To answer your questions It is hard to access because it's a part from a safety system, the BMW engineers are not stupid they have created that car for a pencil drawing, first these cars are not made to be repaired on the side of the road , second , that system can trace your car in case of stolen ( if you have that service paid) or better the emergency services can locate you're car when you will fall from a cliff and nobody will saw you 😉 . I don't side with them (BMW) . I try to make you to understand how these cars are working and how they are thought . Think about it. You will need to be more outraged on Apple , for example in they case you are completely left outside of your products you can't change the battery of an iPhone without special tools 😉 I don't even want to mention about the display replacement 😜

Ah yes…the most beautiful BMW ever made 😌 (aside from the 7 series of course 😝)
I recently successfully repaired the rattle in my F16’s tailgate by inspecting the clips - half were broken - and when I replaced them and realigned the latch everything was fine. The previous technician who worked on my car wasn’t as careful and thorough as you are. Thanks for always working carefully and ensuring the cars are better when you finish working on them.

Finally got around to replacing this battery as it was ok during the 'warmer' months of spring\summer, but as the colder months come it's started to report as failed again. It was a fairly easy job to do, most difficult was getting the coat hooks out as it's a fiddly job. Thanks for the guidance on this.

BMW - you have got to be kidding. I found this site because I have just started to get an intermittent warning. Started off with replace the battery and then downhill from there. Not any ordinary battery but some special BMW battery. And then not a simple matter of replacing it but you have to dismantle a lot of the interior. For god's sake, the error message even suggests that the battery charge will run out and need to be replaced - so why on earth do BMW put it somewhere so inaccessible.

@@MOvidiu Some fair points about the security aspect - but somewhat undermined that on some BMW models (like the F31) it is a simple matter of lifting the boot liner (not even any clips) and the units and battery box and there in plain sight.

Helpful vid - I have a BMW 220 Gran Tourer, roof is longer but I managed to replace the battery by just undoing the roof trim from the back rubber and easing it down gently M. Not much room to work with this way and wouldn’t have been able to do it without this vid detailing the release clip and how to lever off the battery cover.
No need to reset any warnings via OBD though they may still be logged but not displaying 👍👍

Nice, I have just had the warning pop up on gran tourer.
Did you just remove the two circular clips and easy the headliner down? From there I can see the modules just and get a hand to them, but I think trying to unclip the battery case will be tricky. Did you do anything else or just perseverance?

    • @mikeroden9269
      @mikeroden9269 14 днів тому

@ I removed the two circular pop pins holding the lining to the roof, eased the lining loose from the centre outwards. After feeling around for a while I worked out the clip to remove the module from the roof by sliding it towards the front of the vehicle. Once this was free I used my phone camera to identify which way the module was facing and where the battery cover was. All this was done with the module still at arms length as I didn’t want to remove the loom connectors. Once I determined the battery cover location a very small slotted screwdriver eased Dobbies the side of the cover released the battery cover - this was fiddly and required some pressure. Refitting was easier than I thought it would be and the roof lining went back in to place ok.

After reading another comment, I understand the logic behind the location and accessibility of the battery. My BMW is 5.5 years old and only has 40k miles on it. The dealer charges $900 to replace this. That's an eye watering amount of money for a tiny little battery that only takes 20 minutes to change. In contrast; I had my oil changed, microfilter (cabin) replaced, and new spark plugs, and that only cost $472 and took almost two hours...also at the dealer. I'm having a hard time reconciling the massive disparity between the two.
Update: Ordered the battery online, bought a cheap set of trim tools at the local parts store, and ordered an NT530 from Foxwell and only have $230 wrapped up in all of it. Already received the code scanner and verified it will clear the code. This particular battery doesn't need to be registered to the vehicle the way the engine battery does. Now I'm just waiting on the battery to arrive.

I had the problem on my X1 F48 2017 model. Assume it’s software have bugs.
Tested to call SOS after shows SOS system failure message, get through perfectly, which proves the system NOT failure. Used voice control coincidentally last week, the fault message disappeared dramatically, and didn’t back till today.
I rarely use voice control before, have tried to disconnect blue tooth device and reconnect from other youtube video, didn’t work well.
Can’t say it’s the solution, but cost nothing and worth a try.

X5 is under headliner, the roof antenna module is worse the shark fin has to be cut of for access to module which is plugged in to the telematics control box which holds the emergency battery, The antenna is faulty when the car can not locate on the navigation so best to replace battery and antenna module at the same time BEWARE DAMAGE IS SOME TIMES ENVITABLE WHEN CUTTING OF SHARK FIN AS THIS IS BONDED ON IN TO A SMALL RESESS ON ROOF OR HAS BEEN OF BEFORE AND TO MUTCH BONDING MATERIAL HAS BEEN USED. This then ends up a nightmare of a job as fin is stuck to the antenna which is screwed to the roof. GOOD LUCK

I don't want to make you like bmws, but if you work with them and understand them you will notice that many things that seem complicated and meaningless to a stranger will seem logical to you (and that module is put there not to be accessed very easily because through that module you can find the car and it can be used as an anti-theft / recovery system)

@@MOvidiu I totally agree with you. Don’t get confused by my randomly chosen nickname, I do like them very much. Drove a lot of them too with all kind of engines. E46, E90, E92, E60, E61, E70, F15, F10, F11, F02, F31, F25, G30 and I probably forgot to mention a few older ones. BMW builds exquisite daily drivers, as do other German manufacturers. To be honest I don’t have a favourite brand. Would probably go with the G31 540i, Merc W223 and 991 to fill my lottery garage. As long as it’s German. Please keep sharing incredible content, its always a joy to watch you working on those over-engineered beasts.

Hi Unfortunately not I claimed having had the same issue, I tried to claim on my extended warranty my car is only 4 years old. I was told that batteries are not covered in the Warranty so will need to pay just over 500 Pounds to have the battery replaced. Many thanks to the video for letting me know what is involved I can see doing DIY could result in problems and the question is will the message reset. So I guess I will need to pay for this repair and ask the question why changing the battery is such a mission could the unit have been better placed by BMW taking into consideration the battery didn't last very long and do we not get rechargeable batteries now days?
