Great interview! Derry grew up, about a block from my childhood house and we went to the same high school together. He used to live across the street from the blonde hippy-chick that Neil Peart (another "unknown" St Catharines, Ontario alumni) was dating at the time. Because he is slightly younger than me (two years, I'm guessing), we weren't socially allowed to hang out or play guitar together back in those days, but certainly played the same local circuit, as time went on. Not seen him in years. so...... last time was in '86 when HS opened for Bryan Adams in some small theatre in Chicago, when I was the BA systems engineer, at the time/ tour. They had really big hair and pointy guitars, as I recall. Great live band too! Good work! Hey neighbor!
Love Derry. Way way way underrated. I love his playing on that 2nd album so much. Big influence. Thanks for this video. And I want that tire tread guitar in the background!
If you haven't, check out his tutorials on the Honeymoon Suite UA-cam channel. Even if you aren't a guitar player it's fun to watch him explain the songs.
Great interview! Always found Derry to an inspiration, as a fellow Canuck guitar player from the same generation. My guitar story: I had a 1970 Les Paul Custom and an old JCM 800 head and cabinet… what a fantastic combination! Well, in the 90’s I hit some hard times and a good friend offered to buy them from me with the agreement that I could buy them back. What could possibly go wrong? My friend went through a distressing time and had the idea of removing the finish on the back of the neck so it wasn’t sticky. His idea was to roast the guitar over a bonfire! Doh! Well, needless to say I never bought it back and was never impressed with any Les Paul that has been made since the 70’s, to buy another one. One of those moments that you kick yourself but realize that they are just things. Cheers eh

I agree Saw them at Madison Garden quite a while back. Derry was swinging his guitar around not missing a note. I was totally impressed
Outstanding interview. Derry and the rest of the HMS guys are amazing and very down to earth.
