Hey nick. Excellent video as usual. I've benn using a scuttle for almost a year now. Best tip I can give is to put water inside the chamber and submerge the scuttle in hot water in your sink while you bloom your soap, that way it's nice and hot when you're ready. Also, I'd also suggest using primarily badger brushes (with metal handles, preferably) than boar/synthetic when using the scuttle. The badger hair holds the heat better and longer than the other brushes by far. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Nick, I keep my scuttle hanging from a large cup-hook without the cork in it. That lets it drip and dry out after a shave, so it doesn't get mildewed. Just plug the hole when you're shaving.
Nick, you may like to try holding the scuttle in the palm of your hand with the thumb through the handle. much less stress on the fingers and more control over the scuttle this way. I hope this helps.
Hard water issue? I've found a great way to soften my shave. I place a small amount of Murray & Lanman Florida water into my water basin. It makes a fantastic rinse.
I just got a scuttle about three months ago. I got an extra large green one from Leza in Kiev. It is very nice looking and does a great job. I like to submerge the scuttle in water along with my brush. Then I empty it and refill the hole with water. Depending on the soap you have to watch how hot the water is. Some soaps/ creams just get eaten up by too hot a water. I find using regular tap water as hot as you can get it after running about fifteen seconds is fine. My water out of the spout leaves a film, so I prefer to heat the water in the microwave for about 100 seconds right before putting it in the scuttle. I love mine and very strongly recommend scuttles. I use mine virtually every day.
Good to see Nick having the same problem i have with the scuttle. Bowl isn't deep enough and the lather goes over the top and everywhere but the bowl. Thought I was doing it wrong.
Nick, I have this exact same scuttle and I've had honestly nothing but issues with it. 1. The depth/size of the scuttle make it harder to whip up later. I've found flatter bowls facilitate lather making, my go-to is a piece of tupperware still. 2. Using hot water seems to dry out my soaps as they break down the fats found in them. I've tried using room temperature water, luke-warm, warm, and even a dry scuttle. I cannot achieve a lather that does not dry out with the scuttle. Is it the way I'm lathering? Do I need a different angle for my brush? It seems that the depth of the bowl isn't helping me.
Great new video Nick! Has me seriously toying with the idea of getting a scuttle for myself, and my ever growing collection. Those Gillette SS blades are incredible indeed.
Hey Nick, Great videos! Very thorough reviews!! Glad to see a scuttle vid. Are you still using it? I've been using mine for about a year and have found it very enjoyable. I shave my head too so the scuttle is great as it keeps the lather warm through both procedures. A suggestion if you have trouble keeping the water hot- use a candle base warmer.
I love, love, love my Crown King scuttle. It helps to build a beautiful lather and there is nothing like a constant warm lather for every pass. Build quality is top notch. Fill with hot tap water before you get in the shower, when you get out of the shower dump out the water and add new hot water then lather. Very simple.
Oh boy, soft water...I miss it so much! Nothing but hard water here now in our condo. Clean and safe township water but it's hard. In my old place I had soft water and my shaves were amazing. Yes, you can work around it, but it's still not the same.
Rather than using a small scoop of shaving soap can you use a puck of shaving soap, for example Williams Mug Shaving Soap, and use it as a regular shaving mug?
Great job as always buddy. Love that skuttle btw. Been wanting to try some of that Cad by PAA too, just haven't had the chance to get any as of yet. Thanks for sharing the info bro. Have a great weekend Nick and thanks for subscribing to my channel. Mark. 💈👌😉👍💈
I use the same razor you're using in this video, but a vintage Gillette one. I bought it for 1€ at a flea market. I still haven't found a better razor yet. I do wonder if the head of the vintage Gillette is exactly the same as the Merkur version. I love the handle too. This razor gives me a good balance of aggressiveness and smoothness and the blade is always perfectly centered.
Thst looks like a real cool. Bowl might get one of these. For brushes I'm looking the best one, would you recommend the chubby 3 or sometjing else? Great videos. Thanks
Nick, that looks like a great knot on the brush, its very wide, good buy. I was wondering if you know if the scuttle can be microwaved??? I might want to hit it for 30 sec to 1 minute with water in it if I need a bit more heat?
+Timothy Magee Also, when you are finished with the scuttle I suppose you should capsize it for effective drying? It seems to me that due to its configuration it might be difficult to dry out effectively so you don't get any mildew in it.
Hey Nick, I just received this scuttle last week and love using it. I have been a face latherer prior. I never see you use it in newer videos. I agree, that I am not sure I get a better shave using it, just a more enjoyable one with the lather being warm. Now that it is getting colder, I think the warmth will even feel better. What are your long term thoughts? Thanks.
Hi Nick. Great video as usual. You make it very tempting to get a scuttle. I`ve had the Merkur 1905-6 for some time and really like it. Was thinking about a 34c but since they have the same head, I`ll probably just stick with the 1905. It pays to watch shave vids, you learn something new all the time.
+Brian B. Try a standard razor, all aluminium and about $50 on massdrop every while or so, or on buy/sell/trade. Its also outright with free shipping and extras for $55 here too www.bespokepost.com/box/the-barber
60 seconds or so with the scuttle in the microwave with the scuttle filled of course. Btw are u interested in trying an aftershave I'm developing? Its pretty good and only on its second version before some final tweaking. I was going to wait until I had the final product but thought maybe you can help give some input on the final tweaking. If you're interested let me know how to better contact you. Thanks.
hey nick I really enjoy your videos. I've used a lot of soaps and creams. I would like to know how you feel about aos soap? it's been my favorite and has lasted me over a year so far. thanks Nick keep up the videos
You're better off getting one elsewhere. There are plenty that are unique and/or homemade on Etsy or eBay and various other places at good prices that work just as well.
Hey Nick, thanks to finding your channel, my first safety razor was the Merkur 34C and I just love it! Anyway, do you prefer the open comb or the safety bar in this 1904/1906 model? Love that retro handle and need it in my collection. Thanks in advance!
Great video Nick!. I own the same scuttle and My go to razor is my 34c. I've been looking to buy the Merkur 1904 razor but I've read that there is a difference in blade gap(34C .71mm and 1904 .56mm). Do you feel any difference between the two?.
Hey Nick, I just started wet shaving and just recently switched from the van der Hagen razor (cheap DE razor from Walgreens) over to the Merkur 34cHD per your recommendation. When I am shaving, sometimes I can feel the blade against my skin, and other times I can't, is this normal? I didn't know if this is what is considered as "smooth" or not. I'm still getting good shaves with no irritation, so I'm not sure what it is. If you could answer, that would be great. should i feel the blade always with a smooth razor or never? Thanks!!
Hi Nick, I love watching your reviews. I've used a few of your review opinions as a deciding factor when I've been on the fence about whether to bite the bullet and try a few things. So thanks for your help with that! I do have a question for you though, I've had really good results from the "Big Ben Super Stainless", in the blue package, that I've received in my Wet Shave Club monthly box. Have you tried these yet? Is so, what were your thoughts on them? Are they in line for a blade review post? Thanks again!
Hey nick, I'd like to see a review of Chiseled face soaps, I've used them and like them a lot and curious to see what your opinion is on them. As well as maybe GFT shaving cream?
Nick.. Do you have any reviews of "the art of shaving" products? Their pre shave oil or shaving creams? I would like to get your take on how those products compare...
+Irving Lopez check out "Valobra" shaving soaps. They were the company that made soap for AoS and still make great soap. Unfortunately, AoS slightly downgraded their soap with a different creator that doesn't make soap that performs as well.
I would love a FaTip Testina Gentile review. Kinda want to pick up the razor myself and a review would help. I think anyone who's used a FaTip razor would love to hear your thoughts. At $30-45 for the razor (depending on which handle/model you get) for an all brass razor, FaTip razors have to be some of the best deals you can get in DE shaving.
+KingofWisdom I have the razor and have used it once. And I can tell you, it did not work well for me. Something about the angle of the blade in the razor really tore up my neck. I plan to try it again, and I will review it
+nick shaves I've been unable to make it work that well for me as well. It's not that gentile, lol. North to South, ok. But the across pass is difficult...
So will a pot metal razor. And I don't feel like the Gentile is aggressive at all, in fact I didn't like it for a time because I felt the razor was finicky with the shaving angle, which doesn't happen with an aggressive razor. An aggressive razor has so much exposed blade that it shaves at most angles.
Was looking forward to this after seeing you instagram post earlier - very informative! also I didn't realize that razor used the same head as the 34c - more info on the variety of heads or how many of their razors use that same head from murkur would be great! - it's a little harder than with edwin jager where they are all just the same lol
+Rob G My 2c, the soap is great but i didnt quite like the balm scent, I do recommend gingersgarden's suede balm and she does a matching preshave and soap (mahogany soap also matches it very well too)

