The first time I watched some of Gary's videos a couple yrs ago the words "over qualified" came to mind. The information he shares and the way he delivers it is awesome.
I never comment on videos, but jesus christ, thank you Gary for all the information you put out. Seriously incredible, mush love. Also definitely interested by that filtered air concept!
thanks for watching and following along! Once I have it dialed in I will spread the word! So much new space and room to do ideas now Im very excited for the next few years 🙏🏻🍄❤️
Hi Gary, thanks very much for your sharing, this filter is single use or reusable. if single use is what you should buy only the filter or buy the complete kit.?.
Also peristaltic pump-why is that necessary at all? That filter bottle is made such that you just have to pour everything in there at once and just turn on the vacuum.
You could also if willing to wait use your vacuum sealer and use same setup as ya media extractor no ? Using air inlet with .1micron syringe filter scaling down....
@Fresh from the Farm Fungi yea for sure with check valve after filter b4 jar so can just remove it when jar filled I think if it's blocking up too much then your lc messy anyways I've been using brf syrup and glucose and it's so clean to start with should give it a try im even doing .5g nutritional extract per 1L but I think peptone would be cleaner
@Fresh from the Farm Fungi also mate your work I have been following for couple years now and thank you for your videos so much help got any ideas for mushroom mites ? Kinda hard to find much info about them and only a problem couple month of the year I am thinking maybe they have followed me from growing plants
@@shauncobb6 try nematodes and ladybugs yes I am also a horticulturist and have to deal with insects - the best way is to prevent but now the battle has begun! 👍😎
@Fresh from the Farm Fungi Chur too true thats a good idea im winning but hard to iradicate lol so springs up now and then I know in commercial situations they use piperonyl butoxide as 1day withholding
Seems more open to contaminate really just my opinion I’m sure your good at what you do but extra hoses pumps ect lot of extra steps and u still have to open media bottle so all that just to be at same risk of standard lc methods with pc if not worst really.
This is how they do it in industry. They sterilize the plumbing and gigantic vat (tm) with bleach water and then pump that all out and replace it with filtered media water.
Hey Gary thank you for sharing new ways to make LC. I remember how hard it was to keep my daughter asleep and my wife happy after she was born. Noise was a big complaint. Lol
2.5g of peptone in 500ml is a huge amount is it not? or does the filtering remove most of it? i've added 0.5g in 1,000ml of LC & my mycelium grew so fast it started growing mats in the jar after just a few days.
@@FreshfromtheFarmFungi Try 5% Dextrose with 0.08% soy Peptone. Anything above 0.1% slows down the growth. For 500ml 475g destilled water 25g dextrose +0.4g Soy Peptone You can also buy a slready sterilized 5% glucose solution with injection port from for example braun. There is enough air in the water, to support ~2 weeks worth of mycelium growth. A good methode is to sterilize a peptone solution and inject 0.08% soy peptone into the glucose solution.
Seems more complicated than necessary. If you have to sterilise the jars you might aswell do it with the LC inside. Okay, you need to let it cool, but that's just something to plan for. Also.... Peptone.... it must be cheaper over the pond.... it's ridiculously expensive here!
Hey Gary happy new years, hope all is well. Quick question about glass petri dishes, do you have a specific brand you would recommend? I need to get some reusable glass petri dishes but want to make sure I buy the right ones that are built well and the lids fit good.
@@FreshfromtheFarmFungi i know that, but why didnt you have any ? Doesnt it slow down the lc growth ? I am asking because I have a few jars with syringe filters but I have to be careful while agitating them manually to avoid getting the filter wet.
he is talking about the lid for the filtered media bottle lid. adding the syringe filter will allow your mycelium to breath (you will need to re-sterilise your lid though) ua-cam.com/video/9TXBiLIMsu4/v-deo.html

Hey man! I’ve watched so so many of your videos and they’re all so informative!! (Your mushroom breeding videos are my favorite) I’m a cadet at USAFA right now and I’m trying to start a mycology club soon. Have you tried using food waste (and possibly wood waste) to grow mushrooms?? I have an idea on using our dining halls waste, composting it, or sterilizing it to use as spawn starter or substrate. Do you think that idea is plausible for something like Lions Mane or a more popular edible mushrooms?
Composting woodchips with composted food waste cant work for woodloving mushrooms such as lionsmane or if it does it'll be very difficult and low yeild. Instead what you should do is compost food waste mixed with straw, grass cutting, wood shaving/chips and/or manure. This'll create a mix ideal for button mushrooms or even almond agaric and other tertiary decomposers. Composted materials is for tertiary decomposers mostly, which are your mushrooms that grow from soil or even manure, where as most gourmet mushrooms are primary decomposers and require not decomposed woodchip/substrate, although they can but wont produce the best yield and will most likely cause contam issues if not steriled properly
it may work for secondary decomposers (agaricus, stropharia etc.). I have used spent grains from a distillery for spawn but it was very time sensitive. If you want to grow lions mane, look for local woodworkers who use raw hardwoods like table manufacturers or people who sell big slabs and you can grow on that relatively cheaply 👍🍄❤️
yes but not a full scale retort autoclave which the volume can produce. It will make sense in time I am developing a whole system this is just scaled down to show on a bench top.

"Yer a wizard, Gary" 🧙♂🪄👍
It is so cool how the pharmaceutical laboratory equipment and techniques are filtering down to the mycological production methods...really awesome!!
You don’t know how much money you just saved me. I’ve been buying mine at $15 a pop
I worked in AI and they had one of those pumps. I believe I still have some of the silicon hose they used. Worn a bit where the pump wheels went.

As always great content Gary. Looking forward to hearing more about your bioreactor project.... Mush love dude!
Do we need the rolling pump? The filter should keep contam out of finish product right?

I think I’ll just use the pressure cooker!!!!!!!
What!! Can't wait to see this.

the point is to scale this
@@FreshfromtheFarmFungi so to sterilize, say 50 L using a single filter? Well yeah if it works that way that would be good.

I like your shirt.

this might work as well maybe having one filter for liquid and one for air exchange as it might get clogged easily

no boiling required the filter will take any contaminants out 👍

If I up grade pump to the lab one you have listed, will I still need the peristaltic pump?
no it is only optional you will just need to scoop the media into the top reservoir before it filters it all continuously

Why not use a syphon instead of a special pump?
@@NotaFEDjed you can use a syphon at this scale but the peristaltic pump is a closed system so it can be scaled up in a sterile environment

the white lid can have a syringe filter and injection port put in the top so they can be used like the mycology lids on our ETSY
