This week we tackle a frequently asked questions we get here at Clean My Space HQ - how to clean LAMINATE floors - and since there's a lot of misinformation out there regarding how to clean a laminate floor, we thought we would go right to the source for some answers! Especially that laminate floor HAZE that seems impossible to get rid of!
We were doing a project with Armstrong Flooring in Lancaster, Pennsylvania last weekend, so we asked to film a video in their showroom all about laminate. We also asked to include one of their head laminate product people, Marcia, to get the exact cleaning deal right from the source. I hope you like it and find this as informative as I did!

Bona is one brand , just make sure you get the correct one for the type of floor you have. I made the mistake of buying the wrong one and took forever to get the haze out, I finally used vinegar and hot water and my floors are shinny now. Just have to put up with the vinegar smell for a day.

I use a similar concoction that CMS suggested in one of her earlier videos. I own a cleaning business and it works beautifully: 1/3 bottle of vinegar, 1 capful of rubbing alcohol, 3 drops of dawn in a spray bottle and top of with water. Spray on a small section and flat mop in the direction of the grain. Floors are clean and shiny and my clients are always complimenting me on how amazing their floors look. I find the commercial products leave the floors feeling slightly sticky, leave a residue over time and are very expensive.

Hi Melissa, When we bought our laminated flooring many years ago, we were told to use nothing but vinegar for cleaning them. However, I found you can also use ammonia for those harder stains without damaging the flooring. Now I have found a homemade cleaning product that is superb and doesn't harm the laminate. Recipe: 1/3 c. water, 1/3 c. rubbing alcohol, 1/3 c. white vinegar, 3 drops of Dawn, and 5-50 drops of essential oil if you like. Mix all ingredients together in a spray bottle and shake before using on floors especially if you use essential oils. My floors are looking brand new again and they dry very quickly with the alcohol in the mixture.

Usually I love your videos bc you suggest homemade solutions that are inexpensive and safer than the store bought chemicals - but in this video you just left it at use manufacturer laminate sprays. I don't know if this was influenced by where you shot the video... Or not.. But i really hope you do a part two as homemade solutions and strategies for laminate flooring is a big problem for many (especially condo dwellers). Thanks for all your other videos, they are and were really helpful. Thanks!

I'm a professional residential cleaner and do prefer to use some of the spray cleaners, however, we find that you still need to get the microfibre mop at least a little bit damp with water in order to still get the floors CLEAN. Otherwise, if you are not getting the mop pad hot & damp, the sprays just shine the floor but won't sanitize or dissolve things like spilled milk/juice stains, gum, gunk, dried food etc... Just dump the mop pad in the bucket of hot water (we use a few drops of a mild, ph neutral and ecofriendly floor wash that does not harm the finish, wax, wood or laminate and is streak free) and wring out mop pad as much as possible so it is only slightly damp. Then we use the floor spray directly on floor and mop like normal to give the floor a nice shine. (I prefer the Method brand "squirt and mop" to the "BONA" brand).

I wash all my gkids' stuffed animals in mesh laundry bags on gentle or handwash cycle in front loading washing machine. Do NOT put in dryer with any temperature (most heat will ruin the poly furs!!)... just on fluff cycle a lil bit and then air dry... either in or outside dep. on weather... sun is great dryer and oh they smell so good again!! if you have jumbo size stuffies... handwash (dish soap or laundry detergent) outside or in bathtub... rinse well (hose off), squeeze excess water with towels + finally lay on towels to dry or again... put in sun outside.
my clean secret is reg. white distilled vinegar goes in every laundry load wash AND rinse cycle with a lil downy.
good luck and clean breathing!! 😄

Claire Bear Me neither. I only know mine are called Floating Floor Boards. I only use a very , very dry mop over them that was dipped in water only and rung out so the mop is almost dry. That gets the dirt off , But I have no idea what the floor boards are made of. I know for sure they are not hard wood. I got them from Bunnings , My son laid them for me in my flat. I’ve had them down for about 4 years. I have some scratches in kitchen where cutlery has fallen on them. Otherwise they have worn well. I paid about $27 a metre for them. Love to know what type of flooring they are ? They are not shiny. More a flat non shiny finish.

    • @cleanmyspace
      @cleanmyspace  9 років тому +12

Dianne RawGirl here's the thing - the manufacturer is going to tell you to use a specially formulated product, but I also know that if vinegar is used *properly* as you suggest here, it would be OK too...the issue is that manufacturer's can't recommend it because not everyone uses it properly. A formulated cleaner is essentially fool-proof which is why it is recommended. However if you can figure out a way to make vinegar work as you have, then it's all good. Make sense?

Hi Melissa when I get haze on my laminate floors (this can happen even when just using vinegar on my laminate) I go back over it with a window cloth shoved into a swifter mop. As a professional cleaner, what is your favorite type of floor for an open concept. My front door opens into the living room which flows into the kitchen. Currently I have tile right in front of the door, then laminate as a walk way into the kitchen and laminate in the kitchen as well and lastly carpet in the living room area. This is too many different types of floor for this space. I would like to choose one option for the entire area. What are your thoughts?

Hi Melissa, we live in an apartment and has a balcony. Because we live so close to a busy road, so we have a very dirty balcony floor and we can't use the balcony for relaxation at all!! Two questions for you: 1. How to mop the balcony floor in an easy way and how to keep it clean? (it gets dirt all the time!!) 2. We hang and air our clothes on the balcony. Because the airer gets direct sunlight, it gets rusty easily. How to get rid of that?
    Thanks heaps!!!

