Some Singaporeans can be incredibly ageist. Hawker stalls aren't just for old people to run. In fact, the younger generations ought to be encouraged to continue the culinary traditions of Singapore. As it stands, plenty of traditional dishes are already disappearing. All power to Charlene.
We should know what is the MOM rules for hiring service sector workers then you may have a better understanding why so many elderlies slog at hawker stalls
"Get a safe 8-5 job la youngster" and be a wage slave? Why, this girl has a great entrepreneurial drive. Being the head of a rooster is better being the tail of an ox. Drown out the noise and keep on keeping on
ekichandra you can always save enough to quit and start your business or even start the side business on the side. Apparently, I’m going to the county in the employment and social service since my company is moving out of town. I will continue to run my side business and hopefully make if I just build up confident I can began to hire people to do the work for me. I would large a portion of my business profit to pay worker, but who knows. Trying is better than not
Being a slave wage depends on the person. Some people don’t have that business drive like I am, but I still end up starting a business under the persuasion of my parents. Now it became my business because they back off entirely and I keep at it because it help pays family bills and would help me save up for other things I wanna try.
You can see how well educated she is from the way she speak, she probably able to find work in corporate but choose to run the hawker instead. Thats show how pure her passion is, its brimming and infectous at least to me.
She had a great education, from her father, from her overseas exposure, and she is still learning from her neighbouring hawkers. She speaks well, has a good even temperament and rationalizes well and remains respectful to her customers and elders. Keep it up young lady, I am telling you, the 9-5 working world isn't the bed of roses people think it is. All the best!
The least people willing to do the business you are in, is a blessing. Less competition! You make more money than those ignorant people who has ‘cool’ job
Keep going girl.... I remember Ho Seng Kee Wanton Mee... it’s a famous old Wanton Mee shop in JB.... it was a small shop & the son took over the business eventually and there was a time he wanted to give up.... but he kept going and was able to expand and doing very well now
Kudos to her, you should take these kinda risks when you are younger because you have little to lose, you coulnd't take this risk later in life with a family and things like a mortage.
Probably some can, but how many do? And what is the trade-off in hours spent working, benefits, vacation etc.? Genuinely curious to read up if you have any sources, because the video doesn't touch on the topic and all I've ever heard and read is the contrary.
Action > Reading I would not Sugar coat and say this lady is going to be successful... but she is going through a lot failures very quickly... through her dads recipe.. and there can only be so many failures.. before she would hit that nice sweet spot.. and find her niche in the market.... and the road to success begins from there. Never give up... and failures are finite... make as much mistakes as possible... and continue to take action... working 100-120 hour weeks And to the people looking at her like deers in the headlights... questioning and criticising... it’s going to be harder for you to succeed because she has already found her passion... and where’s yours? xD

this is a kind of new generation rising . Its really a good thing beacuse all work is equally important as long as its honest job and you feel good about it
Thanks Seth for this series of videos highlighting various hawkers and f&b businesses around Singapore.. it's nice to hear the stories behind the food..
Yes it is, i do understand since I've been work as corporate slave for 6 years. Now i starting my own small business in 29 yo, struggling but feeling better.
the taste is not bad. i chance upon one fine noon and sit just direct opposite. i realise that the food taste even better with every mouthful when i look up at charlene battling the hot and sweat, then another bite and look at her and continue. It was a strange feeling, a sudden pinged of pain into my heart and it was not long before i realise, it was love at first sign.
I don't understand the comments which the customers gave?? Like if I go to a food stall, I would just buy and go. Sometimes I just comment if the food is nice. ..I never thought someone would comment whether the store owner is too young, or too old, or too inexperienced... what sort of crap comments are those??? WTH. Seriously puzzled why anyone would give such comments?
must admit, i respect her decision, Biomedical is a very promising career, she can even be rich doing that line of work, but instead she fuck the system by doing her passion.
What's wrong with working from 6 to 3 instead of 9 to 5? Too many Singaporeans are overly sheltered and can't take alternative routes to survival. There are lots of graduates here in Australia who work as chefs and in other food businesses.
A lot people mindset is go big or go home. thats fucking stupid. Things doesnt need to be go big or go home. Rather small and stable business, thats the best.
Interesting. She mentioned that she graduated from the University of Queensland. I live in Australia and have witnessed how hard it is for international students to actually learn here. Passing is no problem, because Universities are basically big corporations that will charge international students an arm and a leg for classes. They could care less whether students are actually progressing and meeting the learning outcomes. There are a lot of short cuts to be taken such as paying people to do your assessments (I’m no saying she did this). But it could be the case that the learning style in Australia is different than what she is use to and she may not have learned as much as she could have. That may explain why she doesn’t see her degree as that useful. Or she could just be passionate about food 🤷🏽♀️ just an observation
idiot321321321 why would someone spend $100,000+ to go to university overseas and spend their time playing footy and surfing? Lol you must be referring to those who are on domestic student loans
@@mzitchbay im joking lah and imitating a local aussie with a laid back attitude chiding uptight singaporeans to chill. But you're right the tuition fees are insane and quality of teaching u get is not worth it. Pretty much like the crappier no-name US colleges which feed off international students paying full tuition.
@@aena5995 Depends on the specific university, its tuition fees, cost of living, your financial situation and how well u can afford it, how recognized its degree is, the quality of the student body etc. Ie need to use critical thinking to research and decide for yourself.
Those who comment that got degree don't go and do hawker lacks common sense. Hawker heritage is a tradition worth preserving and got nothing to do with degree. Moreover, you are encouraging the disappearing of SG food that you yourself are here for.
->Ppl complaining about the hawker culture fading away.
->also ppl heavily suggesting that young hawkers are inadequate
So fking true

