I know you need a heavier jig head for strong current and deeper water, but how can I tell how strong a current is and what the corresponding weight I need is? Are there any rules of thumb or hints anyone can share? I mostly inshore fish for reds, specks, flounder & sheepshead. Are there a few basic sizes (1/4, 3/8, 1/2 for example) that should work 90% of the time?

I know from wreck fishing in the North Sea (lot of current) that when you drop your jig/bait and you see that the line doesn't go down straight, there is current and you might want to increase the weight.

So color doesn't matter, oh my, my standard always have in the tackle box plastic bait colors are white and black where black can be a Purple black, Blue black, Demon purple black.
Electric Chicken, Chicken on a Chain, New Penny, well, guilty pleasure for the fisherman, just something different on a slow day.
My jig heads are usually white, black, saves thinking, both for me and
    the fish. 🤔
Wished we had a bait shop like that, reminds of the old hardware stores, our last one just closed it's doors, this week, nails in a bin loose, you put in a bag, weight them out, pay by the ounce, or lb.

OH wow they are captains, they must sleep better with people on UA-cam knowing they are captains just like Forrest Gump and all the elite shrimping boat captains before them.
