I heard this song for the first time on Scorpions: Tokyo Tapes, back in 1980. Was already into Lovedrive and Animal Magnetism, but this song made me go back & buy everything prior. In 1982 I got an import of Lonesome Crow, yellow vinyl. Ffwd 23 years, I brought it to an outdoor backstage party (poorly lit) at a Scorps concert and got Klaus to autograph it. I said, "Do you recognize this album cover?" He looked at me and smiled and winked and said, "Ya, even in ze dark!"

Yes the old Scorpion albums with Ulrich Roth are a very special part of Heavy Metal history. "In Trance" has always been my fav album from the band with the track "Evening Wind". I'll probably get bashed for saying this but the only thing that kinda takes away from this reunion event is having all three guitarist for the Roth era songs. Nothing against Matthias Jabs it just loses some of the old feel about it all.

Michael is a lead guitarist by trade but he is also a very tight rhythm guitarist. You know that. Listen to Out in the Streets by UFO, on the Strangers in the Night live album. Michael handles both lead & rhythm perfectly well
Uli is just fucking great! But I also think that Mathias Jabs is one of the best in the business ;) And hey, let´s all hail Klaus for still been able to pull off those vocals -he sounds just as amazing as he did 35 years ago! :o

Uli Jon Roth, or Ulrich Roth as he was known back in the day, looks almost exactly the same in 2006 as he did 30 years earlier in 1976. It's trippy, and yet, oddly enough? It works. Even with all the hippy-dippy turquoise and sterling silver jewelry and his custom-designed guitar, it still works. I don't think just anyone could have made it work, but somehow Uli Jon still does. And Klaus Meine's vocals here are still fantastic. 30 years on and he still hadn't lost any of his high notes. I admittedly miss Francis Bucholz on bass and Herman Rarebell pounding the drums, but these young anonymous new kids seem to do just fine, whoever they are. Matthias Jabs still rocks out hard (and really works that bandanna on his head look perfectly), but graciously lets Uli Jon work his spacey magic, and Rudy Schenker still looks great with those badass blonde spikes and the wrap-around sunglasses. Scorpions still tearing it up live. Love Klaus's hat. Very cool. It's good he found himself a tambourine to rock out with. Was afraid he was going to start flinging his arms around again. Was watching one of the older videos from the 70s and Klaus was dancing mostly fine until he started flailing his arms and I was like "dude, just grab the mic stand and rock with that. Don't do the whole spastic windmills with the arms anymore. It's scary."
James Kottak is good. He's a bit younger & flashier & puts on quite the show. Herman needed to step out with his own band. I guess Francis officially retired. They made a classic backline, agreed. But, Herman found James & chose him to be his replacement with the Scorpions. From the research I did, the band asked Herman to name his own replacement since he left them & they didn't want to audition hundreds of drummers to take his place. Herman chose James because he felt James was like a younger version of himself.
Okay, that's interesting. Not an especially huge surprise. He and Michael Schenker go way back to the early days of The Scorpions back in the 70s, before UFO absconded with Michael for all those classic 70s UFO albums. Then Michael disappeared while UFO were on tour and eventually left the band permanently. He rejoined the Scorpions for a minute, or maybe just showed up long enough to throw a couple solos on a couple Scorpions albums then left to do Michael Schenker Group. So Michael and Herman have met. I'm a little sad that the original version of the group that recorded the very first MSG album, including the great vocalist Gary Barden and the always amazing Simon Phillips on drums, didn't stick together after they reunited for those anniversary concerts playing the entire first MSG album live. That I would have loved to see. It's available on DVD and definitely high on my wish list. Was not really a fan of the Mc Cauley Schenker Group, however. I found Robin McCauley's voice irritating, mostly because it always seemed to me like he was trying too hard to channel Dee Snider of Twisted Sister and there's really only one Dee Snider. (Who I like as a vocalist; just bugged me that Robin sounded like he was trying to emulate or imitate Dee; kinda Dee Snider-lite, basically.) The other problem with that era MSG was that they sounded like any ordinary boring faceless generic rock band trying super hard to get a single on Top 40 radio. :-p That era MSG, Michael's guitar playing and songwriting were just so bland and forgettable. What a waste of time that was. No firework displays of fleet fingered virtuosity like the early days with Gary Barden. That being said, I'm glad Michael and Herman are teaming up again. Wish Michael would stop bringing in other random faceless nobodies to do the old songs, though. It's disappointing, because they're rarely as good as the original players. Then again, Michael probably gets away with paying them pennies. Whatever works. I don't blame him for wanting to make money but at the expense of the music? Really Michael? Shame, actually. It was cool seeing him resurface with Scorpions on a few live tracks that wound up on UA-cam. But I suspected MSG would never remain on hiatus too long. The fact that Michael and his big brother Rudy Schenker don't get along well is always an indicator that MSG will never be too far away, in one form or another.