Life is a cycle. All the "old" aunties, uncles used to be young too right? Every generation should continue the heritage when the right age strikes
Well, the "ageist" generation will soon die out with their "snide remarks"
Society has been brainwashed to think that corporate employment is the pinnacle, when being a successful business owner is much better (but riskier)
"Get a safe 8-5 job la youngster" and be a wage slave? Why, this girl has a great entrepreneurial drive.
Being the head of a rooster is better being the tail of an ox.

Cant agree more... Being a wage slave is a suicidal... I was entrepreneur until i seduced to take a job in a gov dept.. so depressing

"still got energy to try new things" sounds like a smart roast to the uncle lol
Pointed out everything that is wrong with the Singapore mindset..
Don’t bother about the criticism. Just do what you enjoy doing.
Her passion is already so awe-inspiring.. many milennials today struggle with finding their passion and baiscally dislike their jobs.

Man if i had a hawker to inherit to run. I would literally drop out, the traditional education route is not the only way anymore.
Changing the food game, one youngster at a time.
Love seeing this! Passion and energy is much needed for the F&B community.
I visited this place. I really liked the Nasi Lemak and had pleasant experience.
We should be grateful that our young, qualified people still want to become hawkers.
Nothing but my absolute respect for this young lady hawker. Don't mind all those doubters. YOU GO GAL, JIAYOU!!!
this girl has so much positivity i wish i can have same energy like her
It's better to be your own boss than answering to people asking stupid questions, attend pointless meetings, etc
THANK FUCK FOR THIS YOUNG LADY......not just chasing money and a comfortable life...pure passion.

Running your own business XXXXX times better than working for others.

Instead of saying no choice , need money, many say, I clean toilets enduring the stench whole day and bacterias just to pass time instead of retiring

Thanks for the video, shall try it soon! Always eat nasi lemak at Jln besar but it's punggol nasi lemak, hope this is better!

If she had a dollar for every time an uncle/auntie calls her xiao mei...

Wow. I never thought there would be gate-keepers for hawker culture too. Guess they're everywhere.
Very hardworking girl
I wish you nothing but success! Onya girl !!!
Push on! Looks great!
You go girl!
I'm in love
Wow. Amazing. I'll visit your place someday. I am from Jakarta...
Without people like her, we would need more foreign workers or talents to do such jobs. I wonder if Singaporeans are fine with that then?
It's already happening.
that's dedication..
I am so proud of you 👍🏻
My deep respect
Hope she stays in the hawker line for a long time. These days people don't commit to a job for long compared to older gens

Just do what makes you happy, the fuck with what people says bcause they wouldn’t take any responsible for what they’ve said

study hard to get degree(s) from SG / overseas > work in hawker. so what's the use of the degree?

That's look delicious , i would love to try that food :( aaa damn it i miss Singapore Hawker Foods so much
This coming from someone who works in the Bioscience industry in Australia....I would rather work at a hawker store too.

call her '美女' or 'boss'
