    Before buying a freeze dryer, perhaps research to find out more about the downside of the machine; some people have problems with their machine and it's big and heavy and hard to return!
    When trying to decide what to freeze dry you can start by asking why.
    Start by asking yourself this question. Why are you freeze drying food? Knowing this should help you decide what you should freeze dry first.
    I'm freeze drying because:
    Just to freeze dry leftovers?
    You want to make your own food for camping/backpacking?
    For if/when the SHTF?
    For a short term emergency?
    You have your own garden and want to freeze dry the food?
    You love Costco but don't have a family of 6?
    You are good at finding the food sales but only have 1 freezer?
    When you cook homemade chili just for yourself you make 10 gallons? Because you have 3 full freezers and are worried about power outages?
    If I knew then what I know now, I would have freeze dried things in a different order. Or maybe not, because I started freeze drying because we had 3 full freezers, I was thinking of getting another one, and I decided I should buy a walk-in freezer instead. I started looking into walk-ins and realized they were expensive to buy (even used ones) AND expensive to own and operate. Then I found out Harvest Right was making home sized freeze dryers. One of my first thoughts was "I like Mountain House!" I have used their food for backpacking almost 45 years and we even kept some in our travel trailer, for just in case.
    Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it.
    We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer, how to know if the food is dry, is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food, and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking!

    I’m just here for the jokes! 😂😂 I’m on a meat kick next. I have been doing candy for Christmas and it’s fun but I’m tired of it. I grated some cheese for lunch and my first thought was oh I could freeze dry the leftovers! Or make Mac and cheese and freeze dry that. Decisions decisions. 😊

    I've had some trouble with peas rehydarting no matter how long I let them sit. . There still edible but definety tougher in the centers. How was the texture of the peas 8n your potpie?

      What peas do you start with?
      I don't think we've ever had an issue with the peas, but some brands have been considerably better than others. (Or maybe I just have low standards? I did grow up eating my mom's cooking!) 🤣

    Question, someone told me you only get credit for the view if we allow the entire video to play without pausing or speeding up, is this true?

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  8 місяців тому +1

      I don't think that's correct. I know that it doesn't have to be watched all the way through, and as slow as I talk on a lot of the videos (in real life I speak much faster), I recommend watching my videos at 1.5x to 2x speed. 🤣
      YT shows me statistics for each video and the percentage of time a video is watched, and almost _no one_ watches all of _any_ video! And lots of people watch videos at faster than 1x speed.

      @@SchoolReports thanks. I was concerned I’ve been failing you. I know you’ve mentioned speeding and skipping things but want to make sure I’m not costing you anything by pausing or skipping. 🙂 (Although I’m not watching all like I used to, I do try)

    Looks good! Do you have a video for the crust you used?

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  10 місяців тому +1

      I forgot to mention it. It was just s a sheet of store bought puff pastry that I rolled out to the size of the pan and prebaked most of the way.
      The actual recipe (without some of the shortcuts I used in this one) came from America's Test Kitchen Cooking School online _Chicken Pot Pie Comfort Food Makeovers_ We used their course for our kids cooking classes 8 or 10 years ago.
      I think I would prefer just a regular pastry crust.

  • @MTeelTeach

    Is that a freeze-dried top?

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  9 місяців тому +2

      No. This time it was just some store bought boxed puff-pastry we had in the freezer. I wish I had made my own crust. I have freeze dried crust before, a few years ago. I show it a bit in an older video.

      🤣 I have to apologize for many of my older videos. In my focus to keep my older videos very short, most of my older, shorter videos are almost devoid of information! I tried hard to keep the videos down to less then 10 or 15 minutes, no matter what I had to cut out! (Like information!)

      @@SchoolReports I’m a former teacher and I appreciate the idea that you keep a “lesson” down to 15 minutes or less, but you also are trying to cover the topic completely. Where I would have 3-4 days to cover a topic (teaching time 15 minutes per day), you are putting it in one video, so it is going to be much longer. I think they are great!

      @@MTeelTeach Thanks!
      Time. Time to cover a subject the way they, sometimes, need to be covered. One of the things I loved about homeschooling our kids (we worked with a couple of charter schools geared towards homeschoolers) was that we could take all the time we needed/wanted on any lesson. I learned more during teaching than I ever learned while in school. I ended up teaching 3D Design and Printing (elective classes, of course) for about 3 years at 2 local 6th - 8th grade charter schools.

      @@SchoolReports We homeschooled our kiddo for a couple of years! I loved not having bells and overcrowded classrooms. And, like you said, you could take all the time you needed. We lived in a big homeschooling community in Austin, Texas then and had people that taught PE and extracurricular activities and electives. It was great!

      @@MTeelTeach My biggest surprise was from our teacher friends, both current and former teachers. It was universal from them - Homeschool if you can; get them out of the school system.
