  • Critics and audiences seem to love it, but of course the Nostalgia Critic has some problems. What could he possibly dislike about the 2016 live action remake of Jungle Book?

The Jungle Book is a 2016 American fantasy adventure film directed and produced by Jon Favreau, produced by Walt Disney Pictures, and written by Justin Marks. Based on Rudyard Kipling's eponymous collective works and inspired by Walt Disney's 1967 animated film of the same name.

"A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest." - C.S. Lewis
In other words, treat children's media like adults' because they have the same capacity to enjoy actually *good* media as adults. It in fact shapes their thoughts and ideas.
The kind of lazy writing that happened in the new Jungle Book only creates people like the Happy Madison fans. They want the same tropes over and over with a different skin, because they never learned any better.

Draukagrissah Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with being darker or more mature for kids. If anything, that’s treating them with more respect, because you’re being more honest about reality and not talking down to them. But of course, you have to know *how* to do that first. Otherwise...mistakes are made...

    • @linkonar7823

That literally doesn't make any sense. If a story is dedicated to CHILDREN and said children enjoy it then isn't it doing its job? Isn't it being competent in what it was set out to accomplish? In that sense, I'd think it would make that story a GOOD children's story.
Now a BETTER children's story would definitely have adults feeling satisfied on top of the children already happy with what they were given.

The quote specifically says "by ONLY children." It's insinuating that the best children's stories are more like what we call "all ages" stories, themes that can be relateable throughout your life.

I honestly just wanted to hear Christopher Walken sing "Ohh oobey doo, i wanna be like yououu."
To be honest, I suspect that Walken just took the role just so he could sing that song, the producers told him this was not a musical, but then he began to sing it and they didn't bother retaking so they just went with it.

He literally just does what he wants. And he wants to sing. He wants to lighten the mood a bit, show off, revel in the fact that FINALLY he’s getting what he deserves. Boom. Funny thing is, Kaa is actually one of Mowgli's best friends in the book. Bagheera and Baloo even recruit him specifically to save Mowgli from the monkeys. Mowgli also returns to the jungle after the men in the village reject him for being too weird (living in the jungle all your life will do that to you), and after they try to imprison his mother, he saves her and has the animals destroy the village. And Akila does die, but it's in an epic battle with a huge enemy wolf pack (he was old by then anyway).

    • @philipgood5041
      @philipgood5041 Рік тому +10

Yeah, Kaa is a BOSS in the book. I recently reread the second one, and whilst the animals still love and respect young adult Mowgli, there's an air of "he is both of man and of the jungle, greatest of both worlds, what is he?" Not for Kaa though! He's just like 'ah shit, it's my favourite biped, how you doing Mowgli, it's been a hot minute, say, did I ever tell you how I've been in the jungle long before you and will be here long after you're dead? Shit I'm high right now."

Kaa was going to have a bigger part, but she was dropped for some reason. Apparently, they were gonna have Baloo and Bagheera go to her for help, just like in the book...which makes me so mad because they could have done something GREAT by bringing back Kaa's heroic, mentor portrayal. Additionally, her scene with Mowgli was gonna be a smidge longer, as she would've rescued Mowgli from Shere Khan and THEN tried to eat him before battling with Baloo.
Also, fun fact: This isn't the first adaptation to make Kaa a lady snake! There was an audiobook version where Kaa was depicted as female and voiced by the late Eartha Kitt (and she did a _fabulous_ job, as always).

    • @mrroboshadow

theres also a comic book adaptation where there are i believe 4 kids instead of 1 (also mowgli is a girl for some reason[if i had to guess i'd say sex appeal on the covers but i digress]) with each one given to a different animal "tribe"
one went to the wolves of course
      one went to the tigers
      one went to the monkeys
and one went to.....small rodents which i want to say were squirrels but memory fails me at the moment

With a big name like Scarlett Johansson cast as Kaa, I was really hoping that Kaa would have a big role in this version. Specifically, I was hoping for Kaa to join forces with Bagheera and Baloo to rescue Mowgli from the monkeys, which is actually what happens in the original book. So, I felt rather let down when Kaa only appeared in one short scene to dump exposition on the viewer and then never did anything else after that.

Know what's really funny, btw? Kaa is female in this movie because the director said the story is too "male-oriented" and needs more noteworthy female characters.
He then proceeds to give the now-female Kaa less than two minutes of screentime.

Indeed, when IMDB still had forums, my suggestion was that if they wanted to combine the book and animated versions, have Kaa initially want to eat Mowgli, but then decide not to because it would only please the tiger she despises... and so she teaches Mowgli how to fight like a serpent in the trees... leading to him using that technique when the jungle is on fire, and so you get the same outcome with a much better character as a bonus.

Doug is mocking the supposed divide between "Kid" and "Adult" versions, pointing out how marketing something as mature and gritty doesn't mean that the animated version isn't more advanced, as he compares this version to the supposed children's movie and explains why the latter is superior and shouldn't be considered mere kids stuff.

I like how this version fixes problems with that one (for instance, it always bugged me how Mowgli's wolf family was just forgotten and never mentioned again in the original). Also, am I the only one who hated how Mowgli abandoned his friends for some chick he just met? I'm glad the live-action one removed that.

