A giant neuron found wrapped around entire mouse brain
    www.nature.com/...
"Like ivy plants that send runners out searching for something to cling to, the brain's neurons send out shoots that connect with other neurons throughout the organ. A new digital reconstruction method shows three neurons that branch extensively throughout the brain, including one that wraps around its entire outer layer. The finding may help to explain how the brain creates consciousness."
    Consciousness
    plato.stanford...
"Perhaps no aspect of mind is more familiar or more puzzling than consciousness and our conscious experience of self and world. The problem of consciousness is arguably the central issue in current theorizing about the mind. Despite the lack of any agreed upon theory of consciousness, there is a widespread, if less than universal, consensus that an adequate account of mind requires a clear understanding of it and its place in nature."
What is the function of the claustrum?
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
"The claustrum is a thin, irregular, sheet-like neuronal structure hidden beneath the inner surface of the neocortex in the general region of the insula. Its function is enigmatic. Its anatomy is quite remarkable in that it receives input from almost all regions of cortex and projects back to almost all regions of cortex."

I'm by no means a spiritual or religious person. But I can't help but feel that we are more than the sum of our parts. I readily admit that I could be wrong, and have often wondered whether self awareness itself is an illusion. We're too close to the situation. It could be that the human brain lacks the wiring to contemplate itself fully. It's sort of like trying to bite your own teeth.

Michael Powers, We must be more than the sum of our parts. Otherwise, there is no distinction between a living body and a dead body. I believe we are fully capable of unraveling the mystery of consciousness because we do not make observations of our own consciousness to deepen our understanding of it. We are obligated to investigate the functionings of another’s consciousness, or others’ consciousnesses, to acquire meaningful knowledge. We do not, “chew on our own teeth...” as you put it. There are dentists who have more fundamental knowledge about your teeth than you do (assuming you are not a doctor practicing in the dental field). They are fully capable of observing and treating your teeth l, adding to your quality of life, and providing indirect health benefits as well. Just imagine, there could be indirect benefits to treating a damaged consciousness.

consciousness is such an interesting topic. our mind likes to play tricks on us and we rely too much on our senses to perceive the world in front of us. just take dreams for example, you start off in a dream in the middle of a scene and before you even have the time to question what's going on, you're already buying into this new reality. even though your senses are disoriented as well as the world around you, you hardly ever notice that. it's amazing how much we have left to figure out about ourselves... perhaps we aren't even fully conscious to begin with...

From my perspective the Brain is a sophisticated Transformer & CPU of an ever-present Consciousness that permeates everything. Our entire physical human body is the marvelous feat of consciousness, utilizing nature, to produce the latest & greatest sensory hardware for Consciousness to experience reality through. There are so many profound parallels to me when we start drawing analogous comparisons to the workings of technology & other natural phenomenon. I do not see our biology or technology as something separate from nature or spirituality, & to a large degree feel that they all work in concert with one another. (Perhaps this is the reason why Kevin Kelly’s Theory, “The Technium”, claiming technology as the 7th kingdom of nature, resonated with me more than I would’ve initially imagined).

That’s exactly what I was going to write you could bash someone on the head and they go unconscious this proves nothing. They will never be able to find out how our universe can come from nothing and then how did life begin nature doesn’t have the ability to make a cell and it will never show the brain can create consciousness only correlations that’s all we’re ever going to get. Consciousness continues when the brain is stopped and the heart stopped and we have so many near death experiences that are verifiable 99% of them are not verifiable but one out of 100 come away with they were absolutely out of their body and were conscious because they come back with information they could not have known otherwise

    • @JohnStephenWeck

Greetings Dave. A lot of people conflate all mental-related words into “consciousness”. Consciousness just means the subjective experience of having a brain. So robots may be conscious too, just differently conscious. The physical basis of consciousness is unknown.
A brain is the biological hardware part of the computing system (manufactured by the genome software). Hardware means a hierarchy of physics particles. Consciousness probably comes from brains. The brain hardware is divided into subsystems. The automation and emotional hardware mostly evolved first, and then the cortex memory system. The cortex is a software container. Biologists primarily study a hardware system.
The mind is the software part of the computing system. Software means information stored in a memory system (in humans, the cortex). All softwares are made of pure information. In any system, software provides the intelligence (problem solving). This means that software handles identity, control, perception ("awareness"), thinking, motor control, knowledge, etc. The entire mind is software. Software provides its own structure (the software architecture), that exists completely separate from the hardware. Learning really means software building. Newborns have no mind, and people at the end of their lives people have the most mind (and the most intelligence). Psychologists primarily study a software system.
      Thanks for listening.

