Nintendo acted in their right to take down AM2R and are putting out their official version that they built from the ground up in its place, yet they're still somehow not acting in goodwill of their customers, which in turn means this game shouldn't be supported? What kind of asinine, backwards thinking is that? We wanted a 2D Metroid, that's what we're getting. As far as the amiibos go (which are completely optional and only add a couple bonus features to an otherwise complete game), it's essentially DLC in shiny, tangible collectors form; it's like buying a cool toy, but it comes with the nifty ability to plug into the damn game. You guys fall into a group of people that are throwing a fit over Nintendo and the whole Metroid 2 thing and aren't going to buy this game out of spite. One of the better franchises in gaming is gonna get screwed because a whole group of people wanna suddenly put their collective foot down despite the company actually developing something we've clearly been wanting for years. Guys, Samus Returns is probably as important to Metroid rn as Awakening was to Fire Emblem. Although Prime 4 is still a thing, this game can make or break a future for 2D Metroid games.

I remember watching this video I wasn't a big Metroid fan, my only experience with the series was playing as Samus in Smash Bros and using her as my main. I figured I'd Samus returns because of the point you made in this video and I wanted get it to support the series for others considering how much this means to them. I Ordered it and Amazon took a few extra days to send it. That same week, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 came out for the Switch and I knew that's where I would spend most of my time playing. One day I came home to see both games had arrived, and while my excitement for Dragon Ball lead to me spending most of my weekend playing that, when I finally put it down, I turned to my 3DS and played Samus Returns. I ordered that game because of this video, and while I started off as not being a fan, I now see myself waiting for an announcement for Metroid Prime 4, or a New 2D game, or even a remake or release of older games like the Trilogy. Thanks for making this video and turning me into a Metroid fan. I know the sales for the game weren't great, but your video at least lead to one more person buying the game and becoming a fan.
I don't want to be accusatory or anything but the folks who said they would deliberately not buy the game out of spite over AM2R might be something to worry about. They might honestly cause the game to flop, or at least not sell as well.
I also don't think you should feel at all guilty if you buy used. If you don't care enough to sacrifice for a new launch day purchase, then the game probably isn't good enough anyway. LOL, but seriously. Attempting to financially support an unpopular series is something you can only do if you have disposable income. If the series dies, maybe you should look around more to see if there is already a series that fills that gap or is possibly better. Or you can make your own games in the genre that do what it is you wanted that dead/dying series to do. The most you can do for the series without a lot of money is talk about it, post about it, spread the word on why you think the series is so great. Create hype to convince more people to try it. Used games come from people who return or resell a game they don't care about keeping. If the game isn't good enough to keep for more than a couple years, then it might not be that good, or at least not a popular game design. I would not suggest supporting a bad series. If the creators make crappy games that no one buys, they should not be continued. I wish there were more Golden Sun games! I hate it when producers think something doesn't sell because the brand name is bad. Regardless of brand, I believe if you ship a mediocre game, it will get mediocre sales. Marketing is also a big part of it, but I'm already an informed consumer, so I hardly pay attention to ads.
The "disposable income" point is key. Arlo seems to think that most of his fans don't face trade-offs, and that the prospect of a future Metroid game about which Nintendo has promised nothing is worth an extra $30 in cash, not to mention $60 for a game that you might not value at full price. I played Golden Sun: Dark Dawn used, and it was fun, but not worth full price to me. Golden Sun is a perfect example of a franchise that started very strong, then had a kind of mediocre entry that sold poorly and as a result got thrown in the trash can. What both Arlo and Nintendo *refuse* to admit is that Nintendo is the party that screwed up by making crapfests like Other M and Federation Force, alternating between ignoring Metroid completely and producing an occasional placeholder game with nothing to recommend it. It's Nintendo's responsibility to show that they can still make a great Metroid game, not *our* responsibility to subsidize them until they manage to do it. Nintendo's a big company and it doesn't need handouts. I wouldn't expect Nintendo to act differently, but Arlo's new attitude is a big disappointment to me. I liked Arlo a lot before the Switch came out, and I think he had a unique critical voice that meant something. Now he's just one of the yes-men nodding his head at every decision Nintendo makes.

