    Kind of feel like Longlegs as a character had their face painted white to appear doll-like, somewhat hinting at the idea that he is likewise a kind of puppet for the devil. Loved this movie and keen for a re-watch!

    • @6Churches
      @6Churches 2 місяці тому

      It was shot wonderfully (perhaps a little dark), but the story is corny as all hell and there's no actual suspense of detective work, nor does Lee's psychic powers do anything of note. The whole film is a delay tactic until the final scene, which is poorly motivated (For instance, Ruth never needed to kill the FBI agent at all... she could have just left early for the birthday party and the whole family would have died as result)

  • @RainbowOnCloudyDays
    @RainbowOnCloudyDays 3 місяці тому +118

    In my view, all the children in the film were born in a special way: in a breech position. In the film, it was mentioned that the mother of a girl disliked her because she was born the wrong way around. This means that the baby was born feet first, then the body, and finally the head.
    The birth of a baby in a breech position can symbolize the number 9. This could explain why the children had to die at the age of nine. Additionally, when you turn 9 upside down, it becomes 6. If you add 6 to 8, you get 14. Interestingly, all these children were born on the 14th of the month.

    • @ttheartsu

      Breeched could also just be a reference to inverting the holy trinity. “Upside down”. There was a shot of Lee in the basement; and it was upside down as well.

    One thing I don’t think many have realized and that is worth exploring. The song recently published indicates Longlegs last name is spelled Kobble with a K. If you look at the cast of the movie there is an FBI agent (Agent Kurt Kobble played by Scott Nicholson) who has that same exact last name. This can’t be a coincidence.

    • @Ico_
      @Ico_ 3 місяці тому +48

      Wanna hear something even crazier? He does appear at one scene only i do think.
      The scene happens when Longlegs got arrested is asked "Sir, I need you to get on the F%%%% ground". On the ground.. But he wants to be under.
      Also, if you look closely at the shot, you can see that the two electric poles and the cop, does a V. With all the clues and triangles on the movie, this cannot be a coincidence either. Or else.. they would have shot on the other way of the road, where there is only ONE pole on the right side of the road. Making the scene easier to shot (less details I guess?
      The scene happens at 1 hour 08 : 36. If you do the math.. and reproduce the patterns by the finger (he points at him 3 times) 36 X 3 => 108. Which points at the timestamps when the scene does start.
      But what is even more crazier.. is that this scene does last 6 seconds :).

      I'd disagree with you on the point. I think the use of "the devil" in the Longlegs makes it feel like somewhat ordinary in some sense and more close to home. Saying that, I think the director didn't work enough around that theme (probably due to a lack of time, the movie is too short) as well as some other themes. Here's something I don't see many people talking about: a veiled reference to Jodie Foster who of course played Clarice Starling in _The Silence of the Lambs._ When Lee is invited by her boss Carter into his home, she has this exchange with his daughter:
    MISS RUBY: Did you always want to be an FBI agent when you grew up? (or something along those lines)
    LEE: Actually, I wanted to become an actress.
    MISS RUBY: But that'll mess you up.
    Jodie Foster had a career as a child actress, most notably in 1976's _Taxi Driver._ Watching this film caused John Hinckley Jr. to be so obsessed with her, so much so that he tried to assassinate the president just to get her attention. When he revealed why he did it, Jodie Foster was so traumatized she quit acting in theater plays.

    So many things to unpack from this movie.
    Not knowing it was about the devil is what made it more uncomfortable for me. I do not know what it was but throughout the movie I had this unsettling feeling like someone was in the room with me so to speak. I kept looking for longlegs in the background and at a point I swear I thought I was seeing things that weren’t there. When the reveal came and it turned out that it was the devil I was seeing … my stomach turned.. as someone who grew up with a very religious mother who warned me about the devil so much I just rebelliously ignored her warnings. This movie brought me to the realization that my mother was 100% right. When you look at the real world and you see all of the horrible things humanity has done , you can’t help but realize the devil is real.
    The most terrifying thing about it is you can’t prove it ..
    If your argument against “God” is because you can’t see him so he can not be real I beg you all…. Open your eyes and look around very closely and you will see the devil!

    While it could be true that Longlegs was delivering dolls before Lee's mother was recruited by the devil, we cannot ignore what Longlegs says in the interrogation scene to Lee. That her mother was the "seventh she" who was given the same choice of crimson or clover - to accept the gift and destroy it yourselves or bow down.

    There he is… the birthday boy! 🎉
    Thanks for this great video and explanation! Happy birthday!
    My bday was july 3rd and the fact that this film was released on the month of july means a lot to me. I really resonate with the part about Oz Perkins wanting the movie to be set in the 90’s… I agree, great films were made in that era and also, my mother died in the 90’s when I was a teenager so I can relate with what he said about his dad’s passing and dealing with it while becoming a young adult; because it happened to me too. I have always found comfort in horror movies since I was a kid but I can honestly say Oz is really talking to me and to and entire generation. But the cherry on top is Nic Cage! I have always been a huge fan of his so this movie having him as the satanic psycho makes me so happy and it is such an amazing feeling and experience over all! ❤also I love how Lynchean this movie is in a way, because I love David Lynch films but that is just my personal opinion. Anyway, I can’t wait for the film to be released on DVD!!! Thanks again and Cheers!

