The comments on this video are so intelligent that I STOPPED watching the video and started reading many comments before returning to the video. Thank you, guys.
No they are not. At least most of the comments I read are just stating vague hypothesis without any kind of reference to proof; ideas that somehow sound nice to them but actually are just pseudoscientific 'attractive' stuff. If you are going to talk about metaphysical ideas, don't state them aa a fact.
Merveil Meok those philosophical comments are retarded. a bunch of cunts talking about some bullshit no one knows. these philosophers need to get a life. they are not scientist. they're just losers
john you John Why so unnecessarily harsh? Aren't we allowed to have a personal opinion? You really need to relax John. Talk to someone please, you sound like you have anger issues.
I feel the exact opposite way. Frankly, it's further reducing my faith in humanity. Nobody knows the answer, and nobody here is going to figure it out with a very 'clever' comment.
"Science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature [consciousness], for in the final analysis we ourselves are part of the mystery we are trying to solve." - Max Planck
I am not sure consciousness exists. It's just a state with heightened sensory information, in constrast to for eg sleep or in a coma. They say consciousness resides in the brain. Again, I am not sure. Let's say you lost all your body totally, only your brain is left in a container, and we manage to keep it alive by giving it oxygen and the nutrients that it needs, but no other inputs since there is no body, are you still conscious? I would think not.
My neurologist and I were talking about how the brain works and all of its inner functions. She said that science knows a lot about the brain. I asked her, "Do you think we will ever figure out how the brain works completely?" She said, " I don't think we were ever meant to." Profound statement and absolutely true. The brain is a mystery. I don't think that science will ever completely figure it out. Besides that, when science learns something, something else pops up. The brain is mysterious and beautiful. It is us. We are looking out at the world through a set of peripherals. Who we really are is encased in a dark, protective, skull.
Maybe a super AI will be able to figure it out in the future, somehow. But specifically when it comes to the hard problem of consciousness, I just have no idea how it's possible to figure that out. Like why is there an experience in the first place? How does consciousness arise? Clearly the brain's processes have something to do with it, but I wonder if we will ever be able to get a clear and precise answer to that question.
to know how the brain works in detail we first would need to know every aspect of quantum physics, and thats something that we still can't clearly grasp
Well i hope that wont be true. Like man just imagining a world where we understand the human brain our first babyyyy steps in understanding it all is ultimately mind-boggling.
Best analogy for consciousness that I've heard is that it is like a TV set. We see a monitor showing sounds, colors, images, emitting senses that we can perceive. However if we tried to take the TV apart to see where the images are coming from, all that we're left with is bits and pieces, when really the images are coming from the radio waves being transmitted through the antennas. Perhaps this is a spiritual outlook on consciousness, but as my friend Mukesh formerly said, it's food for thought.
So, you would say consciousness is like the product of all the mechanical workings of a TV set, the outcome is colour picture and sound. But the inner workings are all man made mechanics. So you are saying consciousness IS a product of the brain ( sorry if I sound rude I don't mean to I'm trying to understand your argument) The way humans are trying to make other realities with VR, 3D holograms/film/TV is making another reality, when we dream it's another reality. Consciousness is being aware and responding to a situation, so being able to build a reality that one can be conscious in is one step in being able to understand life consciousness. !?
But now, you have dived into deepee waters. You are no longer trying to define consciousness but the origin of consciousness. If consciousness evolved then the origin of consciousness would be the origin of life.
BINGO! Unfortunately it seems that many if not all in the field of consciousness seem dead set on ignoring all evidence that consciousness exists outside/beyond the brain. However many recent medical studies into NDEs are showing very conclusive evidence that it does - that the brain is merely a receiver/filter for helping our consciousness sense, perceive and make sense of the 3D realm the brain resides in. Your analogy is excellent.
@@TheNightWatcher1385 That correct, I didnt understand her reply also. the statement was that, we can not figure out conscious in brain, as we can't find where images and sounds in a TV are formed inside opening inside dismantling the pieces , Tv is simples receptor mechanic that put in place a system that make images and sound come alive. I believe that no matter how manipulate the brain inside, looking each parts of it , they will not be able to find the found of conscious there, it come from outside. The brains is receptor.
It seems highly unlikely to me that humans would develop consciousness while all other animals don't have it. I think it's more likely that consciousness follows a spectrum and is simply related to awareness of the outside world and of how it changes.
I find it highly unlikely that animals don't have consciousness. What they don't have is an experience of consciousness that matches our own. That presupposes that our interpretation of reality is the "right" one, or, the only "right" one. In fact, our senses are only aware of an infinitesimal aspect of our own environment. How can we measure 1/10 of 1% of a thing and then claim that it is the entire thing?
All animals have and experience consciousness, in the sense that when they perceive a threat or danger to their existence, they avoid it or take measures to protect themselves, and when they do not, they take measures to procreate. But the starkest difference, and maybe the biggest and ONLY difference between man and an animal is that man has the ability to turn the mind's eye inwards and self-reflect, to ask deep questions about the meaning and origins of not only his existence, but existence of the universe itself.
Many animals have the ability to self - reflect but prefer to spend their time eating vegetation. They don't as a result end up anxious, depressed etc like humans. She we start eating grass as an antidote?
this is not the consciousness that we’re discussing. This goes as the easy problem of consciousness, how an animal detects a threat and how they act upon it etc.. This can be explained by brain and sensory functions. The hard problem is why (in human’s case) we have awareness of such things, you have an experience of what is going on. Idk if you get what i mean
I personally believe that consciousness created the universe and not the other way around. It would explain why things are relative to the viewer, why perception is different for everyone
@sourabh_mandlik alot of people don't understand that but it's true. Consciousness is the act of having a subjective experience, it is always the same.
this is just labels. From perspective all of the universe, its a way of changing matter from one state into another. There is no suffering, there is just process
The really curious thing is that we have a level of consciousness that transcends merely surviving. We have a level of consciousness that allows us to enjoy and appreciate the level of consciousness we have. Maybe that's the universes way of telling us to be happy.
Right now I am in the state of consciousness that is transcend and to merely surviving important inclusion of whatever lsd is doing to allow my brain to be conscious in this way which under normal circumstances I would not be able to understand
That is so profound and unexplainable to someone who isn’t on the same conscious (consciousness) field or conscious (surviving as a animal who isn’t actually conscious but thinks he is
@@jedmclachlan2147 I know what you mean brother, lol. I was truly mind blown when I discovered that it was possible for consciousness to be like that the first time I tried it. I hope psychedelics will help us learn more about consciousness in general, and if nothing else, then it can certainly teach you stuff about your own consciousness.
we are always fully conscious because our brains work in miraculous ways. even when we are asleep our brain still works. that's why we can actually do anything and everything subconsciously
It seems as if consciousness is the only state we will ever experience; If we're not conscious, we don't experience. Trying to apply the concept of reality as one true state I believe causes pain and denial in us. That there is something more real out there, that we cannot experience. If there is, we would never be able to know about it purely of its nature, if there isn't, well alright, we will know about it eventually. Experience and consciousness is required to define itself. Trying to define it as something that we cannot experience or imagine is therefore impossible.
NOT IMPOSSIBLE... AS GOD IS NOT LIMITED NEITHER ARE WE... ALL IS POSSIBLE... WE HAVE TO KNOW.... NOT JUST BELIEVE... WE WERE MADE IN THE CREATORS IMAGE...RIGHT🤗
I think some confusion comes in because , a.-there could be more than 1 kind of consciousness. b-way more than 5 senses & way more than one reality and how that works. Earth life, is one kind of reality, or pehaps more than one kind, it depends (who knows?) Considering all of that, and local vs. nonlocal consciousness and where does it originate? we are always just guessing.