hello I'm new to the wet shaving world, I recently got a ready to shave straight razor and would love to see something on how to strop and tune the straight razor .
You should use this scuttle whenever your shaving a thick coarse beard, for example when your doing your no shave November at work, just to get that extra comfort and protection from your razor.
There's not much difference other than the handle. The rr has a long hollow handle and is audible. The 34 is shorter making for a faster shave. For the money, I have both
If you start get to scuttle acquisition disorder, I would definitely check out Georgetown Pottery. You can type in "seconds" in their websites search bar. I own one of their seconds and can't see any imperfection. Payed $35 instead of $55 for their 12oz scuttle
I personally don't like or recommend Crown King, due to ex-CIA agent Douglas Smythe being a Pastry Warrior from Dessert Storm, but I can attest to the quality of a warm lather on your face after a long day. It's just perfect. Good video, Nick!
+totalanthony it's a joke since Douglas Smythe, the owner-operator of Crown King/Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements is a letting scumbag who's told people he or a family member were in Operation "Dessert Storm". He also told people he was a CIA agent. I could list all the scummy shit he did but I'm sure if you Google his name and "lies", the drama would be found without much trouble.
totalanthony He also scammed a bunch of people in several ways -- listing incorrect ingredients, saying his recipe was made from scratch while giving people cheap melt-and-pour glycerine soap, conducting fake interviews with "other people" which was actually himself, fake reviews on his stuff, etc. The list goes on. One guy posted a pic of one of his HTGAM soaps having a thin top layer of the actual advertised soap, with the other 80% of that puck of soap being melt-and-pour glycerine you can get for extremely cheap. He's a real class act.
Keeping your strop in the bathroom that high up will kill the leather due to the humidity. Best kept lower around the sink counter. Unless it's a vegan strop which may not be affected by the steam.
Now I've got to get one of those, great video Nick.
Kensurfs I just got one a few days ago. It’s definitely cool and took some time to get used to.
Hey nick. Excellent video as usual. I've benn using a scuttle for almost a year now. The badger hair holds the heat better and longer than the other brushes by far. Thanks and keep up the good work.
I really enjoy my Crown King Scuttle. I face lather during the week, but enjoy the scuttle when I have more time on the weekends.

