I still can't believe they had the audacity to call the pool map in Splatoon 3 Mahi-Mahi Resort, it is NOT the same map
They learned their lesson when they decided not to call marlin airport ancho v games.

MK8s Koopa Cape is less Koopa Cape than S3 Mahi Mahi is Mahi Mahi, ESPECIALLY after the rework.
@@batmanbud2 What are you talking about? The track is almost identical, minus the current in the pipe. They even removed the dumb glide ramp that was in the 7 version and brought back the normal ramp.
I specifically remember Chara and his pals saying one time the stage in Splatoon 3 is such a letdown compared to the original Mahi Mahi Resort, that they'd call it 'Two Star Hotel' instead.
This game is why I'm in college now, doing digital art and biology-focused character designs. That weird grunge it has, the Miiverse chaos, the chaotic balance... I adore it.
I just got a powered USB port so I can finally move my USB data onto the WiiU too :)

@@ipadoddagata963 It's basically this fanmade system for online play that allows online for Wii U and 3DS games to continue. There's also other stuff like restoring Miiverse as well as they have archived all the Mario Maker 1 uploaded courses and so they'll be able to restore those too. It basically allows Wii U and 3DS online to keep going after Nintendo shuts its stuff down. There's a good video by Jon on Good Vibes Gaming if you wanna check that out.

The thing I love the most about Splatoon 1 is how the devs always swung for the fences. They always went all out on the kits and the maps, which made them amazing when they turned out well and still fun when they didn’t turn out so great.
Splatoon did have bad maps, but at least they were still fun and unique. Now all the bad maps are just have Tetris pieces with one route through mid

Some things never change
Damn this somehow makes the dynamo worse than I already thought it was. Though that's a one-shot in most cases because most players would've taken some arbitrary bit of damage already before getting smited.

I don’t know why, but the original splatoon always felt the most ”Splattoon” to me, it just had more of that chaotic energy, and it’s not just nostalgia speaking, even when looking at gameplay of the 3 it just dosen’t hit the same.
However i can’t say that the UI aged well.

I don't know since I hadn't played splat 1 myself. Though part of me would assume a lot of that comes down to the fact that the it was... the first. Or at least like with you specifically citing "Chaotic Energy" as the core of your feelings that splatoon 1 was the splatooniest.
Splatoon 1 was a completely new IP in a genre Nintendo had never actually set foot into, and was made before "Esports" were really a thing (I mean, it kinda existed, but this was before it was really on Nintendo's radar. and only JUST after smash 4 acknowledged their competitive scene existed at all for the first time through For Glory, while still keeping it segregated to its own space). So, Nintendo went kinda crazy with the idea. The most powerful and chaotic versions of weapons, specials, etc.
Splatoon 2 meanwhile was a refinement that brought a greater degree of order. Almost every Special was a significantly more toned down version of those from the original. Invincibility from Bubbler replaced with Ink Armor. The Killer Wail's ridiculously massive hitbox replaced with the Stingray's careful control and smaller beam (Though ironically, Stingray became an absolute menace). The Invincible Kraken replaced with the slightly less invincible Baller, etc. Ad Nauseum. It had a more competitive bent compared to the original, with a much heavier focus on things like the competitive balance of weapons.
Splatoon 3 is... I'm not sure where exactly it stands since some say it's worse than 2 overall while some say it's the best of the three, but it serves somewhat as a continuation of this same refinement. Movement being given a greater emphasis, those things which overwhelmed in splatoon 2 being reworked or removed entirely (Example: Stingray once again getting reduced through the Killer Wail 5.1, with a similar design concept but without the control that made stingray so dominant).
I'm gonna agree with you on this. It felt like to original idea unaltered by any success or additional content. I was a blank world with room to grow and it served as a canvas to paint on especially with how a lot of the stages were gray before you started painting. It really made sense as a painting game.
I wished they brought some of the old weapons back - or at least their skins - like the wasabi, berry splattershot pro, bento splat charger, and the mini splatling for example because some of them were really pretty or just looked cool as hell. The original eliter from 1 is in 2, but behind glass in the training area I believe.

I think that last clip was an old replay from before Kraken Royale was announced which enhanced that clip since Chara called it.

i remember getting splat 1 all the way back when it came out, and i was just a little kid. i remember when the max level cap increased from 20 (which i had) to 50. I remember unlocking the coveted golden dynamo roller that you get after reaching level 20. i remember beating dj octavio 20 times over. i remember sharing my account with my sister and her getting mad when i accidentally switched from the roller to the jet squelcher (we didn't know how to change it back.) i was the true definition of a casual player - picking the rollers that looked cool and enjoying every map equally. i will never forget the original splatoon

I have never played Splatoon 1, and most likely will never experience it, but damn those stages look fun to play on. They have a "playground" feel to them, meanwhile the newer stages smoothes things out and make them cater to the competitive players. Why did they have to do this? :(

