We live in a suburb in Southern California, next to permanent open space (hills with many rocks, boulders, brush, trees).
I stopped using any chemicals (insecticides) in the small front yard many years ago. Since then, I have witnessed the natural balance return!! Adorable baby lizards eat ants & tiny crickets. Adult lizards eat larger crickets & other insects. Birds eat insects, including birds on the bushes eating insects. I was so happy as I started seeing that! We got rid of lawn & grass in long parking strip & went to xeriscaping ("desert" landscape, with in ground, drip irrigation where plants are, just to keep them healthy). Really enjoy the bits of open ground, small boulders, cacti, flowering plants, a few Palo verde trees, etc. Have cautioned my husband that we have created a snake oasis, under the trees & low bushes.
I was taught by my Mother to always look before putting hands or feet where I can't see. I also wear closed shoes & thick gloves, when I am able to do a little work outside.
I enjoy the yard more than ever. And yes, we are definitely in snake country. Lots of brush piles, packrat nests, & tasty rodents (other critters) in hills next door. In 25 years here, have only encountered 2 rattlesnakes.

Great work Bryan! My Uncle Vito was watching this with me and he does not handle snakes but suggested that we try stapling the cardboard of the trap to a solid piece of wood so that both of our hands are free. What do you think? Thank you for what you do! I send videos like this to the people I have trained to handle rattlesnakes for their continuing education. I now have 9 on my team from Morongo Valley to Wonder Valley. We can never have enough conscious and caring people like you and your team protecting our valuable wildlife! Amen!

I had a copperhead stuck with its head on a glue board. I worked for a pest control company in the midwest. We were not allowed to release anywhere. They wanted to take it back to the shop and not be painless about handling it, so I did the only thing I could at the time since my co workers would not have given it a more painless death.
I went and buried it near the office and quit later. It sucked. Wish I could have released it alive but with the manager being there, if I did that I'd have been fired and in his words 'blacklisted from pest control as letting one of these things go puts people at risk, no one would hire you.'

Poor little snake. Those traps are just horrific. If homeowners don't want messy kill traps, there are plenty of ideas for live traps. He was pretty chill for his bath. You can now hang out an official Rattlesnake Groomer sign. :) :) All kidding aside, I'm glad you were there so that little snake didn't perish.
For future refrence when you wash snakes off after getting them out of glue traps I'd recommend soaking them in just water with no soap first, just because a lot of them tend to start drinking the water because they're often hot/dehydrated/exhausted. I like to let them drink as much as they want before giving them a soapy bath just so they aren't ingesting any soap.

No, most people wouldn’t gaf if a rattlesnake died in their glue trap, sadly. The majority of people still hate snakes, especially venomous.
It's awful, but sometimes minds change when they are faced with an animal they think they hate, that they've always been told to hate, suffering right in front of them. Not everyone is willing or capable of course, but most people just haven't really had the chance to consider whether or not they truly dislike snakes, or have just been expected to.@@thetowndrunk988
@@RattlesnakeSolutions I love snakes. I wish everyone did. But take my wife, who grew up in the Philippines- her, and everyone else there, absolutely hate snakes, and I can’t change their minds. I’ve tried. I understand their fear- they’ve got some real danger noodles over there- king cobra, Philippine cobra (though not where my wife lives), and a few other nasties. But, bites are very rare, despite the fear. We need more people like you, especially in countries like there, to educate and remove the snakes, so they can continue living and not automatically be killed by fearful rice farmers.
@@RattlesnakeSolutions I was a snake hater before, all snakes I hated. I got into photography, and I live in the Mojave Desert. I was freaked out going out into the desert and my friend was a city boy who did not think about snakes. I thought since I was in their home(snakes) that I would learn about them. I did and I grew to love them but with respect. I remember the first Mojave rattler I encountered; I was so very excited. I came up to the Mojave and it was on an asphalt road in the Mojave Preserve late at night. It ball into a defensive position, rattled at me once and then it allowed me to take many photos of it and then I grabbed a stick and lightly touched it to make it travel off into the desert and get off the road. For years I was in the desert doing my photography and a lot of times it was late at night and into the morning hours. That Mojave was the only rattler I encountered but like I told my city boy best friend, that we were probably always very close to rattlers, but they kept quit allowing us to do our work and to leave them alone.

I love how you guys rescue the snakes stuck in traps! These traps are pretty inhumane..
I used to be terrified of snakes but y’all have seriously changed that. I took my daughter out to find animals and we found what must have been a 12-15” gopher snake. It was literally the coolest thing ever to see how much my daughter loved it and the snake was not acting defensive at all. It was definitely a core memory type of moment for my daughter she absolutely loves snakes now.

what is Dawn not good for?
I use small insect glue traps for scorpions INSIDE my house never outside. Usually catch crickets or the occasional scorpion if they make it past the pesticide barrier somehow. We use actual mousetraps for suspected rodent problems. Poor baby glad you helped it.

