Today we show you the steps it takes to make your own custom led lights. We used this same process on the 240z Datsun LED Tail lights as well. Tim breaks down where he purchased his items and the techniques he used to accomplish his goals for the BMW 2002.
Wow an actual working signal light on a BMW, never seen that before hahahaha
Ragnarok043 you laughed too hard at your own joke lol. Good joke but still... haha
lol whenever I see one of those use their blinkers, I just asume they are up to no good and don't want to get pulled over.
Just a heads up, you add the resistor on the POSITIVE side of the LED series, not the negative. The resistor drops the current flow through the series, it's doing nothing on the negative side other than taking up room. Yes it works, but you're over powering the LEDs and reducing their life span and that's not counting any kind of voltage spikes you may incur in the BMW's electrical system.
You also could have combined each series set in parallel with each other and got away with a single resistor (25% of 220ohm) without an issue. I would run no more than 5 sets in parallel. Or could have stuffed the board full of LEDs (leaving space for resistors) if you wanted maximum brightness.
I'm a BMW guy ( own a e24,e28, e34) but loved watching the 240z build! Y'all have great videos. And I love how yall put the Ads at the end of the videos. Yall the real MVP'S!
Thank God you guys posted again. I've been randomly wrapping shit in the garage with carbon fiber and I have no clue what I'm doing.
you guys and jimmy oakes are the best two channels on youtube
Check out Goonzquad, B is for Build, and throtl as well
k2ski77 there good but just a level below these guys and jimmy imo
Love the amount of custom stuff you do on this channel, from working with composits to electronics.
Bandito so chill you don't need a rage room.
You guys managed to turn something absolutely boring like this into an absolutely fun video. Can't get enough of the three banditos :)
cant deny. smashing stuff does relax sometimes.
Right on time cus I’m on lunch at work !😎
Great video!!!! They came out great and I learned a lot, the one thing I would do was put a diffuser in between the LEDs and plastic so you don’t see the individual bulbs to keep it more clean looking but that’s just my preference. Keep up the good work y’all love everything on the channel.
You might want to diffuse the light a little more than that. A perfect solution is that white backing paper they use for vinyl cut sticker application paper. I put a layer of that over my light painting flashlight to get rid of the hotspots. Just a thought.
DUTCHswift you got any pics or a video of the light diffuser?
the short leg side also has an interrupted lip lens thingy... just for those that cut first and check later.. its not a total loss. (or to check when the lights dont come on)
Love the quality from this channel, keep up the good work!
Awesome!
I want to see the ones for the Z
Keep it up
love from Costa Rica
You don't have to bend the legs on the led. The board you are using have pads of copper on the back. Just bridge the pads across with solder to make the connection.
So Greg is the sound guy, Tim is the lights, and Xavier is the video. Solid crew haha. What happened to the easter eggs?
not wanting to hate on this, your work is meticulous, but I couldn't help notice how much brighter the original cluster was in the test at the end. hope it was just the camera. great work as always.
very true!
Its snizz like this that's gonna get you guys 50k subscribers. Good work guys👍
that's sick bro what cant yall do
what i learnt is that you should use masking tape to hold the LEDs down while soldering. In case of a bad LED or wrong polarity, you might need to remove it. Gluing it down may cause damage to the board when you try to remove it.
wow that was largely informative and helpful. thank you
I've been waiting for this one!!
Please do a small episode for LEDs on the 280z you all would hella be Kings of the z world lol.
Do the turn signal in an arrow shape.
Or don't
I like to give a choice.
Thats cool as hell. Good work!
can't wait for the next episode!!
a rage room would be awesome! then you could have fans send in/donate stuff to be smashed! then at open houses have the room available for people to go nuts in!
super educational video, loved it!
now that's something i need to learn how to do...3g eclipse tail lights are all ugly....all of them. i would love a set of sequential tails
Awesome stuff! Looking to do this on our BMW 2002 roundie!
awesome as always
Great job as always, explained it great 😎
Bring that thing to cars and coffee greatfalls
Great video
I finally subscribe wanna follow the 2002 build since I as well want one and wanna get ideas befor I get mine and start my journey as well
PCB Board... right
(Printed Circuit Board... Board)
Such technical hurt my head. Skillz though Tim.
