- Jonny and Jon assess a BMW M6 brought in as a parts project and are not shocked at what they find when they crack open the S85 V10 engine.
The guys also replace the destroyed engine of a Mercedes GL450. - Авто та транспорт
I like this channel because he actually fixes cars. No bad-mouthing this or that.
Just a pleasure to watch a professional.
And he's actually a good mechanic, unlike other channels
@@Rimsy79 You must mean Scotty.
You should give M539 Restoration a try🔥
Every wrench turn makes me more and more happy with my Toyota and Lexus choices.
My family exclusively buy Toyotas or Honda only.
My dad's Honda accord engine died with 430,000 miles. With the current car market, he just just bought a factory refurbished engine and had the transmission rebuilt.
5,500$ for the transmission and engine and 1,300$ for the labor and little stuff that was not worth going back on the engine.
Crazy market when it's cheaper to dump a bunch of money into your already payed for car then it is to buy new.
They are more reliable but they don’t drive as well.
@@joetz1 a broken down exotic doesn’t drive at all. I’m a former Range Rover owner.
@@ozarkliving7263 They are not exotic , just junk , I couldnt think of anything with a Land Rover badge on it I would want to own , other than maybe a mug , and there has to be irony in that .
@@ozarkliving7263 i‘ve been there, having owned a bunch of Japanese and European cars. The Toyotas (Toyota and Lexus) are more reliable but they are far behind in handling, performance, steering, and style compared to the Europeans or even, some of the newer American cars, for that matter. These people with the high maintenance costs aren’t stupid…they have just made the decision that the reliability of a Toyota is not more important than driving enjoyment.
Car ninja “s85 worst engine bmw made” m539 restorations “hold my wrench”

@@timdmx512 “i yell at a mechanic. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?” lol
m539 is just a genius ...and a nice guy...great he gave up his job and went fulltime on youtube
Johnny’s face said it all on the V10. Hope that customer is ready to be right back for another engine.
M5 v10 engine is very reliable engine the problem is people doesn’t understand how the engine works. People treats it like a Toyota Corolla
@@The_North0 I’m sure of that but in this case it would be hard to spent that kinda of money and not so what Johnny recommends.
@@The_North0 Thats the thing with these Germans, they have to be pampered or else catastrophe. Useless!!
@@The_North0 What's it like hailing an engine with a known catastophic defect as the greatest thing since sliced bread? I think I trust a professional mechanic's definition of "reliable" over yours. But if you're either into pain or spending thousands on replacement engines, good luck with that. Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again (drive S85 V10, engine fails, spend thousands on replacement S85 V10, repeat) and expecting a different result. Anybody notice this engine isn't offered on any new or even recent BMW products? Get a clue.
@@houseofno 13 years and counting. Preemptive replacement of bearings for $2500, other than that no issues. Lots of Hyundais and Toyotas out there for you to drive tho, have at er
Holy cow, I can't imagine the bill for paying a mechanic to rebuild an entire car like that.
Oh this is normal in the German car world.
Right? Buying a brand new one would be cheaper.
Normal for German cars. You can make a lot of money doing this if you know what you're doing
Kind of happened with my 944. Broke a bolt off in the block, had to pull it and have it drilled out, was mad at it and let it sit for about 6 months. We had to move to a different state so it all went to a Porsche specialist. Ziplocks all labeled with all the bolts, engine, trans, timing kit, oil cooler upgrade. Several crates of stuff. I was cleaning out my old garage and found a bolt of steering. I pulled it out of my pocket and Tom said, "oh the bolt for the steering." I found the right guy for the job.
Figure $25k plus parts.
Jon and Jonny work really well together. You can tell there's a mountain of mutual respect between the two of them.
When Ninja and Jon are on it some serious shit is about to happen.
I've seen this table in action multiple times but it still amazes me.
Videos could be easily longer, it's a joy watching you wrench ;)
Would love to see follow-up on the M6!
Watching the Car Ninja doing his things on BMW was entertaining but now I discovered M539 Restoration entertainment just kicks up a few levels
Johnny you and your team are German car magicians, we all know it takes alot of knowledge and patience, thank u from nyc
Amazing content guys! Keep it up 👍
Johnny , I like your videos . Your a good mechanic 👍
That Mercedes engine is freaking MASSIVE! Wow.
Masters at work! Man that table is worth it’s weight in gold💪💪
Good tools and knowing how to use em makes things much easier. My 4 post lift is the best tool I have purchased so far. Thanks for another great video.
