my uncle works at a shop right behind the Santa Cruz guitar shop. I received a tour of the place and it is absolutely amazing. Just as a testimony to the quality of wood they use, the man showed us a nice slab of regular wood, I believe was mahogany. He gave it a knock with his hand and it sounded good and had a good solid sound to it. The guy then explained this was wood an average Fender, maybe Gibson would use in its guitars, nothing wrong with it just your standard quality wood. He proceeded to pull out a slab of this old railroad red wood. He gave it the same strong knock with his hand and I kid you not the thing rang like a church bell. That experience combined with playing a few of their guitars at a local shop has forever changed my view on acoustics, I have played my share of high end taylor and gibsons and nothing comes close.
I just commented on a different eddies video that the sound is all that matters, but this guitar has the looks to match the beauty of its sound! Breathtaking!
The richest sound I have ever heard; god guided this luthier to his perfect build. I am dumbfounded by this guitar. The best I have ever heard. Thanks for this Eddies gutars😘
If there was a God worth worshiping, then all guitars would be this good and all of us could play as well as Matt Chulka. The point is: While you are on Earth play the best guitar that you can and practice until you sound great playing it.
That guitar is miraculous and you're playing is absolutely equal to the quality of the guitar!! My only concern with guitars like this which are so expensive is that they may end up in the hands of a wealthy collector who isn't going to use it as an actual instrument but more as a trophy to display to others. Guitars like this belong in the hands of great musicians who will actually play them and share the beauty of the instrument and their talents with others!!
OMG... the sonic qualities of that guitar are outrageous! The tonal range is so complete with a beautiful projection and sustain throughout. The clarity and crispness of the fundamentals are further supported by the beautifully balanced overtone composition - and the depth and warmth is to die for - it is indeed a remarkable piece of luthier craftsmanship - a work of art. Lovely playing Matt - you certainly bring out the best in the guitars you so graciously share with us :)
If expensive guitars were only purchased by people who deserve to play them, the market for guitars would collapse. You are just a caretaker, someday it will end up in the hands of someone who will be inspired to greatness...
My tom doerr guitar im having built this summer is gonna have a tunnel 15 redwood top and not the tree mahogany i wish lol but nice set of african blackwood b/s thanks to this video :) thanks matt for the sweet demo and that is one sexy guitar beautiful sound and awesome playing as always
You play beautifully.... something for me to strive for. This guitar could not have been described and showcased better than what you created here... well done. I hope some day to own a piece of history like this guitar that I can grow old playing for my wife... my biggest fan!
There is no doubt a guitar like this would have good resonance and sustain. But one thing noticeable in the sound of this guitar is "warmth" of tone. You are such a phenomenal player. I've been playing probably nearly as long as you've been alive, but still don't hold a candle.
I played a Santa Cruz in 85 and will never forget it. When it was handed to me I had to grab firm: it wanted to fly away!! So light, bright, but strong and vibrant. It was a large guitar.
I bless the day that I found your channel. Your guitars are pure works of art. And they can craft masterpieces. One day I will buy a guitar from you. That day I will show you this comment. 😊😍

I ' m playing a Santa Cruz OM/PW now for 12 years and it' s my no.1 acoustic guitar. Had the pleasure to meet Richard Hoover in a Berlin guitar shop, great guy. He and Dana Bourgeois are the best luthiers today. And Goodall as well.
Work of art!! Check out the 40th anniversary Borgieous OM he does a video of. Never heard a guitar move me or look better than that one. This Santa Cruz is a runner up
WOW !! The Tree with Tunnel 13 top from scgc ❣❣ 😍💓 I was able to purchase a few years back a resale scgc OM in Brazilian RW and the Tunnel 13 top. Super duper rare ! and unfortunately the seller who let it go contacted me soon afterward in a bid to ask if I'd sell the instrument back. Like, NOT 😕 ; probably never ! 😎
Hey Matt! Good to see you! Hear you ! Wow! Buddy on my way to buy lotto tickets!!! Gotta have that beautiful guitar!!! Already have a beautiful guitar as you know..... That is just an incredibly sounding and beautiful guitar!!!
years ago my dad was at work and was asked to play for a charity benefit out of the blue. He declined because he didn’t have his guitar with him. One of the vps said that wasn’t a problem and offered his. Dad said it was one of the best guitars he ever played and asked the guy after about it, didn’t know what Santa cruz guitars were. Guy told him the price, which was many times more expensive than even these tunnel guitars. My dad handed it back and told him he wouldn’t have even touched it if he knew that. Haha ever since he told me that story I’ve lusted over these things. I’m a Martin fan boy but if I was rich enough to buy the Martins I want, I’d also be getting an om from Santa Cruz.
i own a lot of standard series martins. but my bourgeois slope shoulder D is unmatched in build quality. nothing comes close. shows the difference between line production and handmade.
You guys have some incredibly beautiful sounding guitars in your shop. If ever I won the lottery 😂😂😂😂 I'd fly right over from England to play and buy one of those incredible instruments
Wow Matt! This guitar is from somewhere up above? Did someone bring it back from a NDE? Thanks So Much for bringing its history and voice to all of us! Could one stop playing this instrument long enough to change strings? Love, Light, Peace, Music and more Sacred Guitars from above! DaveyJO in Pa.
I had no idea that redwood could work so well as a guitar top. I suspect that only old growth redwood that has been aged a looooong time will work. For those who don't know, redwood has a lot of resin in it, which is why it resists insects and weathering so well. But I suspect that newly cut, unaged redwood would have too much resin to work well as a sound board. Grain width is another important factor. Most of the Coast Redwood has a very wide grain.
Terrific sounding guitar. I"m sure was expertly made. It's always been odd for me to find that many of the "exotic tone woods" are "fund wood". Not harvested over a hundred years in an exclussive lot owned by master craftsmen of wood instruments from teh Italian alps. Though we do have the...no ones made a guitar using the Stradivari wood...yet it has been used obviously in making violens and some current high-end grand pianos. . :)
Wonderful story and description, Matt! Somehow, you remind me of an eloquent chef describing a luscious dessert! Except we can't sample a taste of a dessert online like we can with your beautiful playing!
Thank you for playing instrument-appropriate songs and doing so in a variety of tunings. Well played. Extraordinary instrument!
Imagine being able to let your hair and beard grow unheeded while playing transcendent music on the world's finest acoustic guitars. #lifegoals
This dude could make a $50 used Yamaha sound awesome. I bet I could get this to sound like a $50 used Yamaha though!
lol
Great reply
I find Matt's playing is beautifully unique to him but also has this distinctive American chill mode to it that we can all recognize and love.
😂
would have liked to see it strummed though. nice playing all the same. 🙂

