other enemies at a distance. Realistically, it's probably just a re-used asset to save time in design, but it's fun to come up with theories.
Fun fact: The color purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic.
The Merchant is one the best characters in Resident Evil history. His cockney British accent to his collection of things on sale. They’ll be no one who’s gonna top him at a high price.
Always great to see collaborations with Sphere Hunter and Ink Ribbon! Hope she'll cover the Outbreak series retrospectives and we'll get a fact list on Jack Krauser one day.
I have a theory on the identity of the Merchant...I made a video on it, but will sum it up here. I think Ada hired him to help aid Leon - not only does this help keep her boy toy safe, but it helps her in using Leon to complee her mission. In return, the Merchant earns money and a whole village himself - this explains him setting up shops that are permenant such as the shooting range, but it also explains why he has side quests that are oriented around cleaning up the place (rats, medallions, enemies, etc.). Ada's intel on the place could of been shared with the Merchant, thus explaining how he knows the area so well. Lastly...just listen to the way he talks to Ada in Sepeeate Ways. He acts like he knows her. Great video though man! Can't wait to see more.
One I never hear anyone mention is that the Merchant is originally referred to as The Weapons Dealer in the PS2 game manual. I'm not sure if he's called the same in the Gamecube version's manual, but I would assume at some point Merchant just became the popular name to call him in the community. Though I do wonder where it started 🤔

Here's additional information: The merchant in the trial version of re4 original was making a discount The option appears when you do not have enough money to purchase an item I made a video about it on my channel

The merchant sounded excited at the end of separate ways in the remake that Las iluminatios would be eradicated. He said he was "briming with excitement, your actually going to do it, stranger!" It sounded like his goal was to help any 3rd party in their fight against the plaga. He also mentions in the request to kill the golden knight that the golden knight took out their best, implying he had/has a team. He also wants you to do things like kill rats, shoot medallions, kill strong threats, do things to disgrace the enemy, etc. Makes me think that he was planning on claiming all the estate that Los illuminatios owned, but that's speculation. His real goal could have been righteous, or greedy, or both. The mystery surrounding him what makes him interesting and loved, besides his personality.
