    Because of the air bags the design of the steering wheel make you NOT want to hold the steering wheel higher. Holding the wheel at at 2 and 10 o'clock is no longer the best hand position due to the air bag. The tendency to grip the wheel hard before a crash and a high grip on the steering wheel caused too many broken bones. A 3 and 9 o'clock grip is the recommended hand position now.

    • @dchristo10
      @dchristo10 2 роки тому +4

      They actually teach the 8 and 4 hand position now, which I can't stand. It puts the arms in the safest position should the airbag go off. Of course you could argue that driving that way increases your risk of accident...causing your airbag to go off.

    • @Nemoticon
      @Nemoticon 2 роки тому +1

      @@dchristo10 There is truth in this... I also think that with modern electric steering being so light and uncommunicative now, higher steering hand positions don't have the same benefit as it previously had. If it's anything like the price of the new server ooh I'm quite sure there are some EV's out there with a lower price point albeit not with the prestigious YODA name behind them. Starting to get a bit concerned that some EV's are starting to have the same price tags of what some houses cost or used to cost. @orangeman3343 2 роки тому

      As well as saying most affordable option rather than saying it's simply affordable it's worth nothing it's a U.S review and cars in there are cheaper I think. It starts from $37k which in GBP even with the current rubbish conversion rate is just over £28,000. I'd buy this over a Model 3 personally, even if the Model 3 is a bit cheaper, but they're different types of cars so I'm not sure anyone in the market for a BZ would even consider a Model 3. More likely a Model Y but still a different market. The Toyota is a purpose built SUV EV with some off-road capability albeit less so for the FWD version of course, the Model Y is a raised Model 3 that's targeted at road use only.

    The same ‘butt-ugly’ design choices that prevented me from ever considering a Prius have been made with this vehicle. The wheel arches mean the only paint choice I could make is gloss black (more Darth Vader than Stormtrooper).
    The instrument cluster looks like they couldn’t decide between a conventional panel or a HUD, so they stuck it halfway between.

      I couldn't agree with you more. The many design features that this person likes, I think are ugly. I agree, have buttons on the steering wheel, the center console, below the display and on the display seems to take the design approach of when it doubt, add more buttons. One of the main issues I had with my 2011 Chevy Volt is that it had duplicate physical buttons for most of the soft buttons. This Toyota seems to follow the same aesthetic. Also, it would be helpful to spend less time on the look of the car and more time on EV features like range, charging speed, acceleration. Toyota looks an awful lot like a car company that will not be competitive in the EV world.

    Honestly, it seems like this vehicle was an after thought and slapped something together to make a full electric vehicle. Yes, that gauge cluster is too far which interferes with the steering for viewing. I think it’s actually designed for a yoke steering. It’s a good start and as long as it’s affordable in the 30ks, it adds to electrification of Toyota and Subaru. You mentioned funky a lot of times and that’s just what it is. However, you still haven’t driven this thing yet? What’s the holdup?

    I am a Toyota fan, but when I look at the materials here, the quality and feel is very modest. In addition, the doors close poorly (despite open windows) and with a clattering noise. It is also unbelievable that Toyota has not managed to place a storage tray for the charging cable in the front "trunk". The luggage compartment roller blind, which probably originates from a Camry from 1992, matches this. And the crowning glory of incompetent engineers is the speedometer behind the steering wheel, which can probably not be read by 80% of the world's population, because the steering wheel simply covers him!

    I imagine that the instrument panel behind the steering wheel might be hard to see at times for two reasons: (1) the steering wheel (partial) obstructing it, and (2) with it not being shielded, direct sunlight on the instrument panel may be a pain. And, yeah, it would be nice for more steering-wheel movement up/down and backwards/forwards... I love that the sunroof cover is opaque, not translucent; also like that they still have a USB-A port, not just USB-C ports. I like the buttons for climate and audio controls and not putting them into the screen. The lack of a glove compartment is a huge negative, however, as is the piano-black shiny surfaces inside. The power button embedded in the air vent is bizarre, and I can see accidentally pushing that button from time to time (hopefully all hell won't break lose if you push it while driving)... I'd like to see more of a quick run-through of all the different windows in the infotainment screen and instrument panel, and I'd like to see a little more display of the embedded map and what it can/can't do (and display of how Apple CarPlay looks). Huge criticism of all these BEVs across the board (excluding big pickups and Hummers): people want spare wheel/tires, and I wish they'd all put full-size spares in the frunk area up front (the frunk lacking in this vehicle altogether).

    Things i like. - it’s a Toyota.. by year 3 should be most reliable e-car. - it’s a hatchback for easy storage - a real dash (smh Tesla). Dislikes - the looks, especially the black flares - the speedo display (weird placement, wings?) - the drive selector mechanism - no volume knob - no glove compartment - low max charging (100 kw?) - no frunk - 2wd is fwd instead of rwd. Rwd is better and no reason to pick fwd on a purpose built e-car. Will be interested in the price and the efficiency when more testing is public.

    • @roverdad
      @roverdad 2 роки тому

      coblaze1, fwd has the front tires steering and handling the acceleration for the car. Works ok in ice cars because the heavy engine is in the front giving good traction. An electric car will likely not be front heavy which will mean less traction. Also no need for drive shafts or multi gear transmissions so really no reason to have fwd.

    • @coblaze1
      @coblaze1 2 роки тому

      @@roverdad i see what you mean. but i dont see any reason for it to be RWD. the weight distribution in an EV is very different from an IC engine car, because of the very heavy battery. if all the electronics are in the front, it makes sense to make it FWD.

    Great review and helped me to cross the Bz4X off my list - the quarter panel contrasting inserts are hideous and make you think it was in an accident with replaced panels waiting to be repainted. The interior - dash, wheel, screen, etc. doesn't to anything for me. A lot of hate on this one from people. lol. I don't hate it, but there are some design cues that are not fantastic. And I am not sure this would be idealistic for the average fast food burger consumer. Will know if it is even considerable when price comes out.
