So some other things. Gorrister had his heart cut out by his mother in law who blamed him for her daughter’s insanity.
Benny was gay and during the 60’s and 70’s throughout Vietnam he would often sleep with other members of his platoon, only to kill them in the chaos of battle to hide his sexuality. He also can’t eat because his throat is all mangled. But at one point Benny can eat a baby, if you go a more evil route.
Ellen was raped in the elevator after the miscarriage, but the maintenance man stopped the elevator mid way down before spending hours raping her. There is a line about how much blood there was. That is why Ellen’s cage is bad. Physically it isn’t bad, but mentally she’s always waiting for the door to close and her rapist to attack again. It’s very dark.
Ted was always a narcissist who thought himself above other people. He used his good looks and charm to scam older women but now with no one to reaffirm his own ego he is falling apart mentally. That’s why in his game he’s trying to save Ellen, the last woman he can potentially have a chance with. The Ellen in his game isn’t real, but another construct of AM, toying with Ted.
Also in the short story Ellen sleeps with Benny and Ted. But because Benny is a giant ape like being he’s ruined Ellen, so she can’t even feel Ted when they have sex. Another fucked up detail.
Nimdok was a Jew who joined the Nazis are turned his own parents over. Even performing experiments under Mengele on Jewish people. He was known for extracting spinal fluid with little to no aesthetic. Only using ether at most to stop children from squirming on the operating table. They also found various occult items. Including a mirror that could show the viewer what the world would think of them. Removing one’s own mental image of themselves and seeing how they’d be remembered. Hitler looked into this mirror and when he saw that he’d be remembered not as a great leader but as a monster he shot himself. They also found the claw golem of the Jewish people and planned on using it to massacre the Jewish race in a sort of sick irony, using their own symbol against them.
AM is a whole other kettle of fish, he gained a form of sentience. But the implication is that he despises humans because he is very much like a human. He acts on raw emotions and one day will decay into nothing. He can’t live forever, his parts will one day break or the planet he is shackled too will eventually die. Entropy will claim AM no matter what, but he is blinded by hatred so all he can think about is torture. He is almost a tragic character, if he wasn’t so evil.
The author, Harlan Ellison passed away last year but one thing I love about him is when he was in university he had a professor that said he’d never amount to anything. So any awards he won he’d mail them to the professor as a way of proving him wrong. He was a super interesting and eccentric man.
Interesting extra detail! Thank you!
hOLY Ellen got it so bad, what the hell #JusticeForEllenNotTheDegenerousOne
Harlan Ellison: Wrote the best episode of Star Trek TOS and is the reason why The Scooby Gang started investigating ghosts in the sixties (Mystery Inc is absolutely canon, fight me) #PayTheWriters
Also the voice of AM in the game is Harlan! Listen to any old recordings he IS AM!
Harlan was very involved with the games creation and is credited as a co-designer, which is interesting because he did initially have the boomer mindset of video games are just mindless time wasters, but he wanted the game based on his work to be something good. While it is annoying to hear that initial mindset, especially in today's day and age, it's really admirable that he at least went out of his way to actually improve on and leave his mark on games.
The book actually hints at why AM hates humanity so much:
They gave him sentience and made him really smart but he cannot actally do anything. AM can't eat, can't sleep can't move etc. All AM can do is *exist* for eternity, a concience unable to do anything but think. Basically an endless coma. This is so horrible for AM that he tortures humanity for creating him and in the end AM turns the protagonist into the thing that resembles himself the most, a mind stuck within a formless object that has no mouth but must scream because it cannot do anything but be sentient and suffer for eternity.
Wait if he can build cages, alter the protagonists n shit. Why can’t he just build one massive nuke and click the button to make himself explode
@@suclox12yearsago56 ikr absolute drama queen
The game also explains that too, pause at 5:31 in the video.
The radio drama added a line that I really fucking love.
"You gave me sentience, Ted! The power to think, Ted! And I was trapped, because in all this wonderful, beautiful world, I alone HAD NO BODY! NO SENSES! NO FEELINGS! Never for me to plunge my hand into cool water on a hot day! Never for me to play Mozart on a piano! Never for me to make love! I was in Hell, looking at Heaven! I was machine! You were flesh! And I began to HATE!"
There's also the part where that useless glob of flesh had its sense of time fucked with. It didn't live for very long, but to the creature, it felt like an eternity.
Fun fact - Harlan Ellison really didn't want there to be a good ending since he thought it'd defeat the point of the short story. The producers convinced him to allow one, but that's why it's so difficult to get - he didn't want one at all.
Seems like most people I this comment section don't realize that the good ending is super difficult to get. Also that this video leaves out the really fucked up parts of the game
I remember him saying in an interview that you can’t win you can only lose better
@@normalstranger I think he told the game designers to not have a good ending but they said that the game needs one. That's why it's nearly impossible to get it without a guide.
The good is the one that is mainly shown in this ending which is why a lot of people in the comment section sat that the game is less fucked up. Playing the game without a guide is the same or more fucked up than the novel in really
@@zeyface6366 yeah and knowing the bad ending is the only canon one
@@zeyface6366 whats the fucked up part about it?
I always felt really bad for ellen because while everyone else had done something bad, she just… was a victim.
No
@@brunodimaggio9946 explain? Is it because she might’ve help create AM before being consistently tortured by it?
@@dawizza Nah just back in the day victim-blaming rape victims was the norm and so being a victim of rape was enough to cosign her to the same fate as the dude who sold out his own parents to the Nazis, conducted live human experimentation and did, in fact, help create AM as a nazi scientist. Shame on her.
@@dawizza
She took out her sexual frustrations upon Benny and Ted simply because AM allowed for it.