I was able to preorder the Special Edition somehow. I'm planning to do my best to track down those amiibo. Metroid, Zelda, and Splatoon are my current favorite franchises. I support those franchises and I always support those underdog games that I like and that I'm financially able to.
To all watching this: please, please, PLEASE do take Arlo's words to heart. If Samus Returns does indeed sell well, we could possibly see an increase in quality when it comes down to Prime 4, and other Metroid titles in the future. (TL;DR: please buy this fantastic, beautiful game. I want my Super Metroid remake.)
Not that I think it's perfect (the GBA titles play faster and way more fluid), I just believe they can't change anything without a massive outcry. Maybe a high resolution re-release with high definition sprites at most.
I think a Super Metroid remake in the style of a Prime title would kick ass. And they could keep the original theme song, but make it a little darker and/or creepier.
If you want to support Nintendo and play Super Metroid on the go, might I suggest buying a New 3DS? I mean, I wouldn't, but you can buy Super Metroid on the eShop right now. That's a safer bet than hoping Nintendo will reinvest profits into a franchise expansion rather than just, you know, enjoying the extra cash. As other people in your comment chain have said, Super Metroid does not need a remake. Any game that had the same feel while changing a lot of elements would be better served by having its own identity. Plus there's always Hollow Knight.

Another way to support games (and other kinds of media) is buying merchandise like action figures(figma,revoltech,nendoroids)statues/scales (amiibo and figs from Goodsmile co.,kotobukiya,alter...)and plushies. Even posters! I know that more often that not, this merch costs more than the games, but I think is a good option if you REALLY like a game and would like to own something more. Some games that have figures are: Metroid, The legend of Zelda,Pokémon, Kid icarus,Metal gear,Muramasa: the demon blade,Okami,Ace attorney,Danganroppa, Nier,Overwatch,Odin sphere,final fantasy..the list goes on. I was seriously thinking of skipping on the 3DS after the Switch launched, since the 3DS is on its way out, but after the reveal of Samus Returns, I simply cannot ignore the portable anymore! I just wanna say that I really appreciate this approach you took to this video. You didn't just speak as a fan, but a REALISTIC fan. You looked at pretty much all the angles (positive and negative), giving your opinion on the matter, but also leaving just enough room to let people make their own decisions without putting them on the defensive. I've been a casual viewer for a while, but screw it, I'm hitting that Sub button now! And I definitely plan to pick up Samus Returns. After seeing that "robot dude in the suit" through Smash Bros. for so many years, I decided to take the plunge with Fusion as my first Metroid game, and I've been into it ever since. I hope Metroid lives, it's one of my favorite platformers, I have 2 platformers I like better than 2D Mario, Metroid and Sonic(Classic). I'll buy it, or try. But I want to really focus on my Switch and I'm limited.......but...(sigh) I'll do it!
Already had this game preordered months ago. My body is ready. Couldn't get my hands on the amiibo though, since preorders were sold out on the 2 pack. Oh well, guess I'll have to until later to buy those when the hype dies down.

