I used to play in that tunnel when I was a kid.

I believe the tunnel is still there, just covered over by a large metal sheet. The sheet sounds hollow inside, so I assume they never filled it and just covered it over.

What a sad site of dereliction; all that time, effort and money gone into building the railway and canal just left abandoned.
At least now the canal has been restored.