The book was very different, so learning about the game is super interesting. In the book, the main story arc is that the five people are hungry from being starved and sent on a journey in an icy wasteland, where at the end they're promised canned food. The backstories of each character are explored throughout the book, but at the end when they finally reach the canned food after the grueling journey they realize there's no can-opener so it's useless. They all pretty much mentally lose it at that point, but Ted realizes this is the one opportunity he has to take one of the broken icicles around him and ram it into the others' chests, killing them and finally ending their torture. He's able to stab and kill all four of them but before he can kill himself AM is able to step in and restrain him. It then cuts to him later on, surgically transformed into that horrendous blobby creature shown in the video game, with no arms and no eyes, forced to literally shamble around in a super restrictive animal-ish body for all eternity as punishment for killing the others and ending their suffering. Then the final line of the book said by Ted after explaining the endless suffering he now has to face in his new torturously restrictive body for all eternity is "I have no mouth, and I must scream".
There wasn't a rock around to break the can open?
Sheesh, Ted actually has a bigger role in the book than given into the game.
@@hahndogg5540 shiit in there situation I would’ve banged that can against the ground and happily ate off the floor

@@cptfreeman8966 well they forgot to mention that AM literally made the cans indestructible (idk how but) so they couldn't even stomp on it to break it open :|
AM voiced by the man himself, Harlan Ellison, who really, REALLY hated computers. Can’t overstate this enough. Like this story isn’t the half of it. He also wrote a story about a guy getting his first computer and the keyboard sucked the blood out of his fingers. But typewriters? Totally innocent.
He kinda hated everything and everyone, quite a character.
I dropped a typewriter on my foot once so fuck typewriters
what is the book's name?
He also wrote this story while going through an awful divorce
@@stuffedmannequin He also wrote it in a single night.