This is probably the best year for large amounts of good 3DS games. Ever Oasis, Miitopia, Samus Returns, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon, Minecraft, Fire Emblem Warriors, Pokemon Gold and Silver, Chicken Wiggle, the Mario Party collection, Mario GBA remake, and I think Super Mario Maker (it may have been a 2016 game). I really want to buy Samus Returns now to suport the series and get a new copy cheap, but I need to kill my backlog first. I may still be getting this year's new 3DS games next spring.
The thing is, it seems like there are so many great Nintendo games coming out / already out now, and as much as I would like to play this game and support it (since Metroid has become one of my favourite series in the past few years after going through MP2, Super and AM2R recently, and Fusion a while ago) I also want to wait a bit before I pick it up. More specifically, apart from Breath of the Wild at the start of the year, I've recently been playing ARMS and Sonic Mania, and the SNES mini comes out in a few weeks (which I managed to preorder, so that will be a whole lot of stuff to play through), and then there's Samus Returns of course, and also a new Professor Layton game (not sure if that's out on 3DS yet or not) which is part of another one of my favourite series, and then Mario Odyssey later in the year (which not only goes back to exploration but you can play as GRAND DAD for some reason), and Sonic Forces looks like it might be fun as well. And I guess apart from not wanting to spend a heap of money on games all at once, I won't have enough time to get through all of these with uni taking up a lot of my time. Nintendo, why you have so much good stuff coming out in the next few months? :P
Are people really complaining that they won't get this game because of ASMR that Nintendo blocked? Guys, you gotta remember why that game was made: a fan project that at least holds the goal of telling Nintendo they want more Metroid. Sure, the shutdown sucks, but this release is showing that Nintendo at least fucking listens to the fanbase. Here, a Metroid game! A remake of that same game they made, just like you wanted! If you still complain, then there's a good chance you didn't want an official Nintendo remake, but rather just wanted a free Metroid game on your PC.
Speaking as someone who has no interest in buying Samus Returns: You're right, I don't want an *official Nintendo remake* . I don't like remakes in general, and I think that Nintendo's recent obsession with them is unimaginative money-spinning. The Nintendo brand has been tarnished by the games they've made over the last five years, and the fact that Nintendo made this Metroid *product* doesn't enhance its value. What people liked about AM2R was that it demonstrated a love and understanding of classic Metroid that Nintendo hasn't had for a decade. It was about atmosphere and exploration, not martial arts moves and ugly faux-3D graphics. This release *does not* show that Nintendo "listens to the fans". It shows that Nintendo knows the power of their brands and will periodically release placeholder games for their underappreciated, undervalued franchises to get some extra cash and brownie points from uncritical fans like you. They're counting on the fact that Metroid fans are so desperate for more content that they'll treat a lame remake of a decades-old game like the second coming. By the way, a note for Metroid fans: Don't feel sorry for the creator of AM2R. He got lots of kudos, a gateway to jobs in the industry, and the satisfaction of knowing that tens of thousands of fans played his game. The reason he's so chill about the takedown is that he has nothing to lose from it personally. He may even have received some consideration for being so evangelistic about Samus Returns. Don't worry about him; worry about the future of this franchise in Nintendo's cynical, manipulative hands.
This video seems to be the perfect example of why you, Arlo, are so awesome. Good humour and above all positive and informative content. Plus, it's an awesome blue guy. What's not to like? In any case, this convinces me to get Metroid 2...and maybe a new 2DS just for the game to expand my 3DS collection.

