With the recent news that Russell Malone has sadly recently passed away, it seem almost prophetic watching this great performance of him, Pat Martino and Chuck Loeb who similarly are no longer with us. Yet again, I felt ever so sad this week. It really sucks to know these gentlemen aren't with us displaying their endless skills. May they all Rest in Peace. Mark Whitfield nevertheless is still very much with us and playing incredibly well. May the gods continue to remain kind.
Rip Russell Malone I'll never forget first time I heard you play was in Albany Ga for Apostle Isaiah Revils at the Cathedral in the 80s you was the best so sorry for your passing 😢😢all my prayers and sympathy to the family ❤❤❤❤
Pat Martino 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍...
All four are great guitarists paying tribute to one of the greatest, Wes. RIP Chuck, we miss you, you really nailed this solo.
Pat Martino is in a league of his own...I never get tired of his playing, he's so amazing
Fra Aul Bingo
Russell Malone is a monster he one of the best guitar player I know I played guitar to and me and him come up together in music
So is Chuck!!...lover is groove!!...and groove is everything!!...hard worker!!...but yeah, Pat is as smooth as butter!!...
Martino is perfect , he is a monster guitarist , his swing is so sweet that his solo feels like water
Whitfield was blazing I love his feel and the way he uses double stops. I saw Chuck Loeb a couple years ago at Jazz fest in the park he and sax player were matching solos I was flabbergasted.
Loeb almost sounded more like Martino than Martino ! Sure played a lot of his licks, with maybe a bit more youthful energy than the more relaxed old Master
U can tell Martinos influence on all of them wonderful!!!
Chuck Loeb great guitar player. (R. I. P.)
RIP chuck:(
RIP Pat...always the thicker sound when playing with colleagues!
Pat Martino masters all the parameters to catch the stars on stage . He plays with
authority and conviction . He has the best sound, tone and level , the greatest knowledge
and feeling to walk on Wes paths .His hardbop lines are clear ,fluent and melodic and
he delivers a great and beautiful chorus built with architectural perfection in a complete
relaxed smiling performance . His colleagues stand as very good guitar players .
Jean-Luc Bersou: A lousy sound man.
Tout en finesse...
But ....Chuck Loeb is absolute upper class !!!!
Love Pat smiling at Chuck's solo.
: )
Gene Harris Masquerade
Gene Harris
He was really diggin' it
Everyone playing with him was influenced by him. RIP, Martino. And SO sorry to see you leave us so soon, Russel Malone. And Chuck L.
Chuck had more passion in here, that's why we can see Pat had a smile
Yeah, Chuck Loeb shredded this one! On a solid body too...cool.
Overwhelming! I am awestruck!! It would make Wes cry if he were here.
All three are using Pat Martino's techniques. Rather than a Wes Montgomery tribute it looks like a Pat Martino Legacy concert!
He is one of the best!!!
+Rik Castillo El Hombre !!!
+Rik Castillo:
Russel Malone happens to be one of the best, also.
Ken,Toronto
+Ken Rowan There is no doubt about it!!
I think you are wrong ...everybody is soloing in chord changes with alterations and subtitutions and it was not invented by martino ,, a famous guitar player always is influenced by other famous guitar player like Wes Montgomery but there are famous guitar player are influenced by famous saxophones players like parker .Coltrane ,cannonball solos
Hello Carl,
Thanks for your opinion, I appreciate sane debates.
Of course Martino didn’t invent all those concepts and technics. But his phraseology and articulation back in the 1967 (CD> El Hombre) make a great difference, in contrast with the jazz guitar context of the sixties. Kenny Burrell launched an album in the 1963, also Joe Pass, and also Grant Green, but none of them surpass Wes Montgomery technic and creativity. (even though I am a big fan of Burrell) After 1963 there wasn’t any other great jazz guitar album until the celebrated Baiyina in 1968 from Pat Martino. From those first two albums (el hombre, and Baiyina) I can identify a big change in articulation in comparison to Wes Montgomery style (for naming it in any way) the bluesy feeling was almost gone, the lines were extended and a little more acid and profound.
Of course there are many guitar players that took reference in other musicians, but I still can’t find any album in the 67’ that has the kind of phraseology Pat offered: (Miles Davis: Sorcerer, Chick Corea: Now He Sings Now He Sobs, Jackie McLean: Demon's Dance, John Coltrane: Expression, Lester Bowie: Numbers 1 & 2) and the same thing happens before that. But again, there are many reasons to support your point or mine, but from my experience, he is the one who change everything after Wes M.