Hi Melissa. One thing that is a big no no in cleaning laminate flooring that is not mentioned is the popular steam mops. When using these on laminate flooring they will actually VOID the homeowners warranty. The biggest drawback to installing hardwood, engineered wood and wood look laminate is the problem of moisture seeping through the seams and causing major lifting and swelling problems. Just an FYI I thought you'd like to pass on. Love your videos!

My biggest frustration is with my large tile squares. The tile itself is easy to clean and durable, but the grout between the tiles is maddening! It's a conspiracy! Well, at the very least, it's just a reservoir for debris to get stuck in when I'm sweeping the floor, not to mention having to deep-clean it line by line. :( I've begun to vacuum our tile floors each day (did I mention I have 4 teen boys at home?) and that's helpful, but imho, grout is eeeee-vil! Haha. Hope you had fun here in the States!

Do you have any recommendations to speed up the process and to make it any easier. I mean it takes sometimes up to 50 swiffer passes until it does not pickup ant more. Please advise and thank you in advance.

Which picks up more dirt a microfiber dust mop or a regular broom? ( on laminate floor) Also how often would that microfiber dust mop have to be washed? Or maybe you could alternate between the two? I sweep my kitchen daily. ( shoes on the floor )

I was just about to send you a message asking the same questions you answered. I've been busy laying new flooring this week and am so in love with my new floors and want them to stay looking their best that I still have a couple questions. I have 3 dogs and 2 cats and wanted to know what are the best brooms, vacuums and mops to use on laminate. Right now I have a dyson DC07 with a hard floor attachment but I'm afraid it'll scratch the floor being dragged around and also have a Rubbermaid reveal microfiber mop. I hate all the swifter products only due to having to buy replacement pads. With all my animals, one tween girl and all the neighborhood kids and a husband that works for the railroad that gets expensive when I'm cleaning every other day if not everyday. Thank you. I love 💖all your videos.

We had an aging cat who frequently urinated in the corner of our dinning room. We used "Dumb cat" after several failed attempts to end his marking behavior, and it completely removed the smell and he stopped going in the corner! www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=13110 Should be safe on laminate.

My floor cleaning problem: getting rid of cat urine smell from years ago (poor thing was sick & elderly). Back the smell comes every humid spell. Unless you have an idea I haven't tried I'm down to the last resort of replacing the carpet and sub-flooring if necessary. PS. Love my vynil ... laminate doesn't take the wear and tear. In fact, maybe I should replace that smelly wall-to-wall carpet with vynil and rugs and solve any elderly cat problems of the future before they start.

Hi Melissa! My floor cleaning query is - what is the best way to clean and care for Chinese Slate Tiles? Do they need to be oiled to keep them glossy? We have Chinese slate in our kitchen and as the flooring for our inglenook fireplace so they would get a lot of soot. We have recently moved in so not sure of the best way to look after them! Thanks! We just moved into our new house about a month and a half ago and have these really good looking wood laminate floors super shiny, absolutely gorgeous for the first few days were there slowly they became doll and dirty when I brought my cat home kitty paws everywhere for her everywhere it’s just it’s been a nightmare to keep clean. I do literally sweep and run my vacuum every single day I’ve done nothing with the floor except use a steam cleaner and it looks as though is ever literally just damn water and steam cleaner. I haven’t been able to get my supermarket yet, so it’s like what am I doing wrong? I feel like I cannot keep before clean to save my life.

I bought a cleaner made for laminent floors. Our floor is light wood kind of grey and it's a dull finish no shine. I read it more carefully when I got home and was horrified it said to use gloves and mask when applying, keep away from pets and children. This sounds very toxic. I have a 14 month old and two cats. She does not yet walk so is crawling all over the floor. Is this safe for my daughter and two cats?
It's called Home laminate, hardwood and parade floor cleaner. For urethan and was finished hardwood. When I went to the installer of the floor they said to just use water to clean the floor I wonder if this would get it clean? I don't particularly love the look of the floor but we had no say it was a house being build to sell. What is the best way to clean dull laminent when you have children and pets?

***** I use an old Swiffer DUST mop with a microfiber cloth on it to clean my laminated floors and tile floors. It works really well but I always spray my floors rather than using a bucket (too much cleaning solution that way). Clean your cloth frequently with Dawn and NEVER wash them in the washing machine using fabric softener. I have always washed my cloths by hand using Dawn. They may not look as clean as you might like but they work great! Hope this helps.

Downstairs we have laminate and textured tile. I use a steam mop (which only uses water) on the tile, but it doesn't seem to get clean enough. Is there a solution I can use in my steam mop or another way of really scrubbing the tile? It's too big of an area to get on my hands and knees. Should I just hire a cleaning company for my deep cleanings?

I live in a mobile home that still looks from the 70's. My boyfriend doesn't want to change anything. The floor is a nasty yellow color with a flower in each square of the linoleum floor and dirt gets trapped in the wedges of the flowers. I spend at least 6 times a year (every couple of months) on my hands and knees scrubbing every single square linoleum tile. Is there an easier way? I do one section one day and do another section another day but a week later it looks worse than before. It is very hard for me to get on my hands and knees doing this because I just had open heart surgery and my health isn't that great. Please let me know. I would really appreciate it.

I am a old vinyl floor that probably was here when the condos were built 13 years ago, I want to replace them but that’s not an option right now, how can I at least get them a little cleaner than they are now? I have been using the swifter I figured they are already damaged and please easier for me because of being on disability it’s just easier to maneuver it does pick up some of the dirt but it does not show any difference in the floor🙁 what’s your secret girl?? 🙀. I forgot, my counter tops ore the same way... I know you get a lot of postings, but it would be nice to get some advice. 🌺