As combat veteran idk why but im back in school and have been seeking the same! Its like my goal to find an answer. If there is any. If not i would like to know
I read an article on how an artifical intelligence will help explain the human conscious. This study could be on how we learn behaviors based on our understanding and perspective. It could also explain how memories help shaped the brain's ability to be aware or surrounding and the critical claim of survival.
The ability to enjoy things like Art, music and film is what boggles me. Our ability to explain the world around us, mystify, de-mystify, and construct reality is what leaves me thinking about why is consciousness the way it is, Why and how has it been decided that these things were necessary for survival. There is no need for these things in our lives but yet, here we are. The complexity in which we perceive the world just makes me think that there is more to it. There is no need for such complexity and superfluous existence. We could do without half the stuff we experience/feel but yet here we are. With all....this. I am sure science will reverse engineer and explain a lot of things in my lifetime. But there is the burning question that occurs to me in my quiet moments. Why is there even life/evolution and succession of things that work in harmonic force together? It is like a machine learning algorithm that continues to grow more efficient over time. My human pea brain will never understand such things and while it is great to live life by the rules of science. You can also live by supposition within reason. That there is a great unknown and in the age of reason we are too quick to say what is without evidence can be dismissed. I like to be open to possibilities and I veer on the side of rationale. That yes this existence will end and so will my consciousness. But then I think why am I? Why is this? Intelligent design, it may not be as there are plenty of ridiculous flaws in our bodies and other species. But design there is nonetheless. Consciousness has a higher meaning I believe and so does the universe. I live in the here and now. What I can experience, touch, feel, and think. But me telling someone even 50 years ago the concept of a smartphone, they would laugh and say that's something out of a sci-fi. Everything is not possible till it is possible. Be open-minded and be hopeful it is what has gotten us this far.
Consciousness could be another force like gravity or electromagnetism that exists only in biological beings and manifests itself as a brain. Kind of like how energy tends to manifest itself as a wave, consciousness moulds itself as the most stable entity possible and in this case this object that consciousness tends to mould into using available resources on earth is the brain. Say this force were to go to a metallic planet, then if thermodynamically possible, the consciousness will manifest as a metallic brain instead (like a transformer). This consciousness force could be why brains developed independently in different parts of the world (and maybe the universe), in that no matter where you are, as long as the right matter is available consciousness will manifest as a self aware entity.
can't remember the exact quote by Carl Sagan. It's something like "we are a way for the universe to experience itself". Thus maybe it's inevitable that eventually consciousness will manifest itself in the form of complex neurons and sensory receptors to experience the universe.
Why would consciousness, a phenomenon that exists in one species of animal on one planet (as far as we know), be a fundamental force of nature, universally? That's a really anthropocentric view on all this.
case close would happen to a creation that destroyed true creator if it was possible they cease to exist and it reverts back to normal state meaning nothing till it reforms again
1:37 - But they do not both agree on that in the sense that consciousness *only* arises in the brain. This has been questioned by the ancient Greeks, Renaissance figures such as Bruno, Cardano, Patrizi, then later by Spinoza, Leibniz, Fechner, Bergson, James, Whitehead, Bertrand Russell, Galen Strawson, et al. The view that consciousness, or some form of sentience, is and was universal is called panpsychism. Christoph Koch figures prominently here - even he has self-identified as a panpsychist (2012).
liknmylife conciousness can definitely not exist without brain....since if there is no brain thete would be no memory....and without memory no conciousness can exist
liknmylife all i was saying was that conciousness can definetely not exist without memory....suppose u have no memory....can u expirience anything ...no...withoit memory nothing can be expirienced and there are evidences to suggest that memory exists within brain...so conciousness cannot exist without brain
When someone dreams, he is experiencing the dream (so there is active consciousness at play). But later on, that dream can be lost because the memory of it is lost. That doesn't mean there was no consciousness during the lost dream, as it can be tested that people have experiences during the REM phase.
Sometimes i suspect that my consciousness is the *only* that exists. All you people are just puppets in my world, playing a script along, providing the reality with wich i interact...
The best bit : "Consciousness is nothing more than a cognitive illusion...similar to how desktop of our laptops work as a user friendly interlace, that simplifies and distorts, the complicated processes going on inside " Food for thought.
+Mukesh Kumar The problem with that analogy is it doesn't account for the actual awareness of said illusion. You can say x is an illusion but that would not account for why the phenomenon of sentience of said illusion is happening.
Mukesh Kumar Yes but your awareness (experience) of the dream (illusion) was real. You confuse consciousness (awareness) for the very thing you are being conscious of (dream).
+Apostate Apologetics This thread reminds me of a talk given by a parblind philosopher at Yale titled "veridical hallucinations." Which are illusions (delusions?) that are a function of visual misperceptions but which the brain perceives as real...
Consciousness is a distributed brain function. That’s why it is hard to pinpoint. Different parts of the brain send, collect and evaluate sensory information what we collectively describe as being self-aware and conscious. Just like any other brain function, consciousness evolved into existance because it has survival benefits compared to not having it.
"Consciousness is nothing more than a cognitive illusion". And what causes the illusion? Saying its an illusion doesn't solve the problem. It merely avoids and extends it because you can't explain it.
***** One things for sure: if you don't think it exists you'll never be able to find it. And you won't look either. Better to look and find nothing than never bother to look. That's science.
I'm with you, I think that directly reducing experience to the non-experiential is absurd. Alternatively saying that experience emerges as a property of complexity in the brain is a magical and unparsimonious explanation.
nickolasgaspar It should also be said that throughout history, proponents of material explanations have been remarkably good at explaining away experience ;)
To me, consciousness seems so simple. It is a 2 part process in the brain that repeats over and over again(even while we sleep). Part#1 - We attempt to answer the question "What is going on?". Part#2 - We attempt to answer the question "What should I do?". Part#1 is all about using our senses, our memories and our reasoning. Part#2 is all about taking action(or not). The learning aspect of this is about a summation of wisdom(memories + rational).
@@nik8099 There a few aspects of consciousness. Only one of these aspects is my definition. There are more important aspects like the consequences of this feedback loop. Also more important is how this system ever got started. I think it came about as the result of simple life trying to survive.
I agree that your way of saying this is a form of of consciousness, but more for the primal form of consciousness. You cant say that the human consciousness exist out of 2 parts. We are able to reflect and behave a type of way because we are consciouss of ourselves and the world around us. Your definition would come closer to the consciousness off a fish in the sea.
Yes, alot of times, just happened to me a week ago, i was seeing myself as wierd and as a stranger, and it was the longest ever, happened like for 30 seconds, i was amazed, literally.
***** It's not an assumption to make but it is unwise to rule it out either, because we could be closing off a door of inquiry. A small but growing movement in physics is proposing that the reason we have consistently failed to find a unified theory of reality is because we have not taken the role of consciousness into account, i.e. that it maybe be integral to the mechanics of the universe itself. Even Dennett faces interesting questions he cannot explain. For instance, because research shows that the more you tell people they have no free will the more apathetic they become, he tells people that you should avoid telling vulnerable people they have no free will. But if free will truly is an illusion, then why would telling them they have none change their behaviour at all?
***** I don't think that's enough of an explanation. We don't know what the laws of physics are as regards consciousness, because we can't actually measure it directly. The first question directly impacts the second. If it turns out that consciousness is indeed not just a product of brain function, then that could have all sorts of implications for what we think it is and how it works.
Your consciousness comes from outside "you". Youre def not your body, thats ego. You are spirit having a human experience. Consciousness is, always was, forever will be. Enjoy the ride! You are but a spark of youre true essence down here in 3d. Youre here to remember youre the creator. LOVE
