Mom told me grandpa had a choice of payment during the depression, a quarter a week or a bushel of corn. He would alternate weekly. Grandma was amazing, she would make quilts out of flour sacks, old pajamas, old curtains or any other cloth. I remember she collected strings of all kinds. I asked her why and she smiled and said " A girl never knows when she may need a piece of string". I sure miss my family and our lost ways. It was a different world for sure

My mother in law said the same thing I believe she was born in 1918. They had a small homestead and grew everything had enough for themselves and the occasional hobo that came to the door wanting food. I loved hearing her stories and miss her so much. Oh I still have some of the Ration coupons they got back then. Anna In Ohio

But I know that healthy food is my main health ingredient... So starting small with my own little city garden (I live in the city in the middle of crowded The Netherlands), in a rental home.

The plandemic, and now the planned drought. The corrupernment created all these events. They couldn’t care about you or I or the kids. We all need to come together as a community and start growing our own foods. And learn where we can get a fresh water supply.

You know, in rural România , we preserve fresh vegetables and fruits every autumn ...it feels kind of weird to think that in America this is not normal... every household plants vegetatables and in the autumn we preserve them. We eat from them every winter and last sometimes a up to a year. We grow even our own condiments (thyme, bay leaves...) and greens for teas and such.... you can't compare the taste to the supermarket food. I personally buy so little from the supermarket. We have hens so we don't eat eggs from the supermarket, some neighbours have cown so we buy milk from them... it's pretty cool actually 😁 anyway, lovely video, i really enjoyed it!

This was once common in America, not that long ago. My great grandparents did this all the time. It only took 2 or 3 generations of factory farming and "convenience" to make us forget (11:45). But we are remembering now, thanks to great videos like this!

@@TheSeasonalHomestead I am also from Romania and I can confirm you that it’s true. I live in a neighborhood when we all share the same garden. My dad grows quails, One of my neighbours is a beekeeper so we take all our honey from him. My dad has a friend who grows apples and cherries so every time my dad is helping him with something he is giving us lots of cherries and apples! My grandma is making jam and tomato sauce every single autumn so she gives everyone in our neighbourhood a couple of jars and my grandpa is growing chickens, rabbits, ducks and a cow. Oh and we also take water from a nearby spring.
And sorry for the way I expressed myself and for the grammar, but I'm not so good at English!

At least here in Germany food in the supermarkets is comparably cheap: preserving makes little sence from a economical point of view.
But growing your own vegetables especially under the Romanian sun will bring you so much more tasteful produce ... than some unriped picked tomato in a Dutch glass house. To have this fresh taste of summer and preserve it would be rather a motivation for me.

I was born in Asia in 1985. I find it amazing that even though you are in the United States and I am in China, we have the same way of making tomato sauce. When I was a child, there was no tomato sauce in the supermarkets in northern China where I lived, so we usually made our own. The process we used was the same as the blogger's. A grateful spirit is good.
"The more perfect you perceive them, the more pressure they put on themselves." Perception is a personal experience. We have no control over other people's perceptions so why go on about people's perceptions about other people? LoL. It's not people's perceptions per se that affects other people, but their actions.
I do agree that it is a problem when people worry too much about what other people think of them, but they are the ones putting that pressure on themselves--unless those people have a direct influence/effect on their life. I almost could not believe that. Because we always prepped them and ate them fresh in abundance. She told me her parents did buy jars so nothing would go to waiste. Of course that was smart of her parents seen their sercumstances. But It shows it's not normal for a lot of people anymore to eat fresh vegetables. We almost forget how prepping is done.

With global warming, the coronavirus and the economy being what it is right now, we all may need to be doing this. I think everyone should know how to grow their own food because in years when major agricultural areas lose all their crops due to weather or natural disasters, there may not be enough for all at the grocery store.