+Stephen Meade I was thinking the same thing only because that's the way I hold it ha.
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks Nick ! Great finding scuttle info on some of your older vids. Just what I was looking for and you always do a great job, then and now 👍🏼
Great recommendation to temper the scuttle because if there is a temp difference that is too great the glazing can crack. a fine video.
By the way... Thank you for all the great videos.. I have learned so much and appreciate all the work..
Just purchased this on your advice Nick. Semouge 830, Feather blades, Bannister and Mann Seville, Merkur Futur combination. Should be GREAT! Thanks
Hard water issue? I've found a great way to soften my shave. I place a small amount of Murray & Lanman Florida water into my water basin. It makes a fantastic rinse.

Good to see Nick having the same problem i have with the scuttle. Bowl isn't deep enough and the lather goes over the top and everywhere but the bowl. Thought I was doing it wrong.
Just bought and tried today. Really enjoy it. I think the hot tub makes lather to come up really good
If you're a face latherer, and like warm lather throughout your passes, you may consider a brush scuttle to keep your brush (with loaded soap) warm.
Hey man, where have you been? I miss seeing your videos
Nick,
I have this exact same scuttle and I've had honestly nothing but issues with it.
1. The depth/size of the scuttle make it harder to whip up later. I've found flatter bowls facilitate lather making, my go-to is a piece of tupperware still.

