- This week, Marques, Andrew, and David had a lot to talk about. First, they get into the Samsung controversy about using "Space Zoom" to take photos of the moon. After that, they go into all the new Pixel leaks that popped up this week. We have some specs about the Pixel 8, some renders of the Pixel Fold, and straight up photos of the upcoming Pixel 7a (which hasn't even been announced yet). Then everyone gets existential talking about AI before we wrap it all up with some trivia.

I don't think I can ever go back to the audio only version of this podcast. The video version is just so good with being able to see everyone's reactions and the context. it's definitely one of my favorites. I feel like I can listen to these guys talk about just about anything.
Same, I tried watching both youtube videos and listen on spotify but I can only do the former now.
@@carlbelmonte 😊😊😊
You mean like that dork on the left picking his nose? 😂😂😂😂
@m24086 who?
I almost always watch podcasts now on UA-cam, even if they are audio only. UA-cam is really the only way I consume video media anymore. I'll still listen to the radio, but aside from that 100% of my content consumption is UA-cam.
No TV, no Netflix, no TikTok, UA-cam videos are just best
Honestly the Waveform Podcast is really growing on me. Very fun to watch and listen to!
Same!
I watch the video format , Facial expresion are priceless
Yes. Soothing.
Mostly because of Andrew's voice. Yes. :P
same!!!
David just managed to describe PR at its atomic level: "Use big words to say very little"
I agree with Marquees, I don’t want to have the golden hour vibe applied to everything😭I want realism. I want what my eyes are seeing. That’s my favorite part of photography, capturing a moment how I’m seeing it!:-(
It’s disappointing feeling like I want to use my smartphones camera less and less because of this. Also I agree that most people don’t genuinely want to use that beauty filter on TikTok lol it’s mainly used as a joke from what I seen :|
At least for photos and video recorded in camera app, use RAW then
Get a Xperia
Use RAW and turn off any AI optimizing software
@@oladrolahola interesting.

I like how everyone of them has their special input about the topic
Wait a minute. David has a Framework laptop! Marques when are you and the rest of the team going to review that machine?
@Carl Gunderson cry
Another great episode but you guys are cracking me up with the life changing reactions to the Yellow iPhone last week and another round of "surprising" google rumors! 😂
Love this podcast and everything MKHBD! Pinpoint reviews and most important, they are objective criticisms!!! Keep it up! The ski is the limit.
A note on the Hueawei watch buds. When you said people might not notice there's headphones inside the watch, my dad got a samsung galaxy note 3 and he didn't know there was a pen until about 1 year after when I asked to try out drawing on it. Blew his mind. I think you're right but then again just depends on experience with technology.
I listen each week. Got to say love when it is all 3 of you, but David will always be #1.
Starting to enjoy this podcasts form more and more. Banger episode
AI in Google Workspace was the coolest news this week.
and then 365 copilot coming
365 copilot was better 😌
Yesterday Microsoft announced Copilot. An AI for Microsoft 365 base on OpenAI (I guess GTP4). The competition between the two products will be interesting. Hopefully the technology will also reach personal (non-business) accounts soon.
you meant to say microsoft copilot
microsoft 365 copilot was mindblowing if it works as the recorded demos....
I believe the 'moon' situation for samsung is being treated like a 'gate', not really surprised but I personally don't mind it at all!
I thought it was just me, from the moment this 'feature' came out, I was skeptical about it but I know at some point, phone camera technology will advance far enough where it would be able to do such photography.
Well it depends on what they are claiming.
Are they claiming that the Zoom is leagues ahead of the competition due to how well it takes pictures of the moon?
Or are they stating that it can take nice pictures of the moon?
The first case is deceptive as F, the second one is meh because how many times do you need to take a picture of the moon if you have done it once?
It was obvious especially once you noticed that other photos taken at 100% zoom didn't look as good. I don't know why people are surprised. At least they aren't doing an overlay and actually put an effort
Ellis changed option B for the second question from Roller Scroller to Roller Reader and no one noticed. Nice work
Andrew was so excited about the Smart Fridge! lol. Loved it!
Just wanted to say, I'm 90% positive that the watch buds can be paired with any android or apple phone using the huawei health app.