I’m currently studying with him, and I can assure you that his method is transcendent, it is beyond music theory, it’s pure greatness. You definitely should check it out, if you didn’t already. It’s the first guitar method made for the guitar and from the guitar.
Something curious, he told me that he studied with a teacher named Sandole when he was a kid and Coltrane studied with him at the same time.
Greetings
They all play great but... Pat Martino is the coolest.
+My Kar EL HOMBRE !
Bad to the BOne ,played this over and over 4 times.Going to purchase the CD.Pat is in the POCKET.
Didn’t realize how great a player pat is up there with Wes for sure chuck loeb and rest are all super talented musicians! This is just wonderful music but Wes is still my favorite jazz guitarist has been for quite a while along with joe pass and Larry carlton
Respekt for the courage play with Pat on one stage ❤️ RIP legend
For me, Russell Malone is the best. They are all great... But Russell has it all... technique, melody (the most melodious outside playing I've ever heard), rhythm... I never get tired of his playing.
Pat oh sweet pat like aged brandy goes down smooth
Pat Martino"s playing and tone are magnificent.
Wow.
Great playing from all these guys.
I did not know Chuck Loeb could tear it up so beautifully and funky.
And Martino was still great.
Chuck Loeb played Giant Steps in all 12 keys for fun. While he was sleeping.
Met Pat 4 times starting 1972..Chicago..The Master. And a better Man
RIP chuck , man you cooked...
Martino's soloing magic is at least in part an adaption of techniques that can also be traced to Jack McDuff and Don Patterson, two of his mentors. The tension building with not quite repetitious lines ending in an explosion out of it is very much an organ technique.
Great observation. Never thought of it like that and it makes perfect sense.
I was listening very casually when Mark Whitfield's solo came on. I did not know who that was but I will be listening a little closer to him from now on. Everyone sounds a little more like George Benson than Wes but that is alright .
pure magic from 4 masters paying tribute to another master...WOW
Masterful guitar players all. Listening to each of these master guitarists take on this great number, then listening to Wes playing it (in both the Creed Taylor/Don Sebresky commercialized production and in his trio format), you come to understand the difference between master craftsman (like these guys) and pure genius (like Wes was).
a pat martino fan and disciple since 1971.. my lifelong hero and mentor.. but here chuck loeb took the prize for best solo.. 🎸😎
Great guitar quartet with some amazing, smoking solos. Love the way Malone snuck that "Goin' Out of My Head" quote under Martino's theme statement. RIP Chuck, thanks for the memories.
Chuck Loeb sounded real nice on the bridge. The flight of the bumble bee or whatever it is quote is cool on this. Am I the only one that caught Russell' " Do the Hustle" quote?
خیلی ممنون. اصلا انتظار نداشتم فارسی زیر ویدیو نوشته باشه
I would have loved to hear one of them play like Wes.
D Ivaz There were lots of references to Wes.
so I ......but only ONE was WES MONTGOMERY !!!!! others are only trained guitar players ...... " neck workers " . ..and we need this complete team sharing
here and there some fine lines to make the deal !
great Pat Martino and Chuck Loeb !
Chuck Loeb was an incredible guitarist . Tone , melliflous playing !
Rest dear man .... 👍🙋♂️🙏
Few years ago I saw Pat Martino live performance..I will never will forget that night.
4 grandes de la guitarra jazz! Pat eres un grande entre los grandes en todos los sentidos estupendo ser humano y guitarrista, Larga vida al master Pat
Pat was mentored by Wes when he was a teenager. Wes once said that Pat was the only one who could keep coming up with more new ideas than Wes could.
The camera’s Where’s Waldo “work” is like a foretaste of a multi-participant Zoom call.
Chuck Loeb solo....Daaaammmmn!!!!!^
Awesome
RIP PAT and CHUCK
Even Martino was enjoying Chuck Loeb playing Martino! Chuck was obvious the man on that tune.
Loeb, Killed it.
I think out of all the fine musician on the stage Pat Martino licks where the most
soulful.
Pat's owning it! He's turning his head like he's saying been there done that
Just when you think you've all heard....Pat Martino arrives..!!!
Oh my this is one of the best videos I love to watch and hear Pat Martino ,chuck Loeb have met them both so so cool and always the nicest went back stage and talked to them love there music...
Chuck loeb destruiu!!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love it so much, each and every tone, and most importantly, each and every solo was distinct and memorable in its own way, will we ever get another performance like this, on any instrument, ever????
Lovely playing, Pat is way ahead in his expression .. and language.
