I absolutely love Bill the Kid. Bass Reeves was very good and ended with its best episode. Butcher’s Crossing didn’t agree with me but I made it to the end. Definitely good with number 1. 1923 was great.
In Mexico we have a new series of the life of Pancho Villa, its not that bad, and have alot of action, pacho villa was a general and outlaw in 1910-1923
Joe Pickett was a brilliant modern western tv series. Season 2 came out this year, and sadly it is now cancelled but it was so damn good. The main character was just a very ordinary guy with a strong moral code. It was also refreshing to have him and his wife showing on screen what a strong marriage (& family) should look like rather than all the dysfunctional families we usually see portrayed by Hollywood.
While your more specific points are correct, the overall comment is just wrong. Been reading the books since the beginning (22 now and I’m going back to listen to the audio books, Hoopla from your local library is a terrific resource, and I’m almost current, now listening to Storm Watch, which I had to buy from Audible) and the truth is: the TV show is a crime against CJ Box and the books. The only people I know who enjoyed it haven’t read the books. Chopping up the stories, making Joe totally wish washy (amazingly, while weakening the strong Marybeth character), race-swapping Nate, portraying every third resident of Wyoming as black…it’s just unwatchable.

@@matthalpin1981Thank you for your reply. I admit I was gearing up to go toe to toe with you about the racial stuff but, with a good story, my point is there’s no need to pander. If the show had lasted long enough viewers would have seen Nate marry a black woman, imported from Louisiana, an astute businessman who ran the legal side of a bad guy from a previous book’s business dealings. Anyway, I have to wonder how much control the authors retain when they sell the rights to their work. George “RRRRRRR!” Martin retained too much and having to follow his demands for the first three seasons nearly killed Game Of Thrones (some of us who read the books knew how badly the quality sagged and can’t believe the show runners were able to save enough of the story to keep it going as long as they did). In this case, and the Cassie Dewell TV series, CJ Box obviously didn’t have enough pull to present a coherent story. Anyway…

Wickedly clever of you to label the breaks by number, not name. Tricked me in to watching the whole thing. Have to agree City Primeval was a letdown. I re-watched the entire original series - where the writing was so densely jam-packed, the actors sometimes step on each other's [good] lines. City Primeval, alas, was "modern" - stretching needlessly over too many episodes, and belabouring the obvious of some very shallow characters. Lawmen: Bass Reeves is the only other one I've seen - I'll take a pass on Scorsese anymore, thanks... until/unless insomnia strikes again... Cheers
I liked the Billy The Kis series and have hopes for Bass Reeves. (who was not an inspiration for the Lone Ranger character by the way, that's a misconception that's alas spreading )
1923 might be the best on the list but the story that captivates viewers is not set in the West. The Africa story line steals the show by far. It has Western-like qualities in an interesting setting and a love story done better than modern Rom-Coms but for me simply isn’t Western enough. While I like the modernization themes in the Yellowstone setting and the world building it does it, at least for me, is a secondary story until Spencer returns home. Maybe in season 2 it will be more of a true Western.
Nate was totally mis cast!! He is not described as musclebound at lol! Tough and wiry and hawklike!! I don’t care what color actor was cast….they could’ve read CJ Box’s descriptions of his characters! Horribly disappointed!!
Justified: City Primeval? Really? It’s Justified but without any of the heart or soul. Anyone in a Western hat, I guess. But, hey, it’s 2023 and they did manage to shoehorn the biracial couple into the heavily contrived story. Elmore Leonard would have been appalled.

The best western of every year past, present and future is Deadwood. It will never be beaten.