Also I use a huawei watch GT2 pro and I can indeed confirm that it has 14 days of battery life, sometimes I even forget to charge it because it lasts so long
I also confirm this, huawei watches are really impressive but I can see how this watch bud is not the best thing that they've done
I think something like "scene optimizer" should be something that you could turn on or off easily like HDR. Also, all phones should have a camera manual mode.
To be certain, is there any leaks about when is the 7a gonna launch? Cuz I really need that 90Hz screen, and then it'll be a perfect phone for me
Adam's example about photography is really great, I'm for sure going to use it when people ask me if I'm worried a about AI taking over my programming job
Agree with the fundamental skills discussion at 52:00 onwards when it comes to tech. I already feel like this is becoming a thing when it comes to basic computer, phone and tech use when working with the younger generation in their early 20s at my place of work/office. Often it is expected by them that the laptop or phone just works and as soon as there is a minor issue, they come straight to me without even trying to figure out what the issue is or even doing a quick search online on how to fix it. For the most part, a simple restart of the device or an update fixes these issues. Even had a discussion with a person the other day who uses tech a lot, but they had no idea about things like drivers, firmware and etc. Obviously tech users are similar to car users, you are not expected to know inside out how the product works and have the ability to take things apart and fix them, but basic understanding is always very useful in life, especially when we use these devices daily. Feels like knowing how to use a piece of tech very well, but having no idea how it works even at the very top (basic) level is becoming a more frequent observation as tech becomes more user friendly each year.
David wiping his nose with the back of his hand down the entirety of his face is hilarious 😂
For the Hz thingy...120Hz definitely feels smoother by a lot but I deliberately keep my phone at 60Hz because I am not glued to my phones like others. I'd rather be able to forget to charge a night and still have battery the next day than having a slightly smoother scrolling experience through websites.
Love the podcast. Great job guys.
Just a comment regarding the moon pictures. I don't believe they look the same everywhere on the planet. Looking at the moon from the Southern hemisphere, it is "upside-down" when compared to looking at it from the Northern hemisphere.
so at 25:27 Marques mentions that this is a new design upcoming for the pixel 7a, however i have a pixel 6a with the same design in the back, i checked the hardware version and it says DVT1.1 which stands for design validation test (which is not supposed to be in my hands), i bought it used so i guess i have a unique pixel 6a now so thats pretty cool
The trivia section was much more enjoyable with the "long" time answers, because you could watch the strugle on their faces deciding, and now they are just rushing trying to write the answer. You got rid of the caothic part of that section, and it was fun.
This is where the comparison between phone photography and camera photography becomes crazy. Even though I appreciate that phone photography is becoming more "foolproof," as a photographer I like to see the results of what I photograph with my camera. If I want to post-process later at least I can decide if and how I want to alter it.
You can tell Ellis has the time of his life making + reading the trivia questions
So inspired by the Waveform team Podcast. They motivated me to start my Podcast, which I’m currently working on.
I wonder when AI would be good enough to capture meetings done in two languages switching. Like using your primary language and then in the same conversation switch to english, and then switching back and forth.
Cool! Thanks for sharing it. ✌️
This is the most interesting podcast about technology, very fun and soo cool
Anyone else feel like MKBHD website should have like a smartphone suggestion system based on the users inputs of required battery, ram, storage, etc.
I know there are sites for it but it would be way better if MKBHD had it with his own take on each phone under each phones spec sheet.
On AI, and how great the timing is, as a teacher when ai is inaccurate has been great for teaching because you can use to create materials you want the students to critique and at the same time encourage them not to use it badly because they realize its limitations as they are critiquing it, "are you smarter than an ai?" have been the lessons the students have bought the most into recently.
