  • At Tewkesbury is the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon, it is like a motorway junction of rivers.
As with all town names it is derived from an earlier name. Theoc, a Saxon who founded a hermitage during the 7th century, gave the town the name of Theocsbury. Over time this has changed to Tewkesbury.
This is a town with a lot of history. On the 4th May 1741 took place the Battle of Tewkesbury, a decisive battle during the Wars of the Roses.
Tewkesbury Abbey dominates the skyline, which was founded in 1087. Located on the southern edge of the town with the River Swilgate nearby, running past the abbey and into the Mill Avon.
The town is a joy to explore with a feeling that little has changed since the middle ages. Hemmed in by rivers and the flood plain, Tewkesbury has a constant threat from flooding. The people are used to this and although the town has been cut-off on many occasions, town life continues.
Tewkesbury is well known for the numerous alleyways that lead off from the main streets of the town. Walk into them and see a different world, many with half timbered buildings, but not telling of life as it was, not that very long ago!