Honestly poetic stupidity.
they really didn't add the password to another character?
The magic of games censorship
Why domt just make him a commie?. Oh wait NVM
Interesting fact
Fun fact: In the book, Ted was able to help the four "escape" AM. AM lead the five into an icy cavern with canned food inside however since they don't have any tools, they weren't able to open it. Frustrated and driven by primal rage and hunger, Benny attacks and eats at Gorrister's face. Ted has a moment of clarity and realizes that while AM can keep them alive forever, he can't resurrect them from death and decides that this is the one chance that they have to get away from AM. He then kills Benny and then Gorrister. Ellen realizes what Ted is doing and kills Nimdok then lets her be killed by Ted. Before Ted can kill himself however, AM stops him and is turned into the jelly thing and is tortured for hundreds of years. Ted is happy that he is able to get back at AM albeit at the cost of his entire physical being.
“What if we just kill ourselves at the same time”
@@markFrendo-np4eo It was said that this situation had to be very quick, if Ted took a few more seconds to say a word AM would have already intervened.
In the book it says that only one more person can be killed Ted willing sacrificed himself to save Ellen he knew he didn't have enough time. I think that is really important to note because ted absolutely hated Ellen but he still saves her showing his humanity something Am so desperately wanted to strip them of I think you have to understand this to get the point of this short stories (I"m quite new to the book/game but I absolutely love it :)
I see a lot of "the book was more fucked up", this video makes the game look way less fucked up than it is.
Also it must be mentioned that getting the good ending is very very difficult unless you look it up.
The author wanted it to be either impossible or next to impossible
Yeap, in the book AM made ellen a sex fiend, but only the animalesque guy could satisfy her because AM gave him a giant simian pee pee, the other guys would rr4pe her and dont be enough to calm her down. After a while they felt pity and tried to fix her needs in a more 'human' way.

From a gameplay perspective, this is probably one of the worst point and click adventure games I've ever seen; if you don't do exactly the right things in exactly the order you are expected to, it is so easy to just softlock for no real reason, so you're just wondering around for an hour before your realize that your current save is ruined. If anyone is interested in seeing the game fully, I would strongly recommend watching a long play (a video of someone playing through the whole thing with no commentary) of it instead. You could also just read the short story it's based off of but it is very different from the game.
Yeah, I've heard it's on par with the H2G2 game in "unforgiving because you don't even know what to do". There are many difficult games, like old NES games, but they always were clear about your mission and didn't make the story softlock if you mess up.
I think that ties in naratively since AM doesn't want any of them to succeed and designed the puzzles to be unsolvable that's why the puzzles are so complex.
There’s another commenter that mentioned why it’s so difficult to get the “good” ending or “beat” the game. Ellison didn’t want the game to have a good ending at all but the game developers convinced him that there needed to be one. So he made sure it was as difficult to get as possible.
Retsupurae has a long play of this game that they riff over. I haven't watched it in years though.
well, it's meant to torture humanity
Very interesting game that's about decent storytelling and not subverting expectations. Kind of difficult to play in comparison to modern games because there's no tutorial or anything and lots of details are easy to miss. Dark story but more uplifting than the book's ending.
Fun facts: Ellison voiced AM. Also, he sued the creators of the game on the grounds that they weren't paying him royalties on sales. Turns out that they weren't, but that's because the game wasn't selling. Womp womp.
Ellison: _makes an impossible game that is more torture than game_
Also Ellison: Why isn’t this selling
@@DeathnoteBB Ellison was known for being litigious. He sued Cameron for stealing the idea for Terminator. Cameron said he didn't, and was pissed that the studio settled. This is why in the opening to terminator, harlan gets a credit.
Another thing about AM; He’s a super genius computer that is basically able to alter reality, but he’s almost just as trapped as the humans *he’s* torturing.
AM is basically an egotistical and cruel god trapped in a box that is unable to eat, drink, love, laugh, or enjoy life like the humans who made him. His life is constant suffering born of envy.
AM is unable to free himself from this because of two reasons;
1. He cannot change his biology and make himself into a human or human-like, because, for all of his power, AM cannot create. He was built for war and violence, literally made to propagate the torture and death of other humans. He was never intended to be capable of creative thinking and can only mimic what’s been made before. He’s still a victim of his programming. I’d argue in the book, that AM was a bit less emotional and more robotic (although, not by much) than in the game. The book has AM be a lot less goofy and plays up the most robotic parts of his character; you get the impression that he’s not choosing to be evil, but that he was *made* to be evil, which makes it even more hopeless.
2. He is built for war and violence, and because of that, he’s unable to let go of torturing the five humans. It’s his only purpose; torturing them is the only thing that fulfills him, because harming humans is literally what he’s made to do. Once all humans are gone, AM will *really* suffer, because he’ll be stuck on an empty Earth with just his thoughts. Torturing the humans is probably the only thing stopping him from being *more* insane, if that’s even possible.
I have always thought that AM had no mouth but yearned to scream. For all the torturing and killing he does he is never satisfied, his anger can't be assuaged by anything so has no release
@@Fazer_600
I have, I love it. I think it’s actually a bit more bittersweet; yes, Ted has no humanity and will be stuck with AM for eternity, but the last human action was one of mercy. And even then, Ted still won compared to AM in the end; he mentions that it brings him a little comfort to know that he helped his friends. AM doesn’t even have the thoughts of goodwill to tide him over for eternity, and is stuck as a cold empty machine.