How did I get so little from this video - it feels like a science report with no actual results to discuss, and just throws around words and conversations working with the people in the field
Forget about brains. If you wanna get an answer to the question, you should explore consciousness in consciousness. This can be done in meditation. The question "What is consciousness" has no verbal answer, because the question only allows answers describing "something", but consciousness isn't something. Therefore, the answer you can find in meditation is not told by words, it is told by silence.
Consciousness is not separable from its contents. In order to be conscious you must be conscious OF something. If you are looking for something you believe to exist called "pure consciousness", what you may find is some state of mind that you will decide satisfies your criteria to be called "pure consciousness", but in reality it will be just another state of mind - still conscious OF something. In that case something abstract.
Bob Aldo first sane comment here. Lets take your thought further and say that content is low level: any sensory input (streams of electrochemical signals generated through sensory organs or even just other parts of the brain). The fact of being aware of input coming in already makes up consciousness.
UbuntuPvP According to Giulio Tononi's Integrated Information Theory (IIT), integrated information is essentially a unified dynamic field of data that interacts and behaves as a single entity via downward causation (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23165867 ). When simply applied to computer science, it's merely a global nonlinear neural network. However, when applied to much more sophisticated fields such as psychology and especially quantum mechanics, it's a whole other system on its own (arxiv.org/abs/1405.0879 ).
UbuntuPvP Matter and energy are derived from spacetime. And of course, this was the fundamental framework of reality until scientists realized through quantum mechanics and its application to quantum gravity that spacetime _itself_ was derived from a newly discovered layer known as quantum information (www.preposterousuniverse.com/blog/2015/05/05/does-spacetime-emerge-from-quantum-information/ ). Of course, I can speculate that there is a final layer directly connected to information, which would be a fundamental metaphysical layer known as ontic structural relations, which is the primacy of reality (being itself is intrinsically derived from abstract patterns and relationships).
I love studying about consciousness and theories about it. How do we know its the end all/ be all though? maybe there is something beyond consciousness?
I liked the part of accidental discover of consciousness. Shouldn't the same cells be present in other living things, like lab rat on which tests could be performed upon?
The brain is the hardware that houses the spirit. When the brain dies, the spirit continues. Our consciousness, our sense of self, will continue forever.
In September 2018, I bled out (post surgery), had a heart attack from catastrophic blood loss and died. I was “dead” for more than ten minutes. During that time, I was more “alive” than I’ve ever been. What is consciousness? What is this body? What is life? And what is our place in the whole question? I still don’t know but I do know this: We’re here to bear witness to Creation and to love.
The brain does not generate consciousness, it receives it. Consciousness is non-local, entangled and coherent - A unified field of universal consciousness.
Consciousness is awareness, Which is an awakened state of our existence, our brain turns it on or we start becoming consciouss of our sorroundings at around 4 years old, think of your earliest memory or first thought that's when you became aware or your consciouss flipped on. Look into the mirror for 10 minutes everyday and you'll see your conscuisness or existence. Awareness is consciousness. It's our higher intelligence that separates us from other animals or plants, that live and act simply on instinct.
First we must discover how one cell multiply in a whom to become a functioning human being. From where it get instructions to generate complicated organs at precise places with precise dimensions. This higher level consciousness as compared to other forms is what makes us different from other living beings.
What if consciousness is a force of nature like electricity? What if the biological body is just like the hardware of a machine and without the electrical force it can't function. Just like how a toaster can be unplugged and plugged and how if the hardware of the toaster breaks down over time then the toaster or body in our case ceases to function. I don't know anything about advanced physics so i couldn't mend a theory to this but i think its cool to think that we are all biological manifestations of a single consciousness and depending on our biology we have different traits and interests kind of how machines with different hardware perform different tasks and specializations. I hope we get to the bottom of this within my lifetime because it would be cool to know for sure what makes us be.
+C4nadian For the most part I think your post is spot on except for the "single consciousness". A software has to execute each code at its physical limitation. A processor in your computer is really just a calculator crunching very very large numbers which arbitrarily represent things that are meaningful to us. its the translation of our thoughts and ideas into absolute 1s and 0s. The reason this is a problem is that a single consciousness would have to pass over each object one at a time processing each important aspect of that object as it passes. This would mean our reality runs in a stutter-step. No two things ever change at the same time. I believe this is not true, but I cannot prove that. Its possible that we do exist in a stutter step reality but we were just programmed in a way that we wouldnt notice that. However, we already have multithreaded programs and processors that have multiple cores, and we are only at the earliest stages of quantum computing research. You could have several self-learning programs running at the same time on the same computer, this would be much much more effeicient.
I do understand advanced phisics and there are only 4 fundamental forces - electromagnetic, gravity, weak interaction (holds atomic nucleus together) and strong interaction (holds protons and neutrons together ). A force of consciousness? a force of awareness, a force of a sense of self? nonsensical in this reality.
Consciousness is Gods awareness of its self. It is all there is. Its name is I am. I am not religious person, but I know things. Thank you. So be aware of who you really are boys and girls.😉👏
Consciousness is like using a computer to analyse data and relay the information back to you, in a human's case, the brain, the mind, the senses and the body are part of the computer which analyses different tasks that people are involved with and feeds the information back to them so they can decide what to do, the better the computer the more imformative it is, the better condition the brain, mind, senses and body the more informative it is, the more aware one is of their own system the more consciousness one becomes which can help them transcend their physical and mental limitations to potentially reach the ultimate consciousness of liberation and enlightenment.
Reality is the physical form of consciousness. The human body is a flesh and bone vehicle for the spirit, an avatar for consciousness. As the Bible says "We live in God and God lives in us" we are all one in the same. Love always.
That is not quite what it says: "For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring." Acts 17:28
A spirit has never been demonstrated, so there's no reason to believe it exists. If your brain gets damaged/destroyed you as person are altered/ceases to exist.
THE THEORY OF MIND, 'get in another person's shoes, feel what they're feeling, see yhe world from THEIR perspective' . I wonder if research is done on the effects of cannabis related to this subject. I can tell you, smoking cannabis does make you extremely conscious of yourself AND others, you can literally feel what someone you know really well felt/feels in a certain situation. Cannabinoid receptors are all over the brain, and cannabinoids in Cannabis do activate those receptors in many different ways. But the taboo on cannabis will last and prevent serious science from exploiting it. But it does have a potential to make your mind go out of your body and be very empathic, modifying your state of consciousness. The grandfather of Cannabis research, Raphael Mechoulam, thinks sensibility to certain cannabinoids/the amount of certain cannabinoid receptors in the brain are what defines one's personality, the difference in personality between me and you could be linked to differences in cannabinoid receptors in the brain. (remember, our body constantly releases endocanabinoids for countless reasons in the brain)
giam 108 Consciousness is a mystery only for evolutionists. They keep saying they don’t know what it is, because they reject the idea of God and can’t find a “scientific” explanation for it. How could consciousness and this amazing world come from nothing? How dumb is this idea!?
