Age of Empires IV - The French

  • The French civilization is known for their fierce Royal Knights, specialized gunpowder artillery, and economic bonuses. Constructing archery ranges and stables within the influence of French keeps, archers and Royal Knights can be trained using fewer resources. For early attacks, Royal Knights are available starting in the Feudal Age, and with destructive charges and the Chivalry upgrade to automatically heal when not in combat, the French are unstoppable. Only a thorough defense can counter the legendary cavalry charge of the French.

It’s nice to actually be able to produce knights in the Feudal Age. Never made sense to me why you could never do that in AoE 2 (balance aside), given that knights were a fundamental part of feudalism.
Also, good to see them using gunpowder. The French were (iirc) one of the first European states to professionally use it on the battlefield, in the last quarter or so of the 100 Years War, but that never seemed to reflect on the French in strategy games such as the AoE series

French seem to have access to both of the specialist cannons (the Ribauldequin for anti infantry and Culverin for range/anti seige) and have better bombards as the "cannon" replaces it and is more mobile. However, those are all "slow burn" expensive imperial age units whereas the Chinese have access to several options that are less expensive and available earlier. So with every civ getting gunpowder it's more like French and Chinese excel with gunpowder focused armies, English, HRE, Rus, and Abbasids are fair with gunpowder, and Delhi and Mongols are dogshit with gunpowder given they have the bare minimum.

It's quite logical, the Chinese are the first to have created and used black powder, and the French are among the first (see the first) in Europe to have used them a lot and to have experimented in this field and there. have developed ballistic sciences (France has remained very strong in the field of firearms).