My dear. Hat's off to you! We also have a 4.6 acre homestead on our art studio property with 9,600 SF of veggie gardens. Our little farm is extremely well organized to maximize production. Anything planted on our property as a tree, shrub, or plant is edible. We preserve about 95% of our foods, and as pescetarians we occasionally eat fish that we can catch off of our houseboat (yacht,) and raise "The Girls" for our eggs at the farm.
I'm 63 and my significant other, a carpenter and gardener is 57. This lifestyle looks glamorous to many people, however they must be willing to work long days, often 12+ hours DAILY. I took an early retirement this year to focus fully on our homestead and work a little less! Enjoy your family's "special" time together and may The Holy Father send his angels to keep you safe, healthy, and joyous; always.

its easy, all that is preserved in shop. people do so many mistakes, like keep jars or cans in fridge, when its closed, and in shop its on shelf only not in fridge, you can do same. when you open it, keep in fridge. buns or chips in bag, simply bend edges to centre like triangle, push out air with hand, then roll top to down and secure with laundry clipper, same you can do on coffee and will last open for week in cold dark cabinet before mold will eat it, when you dont do that it will be 2 days

You are spot on with your concept of linking good health to preparing food from scratch. . When I was around 50 I was told that my blood numbers were so off the chart that I would probably not live another 5 years. My triglyceride level was so high it could no longer be measured. My A1c listed me as having type 2 diabetes. I was overweight and my blood pressure was too high. Instead of attempting to deal with the issues through medications, I decided to dramatically change the food I was eating. This meant that I would have to learn how to cook it myself. Unlike your situation I had less kitchen floor space and counter space. Also, I did not have a crew of kitchen helpers. Your video demonstrates the labor intensive effort involved in preparing food from raw ingredients. I call it prep work or sous chef work. My solution was to redesign our kitchen around preparing quality meals, Instead of having kitchen helpers, counter space, and floor space, I filled my kitchen with industrial equipment. The equipment takes care of the prep work necessary to prepare high quality meals from raw ingredients. The result of my efforts is, now that I am 74 years old, both my wife's health and my health is much better than it was when I was in my 50s. My weight, blood pressure, A1c, triglyceride and cholesterol levels are all within normal parameters.
This is my kitchen. It allows us to cook fine restaurant quality and healthy meals at home. The equipment allows the process to be time and cost effective.

Oh, this is SO helpful! Congratulations on the new home (very nice) and land (absolutely beautiful). An insane amount of work, no doubt. This video is SO needed today, especially for families (i.e. mamas) who need to know they have options that aren't in the grocery store "food" aisles. 🥰

Agreed 100% Lots of options, over and above being "forced" to spend more for inflated grocery prices.

Hi there, i wanted to just say how much i love to watch this kind of a functioning family. I am also a mother and a wife and i see diferences between us. Without your husbands help and appreciation all of this couldnt happen. You, as a wife and mum are showing with all of this the greatest love for your family. It is definetly a teamwork and i love to see that❤ wishing you all the best from Slovakia

For real! It's nice to see that in our children too. Since they have a sense for the work involved, they make darn sure to eat every last drop of food on their plates.

I think this is amazing! As a Christian, I know that in the near future the issue of buying and selling will be a very serious one for those who choose to be obedient to God, so now is the time to grow your own food and to preserve food as well. (Revelation 13:16-17 KJV)

Amazing I understand it’s a lot of work and dedication to your harvest. I try to put everything I grow away too. I know the late nights and tired days. But the pride you feel is the best feeling ever. The food tastes better and it’s so good for yourself and your family. You have a beautiful family. Take care. ☺️😉

We are currently building our house, we too had hoped to have it built before now, but here we are trying to build a log cabin ourselves and plant and soon the harvest will begin. Thanks for the inspiration to help keep me motivated.

Just touches my heart how much dedication and love this mother puts into making sure her family eats. So many women today give up so easily and want to take the easy route and they lose sight of all the good it comes of it and all of the rewards from the hard work. Nothing is ever easy but sometimes the hard stuff refines you like a fine blade that has been worked through the fire.

This is really heartwarming to see you and your family growing and preserving food. Thanks for showing to us and the world where many have taken food for granted, wasted food or even unaware of how much work behind growing the vegetables etc to end up on the dining table. May you and your family have great blessings and enjoy good health through generations!