I think of myself as a skeptical and scientific person so when I see this experimental evidence showing that consciousness may well be this easily identified, I'm excited to see what things could be done with this information... Perhaps it's a key part to building a real neural network for the idea of building or transferring human consciousness into machines or even building human like AI (I'd stop calling it artificial intelligence and maybe just call it intelligence at that point - I?) so I like where this is going. Dreams are being understood, emotions are being understood, memories and maybe now even consciousness? What a time to be alive...

The Law myoho-renge-kyo represents the identity of what some scientists refer to as the ‘unified field of all consciousnesses’. In other words, it’s a sound vibration that is the essence of all of existence and non-existence, the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the true creator of everything that is, ever was and ever will be, right down to the minutest particles of dust, each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves by tapping directly into it by way of self-produced sound vibration.
On the subject of ‘Who or What Is God?’, when we compare the concept of ‘God’, as a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to Nichiren’s teachings, the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people call ‘God’ is our enlightenment, which exists nowhere else but within us.
When the disciples asked Jesus where the Kingdom of God is, didn’t he tell them that it was within them?
Some say that ‘God’ is an entity that can never be seen. I think that the vast amount of information that is constantly being conveyed via electromagnetic waves gives us proof of how an invisible state of ‘God’ could actually exist. It’s widely known that certain data being relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects, including instant global awareness of something or mass emotional reaction. As well as many other things, it’s also common knowledge that these waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to even enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars. However, none of this is possible without a receiver to decode the information that is being transmitted. Without the receiver, the information would remain impotent.
In a very similar way, it’s important for us to have our ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our life, all other life and what we and all else that exists truly is. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach into the core of our enlightenment and switch it on. That’s because the sound vibration of ‘myoho-renge-kyo’ represents the combination of the three major laws that underlie all existence.
‘Myoho’ represents the Law of latency and manifestation (Nature), and consists of two alternating states. One state of ‘myo’ is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists. This includes our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them, our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re not being expressed, our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma, and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ‘ho’, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes obvious to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory, whenever we experience or express our emotions, or whenever a good or bad effect manifests from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it simply means that it has come out of the state of ‘myo’ (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ‘ho’ (manifestation). It’s simply the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing something.
The second law, ‘renge’, governs and controls the functions of ‘myoho’, ‘ren’ meaning cause and ‘ge’ meaning effect. The two laws of ‘myoho’ and ‘renge’, both functions together simultaneously, as well as underlies all spiritual and physical existence.
The final and third part of the tri-combination, ‘kyo’, is what allows the law ‘myoho’ to be able to integrate with the law ‘renge’. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects together all Life and matter, as well as the past, present and future. It is often termed the Universal Law of Communication. Perhaps it could even be compared to the ‘string theory’ that some scientists now suspect exists.
Just as our body cells, thoughts, feelings and all else are constantly fluctuating within us, everything in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux, in accordance with these three laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of ‘myo’ and ‘ho’ in a single moment than it would ever be possible for us to calculate or describe. And it doesn't matter how big or small, important or trivial that anything may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now, or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of 'myoho-renge-kyo'.
These three laws are also the basis of the four fundamental forces and if they didn't function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. Simply put, all forms of existence, including the seasons, day and night, birth, death and so on, are all moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation, rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two universal states of ‘myo’ and ‘ho’ in absolute accordance with ‘renge’ and by way of ‘kyo’. Even stars are dying and being reborn in accordance with the workings of what the combination ‘myoho-renge-kyo’ represents.
‘Nam’, or 'Namu', on the other hand, is a password or a key; it allows us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘myoho-renge-kyo’. On a more personal basis, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives from moment to moment, as well in our environment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is turning, and rhythmically chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for a minimum of ten minutes daily, anyone can experience actual proof of its positive effects in their life.
In so doing, we can pierce through even the thickest layers of our karma and activate our Buddha Nature (enlightened state). We’re then able to bring forth the wisdom needed to challenge, overcome and change our negative circumstances into positive ones. It brings forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that is preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we truly are, regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexual preference. We are also able to see and understand our circumstances and environment more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations.
Actual proof soon becomes apparent to anyone who chants the words Nam-myoho-renge-kyo on a regular daily basis. Everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect, so the strength of the result from chanting depends on dedication, sincerity and determination. To explain it more simply, the difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, or producing a song and so on.
NB: There are frightening, disturbing sounds and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It's the emotional result from any sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo each day you are producing a sound vibration that is the password to your true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things, such as your fears and desires etc. The important way to get the best result when chanting is not to see things in a conventional way (it's not easy to achieve this), rather than reaching out to an external source, you need to reach into your own life and bring your needs and desires to fruition from within, including any help that you may need. Think of it as a seed within you that you are bringing sunshine and water to in order for it to grow and blossom. It’s so important to understand that everything that we need in life, all the answers and potential to achieve our dreams, already exist within us.