Good video. I was able to release a mouse caught the same way. The unfortunate thing is that you failed to explain that glue boards are not a primary source of pest elimination They are most often (and when correctly used) a part of IPM. That's where a Pest Control Professional performs an inspection of a property, notifies the client of all areas off access, food, water, and harborage for a targeted pest, and then utilizes glueboards, sticky traps, snap traps, or (only when appropriate ) Rodenticides. The success of these measures is on the clients compliance with the IPM recommendations to exclude targeted pests from the residence. I wish you well, and thanks for this video.
I happened upon a lizard caught in one of these traps in our garage. I've got some spray canola oil that got it out nice and quick. We did have a rattler as well years ago, got it out with soapy water, probably not the best thing to have used but it did the trick in that instance.

Poor little guy :( I'm so glad you were able to rescue him and clean him up. If nothing else hopefully the stress made him learn to stay in the desert where he belongs. Silly babies don't know they don't belong in glue traps or Walmart lol

We used glue traps back in the 80's for mice and rats. I thought back then when I used one inside my house for mice. One day when I got home from work I found a mouse in the trap. It was also stuck to my cats face and whiskers when he grabbed the mouse. I hate those traps! Now I hear about snake owners that use the traps to catch their pets that get out of their cage. These people suggest to others to use the traps to snake owners that can't find their pets. It's on FB and I explain to them how wrong it is.

I worked at a place where they hired a well-known pest control company and I have seen how cruel those traps are. Most mice and rats suffocate when they can't stand up any longer and tire and their face gets covered in the glue. A slow and agonizing death for the victims of these types of traps.

Wondering, when relocating a baby snake, do they need to stay in their range or can the young ones be relocated to a better and safer environment like a river bed with lots of rock shelter?

When I was an exterminator I caught a rattlesnake younger than this one in a glue trap at a hotel. Unfortunately, by the time I found it, the snake had expired. The glue trap was meant for rodents and scorpions.

They shouldn't be banned, people just need to be educated on their proper use. In side of the garages or homes they work great, outside they catch anything that will fit in them and that can be a problem.

I despise glue traps. Its so disgusting that your okay with making something suffer 😪. My mom got glue traps back in the day when they first came to market. I was young and I heard this noise coming from a cupboard. It was like a squeaking whine😢. I opened it up and I saw the most disturbing thing a animal loving child should never seen. It doesn't kill them its trying all means to get free and that means self-harm. Just please 🙏 don't get them. If you need or want to remove try a more non-harmful way. Bryan gets ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'s for his tender handling of this baby snake. I've even freed bugs from stickie-traps. I personally use mineral oil, as that's what the products label advised.

These traps are atrocious things. Why would anyone purposely want to kill mice or beautiful rattlesnakes like that? After all, if you don't want mice around evolution has kindly privided the rattlesnakes to deal with that.
I’m all for rodent control, but I once saw one badly suffering, slowly dying in a glue trap and it was awful. Nothing should have to die like that. Breaks my heart to see a snake in one.

@@RattlesnakeSolutions Where I live pretty much every person around here kills all rattlers on sight, and we still have tons of them with a lot of bites on livestock, pets, and our children every year. We do however allow all non-venomous to live, I will just say Rattlers breed at a high enough rate that they will likely never be endangered just because of how most of the time only about 3 per farm get killed per year, while there are an average of 10 born per female each year they can have upto 60 per birth. I understand people wanting animals to never be hurt as I agree no animal should be mistreated/tortured. But we have to many children bitten here to ignore them and leave them free to roam our properties.

You're not killing the snakes that live on your property, but those that are most experienced in avoiding you. An adult rattlesnake on a property is not a new situation, not a new danger, but a chance encounter where an animal that has successfully avoided you for years is discovered for the first time. It's feeling safe instead of being safe, and an in depth look at the ecology of the area and what is actually happening would force someone who is actually interested in the safety of the kids and pets to consider giving up the "common sense" approach that fails so many.
Aside from that, you just come in here to a page that's obviously about conservation and study of urban/wildlife conflict with a comment of "Just kill it." Let's be honest about your intentions here.
@@RattlesnakeSolutions I bred non venomous snakes for over 10 years, I am not in here for only 1 reason, my dog was bitten by a western diamond back just 3 weeks ago, the snakes are not safer you are insane if you honestly believe that, we understand rattlesnakes and for the most part let them be out in fields, we have tons of experts here and they will readily tell you kill any rattlesnake close to you home area of the property otherwise they will end up pushing out ypur other snakes. Also we have huge rattlesnake round ups where thousands of rattlesnakes are caught and used for demonstration, guys even lay in sleeping bags with hindreds of them you show how they can treat you as the environment, but then we also eat lots of rattlesnake at those events and then the majoritybof the snakes are realized for away from humans and pastures, but that one on that sticky pad, yes just kill it just like any on your property, or near your livestock, have you ever had cattle and do you understand the Vet cost to treat just 1 cow or calf from a bite and how anymore with the cattle market that alone can cause ranchers to lose their whole heard because suddenly they can not turn a profit off them if the vet bills are to high.