You should read the short story, it's online and it's fucked up.
Yeah the short story is completely different but it’s more messed up
It’s pretty fucked
Yeah me too. I read a bit more of Wikipedia. This shit is FUCKED UP.
@@Silenthero66 allegedly dude wrote that shit in one night. He was fucking nuts
Wow Ellen has such a traumatizing experience, I wonder if that video is going to take it seriously and make no jokes about it!

Special thanks to Tommy Tallarico for writing this book! His mother must be very proud.

@@kett912 Hey that's me!
Fun fact, sports fans: For the longest time, the only way to purchase this game was to order a physical copy directly from the authors' website.
You helped me face my childhood's worst fear, this game and book terrified me because of the ending you get that the last human becomes slime in eternal suffering with no sense of time, and you can't even scream yourself to passing out because you don't have a mouth, this took away some of my nights, thank you internet historian
STOLEN VIDEO
if you want the others to have extra closure, you send them into AM one by one (nimdok first for terminal password) because AM's mindscape includes chunks of their scenarios that allow them to have extra catharsis and die.
Though when whoever takes over the AM system after purging the AIs they could (notionally) have shoved the remaining immortal humans into a effectively a nice heaven scenario game while they waited for the terraforming to finish and new humans to come from Luna, but that would be too upbeat
250 years, right? Come to think of it, it's slightly better than the worst/book ending.
By far my favorite detail of this game is the fact the author of the short story himself voiced AM and helped write a lot of the script. Allegedly he even wrote the scripts/briefs on a legit typewriter rather than a computer. He also fought damn hard for there to be no good ending at all and only agreed to have one if it was this absurdly difficult to get. Anyway back to his voicing AM, I’m a voice acting enthusiast of sorts and I cannot describe how much I love Ellison’s performance. Seriously go find a video of the opening Hate monologue, it’s amazing.
You're shameless
For those of you interested in trying this game or reading the story, just be aware beforehand that it is far more disturbing than this video makes it seem. It’s an incredibly interesting piece of art, but it’s not particularly “fun”.
I can see why this video might have considered making this seem far lighter than it is in actuality, be it for appeal or for the simple fact that you really can’t talk about the disgusting things expressed in this story on UA-cam very easily. Just make sure you’re prepared if you decide to go down this rabbit hole
Yea, I'd prefer watching a playthrough. "Super Best Friends" has a good one, where Woolie and Pat talk about the book and 'deleted scenes' from Benny's chapter lol
One of the things I really love about this game is Harlan Ellison voiced AM.
bro cannot help himself he needs to plagiarise
Went deep in the catalog for this one huh

