    "With autumn closing in." Wow. That one line adds a whole dimension to this song, which is otherwise about carefree teenage horniness. But that line is a cold-water reminder that those times don't last forever.

    Bob was talking about more than just losing his virginity, the whole song is about that teenage experience (backroom, alleys, or trusty woods). and then about getting older and trying to recapture those feelings "with Autumn closing in"

      I was a high school senior in 79-80 and my boyfriend (later husband) and I did a lot of night movin'. And just like the song, now I can hear a song from that time and it takes me way back, before it all got so, so awful

    He writes such descriptive lyrics, poetic really. " I woke last night to the sound of thunder , how far off I sat and wondered. started humming a song from 1962 , ain't it funny how the night moves , when you don't seem you have as much to lose , strange how the night moves , with autumn closing in" .     As a 26 year old living in the Rocky Mountains of Canada, this song has got to be one of the best written masterpieces I've ever heard. I feel a ton of emotion listening to his voice and delivery of his pitches. Makes me want to start writing music tbh lol.. Incredibly beautiful song.

      Best part of the song - you think you’re listening to a song about coming of age, exploring your sexuality as a teenager - then, in that break - suddenly, the whole song isn’t just a reverie about youth - it’s a meditation on the entire life cycle.

    Losing his virginity, yes, but now looking back many years later, as autumn is closing in, he is remembering.
    I remember this song as a teenager, and now, as MY autumn is moving in, it is so sweet to remember the time when anything was possible and I was so excited about my future. I remember.

      Mr. Seger said in an interview with Bob Costas.. the song he was "hummin' from 1962" was actually a song that came out in 1963- The Ronettes- Be My Baby... Love knowing this!!

      @@lipby Nope. Seger wrote the song and it was later covered by Brooks and Dunn and also by the Highwaymen. Seger's was the original.

    Simply one of the greatest songs ever written. I am 56 years old and this reminds me of my early thru late teenage years. It reminds me of the summers and falls as I grew up. Makes me very melancholy.

      Totally agree. Just a spectacular song. No one tells a story like Bob. It's a shame "Like a Rock" was sold and run into the ground by Chevy. It's a masterpiece in being a teenager and early 20-womething.

    Grew up in Detroit where Bob was king. Was at the live bullet concert at Cobo Hall in September 1975, best concert ever.

      Saw him in Montréal in 1980. That was the tour during which Nine Tonight was recorded (Boston and Detroit). That was one of the best concerts I ever saw. But to see him at the Live Bullet concert at Cobo Hall? I tip my hat to you, sir. Legendary performance, best live album ever.

I love that it is so quiet talking about....thunder. I also love that the thunder is suggested to be as far off as "1962". The distance is almost palpable yet somehow reachable.

    I was very fortunate to see Brother Bob :) twice. Both in the Boston Garden. He loved Boston and recorded songs for one of his live album at the Garden (Boston not NYC). This is my favorite song. He didn't play it. I was crushed. Then he came out for a FIVE SONG ENCORE (!!!!!) and Night Moves was the fist encore song. Tears were shed. I have never cried at a concert before or after. He is SO fabulous!!

    I really love how Segar conveys the sense of middle age in the "woke last night to the sound of thunder," and "with autumn closing in," the way his voice is softer there. You just hear the years having gone by in those few notes.

    His voice sounds familiar because his hit song, Like A Rock, was used for years and years for Chevy truck commercials on TV. So people who don’t even know Bob Seger or his music probably know his voice for sure!

    I'm over 60yrs old. Bob Seger has been one of my favorite artists since I was in my early teens. It's so wonderful to see a young person discover how great Seger's music is. If only for a few minutes.. You made me feel 40+ years younger. THANK YOU Jamel !!

      When I was a student at U of M nearly 40 years ago, Bob came into a bar that had live bands and just sat a table by himself to enjoy the music. Then, I thought it was cool of him because I went there all the time and the music was good. Now, I would freak out because his songs are more meaningful to me than when I was in Ann Arbor.

      That's the thing. When you are young, you hear Bob singing his soul out and say: "Yeah, that's pretty good." When you get older though and have experienced some things in life, you listen to Bob and say: " I fell you, brother! I feel you."

    Listening to Bob now-a-days for me is like a punch in the stomach combined with getting a new puppy... bittersweet cuz I'm really starting to get older(Autumn closin' in), yet reminiscent of those teenage + years, carefree days and nights with nothing but the bright future ahead(Sweet Summertime)...     Minot AFB North Dakota heading in my dad's 1978 Dodge Monaco Brougham to the BX. He was driving I was front seat passenger. My dad actually said when Bob broke down to the speaking part , " Nice how he did that. " my Dad was not a rock-pop guy so it floored me he was even listening. A quiet military officer who let us control the station selection in the car. A good dad, indeed. Missing him since 1995. Does not seem possible a man so strong had one massive heart attack and was in the next realm.

    The song was written about him pursuing a relationship with an Italian girl who’s boyfriend was in the military while he was a teenager. The boyfriend returned & she Married him leaving bob with a broken heart. The song is about him as a teenager but remembering it as an adult.

    It's not so much about losing his virginity as it is the song of life. When you're young/ preteen that is your Spring. As you grow into your teens/ 20's that is the Summer of your life. As you enter midlife (50's) you enter the Autumn of your life. The time in your life when you realize you are closer to the end than the beginning. When your health starts failing and you are more aware of problems facing you. Waiting on the thunder. The Winter.

    This is back when artists were “artful” now a pop/rock/rap singer would just go straight X rated with the lyrics without any poetry
    Being a bit older now, I see and understand other aspects of the lyrics for example when he sings “with autumn closing in”. The song is a nostalgic celebration of the “summer” of life and all too soon we experience the “autumn” of our lives

    As for Bob's voice sounding familiar and that you might have heard some of his material before, the chances of this is pretty good if you've seen a commercials for Chevy Trucks and heard the song "Like A Rock" or watched the movie "Risky Business" and saw the scene of Tom Cruise dancing around the living in his tighty-whiteys to the song "Old Time Rock'n'Roll"

      @@Deborahtunes Jimmy Johnson (one of the original "swampers") had remodeled the studio back to its original Glory, and I saw him playing with a grandson of one of the other original swampers band members, and we started talking after his gig and he said that me and my son could come over and he would give us a tour of the place before he opened up to the public, he said that his house was next to the studio and we'd have a cup of coffee first,I was like a kid at Christmas, I've ran sound since high school and I picked his brain as much as I could that day, he turned producer/engineer after the swampers split up and the music he produced and engineered is played daily multiple times a day from multiple artists (Google his compilation)

In the 70s when I was a youngin, my peers didn't understand my taste in music,they called it white folks music, I called it soul music ! It may have taken you a while bro ,but better late than never ! Check out that one hit wonder that also hit the airwaves of the seventies, the group is the Stories, the song ,Louie ,Louie. And dude ....we didn't need a break down on what Bob's story was about !

      Saw him in San Diego on his farewell tour. His voice has actually mellowed & smoothed out quite a bit. Still nice, but no mistaking that old raw sound. One of the great songwriters of our time.
