Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.

Good videos! Good to see such a wonderful couple sharing clean and wholesome teachings on working with your garden and taking it in your home. God is blessing my family with your videos. Just pouring with the Holy Spirit in your simple messages. My wife wants to take freeze dried foods, fruits and veggies that we grow to our garden to the homeless shelter for snack time with the children’s program. Looks like God will be providing us with a freeze dryer so we can start our ministry. Your family has inspired us.

I am just simply having a nostalgic moment remembering Grandma's many one pot meals... Pot Pie being one of them! Wish I could keep her here forever as she was like a walking Recipe book... The cool part is that apart from the lard and biscuits, I think practically everything else can be freeze dried and you could make a semi-MRE package of Pot Pie. Not sure how it would turn out if you freeze-dried the finished meal, but that would be an interesting follow-up to see (especially to find out how the biscuits come back from freeze drying).

I recently did biscuits for Sausage and gravy. Cut them into 6ths, and just toss them in with the water while rehydrating the gravy and they come back quite well, soft on outside, and still a little fry and crunchy on inside. Tastes great and not all mushy!

I then found quite a few bags of cheddar in my freezer and threw them in with some shredded Velveeta. I powdered the Velveeta! I am doing some candy runs for the kids right now, but I'll continue with clearing out the freezer tomorrow.😁 I'm absolutely LOVING it and the fact that I can see what is in my freezer now. Haha!

Mine is coming in January. I bought one during the recent sale, so with the money saved from the cost, I purchased additional tools. Preserving food is my biggest reason. Decreasing the risk of losing food from freezer failure is the second. Having longer storage for food is the next. It will also make for easy meals if someone in the home is sick, injured, or even as we get older and may not able to do as much or afford to buy. We can buy $5 beef now, when in 5 years it may cost $10 for the same beef. It also makes it much more portable and use less storage space. I am very excited and blessed to have been able to purchase one. I hope it lasts my family a very long time.

Thanks to you guys, my sister and several other YT FDers, I bought a Large about 3 months ago and have had is running non-stop. Bought 10 extra trays, {15 total}, and have had every tray prepped with food and pre-freezing continuously. Have been vac sealing most my food in 1/2 Gallon jars, and some in Mylar, but so far I have 164 jars full, with dozens more quarts and pints.
Its so nice to kick back and feel at ease knowing I have years and years of food stored for whatever becomes of these crazy times we live in...{in just 3 months, and not slowing down yet} Every 2 weeks I go shop for sales and am trying new stuff to FD and store for later. Lately I've been making meals like Chili, Hamburger Stew, Biscuits and Gravy, Pasta and Meatballs and storing those in Mylar for the long long term.
    Thanks again.

We use a moisture meter to check the moisture content of our food prior to storing our freeze dried food. Surprisingly, after checking the moisture, we have placed numerous trays of food back into the freeze dryer and continued the drying process until they are completely dried. We no longer use our dehydrator, but still have it just in case. For long term storage we use mylar bags, but occasionally use vacuum sealed mason jars for shorter term storage. In my personal opinion, the freeze dryer was our best food storage purchase. We held off purchasing a freeze dryer until I watched your electric use video.

The savings you make was about $48 for the whole batch. If you would have grown it yourself, it would have been $50. At 30 cycles before an oil change, that would be approximately $1,500 of savings or approximately half the cost of the machine. So it will take 2-3 oil changes to break even. Then it is just savings from there. Thanks for the info.
I am drawn to the freeze-dryer for taste, nutritional retention, longevity of the food, storage space savings, freeing up freezer space while savings on the electricity to run the freezer. That is a lot of wins. I am saving for purchasing one and creating a space to have it. You make me more excited than ever for the day it arrives.

There are a lot of regional differences here as well. I grew up calling flapjacks/pancakes Hotcakes. Swedish pancakes are very similar to crepes. Biscuits are usually made without sugar so they go well with savory foods. Or can be eaten like a scone. Dumplings are cooked on top of quite a few different foods. Not necessarily a standard size, either. What you call biscuits we call cookies. Mostly, no matter what we call our food, it's all good! 😊

Not sure if you know but you can use your freeze dryer to vacuum seal canning jars. I have done that for years it reduces the O2 content to the point that oxygen absorbers are not required. Canning jars make it easy to find what you want on the shelf and are reusable. Another hack is to use a Pump and Seal to reseal jars that you are actively using.