Cater to competitive? I personally think they're optimised for turf war due to the lack of inkable walls, which commonly distracted newer players and made them think they needed to be inked too.
There's also 1 good flank on 1 map and minimal effort put into map renovations. I doubt they had the competitive scene in mind

one thing i feel like they removed from splatoon 1 stages was big walls separating areas, an example being ancho and urchin. it also made it look like the stages were an actual part of the area they were encompassing. i feel like in 3 all of the stages are just flat and barren, having the scenery built around some random flat tetris shaped box slapped on top of it
Nah they catered to casuals by dumbing down the maps to make it less confusing. less flanks (and good ones), less inkable walls, not as tall,

I’ve said this before an ill say it again: the ink looked better in Splatoon than any of the sequels. It isn’t as bright and reflective, making it better for people with accessibility issues and also easier to tell what the heck is actually going on

If anything this is just the start of an awesome video game franchise I don't want to seem like one of those people are like oh just dealing with it because I never play the first game and I never know how hard it would hit but there are almost every single music in splatoon 1 on UA-cam so you can just listen and reflect and have good memories and even if the server shut down you can always play a story mode remade
Since Nintendo is pretty much killing one of the games that literally made Splatoon what it is today, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to port Splatoon 1 to the Switch/Switch 2 either as part of Nintendo Switch Online or even as its own individual game that comes with the a Switch Wii U Pad

Hey Chara, just wanted to let you know that I just finished writing a research paper for English class on a topic of my choice, so I chose The history of updates in Splatoon 2, and I used your meta history videos as sources for some of the info and I got a pretty good grade so thanks for making good informative videos.
Farewell Splatoon 1…you were the FIRST ever 3rd person shooter game that not only actually caught my interest, being the ONLY shooter game that I liked, and enjoyed playing, but also the one shooter game that made me have a lot of fun experiences for years leading up to the 3rd installment, despite the internet connection flaws. (and being on a console that most people don’t like.)
It’s great to take a blast(er) to the past for the game that started it all ever since I was roughly 12 at the time.
Also, the dog commentary on Mahi cracked me up. XD
One of my first friends from 4th grade told me about this game around the time it came out. I looked it up and was immediately hooked. After begging my mom, I got Splatoon for Wii U as an end-of-year gift.
Fast-forward almost 9 years, it remains in my soul. I will remember this game forever

I never got into splatoon till 3 came out. I saw the big maps and it looked annoying to me (I mainly play fighting games). But now that I understand and enjoy the game, I realized how bad high school me was missing out.

Thank you for this Chara!! I've been hooked on Splatoon since the very first trailer so this was so nostalgic for me. Anyone remember the bomb sniffer ability?! 😂 Oh BTW in case anyone from back then doesn't know, you can go into the story mode and see how BROKEN inkzooka really was.(honestly would make for an amazing UA-cam Short coughcoughCharacough) Story mode still features DAY 1 inkzooka since the nerfs only affected online play. It was so freakin good 😂
Although I've never played Splatoon 1 Multiplayer it walked so Splatoon 2 and 3 can run. R.I.P Splatoon 1 Multiplayer you will be missed.
Splatoon 2 crippled
I started in splatoon 3, and never really thought the maps were that bad, but watching this, the maps are so good I don't even know which direction you're going.
Splatoon 1 might be going, but we'll always have the memories. And besides, Splatoon has always been about moving forward and, while appreciating the good things that have happened, not dwelling on the past. It might seem completely stupid, but this game has gotten me consistently emotional every time I've beaten the story modes because it really feels like an ending and a beginning. Like while we're leaving something in the past, we're moving forward to something better. I never thought a game about some stupid squid and octopus people would make me cry so much but it did.
But, as is said for a lot of things ending: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
As a person who started in splatoon 2, seeing just how good the old hammer head was is making me want to jump off the new one, (if you catch my drift) 🙂🫠

It's kinda wild to me that Saltspray Rig will just be gone in a few days (outside of one story mode level in S1). Even Urchin is preserved sorta through MK8D battle mode lol.

I dieharded splatoon all my childhood, I was absolutely cracked at it, my Wii U stopped working for some reason 2 weeks ago (it was easily fixable) and I just now reliased it's too late. :(
I have played maybe 5 hours total of Splatoon 1 multiplayer. I only played Turf War, never touched Ranked, and aside from the single player mode, that was all the time I put into the game. (This was because it never really caught my attention until the Splatoon 2 trailers sold me on the concept, despite the fact that I actually had a Wii U.)
My one and only memory of those 5 hours was consistently getting lost on Mahi Mahi Resort, cause the changing tide always screwed up my sense of direction. But y'know, in hindsight, that was a GOOD thing. Sure, if I'd put more time in, I would've began to understand and eventually master the layout, but in that time, the map felt big. It felt like I always had enough room to mess around with whatever weapon I was using (don't remember which ones, but I know my choice picks included buckets and short range shooters), run from engagements I couldn't win, farm specials (I liked the Inkzooka and Kraken the most), jump around the islands, and overall, just always feel like I was doing something.
It's unfortunate how S3's Mahi Mahi got completely butchered. It just feels cramped, and you'd think the extra movement options the game gives you would've added more to that stage. Nope!

I think im favorite part about splatoon 1 compared to splatoon 3 is that everything, even useless walls and trees and railings and whatnot were all paintable! There is no reason other than having it look nice, but it adds so much for me, like I miss having unable walls with those barriers instead of uninkable ones
