  • Jonny and Jon assess a BMW M6 brought in as a parts project and are not shocked at what they find when they crack open the S85 V10 engine.
The guys also replace the destroyed engine of a Mercedes GL450.

My family exclusively buy Toyotas or Honda only.
My dad's Honda accord engine died with 430,000 miles. With the current car market, he just just bought a factory refurbished engine and had the transmission rebuilt.
5,500$ for the transmission and engine and 1,300$ for the labor and little stuff that was not worth going back on the engine.
Crazy market when it's cheaper to dump a bunch of money into your already payed for car then it is to buy new.

@@ozarkliving7263 i‘ve been there, having owned a bunch of Japanese and European cars. The Toyotas (Toyota and Lexus) are more reliable but they are far behind in handling, performance, steering, and style compared to the Europeans or even, some of the newer American cars, for that matter. These people with the high maintenance costs aren’t stupid…they have just made the decision that the reliability of a Toyota is not more important than driving enjoyment.

We had to move to a different state so it all went to a Porsche specialist. Ziplocks all labeled with all the bolts, engine, trans, timing kit, oil cooler upgrade. Several crates of stuff. I was cleaning out my old garage and found a bolt of steering. I pulled it out of my pocket and Tom said, "oh the bolt for the steering." I found the right guy for the job.

I wholeheartedly agree with Jonny's assessment of the S85 V10 - one of the worst engines BMW ever built. Yet there are still some of you fantasizing about putting this boat anchor into an E30. Those people are either into pain or into spending lots of money. Either way, no wonder BMW doesn't offer this engine anymore. BMW has already found better ways of reaching 500 or more horsepower years ago. Might be a worthwhile hint to look into. Thanks for the great video Jonny

S85 v10 is not one of the worst engine Bmw ever built. It’s really sad how misinformed people are about this engine. Did you know Bmw doesn’t offer v10 because of emission regulations? Bmw was actually looking to put v10 in the next generation M5 but killed the project because of the new euro emission requirements.

I have seen fair shares of Bmw at junkyard and I opened the engine valve cover. Believe it or not most of them has engine sludge as if the previous owner doesn’t keep up with maintenance. They all fail!! Just a matter of time... Root cause is high turbo temperatures and it burns the exhaut valves on the front cylinders on each bank. Another issue is failing cam lobes. And the cylinder wall scoring comes from failed siltec cylinder wall coating that's used to reduce friction and heat. Later years use a nanoslide branded coating.

Jonny, I know you love your beamers, but why are their engines so ^&%*! You love 'em because you get the best of both worlds. That is, you can easily and relatively cheaply fix your beamers - kudos! And yet you make so much money from clients fixing a brand that is so friggin' unreliable. After all of these years, of proud BMW history hasn't this company learned anything from say, Lexus? It's where luxury and reliability meet. BMW has never made this nexus - to a Lexus.

Lexus is boring, no offense. Bmw is a sport cars company and is worth the trade-off.

I’ll bet the customer has no intention of keeping this BMW. He is going to get Jonny to get it back running half decent, then he is going to flip it to try and recover most of the money that he has got into it.

Then people say "bmw's and mercedes can go 400k miles!". Yes, when u do shit like this to them. If it was a toyota, it would be dumped because the car would be worth less than the new engine. The car's own value sort of protects it from being totaled in these type of cases. Better question would be: how much money has been spent on the car during 10 years/certain miles.

I like Johnny and I think he is a true mechanic but still something seems fishy about that engine in the GL, why did that happen?? I think people should focus more on why crazy shit like that happens rather than just seeing the problem.. It must have overheated to cause that....

i got a 2014 gl450 with the same m278 motor. had it since new. 56k miles now. got the ecu tuned (turned up boost pressure and pulled some timing). made 560hp and 650lb/ft on 93. no other mods. $400 for the tune. put 10k miles of hard driving with the tune. no issues. stock hp was around 340. the car is a beast. 0-60 in the low 4 sec range. took off the stock speed limiter and got it up to 164mph (on the digital readout since the analogue tops out at 160) when driving from atlanta to tucson. these things sell for around $20k now and are amazing cars overall when maintained. cant beat the value for money.

The only thing good about a BMW is the looks why can’t you take the motor and tranny to the junkyard where it belongs and put a good engine 3.8 v6 from the 90s something like that in it I understand you’ll have to probably switch out the computer as well the alarm system might not match up I understand all that still once the project is complete you would have a good car not something that’s gonna stay at the shop

It's a little odd for someone with the knowledge of Johnny to signle out the S85 as "one of the worst BMW engines" when he knows full well that the rod bearing issues are also common on the S54, S65, S62 and S63. The S63 has a lot more than just bearings to think about too, also timing chains, valve stem seals and turbo related issues, I would say it or the N63 would easily take the title of worst engine from BMW. People like to single out the S85 because it's the only V10 BMW made which they think somehow makes it different, when in actual fact the issues it experiences aren't by any means unique to that engine. In terms of sound and the visceral and dramatic driving experience it provides, I would say the S85 is hands down one of the greatest engines BMW has ever produced. Keep in mind, it is the most powerful NA engine BMW ever put in one of their own road cars, the only one with more power is the V12 they made for the McLaren F1.

"One of the worst engines BMW ever made". The S85 has strong competition on that score. But I can't understand why anybody still buys junk like the S85 knowing how bad they are and what they cost to fix. The refurbished crank will last about 200 miles because these engines are absolute shit.