Fixing up those big Merc V8 just in time for the next gas price rise, oh happy days! Great vid Ninja and crew.
And that S85 BM, just cut out the middle man and send the lot on to EuroAsian Bob, he'll know what to do with it.
Great content, I'm getting smarter every day! Keep it coming!
Good work👍👍
I wholeheartedly agree with Jonny's assessment of the S85 V10 - one of the worst engines BMW ever built. Yet there are still some of you fantasizing about putting this boat anchor into an E30. Those people are either into pain or into spending lots of money. Either way, no wonder BMW doesn't offer this engine anymore. BMW has already found better ways of reaching 500 or more horsepower years ago. Might be a worthwhile hint to look into. Thanks for the great video Jonny
S85 v10 is not one of the worst engine Bmw ever built. It’s really sad how misinformed people are about this engine. Did you know Bmw doesn’t offer v10 because of emission regulations? Bmw was actually looking to put v10 in the next generation M5 but killed the project because of the new euro emission requirements.
Seeing all of these engine replacements on relatively new BMWs and Mercedes has convinced me to keep my 30+ y.o. BMW. These new ones are very expensive POS! There's no way a 2022 BMW is going to be around in 2052. And as a follow up...we should start a pool on how soon that M6 returns for a new engine! I say in 7 months.
I have some faith in the b58. Probably because toyota made them do it properly
BMW and Mercedes used to engineer with pride, but the accountants decided it was way more profitable to make flawed engines that take in tons of money through the service departments.
Incredible, hard to believe people will put that much money into rebuilding something.
That thing was massive. 👍
Looks like Hoovie has competition in building junk cars
Wow, just brilliant :)
Jezzzzzz! That is a huge motor!!!!
I’ve commented on a couple videos of people using ARP hardware when replacing rod bearings.
This goes to show that that isn’t the best option. Because that was the bearing that spun rather than the factory stuff.
Ninja putting in the work. There is nothing cheap when a BMW is involved.
Bring More Wallet........
Interesting... M278 V8's don't usually fail this way. Lack of maintenance is the most likely cause of death but great work getting the GL450 back on the road!
My thoughts exactly. These engines are known to go well over 200-300K before a rebuild.
Hypnotic.....
So calm when all hell is breaking loose...
To be called one of the worst engines BMW has ever produced; that is quite a high bar
It’s not one of the worst engine. It’s one of the best engine Bmw ever produced. It’s sadden me there is a lot of misinformed about this engine.
@@The_North0 right, when a mechanic who specializes in working on BMWs, including rebuilding engines, says it's one of the worst, he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about
@@kevinbarry71 mechanic doesn’t know jack. It’s the question of how people treats their car. Some people who bought Bmw treats it is like a Corolla whose would careless about maintenance nor making sure the engine warm up properly.. I have e60 M5 that has over 160,0000 miles and I have a E60 with n52 engine with 214,000 miles still going strong. M5 is still on the original rod bearing. I have seen fair shares of Bmw at junkyard and I opened the engine valve cover. Believe it or not most of them has engine sludge as if the previous owner doesn’t keep up with maintenance. It’s no wonder why they are at junkyard. With N52 engine water pump are known to failed but it has not for my N52 because I changed the coolant every 30,000 miles. This is a prime example of how you treats your car and the car will treats you right.
@@The_North0 nonsense. Look at the recommended service intervals for your BMW in the manual. It tells you you can go something like 10,000 miles between changes. Blame BMW. Don't blame the users. A car should be able to be used as a car. It's not some device that needs to be pampered and managed by engineers at all times. German cars are just built like shit. And there are people like you out there making all sorts of dumb excuses
@@kevinbarry71 since you can’t be reason with. I am not going to waste my time. Keep driving your Toyota. Have a good day
Looking for a M6 right now!!!!!😎
Hey Jonny where are you from ..i am a retired bmw tech of 38 years , ihave come to respectbyour work ethic and professionalism..please be gentle when critsizing bmw ..
Amazing there is no leak of coolant or oil after engine is running.
You know something is munted when a qualified mechanic says uuuuumm. lol
Fascinating 🤨
We had a couple of bad experiences with customer supplied parts decades ago when I was a mechanic. After that the boss told potential customers to go find another garage if they wanted to supply their own parts.
Car ninja what you think about the diesel gl 350 bluetech ? Is it a good engine ?
These customers must really love their cars to invest in an engine swap.