But, still, I think it's got a chance even with this changes. So far, these are my thoughts on the Disney live-action remakes/add-ons. Overall, my thoughts are mixed and I still try to be cautiously optimistic.
*Cinderella:* Liked it a little bit and had many of the same thoughts as in NC’s old vs. new episode.
*Maleficent:* Man, I thought it was horribly misguided. 100% agree with Doug on that.
*Alice In Wonderland live-action sequels:* Had not seen them yet and still need to see the original, so I cannot comment.
*Jungle Book:* For what each respective film was trying to be, I thought the original was better, but the remake still gave me a distinctly different experience and character arc for a Mowgli that I enjoyed. I probably would have liked the remake at least as much as the original, had they better utilized Kaa’s character and how she fits into the narrative (ex: Give her more screentime, have that benevolent mentor relationship with a Mowgli like in the book so it can make sense for her to be the exposition dump of Mowgli’s past, have Kaa help Mowgli against a few more monkeys as in the book, incorporate Scarlett Johansson’s “Trust In Me” so the film can feel more like an actual musical and keep Christopher Walken’s song from feeling a little out-of-place, and have Kaa meet Mowgli in the second half instead so he can angrily confront Shere Khan immediately afterwards).
*Pete’s Dragon:* Also cannot comment on it, since I have not seen the original in a really long time and have not yet seen the remake.
*Beauty and the Beast:* I honestly liked it. I definitely agree that it lacks the near perfection of the animated film and should NOT have been a high priority for Disney for any reason other than making money. While I do criticize the corporate mindset behind the project’s funding (and deliberately did not see it in the theaters until a few weeks have passed so as to not contribute too much to it), I still felt the actors, designers, composers, CGI artists, etc. did a nice job overall. It gave me a couple of things more/different from the original (regarding the story, character development, and songs), I loved the cast in it (especially Dan Stevens, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Luke Evans, and Ewan McGregor), “Be Our Guest” made me feel like a little kid again, I thought the portrayal of the castle and the furniture was a creative technical achievement that exceeded my expectations (although I can understand if people felt some of the furniture approached the uncanny valley a little bit), some of the different renditions of the songs/instrumentals were enjoyable for me, etc. So I am still glad I saw it, despite it not being as perfectly done or groundbreaking as the original.

It was a joke. He was referencing the wildebeest stampede from The Lion King, because the image is basically the same. It's even more egregious to recycle that idea from TLK because, in Kipling's original, there IS a Shere Khan, Mowgli and buffalo scene--in which Mowgli, who is a cowherd in the village now, RIDES the buffalo and leads them in a charge against the tiger, trampling him to death. To take the buffalo--something any reader of the book would remember--and use them instead to make a pointless reference to another Disney film, is arguably worse than including them at all.

It is truer to the source material, follows Mowgli from childhood to manhood and it is brutal as hell (Mowgli rips Shere Khan's mouth apart with his bare hands and skins him afterwards). I heard that it was released in the US on video in the late 90's, but was heavily altered, so find subtitle version instead.

It focuses on such complex matters as coming of age, facing death, fighting the fear of the unknown, discovering sexual desire, and learning how to make your own decisions and be responsible for them. I highly recommend this cartoon to everyone who appreciates Kipling's story, though the book was more about nature, in my opinion, and the Soviet cartoon is more about the man. “The grown up version”? But the entire point of the story (both versions) is that like it or not Mowgli has to grow up and leave the jungle. We all feel sad to see him say goodbye to Baloo and Bagira and everyone but we understand that it has to be this way. Ending it with him in the jungle would be like if in the Lion king remake, Simba just stayed with Timon and Pumba for the rest of his life. This “grown up” version completely spits in the face of the original’s moral.

Exactly. Shere Khan sees himself as a protector of the jungle and the natural order(and he is technically not wrong). He views the wolves almost as traitors for taking Mowgli in, eventually even killing the leader to "get them in line".

Yea, in a way Shere Khan kind of set up a self-fulfilling prophecy there; he said the bad thing was going to happen but in his attempts to prevent the bad thing, he inadvertently set events into motion to cause the bad thing to happen. Had Khan just left Mowgli alone, or at the very least let Mowgli leave and not killed the wolf leader, Mowgli wouldn't have been motivated to take the torch that accidentally started the wild fire.

Really?! Because I knew from the original story that Mowgli does grows up in the village and at one point he sings above the fire using the skin of dead Baloo as a rug.

With what you say, it's clear Doug made a major mistake when watching the film, though I've seen that of him now and then.
Is his mind just going? Isn't he paying attention anymore? Maybe he just didn't care enough to recall everything more clearly.

fendelphi Even the "killing the alpha wolf to put the rest of the pack in line" doesn't really work. Surely that would break some kind of jungle code, right? They weren't invading his territory, and he had no intention to eat him. "Break the code, and you die" is a sentiment that's explicitly stated at least once in the movie, so why wouldn't the rest of the pack retaliate right after the murder? Why wait until Mowgli comes back before fighting him?

This makes me wonder if he saw Mogli, it's actually pretty accurate to the book and it's pretty good

Truth is, being serious doesn't make it mature, or adult. That's how kids, and immature people, see maturity. Imo, maturity is about respect, and knowing when it's time to be serious, and when you can be silly.
