Here's an example that may help. In the Olympics they measure swimming times to the hundreth of a second so even if you swam a lap in 14 seconds flat, when it appears on the leader board the time would read 14.00 seconds. Why? Because it shows a specific degree of accuracy that is important when you compare it to the other swimmer's times. Any whole number, let's say 14 for example, can be written like this: 14.0 (tenths place) or 14.00 (hundredth place) or 14.000 (thousand place) Hope that helps

I teach 8th grade science and this method really helps them and makes it more fun. I also have them create their own saying if they want....they come up with some funny ones!

Yes, just keep going beyond the beginning and end of this chart (the K and the m) - Wikipedia has a great chart of SI (System of units) and you can use it to expand this. Remember that the exponents do change so you’ll have to “leave spaces in the between” so that you can just move freely about the chart. Kinda hard to explain in a comment, but you’ll get the hang of it when you see the chart and start doing it.

Thank you soo much! I take super long to finish our schools yearly big tests, so I was basically the last on still testing in another room. Because of this, my teacher decided to teach this to the class without me for 4 days (I told you I took a long time to test). Once I was finally done, I came back at the exact moment our class was having a unit test, and because I missed 4 days of learning I couldn't understand some of the problems. I told my teacher this, and he couldn't give a damn sh*t. His exact words were, "Wing it." I plopped my butt back at my desk and angrily did the test. And no surprise, I got a C on it. So I came here to actually learn how to do this, what my damn teacher couldn't do. Thanks a ton.