Here's the thing: a point you raised briefly in the video was how uninformed purchases of games can have undesired effects. If the majority of a developer's customers pre-purchase a game, or simply buy it because they enjoy the series without considering if they'll actually like the game this can teach the developer 2 bad lessons. 1. They may be convinced that bad changes to a formula are actually good ones, resulting in the next installments having these same bad features eventually causing the customers to leave. 2. This one mainly goes for preorders. They may learn that a game is better sold through brand and marketing than through development, causing rushed, unpolished games to saturate the market because they know people will buy them without any real knowledge beyond a name. My stance will continue to be that caution is better than enthusiasm when it comes to handling money.
While your first point is completely valid, I don't think the second one applies here. Nintendo has never been a company to rush their games for money, sure they can make mistakes, but they're always honest mistakes, some not so good ideas from time to time, but this mistakes are never because of a rushed development cycle, in fact, they tend to delay games a lot, just look at BOTW.
I agree on point 2. Really i do. But as someone who has boycotted Ubisoft and EA games and i mean real boycot, no buying and not even pirating their shitty games, i can be sure of one thing about nintendo. They will NEVER rush a game with one of their main brands. Never happened and never will. Polish is the one thing they do vastly better than anyone else. Even better than Blizzard.
No they weren't, Mario Sunshine specifically took forever to develop! In fact, it's listed in the top 10 Most Delayed Games of All-Time list by some (www.complex.com/pop-culture/2011/11/the-10-most-delayed-games-and-whether-they-were-worth-the-wait/1 ). Just because they didn't get delayed over & over & over, doesn't mean they were "rushed." Some games have lengthy, years-long development cycles and just have to be released in the form they're in as to not wait any longer. Many developers end up wanting to add more & more to their games as development goes on, but just can't be given more time to do so. Wind Waker was delayed too! Don't believe me - www.ign.com/articles/2002/05/21/e3-2002-zelda-officially-delayed. Wind Waker had another long development cycle and was NOT rushed.
Corey D No, they were rushed. Both games were intended to have more content than they did. They may not have been rushed in the sense of Majora's Mask, which had a short dev time and was deliberately intended to be short (even if they played with the idea of adding more days early on) - but they were rushed in the sense that they delivered much less content than originally intended. Sunshine's lost content is less noticeable than WW's, but it is still a thing. Edit: On top of that, that listing is bullshit. They're counting the failed Super Mario 64 2 sequel, for the 64DD, as part of Sunshine's dev time. Sunshine would NEVER have functioned on the 64. That would be like saying The Lost Levels count as part of the development for Mario Bros. 2, even though they're totally different games. Taking elements from an unreleased game is NOT the same as delaying that original game.
For some reason i pre ordered Samus Returns from a shop from my country (Greece) and i think they didn't know when the game was coming out and instead sended it to me today September 14th instead of tomorrow and even when my dad told me it i thought he was doing a prank me...I WAS WRONG...the next hour after that i was trying to wake up but the next i started playing.But even if i write it somewhere no one is going to belive me...but still waiting for the Metroid amiibo.
Picked up the 2 amiibo pack in store today and am planning on getting the digital version of the game soon! I hope to see more 2D metroid games in the future!
I'll be getting it after work tomorrow. I haven't really played Metroid before (I have the Prime collection on my WiiU but haven't done much with it), but Samus Returns instantly grabbed my attention and I want to give it a shot.
Ngl, I used the wait for a sale mentality when it came to Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. I wanted to give the game a try since I genuinely felt the devs wanted to improve on the game. But at the same time, I just knew it wasn't going to be worth the $40 it was going for and I also knew people were going to ignore it since it had the words Sonic Boom. Sure enough, it went from $40 to $30 to $20, and that's when I finally bought it. While I enjoyed the game for what it was and still play it from time to time, even I felt it was just barely worth $20. I actually feel it's worth $15, but I guess you could pretend $5 of those dollars are going towards the DVD.

I pre-ordered the special edition of M:SR & the amiibo pack. I even got a new 3DS XL just for this release. After only playing for around 6 hours so far, I can say that it has been one of the best purchases I've made in gaming all year! Every part of the experience - from the packaging of the special edition, the surprise that the game cases' cover art gave me, the INCREDIBLE attention to detail on both amiibo, and of course the amazing gameplay & visual fidelity - has been worth every penny and even more, IMO.
I'm one of the 6 people who don't own a 3DS. I'm hoping to get a Samus Edition for my birthday, and if not I'll try and save up for one or the SNES Edition. I so badly want this game tho!
I'm also in that camp, but I'm in the smaller minority of owning a Switch without having a 3DS. When they announced this game, I was really excited, until I heard it was for 3DS. Kind of bummed that I couldn't get it on my Switch, so I guess I'll just be waiting for Prime 4 to get my Metroid fix.
I really REALLY want to help support the series real bad. I've been wanting a new start with Metroid for the longest time. I got Prime bundled with my GameCube but I was a child and didn't understand what was happening and only made it off the ship and that was it. The rest was Mario Sunshine. I wanted to give the series another C (figure that joke out) and see what I've been missing like with The Legend of Zelda starting with a rom of A Link to the Past. I wanted to play Prime again, try Super Metroid, etc. All of this just to help Samus Returns. This is a big year for me as a gamer. There's Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids, Spla2n, Sonic Mania and Forces, Superstar Saga DX (a remake of one of my favorite games on game boy advanced), Skyrim, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, Pokkén DX, Breath of the Wild on Switch, and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 for Switch to support a possible future release of Dragonball FightersZ on Switch. I am only one jobless guy surviving on financial aid until I can get a real job. First world problems I know but still... life is not easy if you're a gamer like me and possibly you (the reader). I really want to see this game succeed. There is an audience for Metroid and 2D Metroid. I want to play a part in this but my priorities lie elsewhere as selfish as it sounds. I'm flying from Australia to London in December and was going to pick this and Superstar Saga up around then to play on the plane trip. I still will do that but you've convinced me to pick up this game now instead and keep it ready to play for then!
All these sugestions speak as if Nintendo was holding Samus hostage at gunpoint, while telling you "If you want to ever see her again, bring me 2 billion dolars in digital currency to this account number". Also, I don't remember Nintendo ever loving Metroid. The first game was a rushed product, and the most famous one suffered multiple cancellation threats (then became critically acclaimed, and they simply jumped in to get the praise). As much as I think he kind of killed it with his Other M bullshit, the series still exists to this day thanks to Sakamoto having the same kind of obsession with Samus as the one Arlo jokes in the video.
I don't think there's any denying that Gunpei Yokoi kept Metroid alive in the 90s, and Yoshio Sakamoto is doing it now. I have my beefs with Sakamoto, but it's clear that he cares about Metroid, and I agree with you that the rest of Nintendo doesn't appreciate the franchise.