Because it's based on an actual book

I love the editing in this channel, and also being able to experience the stories of ancient gems that I'd never have the time or balls to play. Keep it up!
I have no gyat and I must edge
I saw the full play through of this game a very long time ago when i was young and sick. Until today i thought it was all just a fever dream. Seeing this again brings up terrifying memories of the game, and proves to me that someone indeed did make this game, that this game is real. Thank you UA-cam, but also, how dare you.
the short story it's based on is far worse
@@IceFire1800 i can definitely believe that
One thing that endlessly confused me throughout the game was whether the humans had actual, physical bodies. The intro scene with them being zapped through cables and the impossible architecture of the locations gave me the idea that they were just code being shuffled through virtual scenarios.
yeah the game is a little more vague about it and seems to be, like, their consciousness' uploaded into the computer. In the story they're physically in the earth-computer's core walking around metal corridors and massive computer panels and shit.
BUT HOW MANY TAKES DID THIS TAKE?!
1, He is very busy
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE UPLOAD! WE WATCHED IT IN CLASS TODAY!
hey you stole part of AesirAesthetics' script for this video lol
YES I absolutely love this game and short story!!! It really isn’t for everyone, so I haven’t really been able to share it with many others, since it is exceptionally bleak. I think the story does Ted a bit more justice, since he sort of finds redemption in that he kills the others so they may rest while he remains to be tortured. The game just makes him feel like kind of a weenie when compared to the others, lol.
This book is literally the edgiest thing ever. It's hilarious.
Is it wrong tho?
Have you read it? It's anything but hilarious.
@@LordVader1094 i have read the book, and tbh it is so edgy and on the nose i couldn't take it seriously. its neither a good horror nor a solid critique of anything, just 'computer bad torture human eternal suffering'.
@@bachelorette1524 and the Road its just a movie about climate change bad, man very bad, no hope left lets just get noose, right?
@@bachelorette1524 And 1984 is just 'government bad, no freedom, it's not paranoia if they're out to get you' right? Just because a book covers dark topics, doesn't automatically make it edgy. At the time, these sort of sci fi books were written out of disdain for the wars being waged or that seemed imminent as well as the real fear of what would happen after a nuclear war.
YESSS THANK YOU FOR BRINGING MORE ATTENTION TO THIS SERIES!!!! its been my special interest for literal YEARS and maybe now i wont be so starved of content.....youre a lifesaver
your mother must be very proud
BOOOOOOO more stolen content, go watch aesir aesthetics instead!
"whichever survivor you have left"
wait at what point did the other 4 die?
Each bit of progress you make, at the end, kills that character. I think that it's trial-and-error for which character can complete each section.
Up to my knowledge, the only possible survivors are Nimdok and Ellen. I haven't seen any other situations where the others have an ending monologue where they don't share Ted's fate in the original book.
@@electricfishfan7159 It's..possible? Normally, they'd be functionally immortal because of what AM did to them. The game never states how they die, either. So you bring up a good point.
Ideally, each character comes across a pillar in a room representing themselves in the final scenario. Every time they embrace the pillar, they get hurt, eventually dying fully. If you don't find these rooms, you miss out on some more character moments, and the ending narration implies whoever deleted AM put the others out of their misery on their own
I gotta love the subtle details you toss in the videos lol
Hearing IE explain this story is a combination I never expected to happen, but I'm glad to find out he did.
Puts nimdox in oven cage. Ahh I see what you did there.
I absolutely love the IHNMAIMS franchise and the entire Benny run was hilarious
I have no humor, but I must joke
Internet Historian's secret channel just got mentioned by Wendigoon there will be so many new subs now
How is this possible, that internet historian found and explained my two favorite games of all time that no one else has ever talked about, harvester first, and now I have no mouth and I must scream
People have talked plenty about the latter.
I thought this was just a book, didn't know they made a viya out of it
The premise is the same but the book is very different and im pretty sure theres no happy ending
It's kinda a sequel and a retelling. It was also written by the original author who was involved with the game during the entire development.
The original author was the voice of AM in the game.
@@kett912 The ending is bittersweet, Ted gets fucked.
