  • Been a tradition for a long time with us to shoot a new gun on the 4th of July. It used to be a new
    cap gun when we were kids, but we ain't kids anymore, but still like to celebrate the 4th with shooting.

    The pistol looks really nice, most home builds are way too fancy, and it also shoots well, apart from the obligatory flyer, which you know what caused it. With the rear sight you have, to get 4 shots almost through the same hole is outstanding ! I think I would just file a shallow notch in that rear sight to have better repeatability, but for a first time shooting this gem this is outstanding, as for the rain, we also have had really heavy downpours this summer, I would like to see a bit more sun! Stay safe! Chris B.

      Lots of sun here this summer. Been almost too uncomfortable for shooting, but have a fan in the shed, and of course shade. Modern conveniences. I don’t have the skill to do fancy engraving, inlays, or carvings, but geometrically can put stuff together. It’s actually amazing how the eye can center. The problem becomes how much front sight is correct. My dad used to say, “take a fine bead”.. Always wondered “how fine “. The set trigger helps lots, especially with a hand gun. Have a fair stock of pistol barrels, and hopefully this winter can put together some “shooters”. Take care. O.R.

      Thanks, and would like to see some more folks with that ideology. Take my hat off to those that do. To have freedom is great, but to exercise it, even greater. O.R.

    Holy crap bat man! I was surprised that second shot fired, as it like to my old eyes that the first cap was stuck in the hammer. Looks like a competition shooter to me

    The wood is beautiful - I have one that is almost identical, but the wood is plain and the lock is cheap - it is built from an old Traditions kit. The hammer was too slow when I first tried it, it worked fine after I took the lock apart and cleaned out the plentiful rust then polished and lubed it.
    Your gun has better wood, a better lock, a better barrel, and better fittings. Your plum colored browning job looks great! I'm jealous.
    The only thing I got from mine (a .45) that you didn't get from yours is the satisfaction of finding it complete and unbuilt, in the original box, for $15 at a yard sale! That was 20 or so years ago, these guns are downright pricey nowadays.
    The chamber on these can hold a lot more powder than a cap and ball revolver, so they can shoot a ball with a good bit more power than the 1851 Colts and '58 Remingtons, it is easy to get 1000 fps. Also these work well with home made uncorned powder, which is only about 1/2 the density of corned powder - again this is because of the extra room provided for powder in this design.
    These are more fun to shoot than you'd expect them to be, they are fun. Mine can shoot greased and unpatched Lee 200 grain bullets just fine, too, there is plenty of opportunity for experimentation with the design.

      Well said. Modern guns are of course fun, but how many shooters do a lot other than load (if that) for them. There are of course custom builders, but that’s a low percentage and those need to be pretty experienced and have deep pockets. Black powder guns as you point out are fun to shoot and most folks stand a chance of being able to work (carefully of course) on them if they enjoy that sort of thing. Finding yours at a yard sale is classic. I purchased the parts for mine in the 80’s, but only got after it a couple years ago. The parts were not in kit form, but “rounded up”. One here, one there, wear ever I could find them. Thanks again for your comments. O.R.

      HOOKED! Like a Big Ol Bass! ME TOO! "You'll" BE OK!
      now I have Stoners, capers, long short, and brass, reload it all, pour my lead, and make, puck, and corn my own BP and all my lubes or soaps for shooting or leather.
      built my first 1858 in 77, nickel plated a 63 Colt Army barrel yesterday, maybe polish tonight? German Silver on top tomarrow?
      I LOVE His Material! and EN JOY!

      Thanks Dave. That’s interesting about the chain fire because as I’ve probably mentioned that I had two in a week using my DIY caps. I’m now taking the slow approach moving back to them. Like Ray Stevens said in his Blue Typhoon song, next time I won’t be drinking. O.R.

      @@oldranger3044 Can't say "I reget it?" Now I KNOW what a chain fire feels and sounds like. I was ready as per my SOP, so no BFD, in fact I really did not notice but for a few powerful recoils, a little loud, and my count was off, and then lead spall and flash on bags at at 90 + deges from cylinders.

    I like the job you did on that pistol I have to ask is that nickel on the trigger guard I have a Traditions Kentucky Style with brass hardware I was thinking of nickeling and certainly a good time to use them homemade caps thank you for the video OR

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  Рік тому +1

      The guard is what is called German silver or nickel silver. A mixture 60% copper, 20% nickel, 20% zinc. I had that and a nice piece of maple. Both were pre shaped so I had a bit of a time getting them together, but didn’t turn out bad, and that Green River barrel sure seems to shoot. Thanks O.R.

    To me the most frustrating thing about BP handgun shooting for handguns especially revolvers is the caps and nipples. Be nice if there were a standard that actually worked.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  8 місяців тому

      Back a few years ago when it was possible to get Remington #10 caps, Slix-shot had (still does) replacement nipples for most of the common guns. They don’t give them away, but they and the Remington caps pretty much took care of the issues you so correctly mention. O.R.

    • @doranmaxwell1755
      @doranmaxwell1755 8 місяців тому

      yeah... i do use the slixshot ones but if I have an oversized nipple it is possible to carefully 'turn' it by chucking it up in a drill and using sandpaper to lightly touch it up. not only are the caps not a common dia but they also can be different in length and the nipple being tapered.... some will be loose and some tight even tho the opening is the same size.@@oldranger3044