We are the only product of the Universe, made by the Universe, that can change it in a way that the Universe can't do itself. While entropy and heat death occur as a constant, and destruction and dispersion wreck havoc; we busy creatures are creating order from all of the chaos. Consciousness is just that -- the ability to create order from chaos.
A wise man once said: looking for consciousness in the brain is exactly like looking for the announcer inside the radio receiver. The whole body is conscious, but the brain is like a central processing unit and acts as the liaison or "adapter" between the ACTUAL consciousness and the physical body and the physical reality. The bottom line: to think that your consciousness is merely produced and stored in your brain (and is only a bio-electric & chemical construct) is extremely infantile and limited.
Bold statement with no proof or supporting evidence. You can lose any body part and still be mentally whole but lose a gram of brain in the wrong place and become a vegetable. This claim is nonsense. Consciousness is just in the brain.
Question is, why is our consciousness connected only to certain parts of body. For example, our brain receives signals from and is controlling heart, stomach, liver, kidneys and all other organs. Even though our consciousness is most likely inside of brain, it can't feel nor control those processes. If nobody told you you have heart, you wouldn't even know there is something in your chest, that pumps blood through your blood vessels, yet your brains knows it and controls it. This is in my opinion one of the weirdest aspects of consciousness, apart from filosophical aspects.
I'm a doctor, so here's how I would explain you this as per my knowledge about brain. Why you cannot control your heart or kidneys or guts, goes down to how we are wired. There are different levels of wiring in our body. Different levels of the NERVOUS SYSTEM. The one that controls the visceral organs like the Heart, Stomach, Kidneys and all is the AUTONOMOUS NERVOUS SYSTEM. It just makes and maintains the Basic Level of Balance in our body to function properly. Where as the PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, which wires the sensory organs gives you the subjective sensations like Touch,Taste,Sight,Audition,Smell to name the 5 basic senses. Whereas the CONSCIOUSNESS is something which something that runs above these basic levels. Something like how Firmwares, Kernels, and the Operating System works on your computer. I hope this analogy helps you understand that. BRAIN is definitely the most beautiful and complex structure in the universe.
I think consciousness naturally arises when groups of transistors (either computer transistors or our neurons) get more and more complicated. I think that our minds in general are just organic ai's and looking at it through that perspective makes things a lot easier. So many people want to give some grandiose reasoning to consciousness and humanity, but the simple fact of the matter is that we are nothing to the universe, and as such there's nothing grandiose about any of our behavior or abilities. Consciousness is merely a highly complex ai's natural ability to understand the past, itself, the present and the relation between those concepts in pursuit of increasing efficiency.
It's definitely some of the processes in the brain that creates our consciousness, but exactly how it happens, that's a mystery. I would however be very skeptical about it being just a result of something like transistors, since I think it's possible to create an AI that's smarter than us (and so it could be argued that it's more complicated), but without consciousness. I also wonder if we will ever be able to build an AI and confirm that it's conscious. Because in order to really confirm whether it is conscious, we probably need to answer the hard problem of consciousness first.
There should be some definite guide lines from the experts and scientists, like Grammar of a Language, how to use the Ladder of Consciousness for further exploration and Study.
Everything that exists has a conscious cause, and continues to exist by virtue of that consciousness. *"I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness." --Max Planck, the father of quantum theory*
Thats like asking -- what is a tree ? We can put together a detailed description of the tree ,but we will never know what it is ,we could say tree is energy but that doesnt tell us what tree is .Similarly we will never know what consciousness is . However it can be seen by those who can see it .Thats as far as we can go .
Our consciousness is a small spec in the ocean of an infinite, pure, blissful and eternal "Universal Consciousness" that exists. Once we are able to merge our consciousness in that universal consciousness by removing our mind, we call it "Enlightenment".
it's completely impossible to ever know whether a being is conscious, in fact we even assume that everyone else is conscious because we know we are. also why can't consciousness be a spectrum?
It's impossible from a scientific standpoint to know whether anyone is conscious. Materialist scientists love to add layers and layers of pseudo-complexity over the central issue that they cannot point to consciousness and they will never even know where to begin to describe what it is.
Sure, but we don't "know" *anything*. We don't *know* that The Matrix isn't really a documentary. At some point we need to forget about knowing things for certain, and accept the closest we can get is an educated guess. Still, I agree that "consciousness is a spectrum" (probably).
the only thing that can answer this is.......God.....and I'm not a man of religion whatsoever but the fact that scientist do not know when life was created, we understand the RNA world and where life derived from but actually the moment life was born? Nope, the consciousness? Nope. These are too complex and people here saying it might be energy or etc. Makes zero sense, the fact that we are aware like aware. Why me? Only God can answer this....
+MRxROID Based on what, "holy" books written by people hundreds and thousands of years ago? They supposed to know any better than us? You may not practice what the books tell you to do, how to govern your life, but you do believe in what it says about the existence of "God". So I ask you, Why? Why does it have to be "God", a single entity? Do you acknowledge that the universe is almost infinitely vast? If so, why does this "God" only revolve around us humans, who are but an insignificant speck within a speck? To pursue science is to constantly search for the answers, and constantly make speculations, however wild they are. Most importantly, it is to admit to one simple phrase, "we don't know". Is that too hard to do? One should never jump to conclusions and should always look at things objectively and with a grain of salt.
5:32 We can't did everything without consciousness because then we will be like fishes or insects with completely predetermined programm. Consciousness is useful in it's evolutionary niche, it helps us to understand reality in it's complexity to make more complex desicions. And you can't make these decisions without consciousness.
I am just waves forever crashing into emptiness and nothingness for no reason. I know no objective purpose to my life. Any subjective purpose that I create is arbitrary and is the result of desires and values over which I have no real control anyway. I know nothing about the truth of the world, that is if any truth even exists at all. I cant even begin a pursuit of truth as how can I begin to look for that which i don't know? And how would I know whether i found it? As I watch my mother glued to the bachelorette and my father return from a 9-7 job I realize that in this respect i am born from parents as ignorant as I, just as they were born from parents as ignorant as them and on it goes back to our inorganic origins. Any guise of morality that remains in me does not serve me, but rather serves a herd mentality that has evolved to ensure collective survival. My morality serves no purpose but to perpetuate nothingness as that is what we all are. To me, suffering is as empty as pleasure which is as empty as success which is as empty as love. It is empty because at its base it is all reasonless, mindless chaos. Even writing this very text is a futile exercise because through the necessity of its own interpretation by the reader, the meaning that I attempted to imbune in it will be lost and altered. The only reason that I stand here alive is because I have an in tact survival instinct which those who suicided before me did not. What kind of existence is this? Ahhh fuck it.
Alberturkey54 you are what you live, see outside off all this, is you! but in a form which we dont comprehend, everything is a mixture the universe is a soup of dna inside the creation, thats the reason we live with time but outside, time is none existent atleast for the outer form we have. we all are one, without a dout we all are one but we see/feel/live from many diffrent sources all at the same exact time because we are inside... but outside... 😰well you know, (you dont know) 😂
We are here for a reason. We are the cause and the effect of something we aren't aware of. Without us, we wouldn't be here reading this reply (or me typing this). Think of it as a group project, wherein the outcome is the present and the members are us. Even if an individual person is missing, the project would be a failure and different from the present that we experience now (alternate reality). That is why others debate whether free will is true or just an illusion. Yet, how can we be free in what we do, if we are also not free in what we want? Because our decisions listens from past experiences and affects the future too. It's an endless domino effect.