I remember watching this video I wasn't a big Metroid fan, my only experience with the series was playing as Samus in Smash Bros and using her as my main. I figured I'd Samus returns because of the point you made in this video and I wanted get it to support the series for others considering how much this means to them. I Ordered it and Amazon took a few extra days to send it. That same week, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 came out for the Switch and I knew that's where I would spend most of my time playing. One day I came home to see both games had arrived, and while my excitement for Dragon Ball lead to me spending most of my weekend playing that, when I finally put it down, I turned to my 3DS and played Samus Returns. I ordered that game because of this video, and while I started off as not being a fan, I now see myself waiting for an announcement for Metroid Prime 4, or a New 2D game, or even a remake or release of older games like the Trilogy.

How to support a game: Buy it and tell your friends.

I also don't think you should feel at all guilty if you buy used. If you don't care enough to sacrifice for a new launch day purchase, then the game probably isn't good enough anyway. LOL, but seriously.
Attempting to financially support an unpopular series is something you can only do if you have disposable income. If the series dies, maybe you should look around more to see if there is already a series that fills that gap or is possibly better. Or you can make your own games in the genre that do what it is you wanted that dead/dying series to do.
The most you can do for the series without a lot of money is talk about it, post about it, spread the word on why you think the series is so great. Create hype to convince more people to try it.
Used games come from people who return or resell a game they don't care about keeping. If the game isn't good enough to keep for more than a couple years, then it might not be that good, or at least not a popular game design.
I would not suggest supporting a bad series. If the creators make crappy games that no one buys, they should not be continued.
I wish there were more Golden Sun games! I hate it when producers think something doesn't sell because the brand name is bad. Regardless of brand, I believe if you ship a mediocre game, it will get mediocre sales. Marketing is also a big part of it, but I'm already an informed consumer, so I hardly pay attention to ads.
The "disposable income" point is key. Arlo seems to think that most of his fans don't face trade-offs, and that the prospect of a future Metroid game about which Nintendo has promised nothing is worth an extra $30 in cash, not to mention $60 for a game that you might not value at full price.
I played Golden Sun: Dark Dawn used, and it was fun, but not worth full price to me. Golden Sun is a perfect example of a franchise that started very strong, then had a kind of mediocre entry that sold poorly and as a result got thrown in the trash can.
What both Arlo and Nintendo *refuse* to admit is that Nintendo is the party that screwed up by making crapfests like Other M and Federation Force, alternating between ignoring Metroid completely and producing an occasional placeholder game with nothing to recommend it. It's Nintendo's responsibility to show that they can still make a great Metroid game, not *our* responsibility to subsidize them until they manage to do it. Nintendo's a big company and it doesn't need handouts.
I wouldn't expect Nintendo to act differently, but Arlo's new attitude is a big disappointment to me. I liked Arlo a lot before the Switch came out, and I think he had a unique critical voice that meant something. Now he's just one of the yes-men nodding his head at every decision Nintendo makes.

Metroid, Zelda, and Splatoon are my current favorite franchises. I support those franchises and I always support those underdog games that I like and that I'm financially able to.

