- Hoagy Carmichael's great tune makes an ideal vehicle for jazz improvisation, as do all his wonderful compositions, Stardust, Skylark, etc. I imagine he died a happy man, having composed these perfect melodies. I'm playing my shiny Yamaha Custom Alto YAS 875, serial 003060, a very efficient and responsive playing machine, with a Rico Plasticover 2 and 1/2 reed in a metal Otto Link Tone Master USA mouthpiece. Shirt by Timberland, tee-shirt by Cotton Traders.

Hi Ad4MZ, Thanks for your kind comment. On this track I'm using an Otto Link Super Tone Master No. 8 with a Rico Plasticover No. 3 reed. The alto is a Yamaha Custom YAS 875. I love the Otto Link, but I also use a Yanagisawa metal mouthpiece on my tenor.

@agigcbo I started on alto and played it for about 20 years. But I loved the sound of the tenor and got a 1914 Conn Pan American tenor (very good!), and kept the alto. I've still got the alto and play it from time to time, but I soon found the tenor suited me better. I advise you to keep the alto and try the tenor too if you can. I love my old French Selmer SBA tenor, but there are many other good makes. Yamaha is good. But try before you buy if you can. Get one home for a weekend. ...Good luck.
Ian..just curious which you prefer - alto or tenor? I'm considering trading my Yamaha YAS-82Z in for a tenor and would like your input on whether or not I should consider something other than a Yamaha for tenor. Thanks!