Mabye one of the best sounding Guitars ever......
What a sound. I'd love to have one of these but the instrument deserves so much better.

Mahogany is by far my favourite sound and this example paired with the old Redwood is perfect, tastefully and respectfully played too.
The very first strum took my breath away 🤯. Magical tones.
That open D song has to be one of the most beautiful and catchiest pieces I've listened to in a loooong while
Magically guitar with a talented fingerstylist. Lethal combination
Legend says the last note is still sustaining.
I love watching this open d song evolve. Matt you playing is incredible. I really want you to release an album.
Agreed. Where can i get the album?

you have such a mellow and laid back style, great way to hear the tone of these high end guitars.

That guitar is magic.
What a piece of art! Matt, loved the new tune you played at the end! Hope it makes it on the debut album!
Wow it sounds beautiful
Love the woods, love the builder and love the OM. Wonderful Guitar!
Best guitar I've heard in a long time !
That is one fine instrument...and beard.
I keep coming back to this one. Can't get #5584 out of my head. Maybe if I win the lottery, I'll make the owner an offer he or she can't refuse...

Truly mind-numbing guitar and playing.
The Tree Mahogany is gorgeous . Love the guitar . Great Job Santa Cruz . How is Tony Rice?
Mellow sounds from venerable tone woods. Nice performance.
Beautiful guitar!
You must have an exceptionally strong neck to support a head with that much hair attached to it!
Matt is particular about fine, highly accurate tuning, as we all should be, and it shows. Particularly with this example.
My favorite sounding guitar to date. Matt, you make this piece of art sound so melodic and rich, are you self taught? Pretty inspiring man!
Magnificent!!!

Beautiful playing and beautiful guitar. Sounds like it was made for James Taylor. You should give him a call...
Thats not a guitar, that's a piano! Wooowww
I'm not worthy, but it's nice to glimpse, visually and sonically, Heaven. Sigh
A crusher for sure. Kings to you Matt!
Love the Santa Cruz lettering on the headstock. Rarely see that on these guitars
Amazing sound!
Wow...simply an incredible sounding guitar!
Very Very Nice Matt
Wow ..... what magic is that?
finally I am feellin a really acoustic SOUNDS.
This is one of the most beautiful guitar pieces I've ever heard! Does it have a name? Who is the artist? I beg you, I need to listen to it on repeat!
Well.. Does this song have a name now? :D Is it released somewhere?
I want it!!! Just save my allowance for 5 more years 😩. 🙋🏻♂️
save for 10 years
how much would this thing go for
Almost as much as a Bourgeois guitar. Which is equally as beautiful.
This is beautiful 🤩
Yup, thats a gem all right
Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼
Wow!!!! It booms. I want it!
Wow. I didn't believe any single guitar could have a "perfect" sound, but maybe I was wrong. Beautiful playing, too! Is that your piece?
I think the real question is where is the sheet music/ tabs for pieces he's just making sing on that guitar
Gorgeous guitar and playing Matt! I listened to this twice. Are the songs you play original compositions?
Bro that is some very tasty guitar playing. I have a feeling you could make a $100 guitar sound great!!
Goodness, the sound just leaped from even my cheap speakers. The guitar just wants to speak. Artfully played, but the guitar really brings it home.
Amazing sound. Wow.
Amazing tone, amazing beauty, amazing grace.
Wow. Beautiful.
So sweet and resonant !
Blown away indeed.....incredible. How do you ever put it down?
Nice playing.
Amazing sounding 💙💙💙

what a voice !!

One fine guitar, and played beautifully!!!! Just out of curiosity, is it strung with Santa Cruz strings?
All Santa Cruz guitars come with their strings on them.
Is it true the scale length varies from string 1 to string 6 since the saddle runs obliquely across the bridge, compensated or not?
Have you tried guitars with gmelina top? I think it does have almost similar tone property with that of a redwood.
Wonderful story and description, Matt! Somehow, you remind me of an eloquent chef describing a luscious dessert! Except we can't sample a taste of a dessert online like we can with your beautiful playing!
Holy wow
Great sound and excellent playing can you tell me the title of the first tune you picked
I'm lookin for a beach guitar!
this ain't it, lol.....
PERFECTION
Sounds good even on my I pad
Wow the way you explain guitars I would buy swamp land from you!!!
I laughed out loud at this! Thanks so much!