Great new video Nick! Has me seriously toying with the idea of getting a scuttle for myself, and my ever growing collection. Those Gillette SS blades are incredible indeed.
Hi Nick. 2 Questions: 1. How often do you use your scuttle? 2. Do you like PAA CAD scent or Gondolier scent better?
Hey Nick, Great videos! Very thorough reviews!! Glad to see a scuttle vid. Are you still using it? I've been using mine for about a year and have found it very enjoyable. I shave my head too so the scuttle is great as it keeps the lather warm through both procedures. A suggestion if you have trouble keeping the water hot- use a candle base warmer.

Hey Nick, I would love to see you use the Symmetry Open Comb, mine has been gathering dust for far too long and forgot how much I loved it!
Thst looks like a real cool. Bowl might get one of these. For brushes I'm looking the best one, would you recommend the chubby 3 or sometjing else? Great videos. Thanks

I'm assuming the scuttle works equally well with shave creams? any feed back on this is appreciated
Hey Nick, I just received this scuttle last week and love using it. I have been a face latherer prior. I never see you use it in newer videos. Nick, why don't you use any pre-shave oil? I get get a much better shave with oil especially with a more aggressive blade.
Yes first pass important to use pre-shave oil/cream
hey, sorry to bother you. What is the name of your haircut? it looks really good

Awesome review Nick I love my Scuttle as well. Do you still use your Badger and Blade Omega brush
Great video Nick!. I own the same scuttle and My go to razor is my 34c. I've been looking to buy the Merkur 1904 razor but I've read that there is a difference in blade gap(34C .71mm and 1904 .56mm). Do you feel any difference between the two?.

ha, still watching but you just made a comment that you had just got through lifting weights... i thought your arms looked a lil more pumped dawg!
Nick, Crown King or Captain's Choice bowl? Can't make up my mind.
Hey nick, I'd like to see a review of Chiseled face soaps, I've used them and like them a lot and curious to see what your opinion is on them. As well as maybe GFT shaving cream?
I'd like to see a top 5-10 badger brushes video.
Your lather always looks thicker than mine...I still get a great shave, but I want thicker lather like yours. Any sugguestions?
Hey nick your channel is very entertaining keep up the good work