And to David's concerns about ai, it may be a calculator that has made us bad at math (despite the engineers that still got good at math like Adam said), but its also the printing press/democratization tool. The printing press didn't stop people from writing, it helped more people read. Analogy stolen from Twitter or a podcast, can't remember which
And last thing, then I'll stop talking to myself, since noone is excited that much about the pixel fold hardware.. pixel fold a is the way to go, slim camera visor with the 12mps and great software = best cameras in a foldable yet, but still slim (also the visor should go all the way across the back, not just be a floating shelf thingy like in the renders) and then cut corners to drop the price near or hopefully past the infinix fold
The zoom at 35:45 was gold🤣
I just have to say… I love the different personalities and perspectives that Marques, Andrew, and David bring to this show. And within that, most of the time, it cultivates some healthy controversy/disagreements between the 3. (Although at times I do feel like Andrew is out to get David. 😂🤷♂️)
the photography comment killed my soul when the guy in with the white lap top said what he said.... understanding the science of colour, visual psychology, composition, barrel distortions are so necessary for a professional photo
I love how all 3 of you are wearing headphones with a cord!
10x optical + flat screen on P8Pro would be nice
DAMN...I LOVE YOUR WORK.
52:18 Because of the Halting Problem, it's impossible for computers to generate arbitrary code that will work with a guarantee. Since computers can't tell if arbitrary generated programs will end, they also can't tell if it outputs the desired result after ending. It can only tell that it works by executing and testing the program which is depending on the program not a trivial thing. So AI will help writing code faster and can generate basic stuff but it will never be able to fully replace a software engineer. And also to explain specific logic correctly to AI is in a lot of cases probably way more complicated than just writing the code.
Such a great podcast. When I don’t know what I watch while working. Pop this on and relax. It’s relaxing, informative and never boring, glad everyone has mics now
The most photographed thing is that dude from the SlowMo Guys. He’s photographed trillions of times now.
I was already tired of filters on faces... People hate getting catfished, yet here we are embracing the tools that help do it.
Because people love catfishing
3 years ago I purchased a watch with earbuds built-in called AI power. They're on their third generation now. I think they're pretty good. Very simple watch interface though
How can you not understand what it’s like to want to capture the beauty when something stable looks special. Yes the moon is the same, but perspectives change, and what a photographer hopes is to capture the moment and emotions through each subtle variation in the experience
Everybody saying Derek 16:44 threw me off IRL 😂
This AI thing to write emails would work very well for people like me. I'm Mexican, whose first lenguage is Spanish and I live and work in Canada. Everytime I have to send a very formal email to certain people I spend so much time digging into my brain for new/better words to make it look more professional. And you could say "maybe yiu need to improve you English" but the problem is that I know the words (because I understand them perfectly when I hear/read them but when I'm typing an email I just don't remember them right away.
What Marques doesn't understand is that most people use social media to escape from their everyday reality. They don't want accuracy and reality in their social media world, they want to escape it. Andrew and David totally get the point.
Social media should not be an escape. It’s poison and garbage. Your mental health is suffering.
That would be gaming as well... it's not that simple though, otherwise you won't have the other half of social media complaining about the fakes...
I use social media for socializing, not escaping 😂
@@gagnarork Be better Hindu?
WTH dude?
Using social media for escapism is like drinking alcohol for hydration
I'm using s20 with a good Zoom, I don't have any pictures of the moon in my phone, but I love the Zoom pictures, especially from soccer games when the player is taking a penalty .
On David's point of uploading brain memory to a hard drive, that's real. I used to remember 20 to 30 phone numbers, and now only store 3 in my memory
I use the use a car vs explain how it works analogy often, but with AI, i prefer the analogy of driving a car versus explaining every miniscule detail of what driving is. Including the little nuiansances, pedal pressure slight steering changes, anticipation of traffic changes, potholes to avoid or absorb.....on and on.
love this podcast
Even the difference between the pro and non pro models of I-phones is high refresh rate, bigger battery, bigger screen and telephoto camera.
Last year with addition of iPhone 14 plus and the gen old processor they just removed bigger screen and added better processor.
The phone should give you 2 options on selfies. One bad one that's accurate as hell, and a second enhanced pic that is makes you look movie star perfect.
scrollio was a great name, I think Twillio was started around then, so this would fit that kind of naming scheme
A podcast that I could keep coming back to.
Watching this from my pixel 3a👌🏻 I still love it and works like new. Looking forward to upgrade this year just because I want more than one camera
Such a cool episode, the debate about AI tools was interesting cause so many different viewpoints were touched upon. Will definitely do some research in that area, a lot of fun!
41:17 See I agree with David. It takes the pressure off of coming up with words for an email or job posting. Not to mention that it’s MUCH easier to proof-read something wasn’t written by you. (It’s too easy to miss errors that you wrote even after you’ve proof read it 3 or 4 times.