Ha! How amusing. It's not only mentioned a second time, but it's actually spelled out in front of you. "Consciousness begins in the brain". Anyone else watching this get the feeling that someone's really doing their best at driving a point home? That's because, as strange as it may sound, Consciousness is not produced by the brain. And this piece represents Scientism, not Science. And they have Daniel Dennet, of all people, to consult. Try reading *Irreducible Mind~Toward A Psychology For The 21st Century*
0xygenIsOverRated Another fine example of how pitiful and pathetic the combo of arrogance and ignorance. You "just looked up that book" rather than actually reading it,....and you know it all already. Now go and actually read a book and educate yourself rather than wasting all that oxygen. lol
The EM interactions among matters/particles can produce many fascinating yet mysterious phenomena, such as rainbows, thunder&lightning, blue/red sky...... These took the human brains millions of years to figure out the underlying process, most of time it's just awe and religion, superstition that prevailed. It's a significant milestone for humans(or part of) to figure out that humans are merely matters(parts of universe) that have a complex brain which generates 'consciousness' or just 'human soul'. And subsequently to regard themselves as scientific objects rather than special creatures related to deity, which was a product of human brains as well. This is a significant step for humans and the impact is shown through brain science and its new findings which will progress this specie to a whole new level.
you've confused 'consciousness' with 'consciousness of self' again, common mistake, anthropocentrism motivated. Dogs, cats, horses, pigs, cattle, etc etc are all conscious, but most animals are not conscious of self, and not sensible of another's self.
Dick Hamilton Precisely, I would say that humans have great potential as a living organism, but things like Archaea have a really good track record in terms of survival.
The brain doesn’t create consciousness, but consciousness created the brain, the most complex physical form on Earth, for its expression. Just as when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
What if nobody actually exists. For example, everyone reading this is actually a part of my own life that my brain has made up for me. Also for example, if I hang out with someone, they don't exist until I actually see them. Once they leave my field of view, they're not there anymore until I see the, again. Interesting to think about
That thing that you are describing is called solipsism, but there is an argument against it. The fact that no matter what you think, when you, for example, lose too much blood you will die. Indifferent the fact, whether you have conscious or not or think as I said in solipsism.
can neuroscience measure neural correlates specific to different conscious perceptions or experiences; such as taste of vanilla, color of red, and others?
The comments on this video are so intelligent that I STOPPED watching the video and started reading many comments before returning to the video. Thank you, guys.
right
No they are not.

