Age of Empires IV - The Rus

- The advantage of playing the Rus is that the wilderness is yours to command. By using your surroundings, particularly gathering resources, you can build up a strong economy quickly. In battle, the Rus are known for their mounted Warrior Monk that can buff surrounding units, and for the Streltsy, a powerful gunpowder unit.

I like how the Rus can earn gold from hunting because that is a nod to the lucrative fur trade, which started under Ivan the Terrible and saw a massive expansion east while acquiring most of the territory of what is now modern day Russia.
The fur trade in Russia was on going long long long long before Ivan
It was Novgorod’s whole thing
@@a.cunningham4974 Exactly. The city of Novgorod was a large trade hub in Northern Europe and the namesake republic founded many settlements in North Russia and controlled various Finno-Ugric tribes exactly for that purpose.
Also how the Monk warriors are a Nod to the battle of kulikovo, and the ships convert mechanic comes from Oleg and his soldiers making wheels to put them into boats to attack Constantinople.
In rus they are fighting goblin like RPG , there is gold in wild animal body 😂
@@linglw6592 your telling me russian irl ISINT a fantasy rpg?
The gun smoke effects are extremely good looking
It's funny how in the imperial age the Rus have trebuchets and streltsy at the same time. Actually, the streltsy were first used during the siege of Kazan and they were accompanied by huge cannons. Russia had cannons since the 14th century.
Funny is that Rus in 14th century did not existed
@@andrej9290 Rus was fractured into many feudal states and was consolidated by the Grand Duchy of Muscovy into Russia.
@@BEPrimAnim Ok, this is just a russian propaganda you talk...
@@BEPrimAnim Pity, that so many european are blamed with fake russian history, panslavism, soviet coolness or idk what else
So, we can say that some states were occupied by Russia, and most important, Kiev only in 17 century, but it not really rebuilded Rus'
1.Rus never was a consolidated state. In time of first mongol, only land from 4 political regions of rus who went to fight with mongols, was Kievan, Chernigov - protoukrainian Princes (with Polovecs), no Suzdal, no Novgorod, no Polotsk - the didn't want to go with with together.
2. True Rus is just an Kiev lands technically
3. Russian have nothing to do with rus, totally different political system, cultural etc, for example in novgorod and Kiev was Veche - something like parliament - in Muskovia was despotic euroasian Tsar.
4- Nobody wander to came to Russian new Rus. Novgorod for example- he fight for freedom, to time of Ivan oprichina there
@@BEPrimAnim And, I don't thing they really might have cannon in 14 century, it was end of civilization then, when first shoot weapons in Europe were used in end 15 century, like in Husit wars
Through I don't understand why developers did not give Rus stone walls, even if Rus were known to be one of first European civilizations to build unique kremlin walls like in Novgorod, Suzdal, Vladimir, Kiyv, not to mention famous Moscow's kremlin wall.
Edit: Good to see developers added stone walls for Rus with Spasskaya tower as bonus :)
You are right, however, the Rus didn't really adopt stone fortifications until much later. The original Kremlin was made out of wood and it wasn't until the end of the 14th century that the Kremlin in Moscow was built with stone. I believe that Ivan the Great was the first ruler to employ stone fortinfications in Moscow. It wasn't until the rule of Peter the great that stone work and brick buildings took off in Russia in favor of wooden buildings. I think what the developers should do is allow the rus to reserarch a tech in the imperial age that allows them to built stone walls and that changes their kremlin to a red stone building.
just a game, balance to other civilization
@@djsanchez3444 There weren't many but some Rus did make their detinets wall forts in late early medieval and early high medieval.
I played it, Rus get stone walls in the Campaign (Moscow levels have them), but not multiplayer
In time of Rus (Kiyv periphery) there was no really stone walls, then, it was realy not an single nation. Later in Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Rus' and Zhemait started to build some, later in Muskovy and Novgorod
Warrior Monk definitely one of my favorite add up to the game. Can't wait for those micro battles!!
Imagine if the Streltsy has a 'walking fortress'; it'll be OP.
... so the Gulyay-Gorod? I feel like that is the allusion being made with the increased bonus over time for stationary streltsy
It's kinda weird how they treat with this Russian word. Streltsy is plural form, one is streletz. Means "shooter, the shooting one". But in Ru we don't add -s for plural, there is a more complicated word change. And they kinda called one unit with plural form. I think, it would be better to keep single.
You can bring villagers to the frontline in order to build fortifications & such
I don't know if I'll have the micro to be able to handle the warrior monk, but the Rus look like a potent early game civ. I wonder how they'll match up verses the Mongols.
I think mongol horse archer will be strong vs them because rus got only basic archer with no spetial upgrades.
@@Methodius7 They did mention something about their Horse archers being a bit stronger. Maybe the civ bonus for Mongols are that they can fire on the move whilst Rus horse archers hit harder.
@@holoqofholoqqia9503 Mangudai do move while firing. Rus cannot. This is stated in the rus v HRE game they played and showed off.
I'd imagine the mongol horse archers, mangudai, are gonna be more focused on the traditional mongol horse archer tactic of skirmishing, with some active encirclement.
In Age4, you'll probably utilize rus horse archers as effective, super fast archers, great for chasing down MAA and infantry without letting them get any hits in, and some poking and prodding
Meanwhile, the mangudai will focus most likely on Kiting and drive-by's, leading the slower enemy armies through a glorious chase through their farms, while dealing damage to nearby vils.
This doesn't mean they can't be used for the other tactics, just the most likely best scenarios for them.
@@Matthew-hl5eg Ah I see. I didn't watch any of the match ups I'm just going off what was explained in the civ overviews
I started playing AoE2 again, and remembered how annoying hero units were since the game auto-fails you for losing Genghis or Joan of Arc, despite them being powerful units. Decided to actually use them once I got better, still lost them dozens of times.