According to two prominent neuroscientists (not physicists, but they know physics), Mark Solms and Karl Friston, consciousness is centered in the reticular activating system and the periaqueductal grey, both located in the midbrain of the brainstem. That makes more sense to me than the claustrum.

One thing we know the brain has room temp super conductors in the neurons
Which are probably used like a quantum computer. The way a quantum computer works is by accessing other realities for information. So the brain has the Same
Ability which explains its paranormal powers also this gives it access to the
Quantum WiFi. The WiFi we use with computers is fast and getting faster. But
Our access to the quantum WiFi is infinite fast . this allows conscious to be in more than one location at the same time.Magnesium arises from the movement of charge , so what causes consciousness? It must have a cause we are aware of the effect

I applaud any efforts to find new correlates of consciousness. Yes, there are many physical things correlated with it. But many scientists simply don't grasp the fundamental problem: you can't explain the subjective via objective means. Physical processes, no matter how complex, have objective properties and that's all. You can't throw a bunch of objective matter, forces, and fields together and declare that the invisible subjective magically emerges. There is no room in current physics for the subjective. And yet, we live our entire lives in the subjective. Without it, there might as well be nothing rather than something
Consciousness is not objectively observable, unlike other physical things. Science can’t observe it. We would never know it was there if we didn’t personally feel it. To claim that consciousness emerges from the brain is like claiming that invisible faeries emerge from your cell phone. Essentially, you would be saying that something unobservable emerges from something observable, a claim impossible to prove and not true for any other emergent properties.

neurons have a mind on their own and comunicate like a crowd of people, and when you get confused or get headaces your neurons are having a verbal fight with each other. neurons speak a langaugae of electrical pulses to each other instead of voices. some neurons can get very argumetaive and even obsessed, some decide to agree with some other neurons. some neurons finds certain electrial signals uninportant and ignore them.

I don't think cells and connections themselves create consciousness, I think consciousness exists everywhere and then through connection, you obtain a different level of consciousness. I think the cells in the brain somehow act like a radio receiver, and somehow can access consciousness, but that it is not consciousness itself or doesn't 'generate' consciousness.

I think that there is a difference between what we call conciousness, being aware of oneself and ones surroundings, and that point of perception that is the core of what we call 'you'. The first is the result of the biological computer called the brain and includes what this video is about, the second is something that remains uncertain.
I imagine that a robot programmed to exhibit conciousness even to human level doesn't necessary have a point of perception just because he appears to have one, it is the same idea of the 'you can't verify anyone else is concious but you'- thought experiment, but here as a serious idea. In fact as far as I understand biology and chemistry if we really apply all of our science to ourself we are only biological soulless robots ourself, playing a movie of life inside their empty heads, there must be something more we haven't dicovered yet, a viewer, that point of perception. If you are inclined to believe that there is something supernatural to ones existance like me you might like the thaught of that point of perception being something more, since just the existance of a movie doesn't imply the presence of a viewer in the same point. I further like to think that all points of perception are really only one point of perception free from time and space dreaming our universe but this is getting of topic:3

The Selfhood, this is the real mystery
The study of the physical parts of consciousness is not the study of consciousness in its pure cognitive dimension.
The difficulty is that consciousness can not be investigated by the same consciousness, because abraction of what it studies is a reflection of the subject, but not consciousness itself. That´s why many philosophers thought interiorization is imposible...

They already did, we all know the brain controls it, think deep sleep, general anaesthesia, when we smash our skulls in, every time our brains decrease in electrical activity, every time the brain does something weird, we always lose consciousness, I wonder why? Hmm 🤔🤔
I think that your brain and my brain is like a computer and our consciousness is like a computer screen. You turn the screen off, so technically, you're fast asleep but as long as the computer is still plugged in, you will likely find that the information is still there, stored, just like our brain, information is still there, but only for as long as the brain is still working. Once you pull the plug from the computer, once you completely shut down a highly, powerful, biological computer, than it's likely that all the information will still be there but will cease to exist, go nowhere basically because the computer/brain is no longer in working capacity. This is what I think anyways