But when you read someone else’s work it’s easier to be more judgmental as well as make into what you want it to be and having AI create the body of written work for you gives you that starting point.
I’m not saying this is the best thing ever - nor am I saying that some people won’t actually proof read, cause I also agree with Andrew, some people will just be lazy about it and that’s on them.
But I do like the idea of having that capability.
I agree and disagree with the point about essays. I can see Marques' point, but also essays are a demonstration of your ability to research, compile said research, form a coherent thesis statement, make coherent arguments to support your arguments backed up by the research you've compiled. So while AI may eventually get to a point where it can pump out a perfectly fine research paper, the person in my opinion should still get flunked because they have not demonstrated any of the underlying skills a research paper is meant to demonstrate outside of just answering a prompt.
Some saying since pixel 8 pro renders don't have telephoto camera there might be a pixel 8 pro max with curved display and telephoto camera
I love how both very unlikely predictions came true.
Camera Sensor or Editing error again (Verticle line all the way) you can see at 4:36 near Adam's left eye.
Reminds me of a video call in The Jetsons the mom had with another older woman. They both held up pretty pictures of their faces on a stick over their faces.
I understand David’s concern with the generative AI, but even though we have calculators we are still made to learn math in school, so it probably should never get that bad.
So... my 7 Pro has been a PITA to setup with Esim... and hearing more about those issues, and now I really want the flat screen back... almost tempted to wait for an 8 and return this odd thing. Or just get a 7. I got the 7 Pro because of the camera and few other improvements seemed reasonably priced.
I get so excited when I see a notification for this podcast . Genuinely love you guys . Coolest tech podcast around
This might be the edibles talking but you got me thinking bout how our own eyes probably edit reality. I don't think any of us see the same things in exactly the same way and our minds fill in a LOT of detail. So, I guess the phones are just mimicking what we do! 🤯
sometimes here, in the summer, you can see either venus or mars i’m not sure which it is.. but i wonder if Samsung’s AI enhancement engine can enhance photos of other planets, comets/meteors, stars..
The new Huawei watch ultimate, I believe, is going to feature satellite communication or so I saw on their advertisement.
If it's worth a video (maybe a short), could you guys explain why each one has different microphones? Thanks!
I haven't heard anyone talking about the zooming into text. I have the s23 ultra and when you zoom in to text the way it sharpens it to make it ledgible is crazy you can take a bury pic of the back of a truck super far down the highway and when it takes the pic the bumper stickers are clear
First and foremost, I really liked that episode. However, sometimes your exposure to all the new smartphones grows a bit on you ;-). I am still daily using the Pixel 4a(5G) and it is still a wonderful phone which did not give me,as an otherwise tech savvy person, the feeling that I need to upgrade. So hearing you talk about it as a painting from the 1800s felt a bit strange. (Upgrading to any recent Google Pixel would feel strange to me because of the lack of fingerprint reader on the back anyways)
I agree with Marques about writing a good prompt thing!
Andrew reflects my use case on wireless charging
I forget who but one of the UA-camrs took a picture of the moon, lowered the quality, added a face to it, and had the Samsung take picture of it. It kept the face. So it was pretty neat really
I was just about to say David has watched Black mirror or The Twilight zone and he then mentions it 😂. It definitely is something that deserves oversight and guidelines.
I have no business being here as I am definitely not the demographic for this pod but I dunno I'm really enjoying listening to you guys each week! I even bought a pixel thanks to your influence and so far so good! Loving the camera and upgrading from my S9 haha
You’re welcome here no matter who you are :)
Are you having any issues with your pixel? I’m still between the s23+ and the pixel 7 pro

and i found an old engadget article on the Polymer rollable ereader by Paul Miller, formerly of the verge/vergecast! awesome. yup it existed. apparently Polymer was a spin off of Phillips
If you're in the US, the main alternative to the 6a/7a is the Samsung A53 (last year) and the yet released (in the US but released elsewhere), the A54 but the 6a was generally recommended over the A53 last year and with the changes coming to the 7a (90Hz display, 8GB of RAM, Tensor G2, wireless charging), it is an even better proposition especially if it keeps the $449 price or better yet, goes down to $399.