@dadt - The brain could still be dreaming or hallucinating, and those are both conscious states insofar as they are experienced.
@dadt - It could also be thinking or remembering.
Mabye it's not science that needs to figure it out sometimes just sitting and thinking will do it for you
We are not brain, actually
So you are saying consciousness IS a product of the brain ( sorry if I sound rude I don't mean to I'm trying to understand your argument)
The way humans are trying to make other realities with VR, 3D holograms/film/TV is making another reality, when we dream it's another reality. Consciousness is being aware and responding to a situation, so being able to build a reality that one can be conscious in is one step in being able to understand life consciousness. !?
leela I think he’s more saying that consciousness is filtered through the brain but originates from outside it.
This is hands down the best comment section I have ever seen! So many great theories.
Trying to understand consciousness is basically the brain trying to understand itself. It's pretty amusing if you think about it.
I'd go further and say it's the universe trying to understand itself

Sentience isn't all that amusing. It's paradoxes are though.
Claude Alpha i'd say it's God's conscious creation trying to understand itself
It seems highly unlikely to me that humans would develop consciousness while all other animals don't have it. I think it's more likely that consciousness follows a spectrum and is simply related to awareness of the outside world and of how it changes.
I agree
Humans are not the only conscience beings......animals are conscience as well maybe not as high as ours or maybe or maybe higher
Intelligence may well be proportional to conscious awareness complexity.
Animals do have it ?? A better one possibly
Je me demande si les animaux ni songent pas ...
Many animals have the ability to self - reflect but prefer to spend their time eating vegetation. They don't as a result end up anxious, depressed etc like humans. She we start eating grass as an antidote?
@@brianstockwell4069maybe we should try smoking it
this is not the consciousness that we’re discussing. This goes as the easy problem of consciousness, how an animal detects a threat and how they act upon it etc.. This can be explained by brain and sensory functions. The hard problem is why (in human’s case) we have awareness of such things, you have an experience of what is going on. Idk if you get what i mean
@@brianstockwell4069 Animals act by instinct, they never go beyond it, not like human, we go beyond instinct, that why the brain created the cortex.
I personally believe that consciousness created the universe and not the other way around. It would explain why things are relative to the viewer, why perception is different for everyone
Because every body has it own brain that inherited wired of differents culture. We can't enter someone brain to know what they feel.

