@@TheSmart-CasualGamer yep. It was my favourite shoot in my decade as an actor. We filmed it in a warehouse in Paddington. Everyone working on the show was dedicated to it and focussed. We all knew we were doing something special and unique. Every moment was fun and there was such a positive atmosphere that you couldn’t make a wrong choice. I remember the director saying he thought we needed a dance sequence. I said how about we just stay in the medium shot (perhaps it was closer) and I’ll do some dancy hand moves - they were so infantile but it worked. We all came up with great choices because there were no boundaries, no rules.
This is an absolutely fantastic idea for a program. Pre-actual-space-travel sci-fi really interests me, and having an era-appropriate remake is a GENIUS. Although the fact that this was released in the same year as Mortal Kombat is slightly baffling. This low-budget fifties TV style must have been great fun to recreate and homage!
I knew I hadn't imagined it! We didn't pay too much attention, once Star Trek had finished but, every now and then, this would pop in to my head, and I hadn't been able to find it for years. I literally went through a website that had day-by-day archives of UK TV programme schedules, today, and ended up searching through loads of them, to try and track this down.
Excellent video Chris, thank you. Cannot understand how I don't remember seeing this after TNG on BBC2. Just the sort of quirky obscurity that I am normally drawn to.
Thanks! It kind of drifted around the schedules a bit; it was also on after DS9 some weeks, then wherever they could find room as Christmas drew nearer. After that it was also repeated in weekday morning slots a couple of times.
Very interesting background to one of my favourite shows from the 90s - thank you! I’d not made the connection with Dennis Potter’s Pennies From Heaven before. The concept reminds me of the Magic Roundabout (existing visuals, reinterpreted script) in reverse.
Hi Chris. Great video, thank you. I remember seeing this on either ABC or SBS in '92 or '93. Also I saw 1 episode in 2000. I think at first it was part of another show if I am not mistaken. Possibly Andrew Denton show or Doug Anthony Allstars show or The Big Gig. At the time I thought it was great, tho I did not understand how it was made. Being told it is an old '50s radio show recording done to '90s video makes sense now. Maybe if someone was to search these other 3 shows I mentioned they might be able to find the whole set and then put it to DVD.
I saw this series in 1996. One thing I remember is Rocky and Diana suddenly singing some alphabet song to each other. Went like "A, you're adorabe... B, you're so beautiful..". I think I taped some episodes, but hard to say if they survived.
Hey Chris I’m glad you showed you one of my favourite jobs. Cheers, Rocky.
Wait, you were Rocky? Bloody hell, I have a ton of questions, but I'll just ask this one. Was it as fun working on this as it looks?

My space uniform was actually a women’s jump suit from a local discount shop. Rocky ;)

Rocky Starr was originally aired on 2CH starring Howard Craven as Rocky Starr And Joe McCormack as Mitch during the 1950s.

It was on SBS on Saturday nights. It was after cartoon shows like Aagh! The Mister Hell Show, Dr Katz, Quads etc and before Eat Carpet