Was thinking the same thing. Also thought probably cheaper than a new GL450. Either way, WAY out of my price range.
With the crazy car prices these days, a new used engine might be worrth it if the rest of the car is okey and not rusted out.
Real mechanics a dying breed
Jonny, do you have and use Hazet tools? How do they compare to the Mac tools, Snap on, etc? I know they were more expensive.
I am just wondering what made the old GL450 engine go Kaput just like that?
They all fail!! Just a matter of time... Root cause is high turbo temperatures and it burns the exhaut valves on the front cylinders on each bank. Another issue is failing cam lobes. And the cylinder wall scoring comes from failed siltec cylinder wall coating that's used to reduce friction and heat. Later years use a nanoslide branded coating.
The Benz job went well compliments of the subframe table, everyone who watches with horror needs to play with an M275 Bi turbo just once lol
Fiddly weird stuff everywhere, I'll stick to my W116 and W123 toys...
Great viewing though!
Nice got a gl450 last year. Dropping the engine do i need to drop the frame...or can i pull it to the top
Replace crank? Hope cylinder walls and pistons are good.
Hey Johnny, if you upgrade the today bearings will you never have to do them again.
What are your thoughts on this vehicle? Might look into getting one for my family.
For an insane project like this, I think this is a situation where the customer has to provide a retainer to the mechanic. Deposit money in advance
Absolutely agree, I’m surprised Jonny would take the bmw job without something down.
2008 M6 empty hulk with piles and piles of parts, most of which are salvage and or purchased in a dark back alley at prices suggesting chop shop origins.
Jonny? Did you lose a bet? You need to hold the deed to this dudes house. ;-)
Will there be a part 2 update for that M6 ?
What happens to the old engines? Does the client take it home? Or do you guys send it to a scrap yard or something?
When you buy a rebuilt engine, the rebuilder usually wants the old one to rebuild, or you pay a hefty core charge. I think that was a rebuilt one. It would take forever to get a brand new one for a ridiculous amount of money.
What do you do with the motors you remove? Do you work with a salvage firm that takes them off your hands for parts? Doubt they can go out with the trash? Thanks.
They almost always go back to the supplier of the engine that was purchased. They call it a core.
The motor mounts were not changed?
Johnny's my hero. I refer to him for my interests as Dr Bimmer. 😁
Does anyone know about the 2005 , C230 Mercedes-Benze 4 cyl motor? Is it any good?
What’s the best engine bmw have ever produced?
With new bearings can you run a different weight oil now to slow down the rod bearings from going bad?
No. It doesn't matter what you do, the S85 will never be a reliable long term proposition. If you want a decent V10, buy a Murcielago.
@@berwhaletheavenger, how did you from S85 to another car that is not remotely close to being in the same price range. Might as well said...IF YOU WANT A RELIABLE V10 GET A CARERRA GT. Or even better...A LEXUS LFA
@@elmayimbe5094 'Carrera'. The two RR's are in front. The S85 is landfill.
Or just sidestep that unreliable E60 crap and buy an AMG 55 Mercedes. Problem solved. You can thank me later.

Car less than 10 years old and it already needs a new engine - lol, I'll never buy a German "premium brand" car but it's nice to see how you guys can make big money off them.
How many miles did the old engine have?
Do you guys work with warranty companies???
👍❤️👍
Jonny you just need some old leather from a belt to fix that bearing issue.
how many miles on the mercedes?
the 2013 MB engine swap....wow, is that normal for that engine?
What a foolish expenditure…. But good for Johnny…..
What car ?
How many miles on these vehicles needing new motors????

Where is johhny from ? Seems to be from somwhere in Eastern Europe but not sure
Albania
Where are you located
I would asked for progress payments on rebuilding that 2006, in case the guy walked away
Do you have a source for used engines or do you have the customer source an engine so you are non on the hook for warranting the engine. I know the BMW engine was the customers so I'm wondering about the Mercedes engine
It's hard to grasp just how big these v8 and v10s are.
The engines actually are not that big , its all the junk that bolts onto them .
I am surprised Johnny doesn't do a Carwizard and just say "no thanks" to people like the S85 dude. Yeah I know work is work but the owner doesn't come across as someone who will pay a large bill on time and without fuss. I would at least be getting regular payments from the guy. Not telling you how to run your business though 😊 (former mechanic, been there done that).
100 % Agree with you. I personally pick and choose who I do business with.