There's still no way that I could afford one, but it might be a long-term goal because I am always having leftover vegetables because I'm only one person and I can only eat so much. I need a deep freezer more, but unless you have a garage or basement, that's impossible. So both are out of reach for me right now. For people who still want a dehydrator along with a freeze dryer, I would recommend getting a Sun Oven.

You can put about 2.5 lbs on each tray-depending on what the item is you are FD'ing. Best thing we ever invested in is the FD. Think we recouped out money within the 1st month of FD'ing- did nothing but proteins for this time period. Corn is awesome- great as a snack and salad topper. Been FD'ing what ever is on sale, Brussel sprouts, carrots, asparagus, mushrooms, green beans. 1 store had 2 lbs of blue berries on sale for a few weeks so nothing but berries- ended up poking them with a fork before FD'ing worked out great.
If anyone is on the fence about getting a Freeze Dryer- food waste is totally eliminated- any leftovers we get tired of into the freezer of straight into the FD.

After watching your videos on freeze drying about 50 times, I purchased the large FD unit and the premiere pump! I am stoked about the product that is produced and found this one to be particularly useful oh re-hydrating the food. Chicken pot pie is on the menu for dinner tomorrow night with my store bought frozen/freeze dried mixed veggies and home canned chicken!

I have dehydrated food that has lasted up to 10 years and still taste great. Most dehydrated food last well over a year. Probably closer to 5 to 10. Depending on the food. Not a year or less. Yes some can lose nutrients and taste, but most of us rotate our food and really don't have a problem. A lot of people can't afford or really need a freeze dryer. Plus my both my Excalibur dehydrators together do not cost more than a 1.50 together.

A freeze dryer is the best investment somebody can make in my opinion. You can make your own freeze dried dehydrated milk also, you can also make freeze dry cream, and freeze dried butter. You can also make freeze dried turkey.

That looks so delicious. 😋 I'm the same as Sarah - I prefer making drop biscuits. If that's too much parsley for you to use, I made my own greens powder to put into smoothies & drink with water in the morning. I dry dandelion, pea leaves, oregano, mint, kale & spinach with stevia leaves- basically any greens that will taste ok

I did the same thing...frozen mixed veggies did so well in the FD. And now we can just add them to soups or a stew. I also did a lot of tomato sauce because of ya'll. Just being able to use as a paste or sauce is a game changer. That dinner looks so good!! Can't wait to try this recipe.

It’s not about the $. Those of us that are awake realize the importance of long term food storage. It’s “food insurance “. Can’t live without food!
I’ve invested on over $100k in solar power. It had nothing to do with saving money nor “saving the planet”. It’s lifetime “power insurance “.
Self sufficiency is the future for those who have a sense of the future (hence homesteading).

As long as you blanche the vegs (sterilization safety), or steam them (full retention of nutrition and calories), then FD them - they are easy rehydrated meals with other cooked items. Grains cooked in your meal - then FD the meal - make easy rehydrated meals. Par-boiling (Indian "sala" grains) your grains and drying them (especially seed beans eventually turning into concrete pebbles) makes for easier later rehydrated cooked grains 90% of work is done earlier (Uncle Ben's Rice). Any meats are a must for sterilization, with sanitary cutting and handling of meat cuts, cooked meat meals, then FD. Meats for jerky are marinated and FD. Any herbs (with proper sterilization), should be blanched, then FD for ultimate long-term storage. Any storage in jars, vakpaks, or ziplocks is then easier to store. 5# big bag of whole onions, cut up and FD makes for 2 quarts (at most). Any further processing of foods into blender chunks or powders makes for even smaller storage options. And if you do vakpaking or ziplocks, then they can be laid flat in stacked packs, or even stored horizontally like books on a shelf ... or putting between those GLASS (!) canning jars (earthquake shaking) for ultimate pantry storage options.
