I mean this as a compliment Ian If I close my
eyes I could be listening to any of the greats
I have loved over the years. Just bought a tenor for
xmas and wasnt to sure about it at first (having
played drums for 64 years) wont give up now I
cant listen to you for inspiration !

    • @michaelmcdermott7349
      @michaelmcdermott7349 10 років тому

What, no more drums or just decided to expand your musical experience? Be sure to listen to Aubra Graves, then you will want to play Sax. As a working person I always pushed music back because I enjoyed it so much. My wife bought me a King Super 20 back in about 1979 and this year I found a 1928 Conn Alto, you and I seem to be following the same voice in music :) Last year my Ear doc put in a TORP and I got my balance back as well as my hearing, so for as long as it works I'm playing in my closet :)

      1. listen to this kind of music a lot.
      2. memorize and arpeggiate the chords, so you get to know, what are the important notes at the time.
      3. listen to a backing track and SING whatever melody comes to your mind. Try to make some small melodic motives, that makes sense.
But really it all comes to get familiar with the genre.
Listen to players that aren´t playing thousands of notes a second. I love Scott Hamilton in sax, a very tasteful guy, you can listen to him a lot and pick up resources he uses, a few phrases he repeats a lot.
Maybe if you are into this older style listen to Louis Armstrong.

Ian, astonishing playing as always! I'm 24 from Manchester, complete green as grass novice, I haven't even bought a Tenor yet hoping to buy one when I get my house sorted.
I've been a Bassist since a kid, I was going to find a teacher straight away, is there any books for the sax you'd recommend? Plus that McGill Sax School seems brilliant.
I have a real book for Bass Clef, but I'm sure it's going to be a while before I'm jamming standards and playing the blues. 😂
    Keep on uploading!
    Thank you again! 😊

I'm a Sophomore in high school and I play clarinet, piano, tenor sax, and xylophone. I am pleased to say that I am in my school's concert band and jazz band, and we had to play a section of this to audition for jazz band. I really enjoy this tune and I think I could probably listen to you play your sax all day! Such great rich sound you create, and the emotion and movement you put into it makes it even better. I know this probably doesn't mean much coming from a high school student, but I think you are a wonderful saxophonist :)