Que buena jam session de 🎸 gracias 🎶 saludos Mr Pat Martino, que descanse🎸 🙏
Rest In Peace Pat love and peace.
Chuck Loeb, best solo for me
RIP :(
Loeb was great but...Pat invented all that shit !
Pat ...
Pat Martino.
C'est d'une finesse et d'une technicité...
Le meilleur pour moi sur les solos.
Who cares
More sensible guy : ( i play the game of the comments here :) ) Chuck for sure, none of them have most vocabulary and feeling. Like says John Golberg ( see comment below) : He took it away.
God, this is wonderful! Pat is out of this world- but so is every other musician onstage. What a treat
Excelente músico es Pat Martino 👌🤝👍👌
Nice nod to Don Sebesky by Russell Malone. Great playing by all.
If Pat could play the trumpet he would have sound like Miles! Thanks for the upload, wonderful!!
Thanks you. Four virtuosos. Pat makes it look effortless...somehow. Met him at the airport in Switzerland, had a great conversation on the flight to NY. Very interesting guy to say the least.
the elements of the structure of this blues brought us to a new event which was a plateau in which other events were multiplied
Wonderful to revisit this great playing and see Pat very happy, sadly Chuck is gone, Pat may never play again, Russell and Mark are outstanding, please credit all members on YT vids, they earned it. much thanks
ckuck loeb oh my gooood what an interpretation...
Chuck Loeb did it for me!!!
Martino is one of the best ever.
Best of the Best only missing Wes
An amazing guitar band
Une savante dissertation pour le doctorat en Guitare ! Grave 😳😳😳😳 👍
Such legends,, each one has his own magnificent tone . Thanks for posting this video
Yet to see Martino & Benson in the ring !
It shouldn't be a problem considering they're friends !
Wow SO MUCH fantastic guitar!!
Oh Pat sweet Pat you had the nicest touch.
One of best smooth jazz tune!!
that term “smooth jazz” is quite corny, most jazz greats hate it..
Pat Martino perfetto
Thanks for posting...Outstanding performance of this guitar "cats"...
4 Guitarists Summit Conference @ Jazz In Marciac - 9 August 2009
Pat Martino (1 & 5), Mark Whitfield (2 & 6), Russell Malone (3), Chuck Loeb (4), guitars; Matt King, keyboards; Will Lee, bass; Wolfgang Haffner, drums.
Check out “Russell Malone "Caravan" @Jazz_in_Marciac 9 août 2009" @ ua-cam.com/video/a4gBAZzmw04/v-deo.html
Russell plays his ass off, and so does Matt King on piano. You’ll probably feel the same way about Wolfgang Haffner’s drums as you do on this piece, whatever that is.
pat martino good lord... like a grown man with children... wow
Pat Rules, amazing unique technique!
Wow! I am speechless! Thanks for sharing!
These guitarists are all GREATS. I love all four players and transcribe from them. I thought that was a tribute to WES. For me that was GUITAR DIARRHEA. One trying to play faster than the other. George Benson shared a story with me: He was playing in a club in N.Y., 60'S, eyes closed, playing fast, opened his eyes and there was WES staring in his face and said to him
"GEORGE, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING..."? He had to reinvent himself by taking lessons in harmony and technique.
Lov e that song and this interpretation. It just has to be the Umbria atmospere..
It´s nothing to say more than this is just great!
Chuck And Pat RIP
It's interesting to watch their right hand techniques. Very different.
hate that loose snare, since Pat set the pace it was a pretty hard task to follow, all these guys are great in their own right, Pat's here Tokyo now doing Cotton Club shows
Mark ,Russell Pat ,Chuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I
Mark Whitfield hands down but they all are great hands clapping
The ballerina David Spinnoza
Fabuleux !
Bunch of killers on stage. Damn!
For Jazz guitar---Pat Martino & George Benson----Everyone else draw a number for 2nd Place!!!!!
Sara Thomas Their no second place! everyone is good in their own right!
@@andrewmiller5610 yeah right
RIP.....Pat...🌹🌹🌹🙏🙏🙏
Russell Malone ripped
gettin' paid by the note....
Wes would have grabbed his guitar if he was there!
LOEB took it away here. Without doubt...
NO WAY!!
+Stephen Porter Yes way! Cleanest and most musical by far, IMO.
and by such a loooong distance ! i can't believe he's already gone now :(
Definately.....Pat's got great lines but can be like a dead fish at times. Loeb was full of emotional phrasing.
On this, Loeb is the man