I love this shit. Nice work fellas
Any more BMW 2002 content coming?
@Street Bandito Get yourself some flux. It will improve your soldering quality a ton. Don't forget to clean it with IPA afterwards ;)
Such a shame to use perforated board. For about 10 dollar you can have them made from decent FR4 in any color you want. Send me the drawing and I will help you with the design
why have drls and the brake light separate? Why not link them together so the voltage doubles when braking?
Since the plastic for the brakes is red and for the turn signal is orange, can't i use just white leds?
More videos like this
Can you epoxy the led so they have some shape
very informative and clear...thanks for the info
Printed circuit PCB board?
The lexussss 😍
Yesss shes coming along nicely!
The LEDs seem dimmer than the regular light bulbs in the video, especially the reverse. Is this just how the camera is picking it up or are they actually dimmer?
Where did you you guys get the Pcb boards from? I'm halfway through my LED build, got mine from RadioShack when I started it but they aren't "printed" like yours so I can't solder directly to them.
I'm wondering the same thing. Where?
YES!
First rule of automotive electrical work: Own a Power Probe. I have Snap On's version and it does some crazy shit, although the ergonomics of it kind of suck. Power Probe is easier to hold.
Should have used a oldshool brightlight
If you guys can pull up 2 or 3 videos a week, you will multiply x10 your subs
Nice work.
The LEDs look like they were meant to be on the 2002.
YEAHHH!
Adafruit is pronounced ayy-dah fruit after Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer. :)
@Street Bandito, would you guys need to install some type of heat-sink on these LEDs? I've noticed a lot of LEDs that run constantly have a little finned side to them because of how hot they get. If I were to undergo something like this, would I need to worry about the heat melting the taillight?
It's called proto board as in prototype
What was tust car in the back? Im Not up2date actually
if i were to send my tailights to you guys, would you be able to build them to be LED?
Why would you need red leds when the glass is red?The light will have the correct color after passing through the glass.
That was sweet as SKUNCH!
This Sista's gonna try it!

💅 😍💡🔥🔍🍭🍬🍫🐝
PUT A DIFFUSER TO THOSE LEDS
How do I figure out how many LED's i need per light? I'd like to do this to my car and I dont want to buy crappy LEDs but I dont want to pay for way too many nice LEDs that go to waste.
Love it!
Upcoming Ls 400 vids 😮 🤔🤔
What up what up!!!
supertrooper1600 what up!
Why not just use some cut to length 12V LED strips...? Haha
This reminds me of why I didn't like working with truck battery systems. Put the positive to the negative my ass...
Nice 02 but roundies are better 😉
Hiiiii-YYYYYYAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!👊✊
@@StreetBandito Flawless Victory👌
I have a 74, lol just shoot me the info on what you used specifically.
Printed Circuit Board-board.
11:01 is just comedy
too bad the authorities in Europe have sticks up their asses when it comes to stuff like this, I really want to do something like this to my car. I was pulled over and was sent to a full technical inspection due to my LED headlights that were both DOT and ECE compliant. I almost had to get a lawyer to get my car back on the road again without changing back to the original headlights.
Halictus In which country?
Halictus DE?
Norway. We're not a EU country, but we have many of the same laws as the EU regarding lots of stuff due to trade agreements.
Norway
👍🏼👍🏼
put some white translucide acrylic and it will be good. seeing the leds makes it look like china crappy stuff.
That kinda made it look worst...
Bring on the flame!
Finally! Lol
Easy piesy
104th like!
Completely illegal in EU ... Your car gets impounded by police on the spot.
No it's not
@@MrAtterhagen Which EU country are you from ... Ivory Coast?
Sweden
@@MrAtterhagen the new EU Road worthyness test has been implemented in Sweden from May 2018. With limited exceptions for historical and "personally-made" vehicles it actually makes modifications illegal, unless with homologation. Luckily previously register vehicles will continue to receive permits to drive/ride on public roads.
Never heard of it and cops don't care.