Last year's A53 only had the 120Hz display going for it and that's about it. Camera wasn't as good, neither was the CPU which was a mid-grade Exynos, not up there with the Exynos powered the G1 of the 6a.
A52s was better than A53 so definitely one should buy pixel
@@Azx12345 the a52s isn't in stock in most countries now. Definitely won't be available anywhere after the a54 comes out

I've used Samsung's A series phones, and Pixels. I'm typing this on a 7pro. The idea that they compete at all with Pixel phones is laughable. A series is a mid-range device set, with mid range hardware and HORRIBLE software that weighs down the OS. Even the Pixel 7, I'd call mid-range device punching in the high -end weight class. The software is so much better it's not even fair. You guys ever go into a store and physically examine the S23 Ultra vs. a 7Pro? The S23 HICCUPS in daily usage. Just swiping screens, it's noticeable. I don't really think the Pixel has a direct competitor besides iPhone. There's just nothing close enough to it in the Android market.
@@Tauriel.909 definitely pixel has better software because obviously they are very minimal in their approach while samsung has one ui skin which is a bit heavy for the software so it's obvious but still they managed to do well with that and also pixel has less customisation features coz of their minimal approach but I like that feel more than samsung though I m using samsung at this point
uhh 4:30 whats the line when it swaps to the bois in the back there, over adams face right side?
i took a picture of the moon with the super telescopic lens in pro mode (max 10x) and to get a similar picture i had to reduce the ISO and it is pretty similar, but its clearly sharpening the image using ai or something in default mode
This brings us one step closer to a terminator calling your parents to see if they're still alive and the GPT engine in the terminator knows based on their reaction in a phone call that they're already dead.
Would the Huawei watch work better if the commit to the convinient concept and have only one bud in the watch? Would allow bigger watch batteries and somewhat better headphone quality for the same price.
The Samsung moon thing is the issue with how they presented and worded it. They were deliberately trying to mislead people into thinking their phone had the technical capabilities to capture the moon in HD, not that they’re artificially recreating an image of the moon, and not necessarily even accurately of what they’d actually see if they looked through a telescope (some craters etc don’t add up).
Every week I come here to learn that more and more of reality is crumbling before my very eyes.
I wish they started making phones with different target audiences like one focused on gaming and one focused on camera. I have never used my phone to play games but i really want the good camera and love the telephoto option but i have to pay for the gaming hardware. I have a pixel 7 pro and i love it but i would have liked if they had 2 telephoto lenses like some brands do. adding a x10 would be huge in my opinion.
56:24 The introduction of AI to education is just a similar leap to what the introduction of the internet was. Presumably, people were upset that people didn’t need to go to the library, and review books, when they had Wikipedia instead. ChatGPT (and co) is just an evolution of that.
Speaking of Google, are you guys aware that the Nest WiFi Pro speed throttling problem has still not been resolved despite Google's "fix" release in November?
I can't wait for next podcast. My fav podcast

Great talk
That Pixel 4a was a monster. The only thing I hated was that it was so small.
I think the question is weather it overlays a transparent mask of the moon, but if it is comparing the noise its seeing and comparing that to the known data of the moon to eliminate the noise, that seems fine.
As they mentioned and recreated, the redditor took a blurry image of the moon and the phone cleaned the blurry image to make a clear image of the moon: The original image never had said detail. That pretty much stamps it as a masking
The point of integration generative Ai models in your work flow would be the same transaction of using internet instead of a library to do your research.. its just the feedback loop which gets more efficient.

I had always though smart fridges were the dumbest thing on the planet. Then they mention ChatGPT telling you what you could make with what you have in your fridge. I'm sold, take my money.
Are there any Pixel Watch 2.0 leaks?
The only thing I hate about no longer using an iPhone is I had to sell my Apple Watch Ultra. But the Pixel Watch is so tiny (I can't go back) I settled for a Garmin Venu 2 Plus.
The sun is the most photographed. In most day pictures, the sun might be visible, sunrise, sunsets, etc. has to be, besides some location like the pyramids or wall of China, something like that. All and all, I’d bet on the sun bec so many people take sunrise/setting pictures
