  • To Queen Victoria, marriages were about strategic alliances.
Correction: At 5:38, the map of post-war Germany is missing eastern Prussia. The borders of Austria-Hungary should also include portions of northern Serbia and southern Poland.

Over the course of her 63-year reign, Queen Victoria strategically planned marriages to place her descendants in royal families all over Europe. In doing so, she created one of the most remarkable royal families in history.
By the early 19th century, Europe had been at war for decades. After the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars killed millions, European leaders came together to restore peace by reshaping major states for a new balance of power. Great Britain went on to become one of the strongest states. And years later, Queen Victoria and her husband Albert came up with a plan to maintain that political power - they married their children to monarchs across Europe. By the 1880s Queen Victoria’s children were in several important branches of Europe’s monarchies.
The royal unions didn't play out as Queen Victoria planned, but she continued to make more matches anyway. She had 42 grandchildren, and these 7 ended up on royal thrones. Her grandchildren would end up on the thrones of Britain, Russia, Germany, Romania, Norway, and Spain leading up to the most destructive war Europe had ever seen.
To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Video journalist Sam Ellis uses maps to tell these stories and chart their effects on foreign policy.

No one said they were. But Queen Victoria's goal was to marry off all of the children and grandchildren into Europe in the hopes that it would remain unified. How is she to know that her grandkids would go fight one another?

The European royals of the 18th and 19th centuries had respect for one another, just no respect for the people they ruled over. The king of one country may declare war on the country ruled by his cousin, but it was understood that neither king would actually come to harm, and war was seen as just sporting playful competition between the interwoven branches of royal houses. The idea of caring about the sufferings of the lower classes who made up the cannon fodder infantry was only a nascent concept among the aristocracy and royalty of those times.

Alfonso blamed Victoria Eugenie for bringing the disease in to the family, but it didn't really cause the downfall of the Spanish monarchy the way that it did for Russia, especially since the king and queen had two other surviving sons (although their second son, Jaime, was deaf) and two daughters who also could have inherited. They all share an agricultural background steeped in cheeses, butter, hams, sausages, wine and/or beer, pickled foods, bread, and animal husbandry and fishing because they are essentially the same peoples reusing their techniques over different geographic areas with slight differences. These are found all over the world individually, but in all these European countries you find all of them together.

When I was in Russia, I visited the Norwegian embassy, where they keep a letter from the last Russian tsar adressed to the first (independent) Norwegian king, written sometime before the 1st world war. The Russian tsar refers to him as a cousin (I'm not sure if they literally were cousins, but I believe they were related), and expresses great concern for him since he's become the monarch of such a small and poor nation and the royal facilities are so limited (palace, etc.). All of this was in English - the language they both knew, and they seemed to refer to each other with Anglicized names.
A few years later, the Russian tsar was dead, and the Russian Empire was gone. The Norwegian royal family is still here. That letter is really interesting in hindsight.

Their respective children among many were, King Haakon VII (born Prince Carl of Denmark) of Norway, Queen Maud of Norway and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Hence Tsar Nicholas was referring to Maud's husband, The King of Norway, Haakon VII, as cousin. Maud was his cousin too.

Olenna Tyrell on the other hand was mainly focused on damage control as her son, the Lord of Highgarden, blindly married her grand daughter off to a monster like Joffrey. And Petyr Baliesh constantly kept ruining peace in order to further his own assention up the political ladder.

Pop culture reference isn't great. She mightn't be a great ruler but Daenerys always tries to put her subjects first. Victoria and those ruling England at the time literally cause famines which killed millions in Ireland and India. When the Ottoman Sultan tried to send aid to Ireland, Queen Victoria stopped him because he was sending more than she had. (although he did sneak 3 ships into Waterford regardless). Not being Indian, I'm not as familiar with what England did to India but what I have learned about that is that they faired no better. Victoria and the British Empire are absolutely disgusting.

This was done around the same time as Victoria's children were married off to different monarchys, Since their children married eachother.

The conclusions this video draws are faulty at best, the Great War happened *in spite* of royal familial ties. The three cousins that ruled Great Britain, Germany and Russia didn't want war and did everything in their power to prevent it.
Really disappointing that you are either basing this on bad research or knowingly draw the wrong conclusions.

But Wilhelm II and Franz Joseph did want war, at all cost.

What are you talking about. Germany was planning for war *at least* by 1912 but really their actions since unification in 1871 pretty much have been aggrevating tension to cause war. The familial connection was there but I believe nationalism and glory was thicker than blood. I mean German involvement in the Boer war agaisnt the British, the naval race, the balkans crisis, the morrocan involvement and fianlly the Austrian-Hungarian ultimatum. If you look at all these events which raised the stakes and forced other countries into alliances and building great military machines, you will see the common denominator as Germany. tbf (kinda) Germany's geographical position forces it to have to subdue its neighbours to the West, France, and the East, Russia, But it appears you are the person drawing bad conclusions

the other interesting part is that the dynasties that were deposed in Austria and Germany after the war didn't necessarily end with that moment, with the families still holding various "official" titles and being public figures of a sorts. Nothing like the British monarchy but the descendants of Kaiser Wilhelm etc are still alive and hold somewhat ceremonial powers and garner a great deal of respect within the semi-political sphere of Europe ^.^

      1. Compared to others like Spain or Japan it isn’t that old, let’s consider that although they do have quite ancient ancestry, there’s a very clear split between the Plantagenets and the previous, Anglo-Saxon rulers instead of a natural succession as happened along certain lines in the other, more ancient monarchies
      2. They’re really popular in the last century or so just because of what was explained in the video. Historically I’d dare say they’ve been one of the least popular monarchies, sure every monarchy has had to face usurpation plots and popular revolts and so on, but to the date the only monarchy that had faced two successful revolts against them that had the objective of reducing their powers or directly getting rid of them, in times where neither republics (or democracy for that matter) existed or still were a relevant political concept, nor concepts like communism or anarchism existed, has been the British monarchy, which would be the Magna Carta and the First Baron's War which reinstated it, and the English Civil War which ended with King Charles I executed, not to mention that later on his grandson King James II was overthrown over religious reasons.