You can notice how with the change of in-game ages/stages the faction changes historically:
Rurikid Novgorod ---> Rus States(Novgorod, Vladimir, Kyiv, etc.) ---> Grand Duchy of Moscow (Muscovy) ---> Tsardom of Russia.
However, it is a bit unclear why exactly the Rus is banned from building stone walls, like, is Kremlin fortress in Moscow is made out of wood or what? Also, why even in the final stage, the faction has stuff like a trebuchet when the Tsardom of Russia had cannons since 14 century which were actively used in the Siege of Kazan and etc.?
Gameplay balance trumps historical accuracy
I don't really like that Rus is only identified with modern russian territory. Belarusian and Ukrainian territories were in those proto-state as well, but their specifics has no mention in the game(

You might/probably are already aware but I’d recommend AoE2/3 Definitive edition if AoE4 isn’t what you expect. But both are very tactical and dynamic although! But I feel the same, excited to see what AoE4 will bring

Interesting. I am still really excited for The Mongols but I will definitely have to give The Rus a try. Looks quite fun.
A man of culture, I see. *throat singing & Morin Khuur intensifies*
Wait until they release the Malays that masters both land stuff and the seafaring stuff.
I hope they make Malay civilization be like that. In land, they built amazing things such as BOROBUDUR TEMPLE.
But not much on the cavalry and armory.
And about seafaring, Javanese sail to Madagascar island in the early or mid medieval era. And they also traveled to region that now is the modern day Nigeria.
In late medieval era the Europeans come with their cutting edge ship and amazed by how Malays built their ships. "Jong" ship is bigger than Portuguese' biggest ship at that time btw.
And most Malay power is about the Javanese in Java island. Not Malays in Malay Peninsula.
So maybe they need to call it "Majapahit Empire"?? Not Malay civilization.

so far, Rus and France look really intriguing to me.
By the time Rus utilised gunpowder they definitely had stone walls. So not having stone walls but using streltsi at the same time is kinda weird for Rus..
I guess its just more iconic.
By the time the streltsi were available (15th century) as formations the rest of the world had Arquebuses for their own fire arm formations so *why* are the rest of the civs still using 14th century handgonne? That makes no sense, they should have HC at castle age and an upgrade for them at the imperial age to Arquebuses. For balance I reckon having a much slower reload, more damage to compensate and a even slower reload whilst moving so you can't kite and abuse their reload debuff would go a long way to making them both historically and balance wise on point. They'd fire a volley, butcher the charging enemy line units and then slowly reload so they can only fire a few volleys in a battle and they wouldn't be this blender like they are currently.
@@Marth667 Arquebuses were first used in battle in 1502 I believe, so it's a bit late. But streltsy also only existed later, not sure why they included one without the other.
Suprised the went with the Streltsy from the very edge of the middle ages instead of the Druzhina that were commonly used throughout.
For context Druzhina were heavy calvary that often fought dismounted and made up the bulk of medieval russian armies.
I think the warrior monk is a nod to Alexander Peresvet who was a orthodox monk who fought on horseback one on one against a Tartar champion during the opening of a battle.
There is actully a bunch of other warrior monks mentioned in chronicles. Even the historical prototype of Ilya Murtomets became a monk later in life.
@@dmitriyk.2890 very interesting, thank you for sharing. I’ll have to look them up.
Actually many monasteries in Rus was castles with their own monk warriors, like Pechora monastery near Pskov.
yeah his animation looks like Peresvet from the painting when he fought Mumai.
Streltsy are my favorite unit in AOE4, along with landschneckte and cannons. But, I really don't consider them handcannoneers as they were a mid 16th century unit, when the Rus campaign ends, rather harquebusiers and musketeers. I wish the harquebus was a handcannoneer upgrade for other civs in the Imperial Age due to the 16th century end date (maybe just a flat range upgrade).
I have seen enough to get the game even though Medieval games aren't my thing... The uniqueness of each civ in terms of eco is a welcome change compared to unique armies i am used to from other games... Well done Relic!!

The Rus would be a great teammate with a late game power house like the HRE or French
"Can't build stone walls" I wonder what the Kremlin is made of?
"Kremlin" (or rather "kreml'") is an old Russian word for a fortress stronghold. Meaning there were kremlins in every major town, and some of them could have been wooden. Actually, there are several kremlins still intact in variuous Russian cities beside THE Kremlin!

Streltsy units look very strong. Also gunpowder effects are very nice.
They are finally strong compared to as paper in aoe 3
Wish there was a upgrade for HC in the imperial age to become Arquebuses the streltsy are already using them as we can see. So much balancing to be done for HC units as currently they unbalance the game by killing absolutely everything. They should have a much slower reload, more damage to compensate and a slower reload speed whilst moving to they act more like gun powder units. A big upfront damage spike as they chunk the enemy units, then they slowly reload so they can only fire a few times a battle.
@@tommyfortress7515 in age 3 they were one of the best cost efficient units in the game.

@@tommyfortress7515 AoE 3 probably wanted to show the Streltsy during the Time of Troubles onward, when they were borderline-obsolete and were so much of a political liability that Peter the Great abolished the institution. The absence of straight swords in the early eras can still be understood, but something I did not understand was the absence of stone walls in later eras. The description of Russia says that wooden walls are only in the early stages. Are you serious, have you decided to make Rus (Muscovy) without white-stone kremlins?? 🤦🏻♂️
Yeah, thematically it would fit to give the Rus an Age 4 stone wall, which could be a bit weaker than it's European counterpart to offset the balance into more reliability on that wooden palisade wall. There **were** stone walls in many of Russia's old principalities and small kingdoms, so removing them entirely seems kinda dumb and unhistorical.