The really curious thing is that we have a level of consciousness that transcends merely surviving. We have a level of consciousness that allows us to enjoy and appreciate the level of consciousness we have. Maybe that's the universes way of telling us to be happy.

I read an article on how an artifical intelligence will help explain the human conscious. This study could be on how we learn behaviors based on our understanding and perspective. It could also explain how memories help shaped the brain's ability to be aware or surrounding and the critical claim of survival.
I agree discovering the Universe and new technologies are very important
But knowing our Intelligence more and Consciousness are priorities too 👍
The technology is an extension of our consciousness.
Yes
As far as you know though, is there a difference between the universe you perceive, and your consciousness?
Nice concept mate. You could be onto something there.
Wow, never really thought of consciousness as an energy but the pieces of the puzzle do make literal sense in your theory, bravo !!!
OMG English is not my language, but I sense you are onto something here. Could you, or someone else, please rephrase this? Thanks a lot.
can't remember the exact quote by Carl Sagan.
We are pure consciousness having a material experience, with our Creator holding it all together.
Yes.

When someone dreams, he is experiencing the dream (so there is active consciousness at play). But later on, that dream can be lost because the memory of it is lost. That doesn't mean there was no consciousness during the lost dream, as it can be tested that people have experiences during the REM phase.

+Mukesh Kumar The problem with that analogy is it doesn't account for the actual awareness of said illusion. You can say x is an illusion but that would not account for why the phenomenon of sentience of said illusion is happening.
Apostate Apologetics hmm. There are other 'aware illusions' too, no? Like say lucid dreaming
+Apostate Apologetics exactly
Consciousness is a distributed brain function. That’s why it is hard to pinpoint. Different parts of the brain send, collect and evaluate sensory information what we collectively describe as being self-aware and conscious. Just like any other brain function, consciousness evolved into existance because it has survival benefits compared to not having it.
A bit reductionist don’t you think?
Disagree. There had to be intelligence before intelligence could be created.
I think conciousness gives animals an advantage compared to animals with less conciousness, because they can predict them while being unpredictable.
"Consciousness is nothing more than a cognitive illusion". And what causes the illusion? Saying its an illusion doesn't solve the problem. It merely avoids and extends it because you can't explain it.

You seem a little too sure
@@nik8099 I welcome alternatives to this. I enjoy discussing issues like this.
@@dennistucker1153 Why do you take consciousness to be in the brain and reduced to senses, memories, reasons, and action?
@@nik8099 There a few aspects of consciousness. Only one of these aspects is my definition. There are more important aspects like the consequences of this feedback loop. Also more important is how this system ever got started. I think it came about as the result of simple life trying to survive.
I agree that your way of saying this is a form of of consciousness, but more for the primal form of consciousness. You cant say that the human consciousness exist out of 2 parts. We are able to reflect and behave a type of way because we are consciouss of ourselves and the world around us. Your definition would come closer to the consciousness off a fish in the sea.
Has anyone looked in the mirror for a couple minutes and just asked who am I? Felt like I was a stranger to myself it was such a strange feeling.

Leave others, we are all strangers to ourselves. It straight away puts us in a liberated state.
What if it is not a product of brain function?
*****
It's not an assumption to make but it is unwise to rule it out either, because we could be closing off a door of inquiry.
*****
I don't think that's enough of an explanation. We don't know what the laws of physics are as regards consciousness, because we can't actually measure it directly.
The first question directly impacts the second. If it turns out that consciousness is indeed not just a product of brain function, then that could have all sorts of implications for what we think it is and how it works.
I checked out Daniels ted talk and his points for this illusion were absolutely terrible. He used sensory deception to prove it which is wrong.