Zeppelee Super Metroid is so good it doesn't need a remake.
Not that I think it's perfect (the GBA titles play faster and way more fluid), I just believe they can't change anything without a massive outcry. Maybe a high resolution re-release with high definition sprites at most.
I think a Super Metroid remake in the style of a Prime title would kick ass. And they could keep the original theme song, but make it a little darker and/or creepier.
If you want to support Nintendo and play Super Metroid on the go, might I suggest buying a New 3DS? I mean, I wouldn't, but you can buy Super Metroid on the eShop right now. That's a safer bet than hoping Nintendo will reinvest profits into a franchise expansion rather than just, you know, enjoying the extra cash.
As other people in your comment chain have said, Super Metroid does not need a remake. Any game that had the same feel while changing a lot of elements would be better served by having its own identity.
Plus there's always Hollow Knight.

Another way to support games (and other kinds of media) is buying merchandise like action figures(figma,revoltech,nendoroids)statues/scales (amiibo and figs from Goodsmile co.,kotobukiya,alter...)and plushies. Even posters! I know that more often that not, this merch costs more than the games, but I think is a good option if you REALLY like a game and would like to own something more.
Some games that have figures are: Metroid, The legend of Zelda,Pokémon, Kid icarus,Metal gear,Muramasa: the demon blade,Okami,Ace attorney,Danganroppa, Nier,Overwatch,Odin sphere,final fantasy..the list goes on. Great video Arlo,as always.

I just wanna say that I really appreciate this approach you took to this video. You didn't just speak as a fan, but a REALISTIC fan. You looked at pretty much all the angles (positive and negative), giving your opinion on the matter, but also leaving just enough room to let people make their own decisions without putting them on the defensive. I've been a casual viewer for a while, but screw it, I'm hitting that Sub button now!
And I definitely plan to pick up Samus Returns. After seeing that "robot dude in the suit" through Smash Bros. for so many years, I decided to take the plunge with Fusion as my first Metroid game, and I've been into it ever since. Here's hoping this game is a success!

My shop told me the 2packs were canceled by nintendo. They will only be sold separately. Not sure if that is global or just here in europe.

This is probably the best year for large amounts of good 3DS games. Ever Oasis, Miitopia, Samus Returns, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon, Minecraft, Fire Emblem Warriors, Pokemon Gold and Silver, Chicken Wiggle, the Mario Party collection, Mario GBA remake, and I think Super Mario Maker (it may have been a 2016 game).
I really want to buy Samus Returns now to suport the series and get a new copy cheap, but I need to kill my backlog first. I may still be getting this year's new 3DS games next spring.
The thing is, it seems like there are so many great Nintendo games coming out / already out now, and as much as I would like to play this game and support it (since Metroid has become one of my favourite series in the past few years after going through MP2, Super and AM2R recently, and Fusion a while ago) I also want to wait a bit before I pick it up.
More specifically, apart from Breath of the Wild at the start of the year, I've recently been playing ARMS and Sonic Mania, and the SNES mini comes out in a few weeks (which I managed to preorder, so that will be a whole lot of stuff to play through), and then there's Samus Returns of course, and also a new Professor Layton game (not sure if that's out on 3DS yet or not) which is part of another one of my favourite series, and then Mario Odyssey later in the year (which not only goes back to exploration but you can play as GRAND DAD for some reason), and Sonic Forces looks like it might be fun as well. And I guess apart from not wanting to spend a heap of money on games all at once, I won't have enough time to get through all of these with uni taking up a lot of my time.
Nintendo, why you have so much good stuff coming out in the next few months? :P
Are people really complaining that they won't get this game because of ASMR that Nintendo blocked? Guys, you gotta remember why that game was made: a fan project that at least holds the goal of telling Nintendo they want more Metroid. Sure, the shutdown sucks, but this release is showing that Nintendo at least fucking listens to the fanbase. Here, a Metroid game! A remake of that same game they made, just like you wanted!
If you still complain, then there's a good chance you didn't want an official Nintendo remake, but rather just wanted a free Metroid game on your PC.
Or maybe people don't want to support a company when they're the only major company that handles fan-games quite the way they do.
Then those people should be boycotting all of Nintendo's games and products, not just this one.
Speaking as someone who has no interest in buying Samus Returns: You're right, I don't want an *official Nintendo remake* . I don't like remakes in general, and I think that Nintendo's recent obsession with them is unimaginative money-spinning. The Nintendo brand has been tarnished by the games they've made over the last five years, and the fact that Nintendo made this Metroid *product* doesn't enhance its value.
What people liked about AM2R was that it demonstrated a love and understanding of classic Metroid that Nintendo hasn't had for a decade. It was about atmosphere and exploration, not martial arts moves and ugly faux-3D graphics.
This release *does not* show that Nintendo "listens to the fans". It shows that Nintendo knows the power of their brands and will periodically release placeholder games for their underappreciated, undervalued franchises to get some extra cash and brownie points from uncritical fans like you. They're counting on the fact that Metroid fans are so desperate for more content that they'll treat a lame remake of a decades-old game like the second coming.
By the way, a note for Metroid fans: Don't feel sorry for the creator of AM2R. He got lots of kudos, a gateway to jobs in the industry, and the satisfaction of knowing that tens of thousands of fans played his game. The reason he's so chill about the takedown is that he has nothing to lose from it personally. He may even have received some consideration for being so evangelistic about Samus Returns. Don't worry about him; worry about the future of this franchise in Nintendo's cynical, manipulative hands.