    I for one loved the idea that a murder thriller ended up being a supernatural horror. Generally a horror fan is inclined to like either one or the other but the mix of the two ended up great.

    Whenever I see a video titled "XYZ movie explained" I tend to immediately assume that's going to be a flattening or dumbing down of the story. Channels like Let Me Explain and FoundFlix are the worst offenders for stuff like this, often barely understanding the themes to begin with and giving just the worst interpretations. This is one channel that definitely does not follow that trend and I'm so glad about that. It's easy to tell that you genuinely have an appreciation for these films and you're not just pumping out content. Keep up the great work.

    Another hidden devil appearance I saw while watching this in theaters: When agent harker is in her house, looking out at the window after cracking the code of the letter, the Devil's shadow is standing right behind her to the left of the screen. The shadowy figure is so big in the frame that it can be mistaken for the darkness of the room, but you can see the outline of the horns.

    I think the connection to Silence of the lambs is actually pretty obvious. Lee is Clarice, Carter is Jack Crawford, and most notably the Head of the hospital where Carrie Anne is institutionalized speaks and acts like Dr. Chilton

    12:08 you missed one of the devils appearances in the film, at 31:00 while she’s decoding her letter, he appears behind her in the doorframe, I had my eyes on the background that whole scene knowing some bullshit was gonna show up and I’m so happy it did.

    -some “mirroring” I noticed (spoiler territory)
    “The Seventh She”
    -in scripture, the prophet Enoch is referenced as “The 7th He” or “The 7th Descendant of Adam. Who prophesies to the wicked “the judgement of God”
    Longlegs: “The 7th She”-Ruth Harker, brings about the malevolence of Satan
    The 12 apostles:
    Longlegs: b4 Lee jumps in on this dead in the water case, there were 10 family murders. After decoding the messages, they find out about the Camera family, the father w/the axe. Carrie Anne survived cause she was at school, but jumps off the building while Harker is interviewing Cage
    =11
    Then, Lee’s boss, Carver & his family
    =12 (or cause the daughter survived-the hispanic family they find? Could be wrong on this-maybe a reach?)
    Crimson & Clover:
    -from the song by Tommy James/The Shelldons;
    Crimson means “love that flourishes behind the door/home
    Clover-a flower that blooms
    Longlegs:
    Crimson-accept the “gift” (doll) & see hatred flourish, murdered family
    Clover-accept helping him, “bow, bow way down”-a belief in Satan & his work will be an idea/belief that blooms
    Also (not mirroring, but an answer)-some people thought that the doll’s eyes opening were “an attempt at a jumpscare”-No no; Perkins isn’t using that
    The doll’s eyes symbolize that in that moment-Carrie Anne woke from her catatonic state.
    Exactly why Carrie Anne “thinks she’s seen Harker”-she sees through the pov of her doll

    They set horror films in the 80s and 90s because of social media and cell phones,they didnt have to put any President on the wall,they could have just said it was the 90s at the start,cell phones can really break a horror movie,unless its Scream,otherwise they have to come up with the old"oh the phones dont have any signal out here"trope...and that just immediatly takes you out of a serious horror.

  • @JillpapI
    @JillpapI 3 місяці тому +1

    I understand that's it's technically their "purpose" but I've never been a fan of people judging horror movies by their scariness.
    As both a person who has watched horror movies for over 20 years and who also comes from a country where the majority of food is world-renowned for being extremely spicy, I _(perhaps ironically)_ feel a strong similarity between spicy food and horror movies, i.e. it feels like many spicy food fans care more about the food being as spicy as possible rather than *_actually tasting good,_* vice versa.
    I also personally feel that many satanic / possession movies feel somewhat underwhelming and almost silly. Not in the "spiciness" sense, though said movies often further bolster my opinion; most of them just feel like cashgrabs written with very little true desire to present a genuinely good "recipe", so to speak.
    I was very happy to consider Longlegs to be an exception, and your insights and analysis have helped a lot with this.
    I love how the makeup allowed us to witness a Nic Cage performance even more unhinged than we've come to expect, and in that respect it sometimes feels like a movie made for Nic Cage and no other. It feels like we can see Cage knew he'd never top Hopkins with cheap mimicry and Monroe knew she'd never top Foster the same way either.
    It feels so much like Lambs while genuinely different enough to be a force of its own.
    I actually think the TV show idea would work better than multiple Longlegs sequels.

Every character I enjoyed thoroughly, the opening scene instantly grabbed my attention with the cinematography.