Sooner or later you will drop it and it will break..even from chest high...enjoy...
So will a pot metal razor. And I don't feel like the Gentile is aggressive at all, in fact I didn't like it for a time because I felt the razor was finicky with the shaving angle, which doesn't happen with an aggressive razor. An aggressive razor has so much exposed blade that it shaves at most angles.
i usually just set my soap bowl into the sink filled with hot water, is it worth almost $30 to be able to pick up the hot water with it?
Was looking forward to this after seeing you instagram post earlier - very informative! also I didn't realize that razor used the same head as the 34c - more info on the variety of heads or how many of their razors use that same head from murkur would be great! - it's a little harder than with edwin jager where they are all just the same lol
can you review the Crystal blade? Also I asked you about your usage of the ikon slant still waiting for your reply Thanks
I have learned not to use a straight razor after a trip to the gym. Shaking and straight razors don't match.
Love the scuttle... Awesome video
Can you try The Body Shop Maca root shave cream? I'm sure your wife shops there if you have one that is local.
+Rob G My 2c, the soap is great but i didnt quite like the balm scent, I do recommend gingersgarden's suede balm and she does a matching preshave and soap (mahogany soap also matches it very well too)
I love barbershop scents!! I need to try this one...
Sorry, Nick, but you had it reversed. Hard water is typically higher on the pH scale (alkaline), and soft water is lower. The minerals which made water hard - calcium, magnesium, etc - are alkaline minerals. It’s not so much the pH of the water as it is the calcium and magnesium ions of hard water that react with the soap to form scum, making lathering more difficult. Some soap makers add a chelating agent to assist in hard water.
That error takes nothing from this or your other great videos.
great video nick, now I want a scuttle!!! Hey I would love to see you review the Personna Platinum blades, they're the ones that come in the red packaging. I know Personna blue labs are your original go to blades so I would be interested in seeing what you have to say about the Personna Platinums. Im still learning which blades I like I got some Personna Platinums in my very first sample pack and have somewhat avoided them so far, usually because I'm more interested in trying another blade first. Anyway thanks for the videos and keep it up.
Id also love to see you review Tim's Soap!
Many thanks for you consistently awesome reviews! I just ordered 4 of the Crown King Shave Scuttles for myself and 3 of my traditional wet shaving friends! On a different note, please tell us a bit more about the art you have on the wall there. The blueprints of a straight razor and safety razor are perfect! Were could we get those?
I've seen them on Etsy. Tempted to get one myself.
i just got the crown king scuttle in the mail yesterday love it.
could you try supermax super stainless blades the blue packaging as I can't find any reviews of this blade anywhere thanks
Review the Gillette Silver Blues as soon as you can!
nick can you reocomend a good shaveing soap with bay rum cent
Hey Nick, could you review Soapy Bathman shave soaps?
Can u do a review of the van der Hagen blades. Probably the most readily available blade?
PJ they are garbage. Order yourself some quality blades. Astra blades are good for beginners. Feathers are my go to.
hello I'm new to the wet shaving world, I recently got a ready to shave straight razor and would love to see something on how to strop and tune the straight razor .
If you have Kell's original shaving soap could you give it a try?
Anyone know where I can get one of these in the UK or I site that deliveries? Love the idea of a warm brush all way through!
how's that brush holding up...I've been thinking about a 2 band so this might be a good way to get one
Hey Nick, how can i keep my face moisturized in between passes?
Have you ever tried Crown Super Stainless blades?
Why do you put soap on your face before lathering up? And what kind of soap do you use?
You should use this scuttle whenever your shaving a thick coarse beard, for example when your doing your no shave November at work, just to get that extra comfort and protection from your razor.
Hey Nick! have you tried body shop maca root shave cream?
hey quick question. Where do you find out about soaps and where is your go to place to buy them?
some are saying the razorock mission razor is better then the merkur 34c which do you think is a better razor for beginners
There's not much difference other than the handle. The rr has a long hollow handle and is audible. The 34 is shorter making for a faster shave. For the money, I have both
I wonder if you can microwave a scuttle? bet that super warm lather would be awsome bro !
Must be really nice on those frigid cold mornings
What did you of the shaving brush I've been thinking about getting one?
just ordered one, thanks!
what size of brush do you prefer?
Hi Nick do you still own and use the ikon 102 slant razor?
Well, a couple practical advantages, other than just feeling good, to having hot lather, are it softens up the beard more and helps open up the pores.
What is the name of the blades he is loving and shaving with here? Could'nt catch it.
gillette 7 o'clock super stainless. 7 O'clock "Russian Greens". Not to be confused with the "permasharp stainless" that also come in a green package.
have you tried chiseled face shaving soaps?
If you start get to scuttle acquisition disorder, I would definitely check out Georgetown Pottery. You can type in "seconds" in their websites search bar. I own one of their seconds and can't see any imperfection. Payed $35 instead of $55 for their 12oz scuttle
should definitely get shave scuttles off etsy, people will custom make them for you on the cheap
Nick have you tired Knock-Out Shave Soap?
Yeah! It's great stuff. I have a video up with my review of it
It's called tempering. Another way to do it, is full it with hot water, load your brush, then dump the water and refill the scuttle.
I personally don't like or recommend Crown King, due to ex-CIA agent Douglas Smythe being a Pastry Warrior from Dessert Storm, but I can attest to the quality of a warm lather on your face after a long day. It's just perfect.
Good video, Nick!
What do you mean by "pastry warrior"?
+totalanthony it's a joke since Douglas Smythe, the owner-operator of Crown King/Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements is a letting scumbag who's told people he or a family member were in Operation "Dessert Storm". He also told people he was a CIA agent.
I could list all the scummy shit he did but I'm sure if you Google his name and "lies", the drama would be found without much trouble.
+totalanthony lying** not letting sorry.
To google I go lol
totalanthony He also scammed a bunch of people in several ways -- listing incorrect ingredients, saying his recipe was made from scratch while giving people cheap melt-and-pour glycerine soap, conducting fake interviews with "other people" which was actually himself, fake reviews on his stuff, etc.
Nice, Nick.
Merkur 38 C review please thx