Here's the thing: a point you raised briefly in the video was how uninformed purchases of games can have undesired effects. If the majority of a developer's customers pre-purchase a game, or simply buy it because they enjoy the series without considering if they'll actually like the game this can teach the developer 2 bad lessons.
1. They may be convinced that bad changes to a formula are actually good ones, resulting in the next installments having these same bad features eventually causing the customers to leave.
2. This one mainly goes for preorders. They may learn that a game is better sold through brand and marketing than through development, causing rushed, unpolished games to saturate the market because they know people will buy them without any real knowledge beyond a name.
My stance will continue to be that caution is better than enthusiasm when it comes to handling money.
While your first point is completely valid, I don't think the second one applies here.
Nintendo has never been a company to rush their games for money, sure they can make mistakes, but they're always honest mistakes, some not so good ideas from time to time, but this mistakes are never because of a rushed development cycle, in fact, they tend to delay games a lot, just look at BOTW.
I agree on point 2. Really i do. But as someone who has boycotted Ubisoft and EA games and i mean real boycot, no buying and not even pirating their shitty games, i can be sure of one thing about nintendo. They will NEVER rush a game with one of their main brands. Never happened and never will. Polish is the one thing they do vastly better than anyone else. Even better than Blizzard.

No they weren't, Mario Sunshine specifically took forever to develop! In fact, it's listed in the top 10 Most Delayed Games of All-Time list by some (www.complex.com/pop-culture/2011/11/the-10-most-delayed-games-and-whether-they-were-worth-the-wait/1 ). Just because they didn't get delayed over & over & over, doesn't mean they were "rushed." Some games have lengthy, years-long development cycles and just have to be released in the form they're in as to not wait any longer. Many developers end up wanting to add more & more to their games as development goes on, but just can't be given more time to do so. Wind Waker was delayed too! Don't believe me - www.ign.com/articles/2002/05/21/e3-2002-zelda-officially-delayed. Wind Waker had another long development cycle and was NOT rushed.
Corey D No, they were rushed. Both games were intended to have more content than they did. They may not have been rushed in the sense of Majora's Mask, which had a short dev time and was deliberately intended to be short (even if they played with the idea of adding more days early on) - but they were rushed in the sense that they delivered much less content than originally intended. Sunshine's lost content is less noticeable than WW's, but it is still a thing.
Edit: On top of that, that listing is bullshit. They're counting the failed Super Mario 64 2 sequel, for the 64DD, as part of Sunshine's dev time. Sunshine would NEVER have functioned on the 64. That would be like saying The Lost Levels count as part of the development for Mario Bros. 2, even though they're totally different games. Taking elements from an unreleased game is NOT the same as delaying that original game.

For some reason i pre ordered Samus Returns from a shop from my country (Greece) and i think they didn't know when the game was coming out and instead sended it to me today September 14th instead of tomorrow and even when my dad told me it i thought he was doing a prank me...I WAS WRONG...the next hour after that i was trying to wake up but the next i started playing.But even if i write it somewhere no one is going to belive me...but still waiting for the Metroid amiibo.
It's not unrealistic. Errors like this happen somewhat frequently even with a big store like amazon.