Has anyone actually seen the "Wizard" do a car repair?
Did you actually meet the "S85 dude"? FORMER MECHANIC
@@garys9694 I sure did, many times. RANDOM UA-cam DUDE.
It’s nice to make money on a job, but gee wiz is it really worth the stress of doing all of this difficult work to put this engine back into this BMW!
What's the labor charge for this?? Shop contact info?
Rule 1.............Oil change,Oil change,Oil change.
Jonny, I know you love your beamers, but why are their engines so ^&%*! You love 'em because you get the best of both worlds. That is, you can easily and relatively cheaply fix your beamers - kudos! And yet you make so much money from clients fixing a brand that is so friggin' unreliable. After all of these years, of proud BMW history hasn't this company learned anything from say, Lexus? It's where luxury and reliability meet. BMW has never made this nexus - to a Lexus.
Lexus is boring, no offense. Bmw is a sport cars company and is worth the trade-off.
That thing looks like it came out of a bus.
I cannot imagine wanting an M6 so bad to even approach something like that. Move on, pick something else, or get one in better condition even if it takes awhile to find one.
Especially paying someone to do it.
The finest German engineering 🤑 🤮
If I was The Car ninja I would refuse the job,, not worth the headache
This guy like any BMW?
Check the rods first
I’ll bet the customer has no intention of keeping this BMW. He is going to get Jonny to get it back running half decent, then he is going to flip it to try and recover most of the money that he has got into it.
Then people say "bmw's and mercedes can go 400k miles!". Yes, when u do shit like this to them. If it was a toyota, it would be dumped because the car would be worth less than the new engine. The car's own value sort of protects it from being totaled in these type of cases. Better question would be: how much money has been spent on the car during 10 years/certain miles.
shqipeeee
I like Johnny and I think he is a true mechanic but still something seems fishy about that engine in the GL, why did that happen?? I think people should focus more on why crazy shit like that happens rather than just seeing the problem.. It must have overheated to cause that....
i got a 2014 gl450 with the same m278 motor. had it since new. 56k miles now. got the ecu tuned (turned up boost pressure and pulled some timing). made 560hp and 650lb/ft on 93. no other mods. $400 for the tune. put 10k miles of hard driving with the tune. no issues. stock hp was around 340. the car is a beast. 0-60 in the low 4 sec range. took off the stock speed limiter and got it up to 164mph (on the digital readout since the analogue tops out at 160) when driving from atlanta to tucson. these things sell for around $20k now and are amazing cars overall when maintained. cant beat the value for money.
so the n20 isn’t the worst designed bmw motor
The only thing good about a BMW is the looks why can’t you take the motor and tranny to the junkyard where it belongs and put a good engine 3.8 v6 from the 90s something like that in it I understand you’ll have to probably switch out the computer as well the alarm system might not match up I understand all that still once the project is complete you would have a good car not something that’s gonna stay at the shop
"Pretty expensive MB V8" = $?????
This is why I drive boring Toyota’s. 220k on a 2008 Prius and 170k on a 2010 Rav4
Yup....Boring!
Oh Ralph 😂
It's a little odd for someone with the knowledge of Johnny to signle out the S85 as "one of the worst BMW engines" when he knows full well that the rod bearing issues are also common on the S54, S65, S62 and S63. The S63 has a lot more than just bearings to think about too, also timing chains, valve stem seals and turbo related issues, I would say it or the N63 would easily take the title of worst engine from BMW. People like to single out the S85 because it's the only V10 BMW made which they think somehow makes it different, when in actual fact the issues it experiences aren't by any means unique to that engine. In terms of sound and the visceral and dramatic driving experience it provides, I would say the S85 is hands down one of the greatest engines BMW has ever produced. Keep in mind, it is the most powerful NA engine BMW ever put in one of their own road cars, the only one with more power is the V12 they made for the McLaren F1.
The Mercedes v8 is massive, know that wasn't cheap. I'll stick with Honda or Toyota
I would charge the customer first before doing this engine job because this sounds like a bad idea.
4:13 NINJA CRINGA
If you’re replacing the engine anyway, why don’t you just LS swap it? 😎
"One of the worst engines BMW ever made". The S85 has strong competition on that score. But I can't understand why anybody still buys junk like the S85 knowing how bad they are and what they cost to fix. The refurbished crank will last about 200 miles because these engines are absolute shit.
Watching all this....i never want a luxury car. They are all geared to empty your wallet.