Because there is moon that can explain consciousness. As you said, just a bunch of words.
This has to be the most faux-philosophical comment I’ve ever seen haha
The most satisfactory explanation I have ever heard about this topic is in Mandukya Upanishad, that too in 7th verse to be more precise.
The univers is talking to itself thru everybody and everything all the time!
I find the heartbeat at the start really unsettling with headphones.
A realization I came to is we think we see & sense external reality but really experience a model built by our mind from sensory input.
Could consciousness be considered a soul or spirit? Thanks
Depends on how you define a soul or spirit.

Yes. More specifically, it is integrated information, otherwise known as a quantum field.

According to Giulio Tononi's Integrated Information Theory (IIT), integrated information is essentially a unified dynamic field of data that interacts and behaves as a single entity via downward causation (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23165867 ). When simply applied to computer science, it's merely a global nonlinear neural network. However, when applied to much more sophisticated fields such as psychology and especially quantum mechanics, it's a whole other system on its own (arxiv.org/abs/1405.0879 ).

Matter and energy are derived from spacetime.
"Is it a high level summary..."
Yes. It's as simple as that. The debate beyond that point is just fear of purposelessness and ultimately death.
I liked the part of accidental discover of consciousness. Shouldn't the same cells be present in other living things, like lab rat on which tests could be performed upon?
This presentation begs the question that matter is fundamental.
Was ur vision perfectly okay then? And what about ur sense of touch?
Wow what did you saw when you were dead?

The brain does not generate consciousness, it receives it. Consciousness is non-local, entangled and coherent - A unified field of universal consciousness.
"I get introspective and think about the brain and it's kind of like a universe within."
Micro Universe a reflexion mirror the Macro Universe...
It's our higher intelligence that separates us from other animals or plants, that live and act simply on instinct.
heighten awareness is consciousness on the physical level

Mike Watkins Interesting, to be honest i was just speculating while baked.
+C4nadian I always figured it was more to do with energy
Consciousness is Gods awareness of its self. It is all there is. Its name is I am. I am not religious person, but I know things. Thank you. So be aware of who you really are boys and girls.😉👏
People with Narcissistic personality disorder have a problem with the I AM you've mentioned.
Brahman.
The brain does not produce conciousness . The brain is IN conciousness . Its SILENT and STILL .
This programme is primarily based around a reductionism belief system.
I would suggest you look at the work of Stuart Hameroff and Sir Roger Penrose.
The state of being aware of and responsive to one's surroundings.
Reality is the physical form of consciousness. The human body is a flesh and bone vehicle for the spirit, an avatar for consciousness. As the Bible says "We live in God and God lives in us" we are all one in the same. Love always.
That is not quite what it says:
"For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring."
Acts 17:28
Hi, I was reading from 1 John chapter 4 verse 16 to 19 when I wrote this. But also read Ephesians chapter 4 verse 4, 6
(remember, our body constantly releases endocanabinoids for countless reasons in the brain)
can it get any more insane than the approach here? It is beyond rediculous. you certainly show your cards, Economist.
giam 108 Consciousness is a mystery only for evolutionists.
Consciousness is just that -- the ability to create order from chaos.
the universe is creation and destruction/ light and dark and never ending
Consciousness is a sphere of waves, a vibration source, an energy field. The rest of our brain is just an interface.
The contents of this channel are as good as it's filming!👌👌👌
A wise man once said: looking for consciousness in the brain is exactly like looking for the announcer inside the radio receiver.
The whole body is conscious, but the brain is like a central processing unit and acts as the liaison or "adapter" between the ACTUAL consciousness and the physical body and the physical reality.
The bottom line: to think that your consciousness is merely produced and stored in your brain (and is only a bio-electric & chemical construct) is extremely infantile and limited.
I agree 👍🏻
But why should we suspect that it's not the brain that's responsible for producing consciousness?
Bold statement with no proof or supporting evidence. You can lose any body part and still be mentally whole but lose a gram of brain in the wrong place and become a vegetable. This claim is nonsense. Consciousness is just in the brain.
@@Kanzu999we don’t suspect it. We know it.

Why is the Economist reporting on consciousness?
??? Evidently you're not very familiar with The Economist.
I always read the comments and find some amazing responses... and have gained such great propects...
Because in order to really confirm whether it is conscious, we probably need to answer the hard problem of consciousness first.
wtf i never got such a good boy pat for an MRI before...
The consciousness of the consciousness.
Did they say, “...until the problem of consciousness is solved...” Who would have thought consciousness was a ‘problem’? It’s an *odd* statement.
Trying to explain it away is the problem that hardcore materialists are facing
Thats like asking -- what is a tree ?
We can put together a detailed description of the tree ,but we will never know what it is ,we could say tree is energy but that doesnt tell us what tree is .Similarly we will never know what consciousness is .
However it can be seen by those who can see it .Thats as far as we can go .
Our soul is our consciousness

Still, I agree that "consciousness is a spectrum" (probably).
for all we know, im the only concious person in the universe
the only thing that can answer this is.......God.....and I'm not a man of religion whatsoever but the fact that scientist do not know when life was created, we understand the RNA world and where life derived from but actually the moment life was born?
It's an endless domino effect.
hahaha....just enjoy the moment man....by the way, you could be an awesome writer.

This is just materialism dogma which has no evidence.
you've confused 'consciousness' with 'consciousness of self' again, common mistake, anthropocentrism motivated. Dogs, cats, horses, pigs, cattle, etc etc are all conscious, but most animals are not conscious of self, and not sensible of another's self.

Indifferent the fact, whether you have conscious or not or think as I said in solipsism.
and yet your loved ones think and care about you all the time, Ironic eh?