I'll be getting it after work tomorrow. I haven't really played Metroid before (I have the Prime collection on my WiiU but haven't done much with it), but Samus Returns instantly grabbed my attention and I want to give it a shot.
Ngl, I used the wait for a sale mentality when it came to Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. I wanted to give the game a try since I genuinely felt the devs wanted to improve on the game.
But at the same time, I just knew it wasn't going to be worth the $40 it was going for and I also knew people were going to ignore it since it had the words Sonic Boom.
Sure enough, it went from $40 to $30 to $20, and that's when I finally bought it. While I enjoyed the game for what it was and still play it from time to time, even I felt it was just barely worth $20. I actually feel it's worth $15, but I guess you could pretend $5 of those dollars are going towards the DVD.

I pre-ordered the special edition of M:SR & the amiibo pack. I even got a new 3DS XL just for this release. After only playing for around 6 hours so far, I can say that it has been one of the best purchases I've made in gaming all year! Every part of the experience - from the packaging of the special edition, the surprise that the game cases' cover art gave me, the INCREDIBLE attention to detail on both amiibo, and of course the amazing gameplay & visual fidelity - has been worth every penny and even more, IMO.
I'm one of the 6 people who don't own a 3DS. I'm hoping to get a Samus Edition for my birthday, and if not I'll try and save up for one or the SNES Edition. I so badly want this game tho!
I'm also in that camp, but I'm in the smaller minority of owning a Switch without having a 3DS. When they announced this game, I was really excited, until I heard it was for 3DS. Kind of bummed that I couldn't get it on my Switch, so I guess I'll just be waiting for Prime 4 to get my Metroid fix.
smokinjoe43 I sold my 3DS (at the time I barely ever played it) to get a Switch. Love my Switch, but I regret selling my 3DS.
I really REALLY want to help support the series real bad. I've been wanting a new start with Metroid for the longest time. I got Prime bundled with my GameCube but I was a child and didn't understand what was happening and only made it off the ship and that was it. The rest was Mario Sunshine. I wanted to give the series another C (figure that joke out) and see what I've been missing like with The Legend of Zelda starting with a rom of A Link to the Past. I wanted to play Prime again, try Super Metroid, etc. All of this just to help Samus Returns. This is a big year for me as a gamer. There's Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids, Spla2n, Sonic Mania and Forces, Superstar Saga DX (a remake of one of my favorite games on game boy advanced), Skyrim, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, Pokkén DX, Breath of the Wild on Switch, and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 for Switch to support a possible future release of Dragonball FightersZ on Switch. I am only one jobless guy surviving on financial aid until I can get a real job. First world problems I know but still... life is not easy if you're a gamer like me and possibly you (the reader). I really want to see this game succeed. There is an audience for Metroid and 2D Metroid. I want to play a part in this but my priorities lie elsewhere as selfish as it sounds. I'm flying from Australia to London in December and was going to pick this and Superstar Saga up around then to play on the plane trip. I still will do that but you've convinced me to pick up this game now instead and keep it ready to play for then!
All these sugestions speak as if Nintendo was holding Samus hostage at gunpoint, while telling you "If you want to ever see her again, bring me 2 billion dolars in digital currency to this account number".
Also, I don't remember Nintendo ever loving Metroid. The first game was a rushed product, and the most famous one suffered multiple cancellation threats (then became critically acclaimed, and they simply jumped in to get the praise). As much as I think he kind of killed it with his Other M bullshit, the series still exists to this day thanks to Sakamoto having the same kind of obsession with Samus as the one Arlo jokes in the video.
I don't think there's any denying that Gunpei Yokoi kept Metroid alive in the 90s, and Yoshio Sakamoto is doing it now. I have my beefs with Sakamoto, but it's clear that he cares about Metroid, and I agree with you that the rest of Nintendo doesn't appreciate the franchise.

And other people wish BotW was a Wii U exclusive. And I'm still waiting for Crysis on the GBA. :-D
